Sheriff reportJune 15 - Kingfisher

County Deputy Sheriff Mandy Cox took a report from Nina Collums of Dover who reported a break-in at her home.

Collums stated that she had just purchased the home at 121 N. Anderson and was in the process of moving. She entered the home through he side door and noticed closet doors open that should have been shut.

She proceeded to the front door and saw that the door jam had been broken and trim had been placed on the floor next to the wall. She did not observe any damage to the door itself or the storm door.

Collums said that she did not have very much of her personal items moved into the house yet, and she did not notice anything missing at this time.

The vast majority of the more than 40 species of snakes found in Oklahoma are nonvenomous, but that does not mean they do not strike fear in many people.

However, snakes would rather avoid people and are incredibly important animals.

“Snakes, both venom-ous and nonvenomous, cause great anxiety in many people and are considered cold-blooded killers,” said Dwayne Elmore, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension wildlife special-ist. “They are cold-blooded of course, but unless you are a rodent, frog, insect or earthworm, you have little to fear.”

Fortunately, most of the snakes capable of inflicting injury are very docile.

“Many bites occur as a result of someone harassing the snake or putting their hands under objects with-out looking first,” he said. “Rattlesnakes come to mind when most people think of venomous snakes.”

Note the term venom-ous, rather than poisonous. Venomous animals are those that inject a toxin directly into their prey as opposed to a poisonous animal, which contains a toxin within por-tions of their body that cause harm if ingested or touched.

“Several species of rattle-snake do occur in Oklahoma, including the timber, west-ern diamond-backed, prai-rie, western massasauga and western pygmy,” Elmore said. “The prairie rattlesnake

can, on occasion, show some temper, but the remainder are typically mild in nature.”

The copperhead is a com-mon venomous snake in the eastern half of Oklahoma. They can be unbelievably docile, but do occasionally bite noisy dogs and errant hands.

“Their beautiful, but cryp-tic coloration calls for a sharp eye when moving yard de-bris,” he said.

It is commonly believed every water snake is a ven-omous “water-moccasin;” however, this is not accurate.

“While there are several species of water snakes in Oklahoma, only one species, the western cottonmouth, is venomous. This species is confined to eastern and southeastern Oklahoma and is easily identified by the signature white lining of the mouth,” Elmore said. “Al-though cottonmouth often act aggressive, their bark is worse than their bite.”

All snakes provide im-portant ecological services, including those that are venomous. Elmore suggests using some caution when spending time outdoors, and simply walking away from snakes you may encounter, as they are an important part of the ecosystem and do not need to be harassed or killed.

Anna Jane Baker

After many years of fight-ing Alzheimer's, Jane (also lovingly known as Granan-na) passed away peacefully on June 23, 2015, at the age of 89 in the Memory Care of Brookdale-Cedar Ridge in Broken Arrow.

Jane was born on Aug. 20, 1925, to Joe and Evelyn Han-sel out on a ranch outside Stanton, Texas.

She was always so thank-ful and proud that she was raised by her grandmother, Janie Birdwell. Times were not easy as she was growing up during the depression living in Big Spring, Texas, but it made her a very strong-willed, determined and in-dependent woman.

In 1943, during wartime, Jane graduated from Big Spring High School with a government sponsored scholarship to attend a Mis-souri business school, but before she could get there, the college closed. Deter-mined to make something of herself, she moved to Dallas where she went to work at North American Aviation plant as a real life "Rosie the Riveter" where she worked on the tail cones of the B-25 bombers.

Beside the pride she had for her family, this was an accomplishment that meant so much to Jane taking part in World War II, doing her part, and one that she talked of frequently, always ready to show off her "souvenir" broken finger as she called it - a finger broken working on those B-25 bombers or her hard muscle in her right arm she got from riveting on those tails. Making enough money while working at the plant, once the war was over, she was able to then attend and graduate from Draughn's Business College.

In 1952, she and Ray Val-entine Baker were married in Big Spring.

In 1962, when the oil boom was going on in Hennessey, Okla., Ray was transferred from West Texas to Hen-nessey with El Paso Natural Gas. In Hennessey, they hap-pily raised two daughters, Becky and Bonye. Jane was such a special and loving mother who gave her life to her two girls. She worked tirelessly to support their many activities including piano, Brownies, dance, twirling and 4-H making many costumes and beauti-ful clothes for them. Always a leader, she was such a great example for Becky and Bonye.

She was a wonderful seamstress winning many grand champion ribbons for her crocheted and needle-point items at the Kingfisher County Fair and State Fair through her home extension club. She held office for many years in her club.

AREA DEATH

J ane ' s g randmo t her raised her in church, where she became a Christian as a child. After moving to Hen-nessey, she raised her girls and attended First Baptist Church in Hennessey all through the years where she was treasurer for her Sunday School Class for many years.

In 2008, after 55 years of marriage, Ray passed away. At that point, she resided in Edmond in the home of her daughter, Becky and husband, David. They had so much fun taking Jane on vacation and a lot of weekend "adventure" drives seeing all of Oklahoma. She was cared for while Becky worked by Busi, a wonderful companion for Jane, until Jane moved to the Memory Care in 2014 in Broken Ar-row, which was close to her daughter, Bonye, where they got to have many hours of good times together. Becky and Bonye got to have many memorable times with Jane, ones they will never forget in her final years and days.

The care she got from the team at Brookdale-Ce-dar Ridge and Physician's Choice Hospice could not have been better, and the love they all showed to our mother means so much to us. She never lost her ornery personality and beautiful smile, giving us many, many good times, laughter and memories that we will cher-ish forever. She knew her family to the end.

Jane is survived by her daughter, Becky Lippert and husband David of Edmond and daughter, Bonye New-comb and husband Jim of Jenks, as well as her loving grandchildren, Tyler New-comb and wife Leslie of Bro-ken Arrow, Derrick Lippert and wife Catherine of Okla-homa City, Tobin Newcomb of Oklahoma City, Duncan Lippert of Coolidge, Kan., and Taylor Newcomb of Wichita Falls, Texas, and three great-grandchildren, Levi Newcomb, Audrey "Anna" Newcomb, and Madeline "Jane" Lippert, who both little great-granddaughters were lovingly named after their great-grandmother, Anna Jane.

It has meant so much to our family all the sweet friends from Hennessey as well as her nieces and neph-ews who have checked on her through these years. It excited mother when we told her who had called or sent her cards. She still would bring up friends and family who she loved dearly.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 26, at Gracelawn Ceme-tery in Edmond. Arrange-ments are under direction of Matthews Funeral Home, Edmond.

Supreme court wrong; what to do

By Ryan T. Anderson(The Daily Signal)

Today is a significant setback for all Americans who believe in the Constitution, the rule of law, democratic self-government, and marriage as the union of one man and one woman. The U.S. Supreme Court got it wrong: It should not have mandated all 50 states to redefine marriage.

This is judicial activism: noth-ing in the Constitution requires the redefinition of marriage, and the court imposed its judgment about a policy matter that should be decided by the American people and their elected representatives. The court got marriage and the Constitution wrong just like they got abortion and the Constitution wrong 42 years ago with Roe v. Wade. Five unelected judges do not have the power to change the truth about marriage or the truth about the Constitution.

The court summarized its rul-ing in this way—which highlights that they have redefined marriage, substituting their own opinion for that of the citizens:

The limitation of marriage to opposite-sex couples may long have seemed natural and just, but its inconsistency with the central mean ing of the fundamental right to marry is now manifest.

Manifest to five unelected judges that is. Not to the majority of American citizens who voted to define marriage correctly. As Chief Justice Roberts pointed out in dissent:

If you are among the many Americans – of whatever sexual orientation – who favor expanding same-sex marriage, by all means celebrate today’s decision. Cele-brate the achievement of a desired goal. Celebrate the opportunity for a new expression of commitment to a partner. Celebrate the avail-ability of new benefits. But do not celebrate the Constitution. It had nothing to do with it.

That’s exactly right. When it comes to the majority opinion, the Constitution “had nothing to do with it.”

We must work to restore the constitutional authority of citizens and their elected officials to make marriage policy that reflects the truth about marriage. We the peo-ple must explain what marriage is, why marriage matters, and why redefining marriage is bad for society.

For marriage policy to serve the common good it must reflect the truth that marriage unites a man and a woman as husband and wife so that children will have both a mother and a father. Marriage is based on the anthropological truth that men and woman are distinct and complementary, the biological fact that reproduction depends on a man and a woman, and the social reality that children deserve a mother and a father.

The government is not in the marriage business because it’s a sucker for adult romance. No, marriage isn’t just a private affair; marriage is a matter of public pol-icy because marriage is society’s best way to ensure the well-being of children. State recognition of marriage acts as a powerful social norm that encourages men and women to commit to each other so they will take responsibility for any children that follow.

Redefining marriage to make it a genderless institution fun-damentally changes marriage: It makes the relationship more about the desires of adults than about the needs—or rights—of children. It teaches the lie that mothers and fathers are interchangeable.

Because the court has inap-propriately redefined marriage everywhere, there is urgent need for policy to ensure that the gov-ernment never penalizes anyone for standing up for marriage. As discussed in my new book, “Truth Overruled: The Future of Marriage and Religious Freedom,” we must work to protect the freedom of speech, association and religion of those who continue to abide by the truth of marriage as union of man and woman.

At the federal level, the First Amendment Defense Act is a good place to start. It says that the federal government cannot discriminate against people and institutions that speak and act according to their belief that marriage is a union of one man and one woman. States need similar policies.

Recognizing the truth about marriage is good public policy. Today’s decision is a significant setback to achieving that goal. We must work to reverse it and recom-mit ourselves to building a strong marriage culture because so much of our future depends upon it.
