Dr. Naguib began to work in this field in 2003 at the New York University Study Center for ADHD and other disorders. In 2005 she came to the University of Michigan and continued her work at the U of M Autism and Communica- tions Disorders Clinic, where she also led a long-term treatment and support group that had met for 10 years. When the center was going to discontinue the group, Suzi said “I’ll keep it go- ing”, although she had no idea how she would do it. Creativity and perseverance led to the founding of the Sunfield Center in 2011, and the nonprofit organization LightUp in 2015. The mission of these organizations is to provide programs and services that overcome physical, mental and emotional barriers to participation in activities that are part of quality of life. She showed a moving video of children with au- tism or physical disabilities “dancing” with members of the New York City Ballet. Suzi also described Adapted Bike Camp, which is a one-week camp to teach children with mental and physical disabilities how to ride a two- wheel bike. Adapted bikes, with a wide cylinder replacing the back wheel, are gradually modified as kids learn to pedal and steer and balance. By the end of the week, 80% of the kids have mastered a two-wheeler and can participate in the fun and freedom of being able to ride. Dr. Naguib shared her vision of a place where people with special needs can come for adapted physical activities and life enriching social programs. She closed with an encouraging quote from a friend: “If you build it they will come”. Given Dr. Naguib’s energy and dedication, no doubt her friend is correct! Today’s Program… Observing Autism Awareness Month John Kidle introduced our speaker Dr. Suzi Naguib, licensed psychologist and founding direc-tor of Sunfield Center for Autism and Behavioral Health. Dr. Naguib began to work in this field in 2003 at the New York University Study Center for ADHD and other disorders. Guests at Our Club…

Sally Lamkin introduced Honorary Member Larry Dittmar. Welcome Larry! We hope you will come often and join in whenever you can.

Announcements… Dan Dever reported that a crew of hardy Kiwanians and volunteers began building a trail

at KCW as part of KEEP. He invited others to join them this Saturday at 1:30, weather per-mitting. Contact Dan for details, tools to bring, etc.

Kathie Wilder announced that a set of keys had been turned in to her… hopefully, the owner already has claimed them and is not looking everywhere for them still today!

Lt. Governor Julanne Williams announced the Spring Divisional will be held on April 9, beginning at 10:30am. There will be service project, making blankets for children at Hur-ley Hospital in Flint. The Kiwanis District is also collecting shoes to raise funds for The Eliminate Project. Drop off shoes at KCW before April 9. Julanne named several awards that our club will be receiving at the luncheon.

Julanne also announced that the Kiwanis Young Professionals Club Satellite held their kick off meeting at Connor O’Neal’s last Wednesday, and two attendees have submitted their membership applications! A great time was had getting acquainted, learning about Kiwanis, and forming a team for Trivia Night. Thanks to Luke Panning, Rob Costello, Jerry McMahon and Julanne, who have worked so hard to launch KYP. We will be hear-ing more about this active energetic group!

The Kiwanis Foundation of Michigan is holding a 50/50 raffle: first prize is seven nights in Maui, Hawaii, including airfare and $350 gift card; second prize is dinner for two any-where in Michigan ($250 gift card). Raffle is limited to 5,000 tickets, $10 each. Larry French and Julanne have tickets and welcome members to take tickets to sell to others. This is an exciting way to support the Kiwanis Foundation of Michigan, which provides major funding for programs at three children’s hospitals in Michigan.

No sale activities this weekend at Kiwanis Center Downtown (but donations will be open 9-12).

KCW will be open regular hours Friday and Satur-

day

Fines: Either Fred Sanchez or Dale Leslie proposed a loser’s fine on anyone who support-ed Michigan or Michigan State basketball teams; then Pres. Elect Alan expanded the fine by association with either school and geographical proximity to either school, so that we all paid. If the editor got this wrong, she will stand corrected next week. Fines totaled $21.31 and President Elect Alan Burg thanked the anonymous donor of the extra penny, pointing out that each penny adds up!

Happy Dollars: No time for Happy Dollars today. Bring them in next Monday.

Stuff You Should Know… Hospitality News: Joan Masters had a piece of happy news: Mary Ann Crawford, widow of Past President Merle Crawford, is celebrating her 90th birthday. If you would like to send her greetings, her address is 2151 S. Seventh St., AA, 48103; phone 734-665-4006.

Social Events: Chris Winkler announced the fundraising Spaghetti Dinner on April 8, 5-7pm, cohost-

ed with Circle K. Cost: $10. Make reservations now.

2016 Tiger Trip—Fred Sanchez announced the annual trip to the ballpark. Tigers will be playing NY Mets August 6. Cost $70. Time to sign up with Fred. Make checks paya-ble to Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor (not the foundation).

Kiwanis Social Night at the Palace—Pistons vs. Thunder, March 29. Call Interclub Chair Dave Drake if interested. $55 cost includes food and beverage. Deadline 3/15.

Interclubs: Dave Drake reminded everyone of the Super Interclub March 30, hosted by Manchester Kiwanis at the church at the corner of Pleasant Lake Road and M-52. Carpooling encour-aged. Next month’s Super Interclub will be hosted by Chelsea on April 11. Details to fol-low. Dave also shared a message from his wife Marilyn, who recently took a stress test that she “flunked”… ”Don’t take things for granted; if something doesn’t feel right, check it out”… she now has two new stents allowing her blood to flow freely.

Grants Update: Mike Dabbs presented information about the usual distribution of grants to nonprofit programs, and the situation this year. Each year, the Grant Policy Committee puts out a call for applications for funds. The grant applications are reviewed and distributed to the appropriate committees: Children and Youth Services, Community Services, Greater Years, Human and Spiritual Values, and International Relations. Each committee decides which proposals to fund and how to distribute the allotted money from the budget. Their recom-mendations are presented to the Board for final approval. Funding for grants between 2002-2015 has averaged $150,000 per year. In addition, funds are granted to support Meals on Wheels, the K-Family clubs, and club sponsored scholarships.

This year, because of the financial constraints at KCW, the Board decided we would be un-able to make our usual grants. Organizations that had submitted proposals were notified with a letter of explanation. There were many responses thanking Kiwanis for past support and expressing encouragement for the current situation.

The Board voted to continue funding to support Meals on Wheels, the K-Family clubs, a few “legacy” programs, and club sponsored scholarships.

There now is an opportunity for members to make a designated or restricted gift to the KCAA Foundation to support a grant applicant of the member’s choice, or to be used by the Grant Policy Committee to fund grant requests. Talk with Mike, Pres. Betsy, or Pres. Elect Alan if you would like more information.

It is the intention of the Board to resume funding grants in the near future, once there are tenants in the building at KCW and revenue from the Sale becomes available again.
