TACIT AND EXPLICIT KNOWLEDGE
Explicit knowledge is knowledge that
1. can be articulated, codified, and stored …
2. … in media such as databases, books, manuals, procedures and how-to video or other …procedures and how-to video or other …
3. … can be readily transmitted to others. The information contained in encyclopedias (including Wikipedia)
are good examples of explicit knowledge.
Wikipedia.org
![Page 7: Knowledge Management and Governance Reform](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052522/554c73d2b4c905f76f8b5451/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
TACIT AND EXPLICIT KNOWLEDGE
Tacit (also: informal) knowledge is knowledge that is
1. unwritten, unspoken, and hidden vast storehouse of knowledge held by practically every human being, based on his or
her emotions, experiences, insights, intuition, observations and
internalized information
2. difficult to transfer 2. difficult to transfer to another person by means of writing it
down or verbalising it.
3. integral to the entirety of a person's consciousness, is acquired largely through association with other people, and requires
joint or shared activities to be imparted from on to another.
![Page 8: Knowledge Management and Governance Reform](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052522/554c73d2b4c905f76f8b5451/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
TACIT = ICEBERG
Tacit knowledge is like the
SUBMERGED PART OF AN ICEBERG.
It constitutes THE BULK OF WHAT ONE KNOWS,THE BULK OF WHAT ONE KNOWS
and forms the UNDERLYING FRAMEWORK
that MAKES EXPLICIT KNOWLEDGE POSSIBLE !!!
![Page 9: Knowledge Management and Governance Reform](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052522/554c73d2b4c905f76f8b5451/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Why is knowledge so important
KNOWLEDGE is
1. the key driver for change
2. the key element for innovation and individual as well 2. the key element for innovation and individual as well as organizational learning
3. highly linked to “leadership” i.e. how people run organizations and enable / allow for knowledge
networking
![Page 10: Knowledge Management and Governance Reform](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052522/554c73d2b4c905f76f8b5451/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
