Kia Manawanui Pānui #18 / 23 rd November 2017 Kia ora koutou, dear Parents, Whānau, and Friends, Today and tomorrow I am attending a hui of the principals of the integrated Steiner Waldorf schools (the private schools Titirangi and Motueka are also invited). We meet quite regularly to discuss issues of nation-wide significance and plan ahead with regard to teacher training, relevant conferences etc. There is a lot of work being done at the national level, and I update you every now and then about the outcomes. The most recent one was, of course, the agreement with the ministry to expand our memorandum of understanding to encompass our relationship to national standards and the digital technologies curriculum, amongst other matters. National standards are, of course, off the table, so we envisage that there is work ahead to fully understand the implications in view of our own learning steps which we use to report against. Next year preparations for “Waldorf 100” will be gathering steam, globally, nation-wide and in each school. Our wonderful volunteers Theresa and Jakob have shown great initiative to get the “postcard project” going, and you can read more about that in the next newsletter. Next Friday our classes 4-7 will take part in the annual Kapa Haka Festival at Kapiti College. Please support this as much as you can, with transport and other assistance on the day. And, of course, do come along and support the tamariki through their performance. The ERO team who completed their review last week were very complimentary of how the children carried themselves during the mihi whakatau on Monday, and I agree. They practiced with enormous good- will and patience to ensure that they would get it right. On that note, the review went well and we are expecting the unconfirmed report in about three weeks. Kia ora koutou, dear Parents, Whānau, and Friends,

Today and tomorrow I am attending a hui of the principals of the integrated Steiner Waldorf schools (the private schools Titirangi and Motueka are also invited).

They practiced with enormous good-

This involves completing the 2 yellow forms and returning this to the office either in hardcopy or via email. Engaging in the Pledge process confirms your child’s enrolment in next year’s class.

Making your pledge is a vital step in the budgeting process for the Kapiti Waldorf Trust as they fund the school’s special character curriculum, and capital improvements for the school, kindergarten and playgroups.

Pledge packs were also emailed to you, so you will have a copy in your inbox if you need another. Extra hardcopies can also be picked up from the office. Rick Zwart

BoT Elections

The school mid-term Trustee Elections are being held in December, and we need you to get involved.

Our school is governed by a democratically selected group of people called the Board of Trustees. These trustees make important decisions about our school's strategic direction, student progress, management, school culture and more.

Being a trustee is an important and rewarding role. Parents, caregivers and people from the wider community can all be trustees. We're looking for a range of people with a variety of skills and experiences, who believe in making a positive difference to our

children’s learning.

You will receive a Nomination Form in the mail. If you are interested in standing for election or nominating someone you know, please return the completed nomination forms by 12 noon on Monday 4th December 2017.

Nomination forms are also available in te reo Maori. Please contact the Returning Officer, Tonia Goodwin-Fox, if these are required, on 021 223-4993 or email [email protected].

If the Returning Officer for our School receives nominations for more

than two parent representatives, voting occurs. Election Day is Monday 18th December 2017.

Make sure your vote counts – vote for the candidates who bring the best skills to the table. All parents of full-time students can and should vote in the elections. Look for your voting papers in your letterbox and post them or bring them into school by noon Monday 18th December 2017.

Message from Hetty

Tatou te whanau,

After teaching here at Te Rā for twelve years, I have decided to leave at the end of the year for new adventures to my life.

I have learned so much, grown and received such joy from all the children and families who have been in my kindergarten group. It is wonderful to see the children grow through school within the wider, caring, community.

I will be having a farewell picnic on Friday Dec 8th, with my present group of children and families. You are warmly welcome to join us from 5:30pm onwards in Queen Elizabeth Park, Paekakariki (straight down to the park and turn right). We will be at the Gum Tree!! Please bring kai to share. Wet weather option will be in the Paekakariki site kindergarten.

Here are some photos from the recent swarm which class 6 and others saw coalesce in the Manuka, behind the woodworking area. They are now in the hive, busily building new comb and working fast, as of Tuesday, when Paul Denford and I looked in on them. From Mark

Kāpiti Youth Orchestra auditions for 2018 Are coming up on 26th November, and we invite all young musicians in Kāpiti to join our exciting program. If you play an orchestral instrument and are between 9 - 19 years old KYO might just be what you’re looking for! An incredibly vibrant orchestra with a fantastic program that includes music camp,

collaborating in combined workshops with other youth orchestras, and the terrific experience of playing in our annual concert at Southwards auditorium. Joining the orchestra suddenly gives music students a real purpose and rewards all their individual practice. Throughout the year there are many opportunities to learn from peers and participate in focused tutorials including with professional members of the NZSO. Being part of KYO is an excellent way to broaden your experience, become a skilled and agile musician, and is a complimentary part to any musical education.

The date set for auditions is Sunday 26th November from 10am

to 2 or 3pm. You will be allocated an audition time and emailed further information about how to prepare and where to come, when we receive your registration. Chris our conductor will send out audition music on 16th Nov - yes that’s rather soon! So please do sign up ASAP to ensure you receive yours without delay.

SPREAD THE WORD! Please do pass this message on to anyone whom you think might be interested, traditionally most of our members first hear about us through their friends and music

teachers, and those of you who have already observed or experienced the thrills of playing in KYO are the very best people to pass the information and enthusiasm on.

This is what one Kāpiti music teacher says “Playing with an orchestra means you are part of something that is far greater than what you could ever do alone. It stretches your ability and confidence. It gives you incentive to practice. It makes you friends and leads to greater things. Playing an instrument without being in a group is like learning to swim without going in the water. KYO is a friendly and supportive orchestra and I strongly advise my students to be part of it.” Donna Eldridge, french horn teacher.

All information for 2018 members can be found by following this link to the form on our website >>>>>>>>>

REGISTER HERE https://kyomusic.nz/kyo-2016-application-form/

By the way - even if you are unable to make the 26th, please do still fill in the form and just add a note in the comment box at the end. If you need a specific time of day i.e morning or afternoon, you can also request this on the form. Time slots will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, so get in quick if you require something specific. The Registrations Form will remain open until the beginning of Term 1 but we really encourage you to register now and attend the auditions on 26th when we have an entire day booked out for this purpose.
