Lazy days of summer

Blessings, Michelle

“L azy days of summer” is probably a phrase of days gone by. Our generation hustles and bustles year round with activities, events and responsibilities.

While I do believe in finding that delicate bal-ance between busy time and down time, Mid-

land Odessa has some very high quality services to enrich the lives of your children, and I am proud to introduce several of them here!

Some of the NEW info in this issue: • Bingham Dance, Tae Kwon Do and Gymnastics – THE premier dance company in Midland! • Boundless Art by Meg – Therapeutic Art using the Mneme Method• First Steps Music – Little ones learning early! • West Texas Music Academy – We can’t say enough about this place. It’s EVERYTHING you would want in a music facility for your child at any age. Violin, guitar, piano, voice lessons, and more. Kindermusik also available for the little ones. • Matthews Martial Arts – Master Jason and Sifu Monica will whip your whole family into shape!!! Call them for kids and adults. I was impressed with how many MOMS were showing up in Karate uniforms.• The Jumping Party – Not just for birthdays, but all summer open jump! • Vacation Bible Schools – Take time for the most important lesson of all. • Cinderella is here in West Texas and is ready to make your little girl’s birthday a dream come true!

Fierce female warriors, fa-miliar zoo animals, and love-able whales are heading to screens this month. Here’s a look at what’s new in the-aters and on DVD in June.

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMANPG-13 for intense sequences of violence and ac-tion, and brief sensuality. In theaters 6/01. Ok for kids 13+. Reel Preview: 4 out of 5 Reels. www.snowwhiteandthehuntsman.comThis retelling of the classic fairytale takes a dark turn with scary Charlize Theron playing the soul-sucking evil queen who decides that Snow White (Kristen Stewart) is by no means the fair-est of them all. So the queen sends a handsome huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) to kill the innocent girl, but instead he ends up training her to be-come a fierce warrior capable of bringing down the queen. Director Rupert Sanders has no ma-jor credits to his name, but no matter, because the female warrior storyline is epic. Also epic? The dwarves: Ian McShane, Johnny Harris, Bob Hoskins, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, Brian Glee-son, Ray Winstone, and Nick Frost.

MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE’S MOST WANTEDPG for some mild action and rude humor. In the-aters 6/08 (2D, 3D). Ok for kids 6+. Reel Preview: 3.5 out of 5 Reels. www.madagascarmovie.com

JANE’S REEL RATING SYSTEM

One Reel: Even the Force can’t save it. Two Reels: Coulda been a contenderThree Reels: Something to talk about.Four Reels: You want the truth? Great flick! Five Reels: Wow! The stuff dreams are made of.

That quartet of loveable animals is back, and they’re still trying to get home to their beloved Central Park Zoo in New York City. But first, Alex (voiced by Ben Stiller), Marty (Chris Rock), Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Melman (David Schwim-mer) need to find those misbehavin’ penguins. So they travel to Monte Carlo where they crash a party and get in trouble with Animal Control. They’re soon joined by the penguins, King Julian (Sacha Baron Cohen), Maurice (Cedric the Enter-tainer), the monkeys, and a performing llama. But how does this rag-tag group travel through Europe without attracting attention? They join a traveling circus – the perfect cover. Jessica Chas-tain, Martin Short, Bryan Cranston, Andy Richter, and Frances McDormand also voice characters in this cute installment to the Madagascar fran-chise. While not as entertaining as the original movie, this is still a fun flick for little ones.

BRAVENot yet rated; likely PG. In theaters 6/22. Ok for kids 7+. Reel Preview: 5 out of 5 Reels. disney.go.com/braveFemale warriors are rocking the big screen this month, and this one sets the Disney Princess theme on its head, causing brave moms every-where to fall to their knees and thank the film gods. Set in Scotland during mythical times, Princess Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) is an aspiring archer who makes a reckless choice that goes against all the customs in her king-dom. The resulting chaos and peril forces her to spring into action and set things right. But as the title says, she’s Brave with a capital B, so here’s a note to whatever beastly curse is out there: Be afraid. Be very afraid. The sublime voice cast features Emma Thompson, Kevin McKidd, Rob-bie Coltrane, Billy Connolly, Craig Ferguson and Julie Walters.

ABAAbout 1 in every 400 children has diabetes, 1

in every 700 children has Down Syndrome, and 1 in 303 children has Cerebral Palsy. As of 2012, the prevalence of Autism has sky rocketed to 1 in 88 children. That is a 289.5% increase over the last 12 years according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention!

While these results are staggering for most people, parents of these 1 in 88 children are concerned less with the statistics and more so

with what options are available for their child. Ac-cording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the leading behavioral therapy for children with Autism. ABA is a behavior modification science that is designed to target a behavior and system-atically change it. The idea behind ABA is to posi-tively change behaviors in a safe environment.

Some of the behaviors exhibited by children on the Autism Spectrum include but are not limited to: aggression, non-compliance, self-injurious behaviors, tantrums, inability to communicate, self-stimulatory behaviors, inability to engage in tasks, inability to potty train, lack of adaptation skills, no tolerance for change, and obsessions. All of which are targeted through ABA therapy.

While there is no cure for Autism, there are options to improve the life of your child and your family dynamic. You can view the Autism Speaks web site for further information or please feel free to call Amanda Quine at 432-570-4400 for a local reference.

By Terri SchroeterPromoter of Positive Self-Esteem for Children

There are approximately 81 days during the summer to improve your SELF-ESTEEM and be a happier, healthier YOU! Self-Esteem is what you think about yourself. Good or bad, your thoughts of yourself impact your everyday life and behavior. I have something I want you to work on this sum-mer. This is going to take a little bit of your time to get started and then only about 3 minutes a day.

Wouldn’t you say your WORTH 3 minutes a day? I want you to start by writing down at least 5 things you LIKE about yourself or others LIKE about you and why. You can like your sense of humor, your smile, your will-ingness to help oth-ers, your eyes, your laugh. I will give you an example to get you started.1. I LIKE my red hair.

81 Days to a Happier, More positive youWhy? Because it makes me different. Or it could be because your grandma or your dad has red hair. And that’s cool to look like your family, right?

WOW, you might be saying right now- I hate my red hair, because it makes me different and I get teased about it! Here is what I have to say about that- You are very special and not here by accident. Want proof? Isaiah 64:8. “We are the clay and You are the potter. We all are formed by your hand.” So you see, it’s not by accident that you look like you do. Can you stop people from teasing you about it - maybe not. But you can know you are valuable and perfect in your own way, and that you don’t need to believe negative things others say. Ok, now it’s your turn:

2. I LIKE _________________________________

Why?_____________________________________

_________________________________________.I want you to do this for June. Then in July write

down 5 new things. Then in August, 5 more. I want you to say these out loud every day. I want

you to think of your brain like a filing cabinet, full of positive, happy thoughts. By the time you get back to school there are going to be at least 15 positive things you have stored in your brain’s “filing cabinet”. So if anyone teases you, all you have to do is remember something you like about yourself to cancel out the negative.

Have a blessed summer and I’ll be checking in on you in September. With your parent’s permis-sion, email us your LIKES and how it’s helping build your Self-Esteem to [email protected].

For kids and their boundless energy, dance is a great alternative or addition to team sports. Most studios offer classes for children as young as two. Dance is an excellent all-around way to keep fit and healthy. Dance builds stamina, flex-ibility, strength and coordination and helps chil-dren develop good posture and confidence. At-tending dance class is also great for developing friendships and increasing social skills. Dance involves using both sides of your brain; one side for technique and control, and the other for cre-ativity and artistry. Therefore, dance can increase brain productivity and increase attention spans. Most parents bring their children to dance stu-dios because their kids like to dance, some bring their children in to overcome shyness, or for fo-cusing issues. It doesn’t matter why you bring them to a dance studio, your children will thank you for it.

Danceyour way to happiness

Picking a studio is an important part of your child’s success in dance. Not every studio is the right choice for everyone. Just because Suzy at-tends there does not mean it is the right fit for you and your child. All come to class for fun… some develop a love for dance and want to do it everyday, some wish to compete at what they love, some wish to dance just for one hour... but the basis of all is it makes them happy.

For the children who find they are talented and decide to attend full time for their age, it is very important they have this opportunity to increase their love, passion, and talent. A dancer is just like any athlete, the more they practice with an in-structor the better they become. It is nothing for a committed dancer to take classes 3 to 4 days a week for several hours at a time and some at-tend classes everyday. Whether it’s a full time passion or part time hobby, dance is beneficial to everyone that enjoys it!

Registration is going on now at all dance studios.

ElEctrical SafEty chEckliSt✔Call a qualified electrician or your landlord if you have: • Frequent problems with blowing fuses or tripping circuit breakers • A tingling feeling when you touch an appliance • Discolored or warm wall outlets • A burning or rubbery smell coming from an appliance • Flickering or dimming lights • Sparks from an outlet✔Cords should not be running across doorways or under carpets. If they are, have an electrician install more outlets.✔Check electrical cords to make sure the wiresare not damaged, cracked, or loose.✔Keep kids away from electric cords and outlets. Cords placed in the mouth can cause burns and objects stuck in a receptacle can cause shock, burns or electrocution.✔All receptacle outlets and switches need faceplates.✔Never put more than one plug in each receptacle. ✔Ground-fault circuit interrupters reduce the risk of shock by shutting off a circuit when it could be a shock hazard. Your home should have GFCIs in the kitchen, bathroom(s), laundry, basement, garage, and outdoors.✔Arc-fault circuit interrupters protect against fire by monitoring the electrical current in a circuit and shutting off the circuit when unintended arcingoccurs. AFCIs should be installed in your home. If not, have a professional electrician install them for you.

By Terri Schroeter Promoter of Positive Self-Esteem for ChildrenOk kids, parents, teachers, listen UP. We have approximately 81 days to be

bully proof by the time summer is over and school starts up again in August. Summer is a great time to work on how you handle a bully. Remember, almost everyone is a target for a bully. And know that it is not your fault if you are bul-lied. Summer camp is also a place for bullies. Bullies are just not lurking at school or in your neighborhood. I want you to know, without a doubt, that you are precious and DO NOT DESERVE to be bullied. The biggest key to a happy you is for you NOT TO BELIEVE anything a bully says about you, and to have self-confidence. Can you stop other people from believing lies? Probably not. But it’s what you believe that matters. I want you to think of 5 things you can do to be bully proof. I want you to write 5 things down in June, then another 5 things in July and another 5 in August. And I want you to say them out loud or practice them in the mirror. I will give you a couple of examples to get your started.1. stand tall and be brave. How do I do this? Look at the bully and tell them to stop it?2. don’t bully back. It’s not right and you could get hurt.3. preventing a run-In with a bully. If you know they are going to stick out their leg and trip you in the lunch room- walk another way to your seat.4. get a buddy (and be a buddy). Two is better than one if you’re trying to avoid being bullied.5. don’t show your feelings. Think of something you can do to distract yourself. Count in your head; spell a word backwards. Anything that works for you to keep your mind occupied until you are out of the situation and somewhere safe where you can show your feelings.

Okay, now it’s your turn.

BABAR THE CLASSIC SE-RIES: SEASON ONE

Rated G. On DVD 6/05. Ok for kids 3+. Reel Rat-ing: 4 out of 5 Reels.Inspired by the Jean de Brunhoff books in the 1930s, this 2-disc DVD finds Babar the elephant growing up, being crowned king of the elephants, marrying Celeste, and having kids. One of the best lessons Babar learns is that despite life’s challenges, great things are always possible – a philosophy with which every parent can identify.

JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLANDPG for some adventure action and brief mild language. On DVD/blu-ray 6/05. Ok for kids 8+. Reel Rating: 4 out of 5 Reels. www.themysteriousisland.comThis sequel to 2008’s Journey to the Center of the Earth finds Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) embarking on a mission to find his grandfather, whom he believes is living on the “mysterious is-land” featured in Jules Verne’s classic novel. It’s a great family movie that blends science into the story, doesn’t shirk on special effects, and pays homage to the original story. There are also nice family bonding moments, strong role models, and a fearless teenage girl (Vanessa Hudgens) who can take care of herself. You also get to see former pro wrestler Dwayne Johnson sing What a Wonderful World while accompanying himself on the ukulele.

BIG MIRACLEPG for language. On DVD/blu-ray 6/19. Ok for kids 8+. Reel Rating: 4 out of 5 Reels. www.ev-erybodyloveswhales.comI loved this whale movie so much and couldn’t wait for the DVD release. Based on the true-life book Freeing the Whales by Thomas Rose, the story takes place in 1988 in the tiny town of Barrow, Alaska. When news reporter Adam Carlson (John Krasinski) discovers a family of three gray whales trapped in the icy waters off shore, it isn’t long be-fore his ex-girlfriend (Drew Barrymore) and a bevy of reporters and environmentalists head north to help the whales reach open water. Fun, family-friendly and educational, both kids and grownups will find something to love about this movie.
