Rats on the rampage in western Burma
Khonumthung News
July 16, 2008
Rats multiplying after devouring bamboo flowersare attacking hillside farms and destroying crops
in Chin state in western Burma.
Since June this year, rats have been attacking
farms in our village. We sow paddy seeds in the
day and the rats eat them at night. The rodents
have not spared maize either. It is a problem we
are facing daily, a farmer in Falam Township,
northern Chin state complained.
The most affected villages are Weibula,Mualzawl, Thlawrzawm, Ralum and Kawlfang
in Falam Township.
Most of the farmers are frustrated and depressed while
dealing with the rats that have destroyed almost all the
crops such as paddy and maize in farms on hillsides.
The people in the five villages are in a hopeless situation
in terms of cultivation this year.
A farmer in Falam Township said The situation is now
out of control though the villagers kill around one
hundred rats a night.
The rats destroying crops in this areas follows the famine
like situation caused by rats in the other areas of Chin
state leaving the people staring at starvation.

According to the Chin Human Rights Organization,
there are no less than 100,000 Chin people who
are directly affected by shortage of food in Chin state.
The proliferation of rats is in the farms near densebamboo forests.
Meanwhile, the villagers have lambasted the Burmese
military regime in Chin state saying that the local
authorities had not adopted any measures to check
multiplication of rats. The regime turned a blind eye
to the grave problem that its people are facing but
have instead imposed restrictions on religious
organisations and other Non Governmental
Organisations which have been assisting with relief
materials in the affected areas.
Bamboo flowers bloom once in around 50 years
when the life cycle of the bamboo comes to an end.The flowers which the rats eat leads to increased
fertility in rats and they begin to multiply and eat crops
leading to a famine in Chin state.
Bamboos, which grow naturally along the Indo-
Burma border areas, started blooming in 2006.

Oversea Chins (Zanniat) help Mautam victims in Falam Township
Khonumthung News
July 23, 2008
The Chin community, particularly from the Zanniat
clan settled overseas recently provided monetary
assistance to victims of Mautam (famine from
bamboo flowering) in Falam Township in Chin state,
Burma.
So far, the Zanniat community in Norway sent Kyat800,000 to Falam Township in Chin state, Pu Sena,
adviser of the Zanniat Welfare Organization based
in Aizawl, capital of Mizoram state, northeast India
said.
Pu Sena added that Zanniat communities in USA,
Canada and Australia are also collecting funds for
the victims of Mautam in Falam Township.
Last month, rodents multiplying after eating bambooflowers, destroyed paddy and maize in farmlands
located in Webula, Mualzawl, Zahtual, Tlawrzam,
Zalang, Ralum, Kawlfang villages in Falam Township
making the shortage of food for villagers worse.
Bamboos flower every 50 years when its life cycle
comes to an end. The flowers are eaten by rats whose
fertility increases leading to multiplication in large
numbers.
The rats then invade crops in farmlands and storehouses causing shortage of food and consequent
famine. This phenomenon is true for both Chin state
in Burma and the contiguous Mizroam state in India.
Most villagers from the rodent infested villages in
Falam Township belong to the Zanniat clan.
Meanwhile the Chin Famine Emergency Relief
Committee (CFERC) said that it will provide Kyat
400,000 to the victims of famine in FalamTownship.-Khonumthung.
Burmese junta turns blind eye to food crisis in Chin state: WLC
Khonumthung News
July 25, 2008
The Burmese regime was lambasted today for its
callousness in solving the current food crisis faced
by the people of Chin state in Burma by the Womens
League of Chinland, an umbrella group of different
Chin womens organizations in exile.
The WLC strongly condemns the State Peace and
Development Council (SPDC) for its failure to
prevent the disaster, provide assistance and improve
the overall livelihood of the victims of this crisis, a
WLCs statement released today said.

parts of the pigs and hand over the rest to the
owners, a villager whose
domestic animal was killed by
soldiers said on condition of
anonymity.
The villagers believe that the
killing of domestic animals in
Darling is directly related to the
soured relations between military
camp commander and village
council members after a majority
of villagers from Darling rejected
the Burmese regimes
constitution in the referendum onMay 10.
Earlier killing of livestock by soldiers was rare in
the village but now slaughtering of pigs is taking place
almost daily after the referendum, another villager
said.Similarly, soldiers were also said to have killed
several Mithuns (buffalo type animal traditionally
raised for domestic consumption) in Phaneng village
around four miles from Matupi Township.
We dont know what to do
and are at a loss. There is
nobody or no organizationto stop them from
slaughtering our live stock,
a villager complained.
There are reports from
individuals and organizations
from inside and outside Chin
state that the Burmese
regime had not only turned
a blind eye to the plight ofits citizens struggling from
shortage of food from Muatam - famine caused by
bamboo flowering but added to their woes by
extorting money from the villagers, engaging them in
forced labour for tea and jatropha plantations in
Muatam affected areas and killing villagers livestock.

Price of charcoal hiked in Chin state
Khonumthung NewsJuly 10, 2008
Increased taxation on coal has doubled the price of
charcoal in the local market in Chin state in Burma
from early this month.
Since the forest department
increased charges on
charcoal, the price was raised
by local coal sellers, acharcoal seller in Falam town
in northern Chin state said.
The price of charcoal has
soared from Kyat 10,000
(around US dollar 8) to Kyat
20,000 (US dollar 17) per bag (100 kilograms a
bag) in Falam town in Chin state following the levy
collected by the forest department.
The forest department in Falam town is said to have
increased tax on charcoal to Kyat 120,000 (US
dollar 100) from Kyat 50,000 (US dollar 42).
The quantum of forest duty proposed to be allocated
to Central Forest Ministry this year is higher than
before. There is a drive on to collect increased taxes
on coal and other forest products, according to an
official from the forest
department in Chin state.
The price hike in charcoal has
affected local business and
public services in Falam town.
The price hike on charcoal has
also affected the life of the
people here as most
restaurants, teashops, hospitals
and other public offices use charcoal as fuel for
cooking and other things, he said.
In Chin state, most people still rely on wood and
charcoal as alternative fuel for domestic use becausepower supply in these areas is insufficient.

wards of Falam Town were told to clean the bushes
in the tea gardens spread over an area of 100 acres.
From the very
inception of theplantation, we
had sowed the
seeds and
cleaned the
shrubs. The
people silently
do what is
asked of them as
they dare not
defy the order,
a local in Falam
Town said.
Some of the
employees were said to have paid the sum the regime
demanded for being absent.
A school teacher in Falam Town also said, I would
rather give them money than work in the plantation
as I have to attend school regularly.
It is learnt that only onethird of the government
employees among about 1,000 working in offices
in Falam Town are
likely to go to the tea
plantation for the
clean up drive, aschool teacher
added.
According to a
government report
in early 2008, tea
planted in Chin state
had covered around
14,188 acres in
2007 after theregime introduced
its tea plantation
project in Chin state
in 2001.
A forest fire broke out in Falam Town last year and
destroyed around one hundred acres of 2,242 acres
of tea gardens nurtured by forced labor in Falam
Township. But there is no report of re-cultivation of
tea in the damaged plantation. KNG.

Mizoram police arrests Burmese arms dealer
Khonumthung News
July 1, 2008
The Mizoram police arrested a Burmese arms dealer
on Saturday for alleged links with Northeast armed
groups in India. Arms and ammunition were seized
from him.
On June 28, the Mizoram police led by the Criminal
Investigation Department (CID) raided the home of
the suspect, Lalliana from Burma staying in Sairang
village near Aizawl capital of Mizoram state.
The police seized 19 Chinese made AK-47 assaultrifles and 12 magazines from him, Vanglaini, a local
newspaper in Mizoram said.
The seized weapons were meant for sale to two
Northeast armed groups called Bru Liberation Front
of Mizoram (BLFM) and Dema Halam Deoga
(DHD).
Mizoram police launched a raid searching for
weapons in Lallianas home after CID arrested 8
members of the BLFM and DHD in Aizawl on June
25.
The current price of a Chinese made AK-47 rifle is
over Rs. 300,000 and one bullet costs Rs. 150 in
the black market in northeast India, according to
the local newspaper.
The price of seized weapons from Lalliana will be
around Rs.80, 90, 000. Khonumthung.

The price of goods from Burma rise in northeast India
Khonumthung News
July 18, 2008
The cost of Burmese goods selling in Mizoram state,
northeast India is gradually spiraling, following a
deadlock in trade activities on the Indo-Burma
border trade No (2) road link from Mizoram state
to central Burma through Chin state.
Trade activities on the Indo-Burma Border Trade
Road No (2) have ground to a halt since the
transportation fee charged for goods coming into
Mizoram state from Burma was increased early last
month.
Actually, the fees went up slowly with the trade
between Burma and Mizoram coming down, a local
from Aizawl, capital of Mizoram said. .
In Aizawl market, the price of Fuji brand soap
powder imported from Burma increased to Rs.28
per 500 gm packet from Rs. 25 last month. Cost of
other accessories also went up from Rs. 3 to Rs. 5.
.
The price will not stabilize, it is likely to go up
further, a local from Aizawl also added. .
Mizoram state depends on essential commodities
from Assam state in India and especially Burma. .
Burmese traders had suspended the despatch of
goods from Burma into Mizoram state following the
doubling of transportation fees for Burmese traders
in Mizoram. .
It is unlikely that trade activities from Burma to
Mizoram will be resumed soon as there is no sign of
rolling back the hike in transportation fees by local
authorities. .
The price can be restored to what prevailed if the
authorities roll back the extra transportation fee.
Otherwise the prices will keep going up, a trader
from Champhai district said. .
The transportation fee was increased from Rs.1.50
to Rs. 3 per kilogram after a new cargo station was
set up in Melbuk near Champhai district. The hikein charges seems to have hurt the business of
Burmese traders and left them without much profit.
.
Earlier, there was only one cargo station in
Zokhawthar village in Champhai district near the
Indo-Burma border. The transportation charge was
then Rs. 1.50 a kilogram. Khonumthung. .

We dont have authority to close Indo-Burma border trade road: CNF
Khonumthung News
July 24, 2008
The Chin National Front, a Chin rebel group today
said that it had not issued any order to shut down
the Indo-Burma border trade road No (2). It,
however asked Burmese traders not to trade until
there is a roll back in the hike on transportation fees
in Mizoram state, northeast India.
We, the CNF do not have the authority to close
the Indo-Burma border trade road, Pu Thet Ni,
CNFs spokeperson said.
We only told the traders from Burma that it will bebetter not to go in for trade between Burma and
India because of the increased charges in
transportation fees in Mizoram, he added.
Along with the request to the Burmese traders, the
CNF is trying to negotiate with the Zokhuathar
Welfare Association and Champhai Trade Union in
order to bring down the transportation fee, which
has increased from Rs.1.50 per kilogram to Rs. 3.
So far CNFs efforts have not succeeded, according
to CNFs spokesperson. Finally, the CNF askedthe traders from Burma to wait for the charges to
come down and not to continue with trade activities.
Most of the traders from Burma who do business
along the Indo-Burma Border Trade Road No (2))seem to have no objection to CNFs calling for a
halt to their business because of the high
transportation fee.
We agree with the advice of CNF not to trade
between Burma and Mizoram as there will be no
profit as long as the fee is high, a Burmese trader in
Mizoram said.
Trade activities on the Indo-Burma Border Trade
Road No (2) have been brought to a standstill, since
the transportation fee charged for goods coming into
Mizoram state from Burma was doubled early oflast month after a new cargo station was set up in
Melbuk near Champhai town in Mizoram state.
Earlier, there was only one cargo station in
Zokhawthar village in Champhai district near the
Indo-Burma border. The charge was Rs. 1.50 per
kilogram.
As a result, the prices of goods from Burma in the
markets of Mizoram state, has gradually risen.-

Sale of motorcycles go up in northwestern Burma
Khonumthung News
July 9, 2008
The sale of motorcycles has soared in Kalay Town,
Sagaing division in Burma after the military junta
announced granting of license to owners with
unlicensed two wheelers.
Most motorbikes imported to Kalay town in
northwestern Burma are manufactured in India and
China.
India made Pulsar motorcycles are the popular
choice of customers including those made in China,
a local in Kalay town said.
The authorities from Road Transport Corporation
(RTC) in Kalay Township are issuing license to
motorcycle owners without license after a ban of
almost five years as of 2003.
The RTC office in Kalay is charging Kyat 150,000
per motorbike for the license, according to locals inKalay.
Earlier, people were nervous riding motorcycles as
they did not have a license. Now they are relieved
because they will get a license, a Kalay local said.
Meanwhile, the price of Chinese motorcycle called
Kenbo 125 has increased to Kyat 800,000 from
around Kyat 600,000. India made Pulsar is available
at Kyat 2800,000, according to the motorbikecommissioner in Kalay.
India made motorcycles are mostly brought into
Kalay from Moreh -Tamu Road and Zokhawthar
Tedim Road. China made two wheelers mostly
come from the Sino-Burma border towns such as
Muse, Shweli via Mandalay, the second capital of
Burma. Khonumthung.
Chin University students to publish Magazine
Khonumthung News
July 24, 2008
The ninth issue of a Chin Magazine for the academic
year 2007-08 will be published on August. The effort
comes from Chin students from universities in
Rangoon, the former capital of Burma.
The main objective of publishing this magazine is
creating awareness on Chin culture and nationalism.
This time we will extensively include the issue of a
common language for Chin state, Yang Lian Mang,
editor-in charge of the Chin magazine said.
Former writers of the previous Chin magazine,
including a well known artist Salai Moe Yin Tea havealso contributed various articles for this years
magazine.
This years Chin magazine will be the latest
publication of Chin university students in Rangoon
after the annual publication was halted after the 1988
pro-democracy uprising in Burma.
However, because of limited finance, the print run
of the Chin magazine is unlikely to reach the targetnumber of copies.
Actually we planed to print more than 2000 copies
but the money we received as donation is still limited.
Therefore, the number of copies to be printed might
not be what we expected, Salai Tang Lian Sian
Pau, secretary of Chin students (Universities -
Rangoon).
It is also learnt that the Central Chin Culture and
Literature Committee made up of Chin university
students across Burma has pledged to publish this
years CCLC magazine. Khonumthung.
