Object Storage – EG Swift
• Storage For the Web – accessed via APIs/URLs. Images, Videos, Sensor data, IoT data, DB, tweets, FB entries, email
• Infinitely scalable, ultra reliable, (eventually consistent)
• Metered - Pay as you go – Self serviced – Write once, read occasionally.
• Language is Puts and Gets over IP
File Storage
• Local FS or NAS, protocols CIFS, NFS – mounted, relationship based. Shared files, company-wide access.
• Scalability, reliability and cost constrained.
• Great for partial file access, Relational DB, content editing/rendering.
• Open, Close, Read, Write, Append, Chmod, Chown, Touch, Delete, Copy, Move
Block Storage
• The native language of Hard Disk Drives. No concept of files, Operating systems etc.
• Antiquated but very standardised. Of no benefit to the higher layers. Private.
• Need to know Direct Attached and SAN storage, FC, iSCSI, SAS, SATA, LUNs, provisioning, snapshot, etc…
• Read, Write, Format, on SCSI (over SAS, iSCSI or FC) or SATA
