SOCIAL NETWORKING & USE OF ONLINE SOCIAL NETWORK SITES TO INCLUDE FACEBOOK

The school continues to receive feedback regarding the use of social network sites by students at home. Inappropriate

behaviours on-line may directly impact on student behaviour and their social interactions at school. Teachers regularly

remind students about the importance of appropriate use and the dangers of cyber-bullying. We advise parents to be

vigilant in monitoring the use of online social network sites by their children.

Clearly the use of Kik, FACEBOOK and Instagram by children can be a concerning issue for families and schools.

We would strongly encourage families to continue to carefully monitor their child’s access to these platforms in

particular.

CYBERSMART ACMA reminders and responsible SOCIAL MEDIA use Schools educate children using a richly layered curriculum. They help explore contemporary themes that students face

as they navigate their way through a rapidly changing technological environment. Issues such as cyberbullying, digital

reputation and personal responsibility are crucial (for older students in particular) to understand when interacting on

digital platforms. The Australian Communications Media’s overview of some of the top issues they are seeing in schools

around the country include -

MOBILE PHONES in classrooms may be a major issue for schools. It is important for schools to have policies on the use

of mobile phones by students and staff and clear guidelines and procedures for breaches of policy.

INSTAGRAM is one of the most popular programs with primary students, despite the terms and conditions stating that

users must be 13 or above. Instagram and other photo-sharing sites allow users to locate someone from the geotagging

settings, that can be turned off on phones and on the Instagram site. Adding hashtags to your photos on Instagram

(example: #kitten) makes them visible to others using the same hashtags and makes it easier for others to find your

pictures and connect with you. Setting your profile to ‘private’ means photos won’t be visible on public tag pages.

MINECRAFT AND KIK (and a range of other messaging apps) have become very popular games and messaging platforms

for young children. Students have reported increased requests with strangers in these programs. Some primary

children who are playing in Skype report that they are often asked to turn on their webcam while playing Minecraft. The

legal age for the use of Kik is 17+.

EXCESSIVE GAMING. The impact of gaming into the late hours of throughout the night can mean young children

struggle to concentrate and focus at school. This is now a concerning issue with children playing games for lengthy

periods of time straight after school, and late into the evening on a week night.

For more information regarding cybersafety please visit http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/Parents.asp

GRACE MCKAY’s (6M) GENIUS HOUR PROJECT Grace McKay would appreciate donations of clean t-shirts, pants or sheets, so she can make them into dog toys. Grace

will sell the items at a dog park near her home. All money raised and any leftover dog toys will go to a puppy shelter, to

help sick, injured or homeless dogs. All donations will be appreciated by Friday 25th May. Thank you for your support.

SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORTS All schools prepare an Annual Report to inform parents and the wider school community of the school's successes,

activities and achievements throughout the year. The report also provides an opportunity to communicate and publicise

the longer-term directions for the school. A copy of the KPPS 2018 Annual Report will be available from the Office for

parents from June 1st.

ATHLETICS REPORT – Thursday 3rd May With a few set backs with students pulling out due to injury which left some big holes to fill, a massive effort goes to

the grade 3/4s for stepping up into the upper age events. The students gave their all on the day and represented the

school admirably. There were valiant efforts, great finishes and so many proud moments. We could not have asked

more of the kids and we are super proud of them all. What we learnt from the day is that we have work to do, but have

some extremely talented kids coming up who will keep Kent Park competitive and striving to do their best!

Below are the school results of the day -
