A Message from our Worthy Grand Knight

Dear Brother Knights, We had some successful events take place this past month. Our Blood Drive on July 21st was a huge success. Our goal was to hit the magic number 100. Unfortunately, we missed it by 2 with a total of 98 donations. I would like to thank Tom Rosol for another successful event and thank everyone that came out to prepare the breakfast and keep the coordination of donors flowing smoothly. Let’s hit 100 the next go around! As soon as we get word on the delivery of the new Sonogram to the Bulverde/Spring Branch Pregnancy Care Center, we will be making a presentation of the KOC Council 8521 donation along with a check for matching funds from Supreme. Everyone will be sent invites for attending. We plan on making this a memorable event and will attempt to get the Archdiocese involved along the Right to Life Chairman for the KOC State Council to join as attendees and presenters. I appreciate the inquiries and questions received at the last meeting regarding the 2019-2020 budget. As stated then, we will be sending out a spreadsheet showing how the money has been spent over the past several years, showing we have been and will continue to operate within our set financial goals. We are now entering a new Fraternal year, keeping in mind our Principles of Charity, Unity and Fraternity, I challenge all new Knights to get involved with our scheduled fundraisers and make a difference. Let us mentor those we recently brought in and get them involved in our charitable events. We will all be the better for it. We, as One, are what makes Council 8521 successful. Austin), and counts as 3 of the 5 activities.

Meet Tina

Born and raised in New Braunfels, Tina Martinez faces every day as a new

opportunity and challenge to better herself for her family. “I’m 61 years old. I’m a

mother of two, my daughter (Candy) and my son (Frank). I have seven

grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren that I love and adore with all my heart.

And that’s what I’m here for – my family, my beautiful family,” said Tina.

Living on her own, Tina faces obstacles with the condition of her current home.

“The home where I live now is not in good condition, but I live there,” Tina said.

“There’s no other way. I survive.” Some of the unsafe conditions of her current

home include a floor that is falling through, electrical issues and lack of insulation

or heating and cooling.

“My floors are going down, I just put boards and nail them all around. When the

winter comes it gets cold. It’s very cold. I keep myself warm with the stove,” said

Tina. “The heaters I can’t trust with the electricity… it happened already two

times it caught fire… so I stopped putting heaters. I just used my gas stove.

As a stud sponsor the Knights will be invited to a special preview party where

we will see where our stud ended up in the framework of the home. We can also

meet Tina, her family and the lives impacted with our $200 donation.

Construction is estimated to begin on Tina’s home in Autumn of 2019. We are currently raising funds to begin Tina's home build. Help Tina build her home by joining Stud-A-Thon! Sponsor or host a stud or help us spread the message about Stud-A-Thon and Tina's story.

Thank You, SK Steve Hanshaw for organizing this worthy cause. This stud was signed at the Council 8521 Jul 10 meeting. Be sure to add your name to this stud. Once construction begins this stud will be installed into Tina’s new home. More to follow:

July Activities

As our worthy Grand Knight mentioned earlier great job again to

Brother Tom Rosol coordinating the blood drive. Thank You to all the

brother’s who volunteered cooking pancakes and to those serving

pancakes. To the brothers who helped with keeping the buses full and

to all the blood donors. We’re still working to reach the magic

number of 100 units. We had a total of 98 units an increase by 1 unit

from the last blood drive. Just think only 2 more donors to go!

FAITHFUL COMPTROLLER REPORT FOR

August 1, 2019

There are currently 92 members including 2 Honorary and 5 Honorary Life members. Two Sir Knights who were suspended

for non-payment of dues have made payment and are reinstated.

All dues for 2019 are now paid.

SK Mike Fadden & Family are offering special prayers for vocations during the month of July.

Sir Knights, Last Sunday was the quarterly collections at church for the Dollar Club which was started by our Assembly to support Seminarians. To date these collections have raised over $30,000. We were blessed on Sunday to have Jorge Verduzco a seminarian from Assumption Seminary attend the July 28th 10 a.m. Mass. Jorge is also a Sir Knight with the Assembly at the Seminary. FINANCIAL SECRETARY REPORT FOR

235 Members which includes 85 Insurance, 14 Honorary, and 28 Honorary Life

The dues invoices for 2019 were mailed to each Knight in December 2018. Payments were due by December 31, 2018. Email reminders were sent on January 23rd to 66 Knights. 2nd Notices were mailed to 53 Knights on February 15th. Email reminders were sent on March 21st to 37 Knights. In April the Retention Committee contacted the Knights who have not paid their dues. Knight Alert Letters were sent on May 8th to 20 Knights who have not paid their 2019 dues. Email reminders were sent on June 27th to 17 Knights. Intent to Retain Letters were sent on July 1st to 17 Knights. There are 12 Knights who have not paid their dues for 2019 for a total of $351.00. Please make checks payable to Knights of Columbus Council 8521 and mail to Joe Vocks, Financial Secretary, 923 River Way Spring Branch, TX 78070.

Larry A. Engbrock, age 74 of San Antonio passed away

Saturday, July 6, 2019. He was born July 27, 1944 to

ManLee and Bertha Engbrock. Larry graduated from

Harlandale High School, then began his career in the

railroad with Union Pacific Railroad where he retired after

41 years of service. Larry was very active in the

community, as a little league football coach, member of

The Knights of Columbus, and a devoted member of St.

Joseph of Honey Creek Catholic Church.
