—Daniel 3:25Thoughts on Today’s Verse...

I love the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from Daniel 3. Their faith is solid whether God chooses to save them from the fire, or not. God not only saves them, but those who intended to execute them become the key witnesses of their faith and God’s miraculous deliverance. They are not only sons of the One True God, but they are also examples to all of us who are tempted to compromise our faith to get along in a society that has lost all respect for the Almighty God.

The thoughts on Today’s Verse are written by Phil Ware. You can email questions or comments to [email protected].

Best coverage. Period.

By Rep. Mike SandersThe Oklahoma House

of Representatives is busy reviewing Senate legislation in committee while trying to keep an eye on House measures in the Senate. We have also been busy voting on academic standards and a supplemental funding bill for education and corrections.

New academic standards were required by a 2014 law that overturned Common Core Standards. The Oklahoma Legislature had until this month to approve the new English and mathematics standards. The House approved the standards with recommendations for improvement as they are implemented. If the House and Senate do not agree, the standards will go into effect automatically. These standards do not mandate what materials a teacher uses, but simply set guidelines for what the student should know at the end of each grade level.

I will mention the supplemental funding measure again, because of how important it is to local schools. The supplemental funding will provide $51 million to schools to help them get through the end of this year after the midyear cuts that resulted from the drop in oil prices. Our prison system was already running on a skeleton crew and could not absorb automatic cuts so we also provided $25.6 million to get the Department of Corrections through the end of the year.

Domestic violence continues to be a problem in Oklahoma and nationally. Two bills of interest are Senate Bill 1249 and Senate Bill 1491. The first requires final protective orders to be resolved within six months of service on the defendant. The second

broadens the definition of domestic violence. Current statute defines it as a pattern involving three or more incidents of abuse. This measure would make it two or more and remove a stipulation that it occur within a 12-month period.

The Real ID Act was a federal law put in place in response to the increased incidents of terror in the United States. Oklahoma has been non-compliant with the law, though we have asked for extensions. Senate Bill 1362 would make us compliant with the federal law.

The final piece of legislation from the Senate I want to tell you about is Senate Joint Resolution 65. It would make the Oklahoma Labor Commissioner an appointed position. Currently, the labor commissioner is among the list of statewide elected officials. If we approve this constitutional amendment it would go to a vote of the people.

Lastly, I want to wish everyone a safe and wonderful Easter. This is a time of renewal, family and the celebration of the gift of life and our Christian faith.

In my next column, I will begin to tell you about the progress of House bills in the Senate. As always, I can be reached at (405) 557-7407 or [email protected].

usual in the Kingfisher area but the regular and repeat-ed power blinks and longer outages are a relatively new phenomenon.

Residual problems from the November and December ice storms could be part of the issue, with the weight of the ice creating enough sag in some lines to make them more susceptible to galloping in high winds.

“We’re hoping that remov-ing our line fixed the problem completely, but if nothing else,

we’ve at least helped OG&E isolate what else needs fixing,” Hyatt said.

Slezickey commended Ci-marron Electric for its quick response, as well as the re-sponsiveness of OG&E, which had a representative on site within a half hour of the first outage Tuesday and crews at the scene within an hour.

He also commended OM-PA’s engineering manager Jim McAvoy, who helped troubleshoot the problem and assist with communications between the city and OG&E.

“We apologize for the interruptions of service to our customers the past three months, but we believe the issue has been resolved,” Slezickey said.

He noted that he is work-ing on educational materials explaining how the city gets its power, how it is transmitted to the city’s distribution system and the difference between troubleshooting efforts within the city’s system and exter-nal OG&E troubleshooting, which is outside the city’s control.

tour booking, she said.“We want to add some

new features, including mu-sical entertainment as weath-er permits,” she said. “We’d like to put together packages for tour buses that include food and entertainment so they’re not just coming out for a 15 minute ride through the lights.”

Bonham-Jerkins knows a little bit about entertainment.

In addition to her mar-

county are protected and we also will provide aid to adja-cent counties, but we don’t have the manpower to go two and three counties away and still take care of what we need to do right here at home,” Fire Chief Tony Stewart said.

“We’re the only fire de-partment in the county now that also runs an ambulance service and with the 522 am-bulance district, we’re also responsible to cover an area outside our city,” he said. “We run five man shifts, but with guys off at school or

sick or on leave, we often have only four, which is the minimum we can have to run two ambulances.”

Kingfisher County is not under an official burn ban, but high winds place the fire danger here in the high to ex-treme category, Stewart said.

The Kingfisher Fire De-partment maintains a sign out by its flag pole that is changed each day to reflect that day’s fire danger.

“That’s mainly for the benefit of people in the out-lying rural areas since burn-ing is not allowed in town,”

Stewart said. “We encourage local farmers to keep an eye on that when they’re looking for a safe day to do a con-trolled burn.”

The chief said the county’s 911 dispatchers have been told to advise against con-trolled burns if anyone calls inquring about it.

“There’s no burn ban, so we can’t tell you that you can’t burn, but if you do it un-der these extreme conditions and the fire gets away from you, you are 100 percent lia-ble for any damage caused,” he said.

Other possibilities for the park include ice skating,uti-lizing a rented artificial ice surface, a craft show tent and other activities to get people out of their cars and walking through the park.

Bonham-Jerkins said her group has been talking to

former KIL board members about being advisors to the process.

“We want to build on and honor the great tradition KIL has already established,” she said. “That gives us a lot to do in this first year in an itty-bitty amount of time but we have a lot of neat ideas and we’re really motivated to make it happen.”

Bonham-Jerkins said she’s been contacted by owners of displays who are interested in making them available again.

Once an inventory is es-tablished of existing displays that are coming back, the group will determine what else is needed, she said.

The new group will be set-ting up a Facebook page soon as a way for the community to interact and also to express interest in volunteering.

A Bartlesville man escaped arrest following a Hennessey traffic stop after an alleged fight and foot chase with a Hen-nessey police officer March 12.

Kyle Wayne Stewart, 45, was charged Wednesday in Kingfisher County District Court with aggravated assault and battery upon a police offi-cer, a felony, and obstructing an officer, a misdemeanor.

Described by Hennessey Police Officer David Fuksa as being over 6 feet tall and weigh-ing between 190-220 pounds, Stewart allegedly refused to remain in his vehicle when Fuksa pulled him over for an alleged speeding violation at Sixth and Main in Hennessey.

As Fuksa approached, Stewart allegedly jumped out of the vehicle and started run-ning northeast into the alley.

Despite Fuksa’s multiple attempts to catch and subdue Stewart, including using a taser and collapsible baton, Stewart still managed to escape, but not before allegedly breaking Fuk-sa’s finger, grabbing his geni-tals and striking him multiple times with fists and elbows, according to the affidavit.

Stewart allegedly is wanted in Canadian County on felony drug warrants.

Two passengers in the ve-hicle, one of whom identified herself as Stewart’s wife, were allowed to leave the scene after they were searched and also checked for warrants, but the vehicle was seized and towed when neither passenger could produce a driver’s license, ac-cording to the affidavit.

Fuksa continued to search the neighborhood, but a war-rant for Stewart’s arrest was still outstanding at press time.
