Year 11 Students – Attendance During Term 6

This is a reminder of what you need to do to make sure your attendance is correctly registered during the exam weeks after half term. Please remember it is really important that we know when you are in school in case there is any kind of emergency and to make sure that you are safe.

1. All of your usual lessons will continue up to the day of your final exam in that subject.

2. As the term progresses, and your exam courses come to an end you will gain ‘free’ study lessons. You may use these in whatever way you feel will benefit you the most. For example you may:

Choose to go home to study for subjects which have not been completed yet

Organise to revise at a friend’s house who lives locally to the school (make sure you have your parents’ permission to do this)

Attend your usual classroom (which will be available for you to use) – but please note that your usual teacher may not be there

Arrange with a teacher for an additional revision session if they have a free period

3. If you leave the school site at any point during the school day, you must SIGN OUT WHEN YOU LEAVE, and SIGN BACK IN WHEN YOU RETURN to school. There will be a dedicated signing in / out point for Year 11 students in the DESIGN QUAD AREA. You should enter and leave the school site via the main school reception, being mindful of remaining quiet and considerate when moving around the school site during lesson times. The gate in Design is locked for most of the school day.

4. The only time you will not need to sign in to school is if you are in at 8.30am for a timetabled lesson or pre-exam revision session, as you will be registered as normal and so we will know you are in school.

5. Your attendance at timetabled lessons which have not yet had their final exam is compulsory. This is 16th

June for most students, 19th June for students taking Further Maths, and 20th June for students taking Graphic Products. This includes attendance at all pre-exam revision sessions. Please don’t jeopardise your place on the Thorpe Park trip and / or Prom place through any lack of attendance over these next couple of weeks.

If you have any questions, please ask; meanwhile work hard, do well and make yourself proud. Mr Locke Deputy Head

Year 10 English English Department on Twitter Year 10 pupils have all been given a copy of 2 revision booklets for Literature. They should also be bringing their class book/folder/Anthology home with them to revise from. Their books are packed with extracts and practice answers, which they should be rereading and using to revise. Please encourage them to use their books and revision booklets in preparation for the first exam which is on Monday 22nd May. They could:

Learn quotations – please help to test them

Teach you the story/messages of the texts

Write out quotations on stick notes and put somewhere they look every day (the mirror is popular)

Plan answers to as many questions as they can, including which quotations and context information they would use

Write answers to the questions

Create their own questions and plan answers

Use CGP revision guides and answer knowledge questions in there.

Their class teachers are more than happy to look over any plans or practice responses they might do. Year 10 will also be sent home with specific homework from their teacher this weekend – please ask them about it, and encourage them to complete it. There are still revision sessions running after school Tues, Wed and Thursday next week – please remind your child to try and attend at least one. Year 11 French Dear Parent/Guardian, Thank you for the continued support of your son/daughter so far in his/her GCSE French course. We’re writing to you to update you on where your son/daughter is in terms of the course and what you can do at home to help support their revision. They have now completed the speaking and writing assessments, which will be sent off for marking by the examiners in May. On Tuesday 16th May, they have their French reading and listening exams which they are currently preparing for in class. The key to success in these exams is vocabulary and reading and listening skills. So, here are a few websites that you can encourage them to use and a few ideas to help them learn and retain the vocabulary:

http://www.1jour1actu.com/ - This is a French website for school children and has lots of articles and videos in French. Picking out key words and trying to piece together meaning with them is a good way to use this website.

VocabExpress - this is a website/app that all students have used and know well. It is specifically for the GCSE exam and encouraging your child to do 5 minutes a day will really help them develop their vocabulary.

www.languagesonline.co.uk – A great website for grammar and tenses practice.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/french/mockexam/ - BBC bitesize has some great reading and listening exercises on it, as well as French mock exams.

After school GCSE revision sessions- every Thursday 3-4pm in the MFL Department.

Their books! They have so much vocabulary in their books: highlighting words they find difficult to remember and making posters; mindmaps; cue cards; quizzes. They could even teach you!

The key to languages is little and often, so please do encourage your child to do little bits every day instead of hours at a time. They will retain it better and, if they start now, will not be as stressed out. Please do get in touch with any member of the MFL team if you have any questions or concerns about the exam. Bonne chance! Kind regards, The Kingdown MFL Department

Year 11 Revision Planning All Year 11 students met last week with their tutor and Mr Locke to discuss their approaches to revision. In this session:

We discussed ‘how much’ revision to complete – as a guide, a minimum of 10 hours per exam was suggested

Students added up the number of exams they are facing this summer, and when these take place

We started to complete each student’s revision planner (also attached for reference), which will include: o Dates of exams o Dates of revision sessions which students will be attending o Days on which different revision activities are planned

Students also received their revision pack – containing exam essentials (pen, pencil, ruler, rubber, sharpener, protractor and highlighter pen), lists of revision sessions over the coming weeks, revision tips (including specific examples for English, Maths and Science), and a good luck card from their tutor group.

Revision planners should be coming home in the next couple of days – it would be ideal if this could be displayed somewhere prominent in your home e.g. stuck on the fridge – and that days are crossed off as the activities are completed. There is a copy of the revision planner on the next two pages. Please do get in touch if you have any further questions over the coming weeks. Mr Locke
