The Irish National Stud is one of our country’s
best locations for a celebration as well as just
for a day out; it is an angelic stretch of land
that enriches all who enter and
leaves nothing to
be desired. Found-
ed in 1901 by Colo-
nel Hall Walker, the
location has been
the home of some
of the best thor-
oughbred horses
of the world; in-
cluding Minoru,
named after the
designer of the
Stud’s famous
Japanese Gar-
den, who took
King Edward VII
of England to
victory in the 1909 derby. Along with its
reputation as a breeding facility, the Irish Na-
tional Stud is home to the divine, transcend-
ent beauty of the aforementioned Japanese
Gardens. The garden was an attempt to de-
pict the ‘Life of Man’ and is something worth
being experienced by all. As well as this there
is also St. Fiachra’s Garden and the Horse Mu-
seum to keep you entertained
for the en-
tire day. The
location is
perfect for
communions
and confir-
mations and
also wed-
dings and any
other celebra-
tion you could
have need of.
Along with the
outdoor facili-
ties the Irish na-

has a restaurant,
children’s play area, gift shop, guided
tours and an area for picnics; it is perfect for

1) Reduce your saltA lot of bars offer salty snacks such as peanuts and chips for free, after customers get thirsty
they will order drinks to quench their thirst. So watch out for salty snacks!!
2) Take up a hobby
It isn’t sufficient to rely on just 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity per day. Moving from bed
to office chair, and back to bed, isn’t a healthy way to live. Buy a motion sensor gaming console
that lets you enjoy social games with friends and family, plan weekend trips, clean your house
once a week, dance, play sports, the list is endless. Get out of the coffee shop and dining table
rut, and you’ll have fun along with the healthy weight loss.
3) Combat stressStress is always detrimental to healthy weight loss in the long run. Find ways to combat stress
and you’ll soon realise that your diet and exercise aren’t sabotaged anymore, and that you
truly do see results. Look at yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises, or simple hobbies like
reading to fight stress.
4) Opt for healthy holidaysWhy go all the way with healthy weight loss, when one tiny vacation will just come along and
topple it all? Healthy vacations aren’t impossible. Take a look at how you can eat smart on a
holiday, and then at bodyweight workouts that you can carry with you wherever you go, to
understand how to holiday right. Above all, remember that these are lifelong habits that’ll help
you stay fit forever and not short term weight loss quick fixes.

The Lego Movie may be one giant advertisement, but all the way to its plastic-mat foundation, it’s an earnest piece of work — a cash grab with a heart. Made for, with and about Legos, the movie is also made for, with and about imagination, and when that association seems completely natural, it’s a win all around.
The movie chooses as its hero the unimaginative but boundlessly positive Emmet (voiced by Chris Pratt), who’s just another average Lego guy living in the big Lego city going about his regular Lego day. As with most things Lego, there’s an instruction manual for everything, and Emmet eats, watches and says exactly what he’s sup-posed to. The instructions say that’s how you fit in, make friends, lead a happy life — only somehow that hasn’t worked out for Emmet, who doesn’t really have friends yet. (There’s an unsubtle critique of mainstream con-formity going on here, exem-plified by the transparently dumb yet incredibly catchy Lego pop hit “Everything is AWESOME,” which won’t be leaving your head for days after you hear it.)
Animated in 3-D, but made to look like it’s a stop-motion joint, the movie takes plea-sure in translating how we move to a Lego-based reality and revels in the goofiness of a world operating under Lego-specific laws of physics.
When you ride a horse its legs stay frozen even at a gallop; your head can swivel 180 de-grees; and Krazy Glue spells immobilizing doom.
The self-conscious, irrever-ent tone holds steady as the stakes increase. When Emmet finds a strange red piece that sticks itself to his back, Wyldstyle identifies him as The Special — the smartest, most talented, most inter-esting, most superlative-in-everything person who’s des-tined to save the Lego world from the order-obsessed Lord
Business (Will Ferrell). A sharp swerve near the
movie’s end almost sends our heroes jumping the Lego shark, but it’s hard to fault the filmmakers for getting a little saccharine; they’re sincere about celebrating imagina-tion and play. They’ve deliv-ered a story that could have been spun from the head of a kid sitting down to play with his Legos — and for adults ready to dust off their child-hood sets, they’ve captured that feeling of creative pos-sibility remarkably well.

19 2 2014 KILKENNY REPORTER
Max Casey takes a look at the best of music, film and literature
In the early 1990’s, Polish director Krzysztof Kielslowski directed a series of films that came to be known as the three colours trilogy, a collection about life in contemporary France that each take a look at what that famous French motto: ‘Liberty, Equality, Fraternity’ mean in modern society. Over the next few weeks, I will cover the trilogy as they were made (Blue, White, Red) and then write a piece about the series as a whole.
The first film, Blue, is about liberty. Our main character is Julie, a woman who survives the car crash that killed her husband and daughter. After a botched suicide attempt at the hospital, Julie disassociates herself from all the people in her life in an attempt to escape her depression; she moves into the city of Paris without informing anyone.
One of the most apparent elements of Blue is how sparsely dialogue is made use of; the film has long periods of silence punctuated with quick scenes of conversations that gives the movie an airy atmosphere.
The story and themes are presented to us through the visuals and the music, not words. As you may expect from the title; colour plays a huge role in this film, and each of the three main colours of the trilogy play a part. Blue is a constant, and seems to represent Julie’s old life that she cannot escape from. There is an irony present in how blue is supposed to represent liberty but actually comes to mean repression; White and Red both make similar points with their respective subject matters. White is often contrasted with blue, and can be seen to represent
Julie’s new, hollower existence following her escape to the city.
Red is perversion, it is the colour of the strip club Julie visits and the colour of the pills she attempts to end her life with. It is the least used of the three colours but when it is used it is overpowering. The other major motif of the film is music, Julie’s husband was a composer (though it is eluded that Julie wrote most of his work) and important moments of the film are often bookmarked with a short fade to black and rush of instruments before the plot recommences.
The idea that it is impossible to escape your past is deeply entrenched in all forms of storytelling; from Gatsby to Brian Friel to Mad Men and it is a topic at the heart of Blue; I cannot recommend this film enough.
Most artists find their peak in the early to mid-phase of their careers, whatever their medium may be, but Yeats was a poet who started great and continued improving until his final days. This makes Yeats an incredibly important poet, as there is so little truly great art that explores the mires of old age and the work of Yeats is some of the best you will come across. Politics is a poem that had its debut in 1938, a turbulent and highly political time for the world.
The Spanish Civil War was raging, the Third Reich was about to start a fresh world war; it looked as if war was about to consume the world
and Yeats was tired. It is one of the man’s simplest poems, at only twelve lines and one stanza, and is easy to understand upon one reading.
It’s simply Yeats looking at a pretty girl and brooding on the
point of a life spent debating and researching in the political ring; Yeats would much rather hold her in his arms. The writing of the poem is also uncomplicated, no convoluted use of rhythm or prose it is just Yeats at his most clear.
As students of Yeats will know the man spent many years writing political poetry like the famous September 1913 and Easter 1916 and there is an obvious tinge of regret and bitterness in the poem if you are aware of this context.
The final two lines read: ‘But O that I were young again/and held her in my arms’ and is a line that perfectly encapsulates the late poetry of Yeats and was the last poem that Yeats wrote before his death the following year. It is simply a beautiful work of art and the perfect end to one of the greatest poets who ever lived.

The gatefold picture of The Queen is Dead features the band members standing outside the Salford Lads Club, closed and garnished in graffiti with a sign adorned in the English rose. The entire scene reeks of decay, a place in decline; and this is a theme general to all of The Smiths music but one that especially comes up in their 1986 magnum opus: The Queen is Dead.
The Smiths are an English band formed in 1982 in Manchester where they were among the first wave of great bands to come from that area. Along with Joy Division and The Buzzcocks, The Smiths pioneered a sound that would revive the city of Manchester and make it one of the most important cultural centres of England in the late 20th Century. Albums like The Queen is Dead can be difficult to write about
as they’ve been borrowed, adapted and copied so many times that it becomes impossible to understand what exactly they did in the first place that made them so special. The two most distinctive elements of The Smiths sound is the jangly guitar of Johnny Marr and the vocals of Morrissey.
Though the most immediately apparent element of The Smiths is Morrissey’s vocals; they are poetic, thrilling and hilarious most of the time.
There are a few pure comedy vocals on this album like
Frankly, Mr Shankly with Morrissey criticizing the head of his record label, self-critical works like Bigmouth Strikes Again, morose and tragic songs of love like I Know It’s Over, a song that says if you have no love you might as well be dead; and occasionally a song involving politics, most notable the title track.
Morrissey is certainly not a fan of the Queen; and he opens the song with ‘Her very lowness with her head in a sling/I’m truly sorry but it sounds like a wonderful thing’. Morrissey’s vocals are at their most silly here but the music is at its most epic; creating a hilarious contrast.
The Smiths were an anomaly in the 1980’s; a band that was both rock and pop but delivered a sound that was so far away from what those terms meant at the time to make preconceptions meaningless. They were endlessly creative and massively influential; and The Queen is Dead is by far their best album. It is a must.

Captain Phillips is a film based on the true story of Richard Phillips, captain of the MV Maersk Alabama whose ship was hijacked and he taken prisoner in 2009.
The film, though somewhat loose on the details (also according to the ship’s crew Phillips wasn’t quite the hero that he is perceived to be in this film) the film is still a fantastic adventure that is one of the
year’s best films so far. The film is brimming with tension and suspense that will have you on the edge of your seat throughout its 134 minutes.
The director is Paul Greengrass, famous for United 93 and two out of three of the Bourne films. Not only is Captain Phillips his most nail biting film but also his most emotionally powerful one. It is simply a must-see DVD.
The Kilkenny River Court is one of this city’s best locations, located just off the high street the establishment functions as a hotel as well as a leisure centre and restaurant and is the perfect place for meetings and weddings.
The River Court
wonderfully overlooks the Nore and is the perfect place to relax with an excellent gym, swimming pool and a respectably priced and absolutely terrific restaurant with a fantastic wine selection.
As well as weddings this business is also
perfectly suited for anniversaries, confirmations and communions, and Mothers day as well as any other celebration you are due.
I highly recommend The River Court for celebrations, a place to stay as well as just a good meal.
According to the ESB website last Wednesday Ireland had 260,000 building without power and 3,400 failures across the country. The majority of this was concentrated in the South East.
Though the areas without power have been significantly diminished, there are still areas suffering
and a significantly larger number without phone lines or the internet.
This may not be as much of a problem to those in the city, but in the countryside a tree falling on your line or flood water arriving at your house is a constant worry.
Roads are gone and we all must work together to solve these issues.

Sennheiser HD 598The Sennheiser HD 598 is the best open headphone you will find for under €200. For those who don’t know, all headphones leak sound out when used; sealed headphones make
sure this sound doesn’t leak out to the world but at great cost to the quality.
Open headphones allow the sound to leak and our designed for home use and generally with an extra amp to power them. For the cost of this you’ll receive a quality previ-ously un-thought of in
closed headphones twice the cost.
The Sennheiser HD 598 is the perfect open headphone for beginner, it is exceedingly comfortable and with incredible sound-stage and quality; I would recommend it for anyone interesting in getting into hi-fi.
It has almost been a year since the biggest leak in US history took place and the full extent of the NSA’s spying efforts began to be revealed, it has been a turbulent time and we now have a book pertaining to
Snowden’s story, how he did it and why he did it.
It’s an interesting book that manages to turn a dry political drama story into some sort of nail biting espionage thriller; the extent to which
the NSA has spied on almost every country in the world is absolutely terrifying and makes for a great villain.
The Snowden Files is an engaging and fun read, even when it’s horrifying, I recommend it.

Flappy BirdFlappy Bird was recently the subject of controversy as it was taken down from the app store and Google Play on the 10th of February; apparently this was due to how addictive the game was, its developers were losing sleep.
It was a controversial decision. As of the writing of this there is an iphone 5 with Flappy Bird on ebay.ie with a bid of €8,068
(and 63 previous bids) and phones in the US have been sold upwards of $90,000.
The game is so simple, a bird starts in the air, you tap the screen to make him jump and stay up and try to avoid barriers; a great example of a simple but effective idea. If you can find a phone with the game on it or get to try the thousands of rip-offs, you’ll find a fun and addictive phone game that I would recommend.
John MurryJohn Murry is an American singer-songwriter who has been on his way to popularity since the huge critical acclaim of his debut solo album, The Graceless Age in 2013.
It is a sombre album, obsessed with the ghost of the US South (he is the second cousin of Faulkner
after all) and it was one of the most interesting albums of that year.
He will be playing in Kilkenny on Friday the 21st at the Set Theatre, starting at 8:30pm with tickets at €16.50.
This is your chance to discover a great musician on the ground floor, I highly recommend the gig.
Young Fathers is a Scottish Hip-Hop group who have recently released their first studio album, Dead.
The group’s sound is a mix of Reggae, African music and Lo-fi electronic music that made their first two mixtapes some of
the most interesting albums to come out those years and Dead continues to develop their sound.
It’s a very interesting experience, and one that deserves the attention that it has received in recent weeks, I highly recommend the album.
It seems like this game has been in development for ever, debuted in late 2011 by Obsidian Games, the game fell through when THQ collapsed in late 2012 and was only later picked up again by Ubisoft and is set to come out on the 7th of March.
The game is an RPG in
the style of old Fallout Games and is voiced by the actors of South Park so even if you don’t like the gameplay you’ll be laughing along.
The game will be released for PS3, XBOX 360 and PC, it is not suitable for those under 18.

Dallas Buyers Club is a new film directed by Jean-Marc Vallée about the AIDS epidemic in Dallas, Texas; it tells the true life story of a man who works to get patients what they need to survive after he himself is diagnosed with the disease.
He sets up The Dallas Buyers Club, and has his prejudices knocked out of
him by the hundreds of homosexuals and trans-sexuals that he comes into contact with throughout the film. The film sounds some-what preachy but it truly is not, it’s a splendid movie and the main character’s performance by Matthew McConaughey is absolutely wonderful, I absolutely recommend it.

In Castlecomer with Chubby Brennan
WE HAVE a motley crew of brilliance this week. We turn back the clock to 1968 when the then Garda Kieran Brennan, colloquially Kierney of Donaguile, pa-trolled the Gap of Dunloe, Kate Kearney’s Cottage et al.
Kieran, we note from his pic on his trusty steed, was but a whipper snapper at that stage of his illustrious career.
In his own words, he re-calls that he could make the weights at that time but never got a call from noted trainer Willie Mullins.
And we pay tribute to the good Kilkenny folk who have just held a Valentine’s Wellie Race in the Alps.
Kilkenny woman Rosaleen Crotty was delighted with the turnout which repre-sented seven nationalities.
There was great fun and games but above all there was the wonderful achieve-ment of holding a Wellie Race in the mountains of Switzerland.
There was an attempt at the Siege of Ennis by par-ticipants and that was high-ly commended as 93.5% (official figures!) of those
involved had never danced the Siege before.
Local lottosGolf €8,200; GAA
€2,400.
The PantoWell that’s it for another
year. A huge thank you to everyone who made this year’s show possible es-pecially our directors, cho-reographers, musicians, lighting designers, sound engineers, set designers, painters, those involved in costumes and make-up, our backstage crew, cater-ers, box office and front of house staff.
Thanks a million too to all the wonderful mammys who supervised backstage, our prompter, all our gen-erous sponsors, photogra-phers, the great audiences throughout the week and last but not least our fabu-lously talented cast and chorus!
Hope to see you all again on stage next year!
Thanks again for all your hard work.
Best of luck and good health to all from Deenside Players.

The course is in wonderful condition despite the winter weather and members can sharpen their games ahead of the drive in over the coming weeks.

name for the level of volunteerism for many many years and this year it is hoped that the members can help out on the course once more to ensure its marvelous presentation. There is a list in both locker rooms and if you are interested please put your contact number on the sheet posted. All help is greatly appreciated.

CastlecomerFebruary asserted the fist
of elemental might across the country and particularly in the county of Kilkenny. Terrifically high winds buffetted long established trees, reducing
many to lumber that blocked roads and access. Although the original landscape displaying magnificent, ancient trees has been altered dramatically along many avenues, ways and roads throughout Kilkenny as a result, Castlecomer Golf course endured and triumphed.
With stunningly majestic trees pre-dating any living being who could appreciate them, the avenues and ways of Castlecomer Golf course remained practically unchanged. One tree, edging the 18th fairway became the sacrificial lamb to honour the elements that could have demanded much more.
On Tuesday, the ladies set out in valiant fashion. Although the play was stopped, they enjoyed the blanket of thick snow that came in a flurry to render a little white ball at one with nature.
Thankfully, the February fling of wild weather seems to have abated, leaving Castlecomer Golf Course beautifully untouched and unchanged. Competitions continued over the weekend with stalwart committment by the members who seemed determined to be as enduring and upstanding as the course itself.
MensKen Hovenden experienced the
unbeatable thrill of a hole in one on the par three ninth. It was great consolation for him because his team, ‘The Spoons’ with playing partners of Victor Smyth, Michael Coogan and Seamus Coogan, had to settle for second place in the winter league.
The winners, ‘The Scrubbers’ of John Smith, Michael Daly, JD Harding and Paul Rice, refused to relinquish their lead after the unsettling last minute dash to overtake them. They pulled out that extra effort and brought their team over the finish line to
claim the winning spot in this enthusiastically contested winter league.
Now it’s done and they have proven themselves to be the winning team. Good job, lads, and well deserved. It was Michael Daly’s win with 36pts in the weekend winter competition that finally clinched the deal.
LottoThere was no winner of the
jackpot on Monday, 10th February. The numbers drawn were 3, 9, 15, 28. With tickets at only €2 everyone can get a chance to predict, before the event, what numbers could lead to a win of the jackpot which stands at €8,200 for next weeks draw.
Opportunity to play on-line through the new web-site is coming on stream soon. The launch of the new web-site and gateway to greater access for club activities and other benefits in the Castlecomer region is something to look forward to and mark as a favourite to see and share.
Member competitionA chance to have free
membership is available to everyone through a special competition run by the Kilkenny People. Look out for the notice in the paper. This competition is available to existing members and to anyone who would love to become a member of Castlecomer Golf Club, free of charge.
What a wonderful opportunity for one and all. Remember to tell anyone who has ever wished to be a member of a golf club that there is a chance to do just that for free through this competition.
The joint captains drive in is happening on 23/2/14. Bring a camera and get that perfect picture capturing the event that possibly only you can get from
your perspective. Share the happiness with Captain Gerry Dunne and Lady Captain Ita Madigan on this unique day to start the golfing year.
Time sheets for the shot-gun start at 10am and 1pm are up. They are on the club house notice board. Both Captains are making a great effort on behalf of the club and members and it’s lovely to see the reciprocal great effort and support of the members for them too. It promises to be a fun day for all.
