Accessibility is about creating an environment that welcomes everyone. So what are some of the ways Kamloops works to create this welcoming environment?Recreation: The City of Kamloops has adapted yoga, zumba, hockey, floor hockey, and swimming to engage all resident. Visit page 13 for program details. For people who wants to participate in typical programming but need some support, City staff are partners in finding solutions. The ARCH program (page 6) helps with cost of accessing City of Kamloops programs and facilities.

Volunteer and non profit organizations like Kamloops Adapted Sports Association, YMCA, People In Motion, and Adapted Sports at Sun Peaks deliver high quality programming for all abilities. Visit page 13 for contact information.

Planning and Development: City Council, City of Kamloops staff, and Kamloops businesses are always looking for ways to create a more exclusive city - curb cuts, audible traffic signals, designed parking stalls, access ramps, universal washrooms, change room fitted with equiment to support different needs, accessible parks and playground, handrails, and benches.

The Mayor’s Advisory Committee for Persons with Disabilities help inform City Council and staff decisions on accessibility issues. Ground members represent all sectors, including: School District, Interior Health, mental health, employment, transportation, and residents, including seniors.

A 1% increase in literacy levels would raise Canada’s productivity by 2.5%, and estimated $32 billion boost to our annual GDP. Decoda Literacy Solutions: www.decoda.ca

Literacy Matters for Families

Literacy is important for all of us, no matter how old or young we are. Literacy helps us participate fully in family, work and community. Literacy is the ability to read, write and do mathematics, but it is also about problem solving, decision making, technology and social skills. The more literate we become, the better we understand our world.

Be curious by welcoming different experiences and finding subjects and topics fascinating to yourself and your children.

www.literacyinkamloops.ca

Fun activities to encourage literacy

• Playing board games together as a family promotes social skills, reading and rules for fair play

• Build a Lego structure. This activity involves colours, counting, shapes, and lots of creativity

• Play eye spy while hiking or playing at the park • Read a book to your child as part of your bedtime

routine• Make a game out of sorting laundry; separate

colours and types of clothes

FamilyStaying Home this Winter If you’re staying home during the holiday season, fight cabin fever and boredom while having fun and developing movement skills with the entire family.

Here are five ideas to get you started.

1. Rock climbing or bouldering. Instead of climbing the walls at home get out and try Cliffside Climbing Gym.

2. Bowling. Kids love the shoes and the pop soundtrack most bowling alleys play these days and parents will love reliving their youth and creating family memories.

3. Snowshoeing. Rent some snowshoes and poles and hit the local park.

4. Five senses walk. Bundle up and enjoy all the sights and sounds that winter offers.

5. Swimming. Check the Canada Games Pool for family swim times.

What are the magic words? Please and thank you of course! In the generation of texting, emails and social media we have less face-to-face interaction so

these words are more important than ever.

Please and thank you are not just about being polite, but about providing each other with the capacity to express respect, gratitude and kindness. Using these words at home will help children

and youth at school, and in the community.

Magic Words

Perhaps the hardest change for most people is focusing on your own activity and role-modeling

a healthy lifestyle for your child; however, it is essential. Prioritize your own well-being because you deserve it and your children need to see you taking care of yourself.

That’s how they’ll learn how to take care of themselves.

Unstructured Play

We know that both structured activities and free play are essential for kids’ development. But times have changed and for so many of us, with both parents working, there is often no other option but to program children to exhaustion.

How can we make sure that our kids get their unstructured time and as parents we don’t over program?

Here are some suggestions:

• Make frequent outings to the playground and create a special theme for the trip

• Build a snow fort at the park• Visit farms, forests, and ravines where kids

can explore and be in nature • Choose a program that values free play,

discovery and creative time for kids• Include lots of downtime in the evenings and

on weekends

Random Acts of KindnessBeing kind is an active way of bringing meaning to our own lives, as well as the lives of others. Being kind allows us to improve our communication, to be more compassionate, and to be a positive force in people’s lives.

Ways to share your kindness every day • Smile. Smiling is easy and happiness is contagious!• Help around the house without being asked to do so, such

as cleaning your room, taking out the garbage or helping with the laundry.

• Hold the door open for those behind you.• Offer to take your neighbor’s dog for a walk or shovel

their sidewalk.• Volunteer to be a tutor or mentor in a school, especially

if there is an area in which you can help another student.• Write a note to your parent(s) or grandparent(s) and tell

them why they are special to you.• Give someone a compliment at least once every day.• Color a picture, make a craft or send a treat to a senior

center or nursing home.• Donate your unwanted toys and books to the children in

need.• Write a thank you note to your teacher, your coach, your

mentor or someone who has influenced you in a positive way.

• Clean up the area around your school or a local park, picking up trash and putting it in the garbage can. You can also help your teacher clean up the classroom.

• Take time to read a storybook with a family member.

Unleash your super powers!Your teenage years are a great time to begin discovering your talents, interests and your passion. When we start to discover who we are and what direction we want to take our life, we begin to discover the super powers within.

Dream big with SMART goals.

1. SMART - Specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely goals work best. Ensure your goals are specific and realistic. For example: “I’m going to recycle all my plastic bottles, soda cans, and magazines” is a much more doable goal than “I’m going to do more for the environment.”

2. It takes time for a change to become a habit. It takes time for habits to become a routine part of your life. Your brain needs time to get used to the idea that this new thing you’re doing is part of your regular routine.

3. Repeating a goal makes it stick. Write down your goal and say your goal out loud each morning. Every time you remind yourself of your goal, you’re training your brain to make it happen.

4. Pleasing other people doesn’t work. The key to making any change is to find the desire within yourself — you have to do it because you want it, not because a girlfriend, boyfriend, coach, parent, or someone else wants you to.

5. Roadblocks don’t mean failure. Slip-ups are actually part of the process as you retrain your brain into a new way of thinking. It may take a few tries to reach a goal but that’s okay — it’s normal to slip up or give up a few times. Just remind yourself to get back on track.

Did you know? A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that is caused by a blow to the head or body, a fall, or another injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull.

Facts:

• The brain is vulnerable if you have not recovered from a concussion.

• An improvement in symptoms such as headache and dizziness does not mean your brain has recovered.

• Safe and proper management of concussions is to ensure full recovery of the brain before allowing an athlete to return to play.

• Baseline testing of athletes prior to starting their sporting season will assess their physical and mental systems and is the safest way to return to play.

For more information on concussion management please contact:
