year. In addition to providing quality meals at a reasonable price, and an opportunity for fellowship for the parish (and beyond), the money earned here supports much of the charitable work that the order does dur-ing the rest of the year. For those of you who are new, or who have not had the time or opportunity to par-ticipate in this activity in the past, I encourage you to find your place and pitch in. Tom Simon, one of the CO-BIG FISH with Dennis Caniglia will be talking about the fish frys and passing around sign-up sheets at our meeting on Tuesday the 7th. (If you cannot be there, contact Tom directly at [email protected]. There will be some new wrinkles this year , as we will be moving down to the Activities Building and cook-ing in the newly-renovated and expanded kitchen. This gives us more room to serve more people, but will involve some new logistics. There will be a “practice” fish fry on Friday February 17th. Knights and friends are invited to help us work the kinks out of the system and enjoy a tasty meal for the bargain price of $5.00. We would like a good turnout for this so we can see what areas need fine tuning. (Brother Ed Ko-nopka told me that the equipment was being installed this week (first week in Feb), so we should be ready). There is no excuse for any of you to be eating at home on Monday Feb 13. The Men’s Club will be having its February meeting featuring talks from noted sports figures Randy Owens, Dallas Cowboy; Marty Perez, Atlanta Braves; Dan Roundfield, Atlanta Hawks. Sons and daughters are welcome (although Brother Tom Simon a/k/a BIG FISH and Men’s Club President [email protected] , has informed me that the once-a-year dispensation for wives has already been used up). For select others of you who got your Feb. 13 reservations in early, it will be Carbonara Trattoria in the Dunwoody Village where Dean Trantow has arranged for a Knight’s Night Out. Gourmet dinner for two at $65 a couple promises to be a great pre-St.Valentine’s day treat. (There may still be time – contact Dean Trantow ([email protected] or 678-296-6326) – but hurry!) We are also approaching the Spring recruiting season. This is the time to finally get around to asking your practicing Catholic male friends who are not yet Knights to come and join us. We will be having some in-formational and promotional events during the fish frys and in the coming weeks and months, but there is no substitute for the personal invitation from a friend or colleague. If you have any questions on what to say, Frank Callan will be happy to help you. If Fish Frys are here, can Vidalia Onions be far behind? Vivat Jesus Stan Wasowski, GK

New 1st Degree Council Brothers

3 Ned Winsor Louis Bernard

On January 24th, these seven candidates joined the All Saints Council as 1st degree knights. Louis Bernard returned to the council after being away for over seven years. He will also count as a new member. He was an original charter member of All Saints in 1994. We welcome proudly this new large class. To gain our sixth consecutive Double Star Award, we will need six new brothers every month now through June. Please recruit.

Rich Kernan Lee Cullom Alexander Morgan

No picture Available (we now have two members with this

same name)

Richard Kernan (no, not Kiernan) was voted in as a transfer member from St. Brigid Council 13204. He was also present as an observer. Lee Cullom is a 2nd degree member who also transferred from St. Brigid Council. Sir Knight Alexander Morgan is a fourth degree transfer into the council from the Cincinnati area and is most welcome. We have had an unusual number of transfers of late.

Pro-Life Demonstration Participation

All Saints knights were prominent in the two Pro-Life Masses held on Sunday, January 22nd, which was the 39th anniversary of the Roe v Wade decision legalizing abortion in America. Both Masses featured honor guards of 13 knights each from the Fr. Charles J. Watters Assembly. Our brother John Gannon, second from left above, and wife Arlene are the Pro-Life ministers of All Saints and marched with other parishioners. Sir Knight Monsignor Marren gave a blistering anti-abortion sermon at both Masses.

Gannon Wins Shining Armor Award

Field agent Sir Knight John Knight (left) and Past Grand Knight Lou Hlad (right) award Brother John Ga nnon (center) our latest Shining Armor Award plaque and pin at the January meeting for fulfilling the five criteria during his first year of membership. A new member must attend three council meetings, partake in three council activities, attain the 3rd degree in his first year, have a private meeting with our insurance field agent, and recruit one new member. John recruited Father David Daly to our ranks.

Buchholz Awarded Knight-of-Month

John Buchholz is awarded his third career Knight-of-the-Month Award for his management of the Desserts with Santa Party in early December. He continues to make this event a growing parish happening every year. He also once received a Knight-of-the-Year Award. His wall should be getting pretty crowded now. He also got a $50 gift certificate to take wife Karleen out to dinner.

Annual Knight Free Throw Tournament

Sir Knight Mike Haslach and son Max (right) sign up to participate in the knight’s annual Free Throw Tournament at the All Saints gym. Manning the desk are Jackie Marshall, fiancée of Sir Knight Tim Krulia, Alexandra Birkbeck, daughter of Sir Knight Doug Birkbeck, and Tim Krulia.

The Council concluded another successful annual Free Throw Tournament. Sir Knight Bryan Kler ran the event as the council Youth Chairperson. He was aided in recording and ball snagging by Steve Kapusta, Dave Bernard, Doc Malone Tom Burleigh, Bill Luckert, and others who spent some time there. Jon Bird took photos and Frank Callan combed the stand for more recruits. We will announce the winners of the various brackets in our next newsletter.

All Saints Cub Scout Pack 434 needed some funds for their activities and KofC Council 11402 came through again. The Knights co-sponsored a spaghetti dinner with them on the evening of January 28th and the parish showed up in force. We served 440 meals and took in a total of $3,806. With meal costs of $1,612, that left the amount of $2,194 for the scouts. Bruce Malinoff and Gene Gannon ran the show for the council. Besides these two brothers and the kitchen staff pictured above, we thank Tom Wozniak, Bob Mitchell, John Barranco, Sue Barranco, Wiley Maloof, Don Myers, BJ Van Gundy, Dean and Mary Trantow, Bill Luckert, Frank Callan, and Joe Mitchell. It was a great team effort. Note Monsignor Kiernan in the crowd.

FEBRUARY: Have you insured your most valuable asset? Is your income protected if you become too sick or hurt to work? Your ability to work and earn an

income is your most valuable asset. Yet a disability could prevent you from earning that income. Just one year of a disability could eliminate your savings.

I would like to show you that Income Armor, an individual disability income insurance product from the Knights of Columbus, should be a key part of your overall financial plan and family’s protection.

If you become too sick or hurt to work, Income Armor provides monthly benefits to help you meet living expenses and maintain your standard of living. Your monthly benefits help you pay your mortgage and other monthly bills, and help your savings and retirement assets remain intact.

In short, if you have a job and don’t have a way to protect that paycheck, you should seriously con-sider Income Armor today. I look forward to meeting with you. John Knight, Field Agent Cell: (404) 569-5265 Email: [email protected]

Our council insurance field agent, John Knight, has put together some great tips to consider monthly on the importance of proper insurance coverage. Following is his February insurance topic to ponder. KofC in-surance is sold only to brothers and their families at great rates. Please consider having a personal conversation with John soon.

Monsignor Kiernan Continues Steady Recovery Monsignor Kiernan, 87, continues to gather his strength at his assisted living suite at St. George Village at 11350 Woodstock Road in Roswell, Georgia 30075. Their web site is www.stgeorgevillage.com. He has already progressed to the point where his friends can take him out to eat and he is walking nicely in his walker, His left arm and fingers are nearing normal function as well. He was especially thankful to the knights for arranging the schedule of parishioner and knight visitors during his convalesance and for spending so much time with him. He still wants visitors. St. George is now his residence, not a hospital, and there are no strict visiting hours.

Young Kiernan Christ and Marty Hlad pose with Monsignor at a recent dinner outing. The youngster, granddaughter of Joan McIvor, is obviously named after him (and Christ too).

Council Monogrammed Shirts Available

9

Now that the holidays are over, we turn our attention toward the upcoming Lenten Fish Fry Event. What better way to show your support of the council than by purchasing an All Saints Logo Shirt and parading it about at the Fish Fry. We currently have them available in red, navy blue, black, and white for $25 each. The sizes are large and X-large. The shirts run big, so if you are a borderline large/extra large person, the large will do fine. Both Lou Hlad and Bryan Kler wear large and they are not small people. If you are interested in purchasing a logo shirt, contact Bryan Kler at [email protected] or 404-944-6629 and indicate your name, quantity, color, and size. Bryan may have some monogrammed baseball hats still available as well for $15. Wear your council ID apparel proudly this year and give our council and our Order as much publicity as possible.

Recruit a New Member Now All Saints would love to achieve an unprece-dented sixth consecutive Double Star Council Award, but we need your help. Please ask a practicing Catholic friend to join the Knights. Any leads you can pro-vide should go to Frank Callan at email address [email protected]. He will interview the candidate and you will receive credit for the lead and this commemorative award if you follow link instructions.

Knight Meetings are Becoming “Sell Outs”

10

Maybe Council 11402 has to start selling tickets and reserving seats at our monthly meetings pretty soon! Our meetings are getting more and more popular and meaningful. Business is brisk and the gatherings are lively. Our contributions to charities and our planned events are increasing. The All Saints Council is growing (now 357) and we will need to purchase more chairs soon. This is a good thing. We always have room for more members. Of special note was the presence of three member priests at our January meeting shown above. Our Chaplain Monsignor Marren was present, along with Father Bill Hao and Father David Daly of the Legionaires of Christ.

The same thing is happening at the 4th degree Fr. Charles J. Watters Assembly meetings. A record 52 Sir Knights were on hand at our January Meeting at Mary Our Queen Parish’s Kiernan Hall (yes, they have a Kiernan Hall also).. Shown is a portion of the crowd that enjoyed a nice dinner before our business meeting. The Assembly now boasts about 217 members of 4th degree Knights from the four member councils --- All Saints, St. Andrew, St. Brigid, and Mary Our Queen All Saints has about half of the Assembly members with about 107. The next 4th degree exemplification ceremony is to be held on June 16th at an Atlanta location to be named. All brothers should plan to become a 3rd degree knight before that date, so that they can move into the 4th degree Watters Assembly in June and partake in that wonderful body as well.

Council Benevolence/Charity/Service Council continued its 3rd year of Fathers for Good seminars and announced the seminars for year four. (see page 14) Council teamed with parish Mens Club to begin ticket sale for six charities featuring a luxury 2012 Buick LaCrosse as first prize. The Parish Council election featured wins by four knights and two wives of knights (Delina Malinoff and Mary Trantow) for the eight open seats. Wife Therese Birkbeck is the President of the parish council and Sir Knight Bryan Kler is the Secretary. Council co-sponsored a spaghetti dinner for benefit of the parish cub scouts which netted $2,194 profit for the scouts (page 7). Our ongoing funeral acolyte parish service was highlighted in the Knight’s Columbia Magazine (see above). Council continued Pro-Life efforts with a Mass on the Roe v Wade anniversary featuring an honor guard and abortion crosses made by Stan Wasowski. Brother John Gannon heads the parish Pro-Life ministry with his wife Arlene. Our brothers assisted in ushering and traffic control for the three day parish mission.

All Saints 11402 is certainly no stranger to the Columbia Magazine Knights in Action section at the rear of that publication. We have been featured in this national magazine a number of times for our Dunwoody Soap Box Derby events, our Double Star Awards, and our International Awards. We have also been featured in the online version of this section on web site KofC.org.

The January 2012 issue of Columbia (page 26) again mentioned our council in a short reference to our Acolyte Program. Norb Braza, our Director, had sent in some information in the hopes of such a reference. As far as we know, no other council in the world has such a program. Requested for assistance in 1998 by Msgr. Kiernan, we have continued the program to this day. We invite new members to join one of our acolyte teams to share in the honor of

serving Mass on God’s altar. Even if you have a fulltime job, you can serve on weekends and for special evening events. And you get a free KofC silk tie. Contact Norb Braza at 770-393-8645 or [email protected].

“Fathers for Good” is An Initiative for Men by Knig hts of Columbus, International.

Edward P. Koss, 90, passed away December 20th after a long illness. He was a third degree member of our council and had been married to Winifred for 68 years. Edward served for three years in the US Navy during World War II. Originally from Hartford CT, he and Winifred later relo-cated to Atlanta in 1991 after a long career in the medical supply business. He was cremated and his remains will be interred at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton GA. Our acolytes were honored to celebrate his memorial Mass on Jan. 7th at All Saints. We ask your prayers for this wonderful member of the Greatest Generation and his

family. Memento Mori
