Welcome to Worship! In our Scripture for today, the newly minted believers are described as being “one in heart and mind” (4:32). They were so committed to God and to one another that “they shared everything they had.” They would sell their possessions and distribute the proceeds to others as they had need. One of those who sold a field and gave the proceeds to the apostles was a man they called Barnabas who would later become a co-missionary with Saul in the witness of the early church. Our Scripture begins with the generosity of Barnabas in the communal practice of the early Christians, and it ends with the encouragement shown to Saul by Barnabas. It was no one-and-done event for Barnabas. Encouragement is a way of life. In fact, it’s a calling. -Pastor Karl

PARENTS OF INFANTS AND PRESCHOOLERS
Welcome! Your children are welcome to join us in worship today. For parents who wish to use it, childcare is provided for infants and preschoolers in the church nursery and staffed by loving volunteers. When they are ready, we gladly welcome your children to all worship services. We understand in doing so we are fulfilling part of our promise to nurture these little ones in the faith. Children learn best by observing and participating. Parents can explain and model worship for their children when they bring them to worship. Thanks again for joining us in worship today. Prayer of Adoration
GIVE PRAISE AND THANKS TO GOD______________________________________________
*Hymn of Praise #129 “Be Still, for the Spirit of the Lord” Deacons will collect prayer requests
*Prayer of Confession Almighty God, you poured your Spirit upon gathered disciples creating bold tongues,
open ears, and a new community of faith. We confess that we hold back the force of your Spirit among us. We do not listen for your word of grace, speak the good news of your love, or live as a people made one in Christ. Have mercy on us, O God. Transform our timid lives by the power of your Holy Spirit, and fill us with a flaming desire to be your faithful people, doing your will for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
*Assurance of God’s Forgiveness
*Congregational Response Hymn #131 Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place; I can feel his mighty power and his grace. I can hear the brush of angels’ wings, I see glory on each face; surely the presence of the Lord is in this place. Time with the Children Anthem Joys and Concerns

are able to join us. The group will be hosted by Pastor Bob on Sundays that Pastor Karl is away.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Offering our Gifts to God *Doxology Hymn # 34

GOD’S WORD READ AND PROCLAIMED____________ __
Scripture Acts 4:36-37, 11:19-26 (p. 1094 & 1103) Sermon “Called to Encourage”
Go to www.kenmawrchurch.org for an audio or print copy of this sermon
*Hope in the Lord Jesus Christ Jesus Christ came to us as one of us, sharing our joy and sorrow. He proclaimed God’s love,
healed the sick, and was a friend of sinners. He continues to reveal God’s gracious love, he is among us now to make us whole, and he is still the friend of sinners.
Jesus Christ was and is one with us in life; Jesus Christ was and is one with us in suffering and death. The Lord and Savior is Christ crucified, in whom God’s weakness is stronger than human strength and God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom.
For the sake of the world, the Word became flesh. For the sake of the world Jesus Christ lived among us, was crucified and raised from the dead. For the sake of the world Christ ascended to heaven and for the sake of the world Christ will come again. Amen.
(A 2002 Presbyterian Church USA statement reaffirming the faith that has been imparted to us through the testimony of the great cloud of witnesses)
Today’s flowers are given: In loving memory of my wife Joan,
on our 63rd wedding anniversary
from John Gehr
