WELCOME HOME FR. MICHEAL You've been a long time away

By now, most parishioners will be aware that we have a new priest in our midst. He is Father Micheal O'Neill, a tall gentleman with a great sense of humour, evident from his happy smiling face. He returned to Ireland after the last General Chapter of the Carmelite Order and was appointed to the Community of St. Colmcille's. We would like to welcome him, and wish him every happiness in our Parish.

Fr. Micheal was born (as he says himself) in the middle of Galway City, the youngest of five brothers. Three of these brothers are now living in Dublin and one in Clonmel. When he was nine years of age his family moved to Dublin. He went to school in Terenure College and loved every minute of it. It was there the desire to become a Carmelite was born. Directly, at the end of his final year, he along with five other young men entered the Carmelite Novitiate in Kinsale. That was a very happy year for them. I asked Fr. Micheal what he remembered most about those days. The twinkle and the smile in his eyes took over. He replied, "Great scope for manual work and phys-ical exercise!"

After his time in the Novitiate, Micheal and his five com-panions were sent to Rome to study. After the normal studies he came back to Dublin and was ordained in Terenure College. There was another year to be spent in Rome before returning to Dublin to join the community in Terenure College. Some four years later he answered an invitation to go to Peru, where he was to spend the next four years of his life before being asked to return to Rome for further study. Peru left a deep impression on him. He worked in a parish high up in the Andes, along with Fr. Chris Conroy. The parish house stood at an altitude of 3,800 metres. The parish itself covered a vast area, something like half the size of Munster, with a population of- 50,000 people. He experienced the Church there as fully involved in the lives of the people, from regular church work, to health care, to the very meagre agricul-

ture that is possible at that alti-tude, to improving the herds of llama, sheep and alpaca. All this was done with a great sense of teamwork. Travelling around the parish on the rough terrain was always difficult but a good jeep provided a reliable means of transport. Fr. Micheal grew to love the people and the breath-taking beauty of the mountains -grey, gaunt mountains, turning black as they soared into the blue of the sky that seldom shows a trace of cloud. He was very happy there until one day a message got through: "We want you to study in Rome". It was goodbye to Peru. "I could have stayed forever," he says.

So it was back again to Rome to study for a time. Four years later Micheal was elected as a member of the General Council of the Carmelite Order. In this role he had, for six years, responsibil-

ity for new developments of the Order in South America, Africa and Asia. This entailed many visits to Carmelite communities in countries of these three continents. In many of these places the Carmelite presence is very much in its infancy but the future is bright. For his second term of six years he was given responsibility for what was happening in North America and Northern Europe. Here he saw the efforts of the Order to adapt to the changing times and to produce new life from the old roots.

In addition to this work, Fr. Micheal throughout his time on the Council was involved in the development of the Order's commitment to Justice and Peace. This is some-thing in which he is still involved and hopes to continue in Knocklyon.

He has enjoyed his first two months in our parish very much and looks forward to knowing the parish much more, to seeing the new Parish Team develop, and to working on the contribution that the eight-century Carmelite tradition and spirituality makes to the life of the parish.

INDIA IMMERSION PROJECT Last year an appeal was made through the Newsletter to assist local Colaiste Eanna students who were travelling to India to work with children as part of the "India Immersion Project". Mark O'Neill from Idrone Close was part of that first group of Fifth Year students who travelled with their teachers for a two week period. In February of this year; another student from Knocklyon, seventeen-year-old Brian O'Connor (Templeroan), visited Calcutta with five students and two teachers. He recounts for us below, his preparations and some of his experiences there.

Each student was given two months to raise over €1 ,300 . At the start I thought this was going to be very difficult to do, but in the end we managed to raise over €50 ,000 . The money was collect-ed from numerous events such as quiz nights, poker classics, golf classics, busking, bag-packing, donations and Church door collec-tions. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone who contributed so gen-erously to any of these events.

Most of the money raised went to the schools in Calcutta in partic-ular to a slum school in Tangara where the conditions were just unbelievable. The school consisted of three small rooms. The children had no seats or desks, they just sat on the ground. The classrooms

Brian with one of his pupils (Mangol).

were, in fact, just empty rooms with a blackboard in each. The school was built in the middle of a dumping area. The smells and the sights were unimaginable. Most children don't get the opportunity to go to school, instead they have to work in the dump sorting and separating all the rubbish to sell off for money for

their families. It was great to see that the

money raised by last year's Colaiste Eanna students had been used to build new toilet facilities for the children. Previously the sanita-tion was very inadequate.

While there we visited and worked in locations set up by Mother Teresa. It was really heart-warming to see so many volunteers from all over the world so eager to help out, in any way they could.

We visited the leprosy colony and Mother Teresa's 'Home for the Dying'. The leprosy colony was so well organised, they grew their own crops, made their own clothes and even had a school to teach the children. It's just one of many establishments set up by Mother Teresa.

We also worked in the 'Home for the Dying' during our stay. It was physically and mentally demanding but I enjoyed every minute of it. While talking to some of the patients there, they told me how much they appreciated all the vol-unteers helping out. Hearing this made me so happy, to know all our work was so appreciated.

Altogether our trip was a great "eye-opener", one which I'll never forget. I feel greatly privileged to have received such an opportunity and hopefully learning about this trip will encourage other people to do their share in helping those less well off.

Children coming to school through the

dump where many of them work. - Brian O'Connor

44 ...CHILDREN ARE GOD'S BEST GIFT... Psalm 127:3 TM

99

If you're a parent, read this. Better yet, keep it where you can read it regularly: (1) my hands are small; don't expect perfec-

tion whenever I make a bed, draw a pic-ture, or throw a ball. My legs are short; slow down so that I can keep up with you

(2) my eyes have not seen the world as yours have; let me explore it safely; don't restrict me unnecessarily

(3) make time for me. Housework will always be there; I'm little only once

(4) I have feelings too; don't nag me about my inquisitiveness. Treat me as you'd like to be treated

(5) I'm a gift; treasure me as God intended. Hold me accountable, give me guidelines to live by, discipline me with love

(6) I need encouragement to grow, not empty praise. Go easy, you can correct the things I do without putting me down

(7) give me the freedom to make decisions, even if they're not always right. Permit me to fall, so that I can learn to walk

(8) don't do things repeatedly for me; that makes me feel like my efforts don't measure up to your expectations. And don't compare me with others; I'm me, not them

(9) don't be afraid to leave for a weekend together. Kids need time away from par-ents, just like parents need it from kids. Besides, it shows us that your marriage is something special

(10) take me to God's house and introduce me to Him, because I'll need Him for the rest of my life.

THOMAS MOORE REMEMBERED IN PEARSE MUSEUM

KNOCKLYON HISTORY SOCIETY recently c o m m e m o r a t e d the 150th anniversary

of the death of the poet (1779-1852).

Those who made their way to the Pearse

Museum in Rathfarnham on a bitterly cold

Saturday af ternoon, soon forgot about the

weather condi t ions outs ide as they sett led

down to listen to Deirdre O'Cal laghan speak

about T h o m a s Moore, and sing his well known

songs to her own harp accompaniment . Her

rendit ions of Love Thee Dearest, The Minstrel

Boy; The Last Rose Of Summer and Silent O

Moyle, a long with her account of the poet 's

many accompl ishments and tragedies, remind-

ed the capt ivated audience of t imes past when

the songs were heard so frequently. The high-

light of the per formance was probably Deirdre's

singing of Oh Breathe Not His Name, Moore 's

tr ibute to his fr iend, Robert Emmet. The tall

p ines of the Lover 's Walk outs ide (where

Robert Emmet courted Sarah Curran) seemed

to sway in rhythm with the singing.

Moore wrote the lyrics to old Irish airs saved

by the music collector Bunt ing who had attend-

ed the Belfast Harp Festival in 1792. These airs

became known and were popular ised as a

result of Moore's recitals. The Coulin is now a

special favourite. Deirdre O'Cal laghan's singing

of it as Though The Last Glimpse Of Erin was

truly memorable .

T h o m a s Moore was born in 12 Aungier Street,

Dublin. Ten vo lumes of his poems, set to the

music of tradit ional Irish airs, were first pub-

l ished between 1807 and 1834.

I I 1 , IMPROVEMENTS AND EXTENSIONS The National Roads Authority has announced that it is to eliminate roundabout junctions on the M50 motorway. In order to improve traffic flows between the motorway and major routes out of the capital, junct ions are being redesigned to ensure non-stop traffic flows. The capacity of the M50 is to be increased to provide three lanes in each direction. The total cost of making the proposed improve-ments will cost over € 3 8 0 million. The NRA, in conjunc-tion with Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown County Council, is con-sidering the possibility of opening the South Eastern motor-way in sections, starting with that from Ballinteer to Leopardstown. This is because of traffic problems caused by work on the Luas line, the new Dundrum Shopping Centre and the extension of the Wyckham by-pass. The proposal would also help to ease traffic difficulties at the Leopardstown and Brewery Road works. Good news for motorists.

SPORTING MODELS!

PROGRESS ON LUAS LINES The Tallaght and Sandyford lines are due to be complet-ed by the end of 2003 and passenger services are to be introduced early in 2004. In general, good progress has been reported on diverting utilities such as gas, water, electricity and telephones f rom the path of the rail tracks. The consortium appointed to lay the track and install the electrical power system has commenced their work. The depot at Red Cow on the Tallaght line has been complet-ed, and work has started on the Sandyford depot. Work on the bridges over the M50 is progressing. Five trams have already been delivered, and consideration is being given to the extension of the Luas line to the Dublin docklands area.

The Railway Procurement Agency has subsumed the role of the former CIE Light Rail Project and the above report is based on information supplied by RPA. (It would appear that in less than 2 years harassed Knocklyon motorists can make their way to Tallaght and let Luas lead them to their destination. - Great news!)

Cyclists, please use cycle tracks where these are provided.

Ciaran Doyle and Elaine Hickey model the new tracksuits from Valvoline, sponsors of the Senior Football, Hurling and Camogie teams at Ballyboden St. Endas - report on Page 11.

S K A T E B O A R D I N G D A N G E R S There have been a number of complaints recently from car drivers and pedestrians about near-accidents with skate-boarders in the vicinity of the lona Centre and Church grounds. In the interest of safety, we would like to draw attention to the following notice now displayed in the lona Centre windows. We would ask parents to explain to their children that skateboarding is prohibited in the area because of the very real danger of accident to themselves and to other Centre/Church users.

MUSIC - SINGING - DRAMA Our school choir and grupa tradisiunta excelled them-selves in this year's Corfheile at the National Basketball arena. They are now busily preparing for the forth-coming Confirmation ceremonies. Our Coirm and Grupa Trad performed superbly in Mullingar at the Coirm Festival with their production of Donal Dubh. Two 'Gradams' (Awards) were picked up for Best Production and Best Set Design. In March, all of these groups put on two shows in Sancta Maria College. Ar mbuiochas to Sr. Basil (Priomhoide Sancta Maria) for giving us permission to use their school hall.

TRIP TO HOLYWOOD, CO. DOWN Over the last number of years, the school has taken part in a twinning project with Holywood Primary School, just outside Belfast. On 19th March, fifty pupils from Fifth Class visited their Northern friends and attended a school show based on the Titanic. The pupils and teachers were warmly welcomed and had a lovely visit. In May a group of children from Holywood will come to Knocklyon and stay overnight, and in June a reciprocal trip will be made by our pupils.

CONFIRMATION Confirmation takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday, the 23rd and 24th April. A number of events have taken place in preparation for the Sacrament. Eva Coffey's Drama Group of Craig Carey, Aoife Doyle, Sarah Denver, Emma Hogan, Hazel Gormley Leahy, Tom Foster, Alison Redmond and Sinead McDermott staged a powerful drama for our Sixth Classes on the dangers of substance abuse. The Connect Group organised this presentation and Mr. Gerry Cooney from the Rutland Centre spoke to the pupils about addictions. The Pioneer Association have also visited the Sixth Classes and were delighted at the numbers who have joined the Association. Before Easter the beautiful Ceremony of Light was held in the Church and on 16th April all the Sixth Classes will go for a orte-day Retreat to Gort Muire.

VISIT OF POLITICIANS As part of our Social Education Programme, Mr. Alan Shatter and Mr. Seamus Brennan were invited to speak to our Senior Classes. The proceedings were chaired by Janine Ryan and Ferdia Cahill from Sixth Class. Each T.D. was asked by the Chairperson to speak for five minutes on the role of a T.D. and then the pupils asked the T.D. a series of hard-hitting ques-tions.

TRAFFIC Just a reminder to take extra care when driving in or around the school. Please don't block footpaths or other entrances. The final term is an ideal opportunity to walk to school.

Take extra care, walk if you can!

Baile Buadain Naomh Eanna BALLYBODEN ST. ENDAS

It has been a hectic start to the first quarter of the new year in Ballyboden St. Endas.

An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern T.D. performed the official opening in January of the reinstated clubhouse before a capacity attendance. He warmly praised the club for its energy and efficiency in getting the clubhouse back into use in such a short time. A specially commissioned plaque, by Pat Lambert , made from a 150-year-old piece of elm was unveiled by Mr. Ahern. This is now on display

in the foyer of the clubhouse. Valvoline - the world 's leading brand of motor oil have

decided to sponsor the club's senior football, hurling and camogie teams. The club hopes to be selling a full range of branded leisurewear in the new sports shop in the next month.

ENCORE! - A M u s i c a l T r e a t I n S t o r e

That time of year has arrived again! Dresses are dragged from attics and the dust is brushed off those bowler hats -as the ENCORE! students take to the stage.

ENCORE! is now ending its fourth year in Knocklyon. ENCORE! was set up to give young people an opportunity to explore their talents in music, drama and dance in a non-competitive positive environment. All students take part in all three theatrical disciplines throughout the semes-ter and perform in all three areas of the concert. While the aim is for the highest standards, enjoyment and participa-tion are just as important as the finished product.

The ENCORE! end of year concert will take place on 20th April in The Civic Theatre, Tallaght. Due to the growth of ENCORE! there are three concerts taking place during the day and the seniors tread the boards in the evening at 8 p.m. featuring scenes from Godspell, dance numbers from Chorusline and musical numbers from Sister Act and some S-Club 7 songs! . . . and more!

The junior concerts feature scenes and songs from Annie - an all-time favourite, an adaptation of Noah's Ark includ-ing a rendition of Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head and the very young are treating us to a story of Hansel And Gretel involving many witches and cats! These concerts are jam-packed with wonderful dances from tap to mod-ern.

The pupils and parents are eagerly awaiting the end of year show and the tutors of the ENCORE! team wish everyone the very best.

Anyone wishing to see the shows can obtain a ticket directly from The Civic Theatre (Telephone: 462 7477).

A Hospice for Children We recently learned of a group whose v is ion is to establ ish a Chi ldren's Hospice in Ireland. Launched in January by Ir ish-born Sean Bradley, his sister Angela Kennedy f rom Blessington, and Knocklyon resident Grainne Tyndall the group entitled 'Celtic Angels 4 U' was brought to public attention at the 'Mind, Body & Spirit Show' in the R.D.S. in March

The group's aim is to establish a six-bedded hospice for terminal ly ill chil-dren, while giving respite to their fami-lies, and they are hoping that a suitable property on the outskirts of Dublin wi l l be donated to them for this purpose. The group have applied for registered charity status for this project and are await ing complet ion of this process.

ST. COLMCILLE'S PARENTS' ASSOCIATION

Our fund-raising Pub Quiz in Faugh's G.A.A. Club on March 8th was the most successful one to date. There was a high turnout with twenty-three tables filled. Spot prizes of a mobile phone, international football match tickets, wine, etc., went down a treat with the contestants - not to mention the winning prize of € 1 0 0 ! Our Quizmaster, Dublin G.A.A. star Brian Stynes did a fine job on the night. Thanks to all who partici-pated in this event.

There was a great reaction by parents to the Junior School Sponsored Walk to raise funds for the School 's Information and Technology Depar tment . Although the Parents ' Association did not run this event, we were delighted with its success as we are all working for the same cause!

Because of the multi-cultural diversity now in our society, we would like to reflect this by start-ing a course of cookery demonstrat ions run by people of different cultural backgrounds in our locality. Any volunteers - please contact the Parents ' Association.

Finally, Confirmations will take place for Sixth Class pupils on April 23 -24 , and we wish to take the opportunity to wish the children and their families well on their special day.

Junior School News • Junior School News • Jun'n SPONSORED WALK The second term culminated with our Sponsored Walk, which was enjoyed by all 720 pupils, their teachers and many parents . Breda Murphy, Chairperson of the Parents' Association organised stewarding for the walk. The generosity of the local community who sponsored the pupils will enable us to provide computers in all classrooms. The € 1 7 , 0 0 0 raised in the initiative together with a substantial grant from the Department of Education will cover the cost of 30 new computers and printers. Some parents have also donated new computers to the school. Everyone in the school community is overwhelmed by the success of the walk and we express sincere appre-ciation to everyone who supported us. The Parents' Association distributed Easter Eggs to all pupils after the walk. Ian Bentham's lucky sponsorship card won him the huge Caffrey's Easter Egg in the raffle for walkers.

CURRICULUM TREATS The emphasis on Arts Education continued last month. Ms. Mulkerrin organised Musical Awareness Workshops which were conducted for all classes by Grafitti Classics. There will be more Arts activity next month. Second classes will see a children's play T h e Bus' at the Civic Theatre. Seachtain Na Gaeilge was celebrated with ceol, rince agus spraoi. First classes held a Ceili on the Friday of St. Patrick's weekend.

ENROLMENT All places in our six Junior Infant classes for September have been filled. There may be a small number of vacancies in other classes. Prospective applicants must complete an enrolment application form, which is available in the school office. Parents / Guardians who hope to enrol their child in the September 2 0 0 3 Junior Infant classes should be aware that nearly half of the places have been filled already by children who were too young for this September. The closing date for applications will be December 31st 2002 . However, date of application can be important, so the earlier you apply the better. The demand for places in our school usually means that children whose birthday falls between May and

August cannot begin school until the September after their fifth birthday. In such cases many parents prefer not to enrol their child in a pre-school too early.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION This year our six second classes will receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist at six separate Masses, 9 .30 a.m. and 10 .45 a.m. on Sundays May 12th, 19th and 26th.

SCHOOL BUILDING PROJECT We have no progress to report on our application to the Department of Education and Science for extra permanent classrooms to replace our prefabs. The Knocklyon Community Council has prioritised this issue with our local Public Representatives. We would be most grateful if every household in the communi-ty raised the issue of substandard school accommo-dation with canvassers before the General Election. Our core argument is that 5 5 0 children and 2 1 teach-ers should not have to endure 2 0 year old prefabri-cated classrooms any longer. The Board of Management has applied for planning permission for a new car park and better approach route to the school. This work may be completed during the Summer provided the Department of Education allo-cates the funding. This project is a priority in order to provide safer access to the school.

RANGANNA OICHE The eight week Irish language course taught by Mr. Tierney proved very popular with parents. The Parents' Association intends to organise more classes next Autumn.

SPORTS The Indoor Football League organised by Mr. Sweeney and Mr. Tierney shortened the winter for boys and girls in second class. Hurling, Camogie and Gaelic Football will take centre stage on the Green in last term. A lot of pupils had the opportunity to attend Dublin's National League matches during the Spring thanks to the invitation of Cumann na mBunscol.

community council

The AGM of the Knocklyon Community Council took place on Tuesday the 26th March in the Community Centre. The meeting was very well attended and all the political parties were represented. Present were Mr. Seamus Brennan, Government Chief Whip, Mr. Alan Shatter and Ms Olivia Mitchell, Fine Gael. Councillors Cait Keane (PD), Stanley Laing (FG) and John Lahart (FF) were also present. Maria Corrigan, a new Fianna Fail candidate in the forthcoming General Election was also in attendance.

Apologies were received from Ministers of State Liz O'Donnell, Tom Kitt, Senator Ann Ormonde and Councillor Maire Ardagh.

Pictured are Gwen Brennan and Liam Quigley, presenters of 'Day Break With Lite FM', Tom Murphy, Murphy & Gunn, Milltown, and Therese Duggan, winner.

Dublin Radio station Lite FM h^s given away a fantastic BMW 318i worth €44,000 to a delighted listener. Therese Duggan from Knocklyon was stunned when she received a phone call from the Lite FM Day Break team and was told that she had won the vehicle. The BMW was given away as part of a Lite FM station image promotion which will continue to give listen-ers the opportunity to win big value prizes until early summer. The Lite FM BMW promotion ran in conjunction with Murphy & Gunn in Milltown.

The KCC had put together a brief presentation outlining some major concerns they have under the headings:

• Planning • Environment • Education • Policing Various issues were raised under these headings and the

KCC have asked all the politicians to respond with solutions to the concerns outlined, by the 30th April, 2002. The KCC will publish the replies we receive from the various politi-cians. One of the major issues raised was the redevelopment of St. Colmcille's National School. The KCC were asking for cross party support for this project. Mr. Seamus Brennan informed the meeting that the Minister is breaking the pro-ject up into five stages and the first site meeting was sched-uled to take place on the 8th April 2002. As yet no finances have been agreed, but the 'vibes' appear to be positive, and all the politicians present seem to be supporting the project.

Another topic highlighted was the problem of the Travellers. The meeting was attended by the Dodder Valley Association whose aims are to keep this problem in front of the politicians. Ms Olivia Mitchell addressed this issue and Mr. Seamus Brennan informed us that New Legislation was being introduced the following day to deal with this prob-lem. This was generally welcomed, but putting the legisla-tion into practice could be a lot more difficult. Cllr. John Lahart outlined in depth the problem for the people of Rathfarnham.

A further issue of major importance to the meeting was the re-alignment of the Knocklyon Road. This problem has been on the agenda for the last 25 years. The meeting was informed that plans for the road will be drawn up this year, but the finance is not in place. Some of the land for this pro-ject has yet to be purchased and this appears to be one of the factors in the delay. The Public representatives were left in no doubt as to how the people of Knocklyon feel about this issue. It is imperative to keep the 'pressure' on especially in the coming few months.

The level of anti-social behaviour and the lack of Gardai patrols in the area were also raised. The recent vandalism at the Old Ascon site and the breaking of 10 new trees on the Firhouse Road the previous weekend were highlighted as examples of what is going on in our area.

The Chairperson, David Hickey, expressed the gratitude of the KCC to all our local representatives for all the help we received from them over the last year, and for attending the AGM.

Other issues raised will be covered in the next issue of the Knocklyon News, together with the responses received from our politicians.

- David Hickey, Chairperson; Kevin Geoghegan, Secretary
