Methodology

The 2016 Kansas Population & Labor Force Demographics was compiled using U.S. Census

Bureau, American Community Survey (ACS) data downloaded from their American FactFinder

website on December 7, 2017. ACS five year estimates from 2012 – 2016 are used since that is

the data set that includes geographies of all sizes.

Please use caution when performing any longitudinal comparison of the labor force portion of

this report to reports generated prior to 2010, since the methodology has changed. Prior to

2010, the labor force statistics were derived from data collected during the most recent U.S.

Census along with data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) Local Area Unemployment

Statistics (LAUS). These two sets of data were used to estimate labor force data between the

decennial census. Due to the elimination of the “long form”, the Census Bureau did not collect

labor force data by race and gender in 2010, necessitating a change in methodology.

Also note that the sum of the all races percentages may not add up to the All Persons

percentages total due to rounding.
