Kaleo O’ Waiākea
Aloha Students, Parents/Guardians of Waiākea Elementary School, We are nearing the end of our 1st quarter of school, time just flew by! Weʻ ve seen many great things taking place during the first quarter. Iʻ m very proud to inform all of you that we almost have an electronic device available for every student at Waiākea Elementary School. Students in grades 2 through 5 have access to a Chromebook to assist them in their learning. Students in grade 1 have a mixture of Chromebooks and laptops to assist them in their learning. Students in Kindergarten have access to iPads to assist them in their learning, we just need a few more iPads to achieve a 1:1 ratio in Kindergarten. We’ve seen a successful STEM parent night, with a lot of eager and excited students. We are getting ready for our second parent night around technology. We are also planning a third parent night around Literacy. Hope to see all of you there. Our Response to Intervention block is in full stride. This block of time is used specifically to support the learning and behavior needs of all students. Struggling learners are provided with interventions at increasing levels of intensity to accelerate their

Student Council News
Another way to keep abreast of what is going on at Waiakea Elementary School is by attending our School Community Council meetings.
Our next board meeting will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2016 beginning at 4:45pm in Bldg. C conference room. All are welcome to attend and listen. This is a
meeting attended by representatives of all stakeholders of our school – administration, teachers, staff, students, parents and
community.
The first Community meeting will be held on Thursday, November 17,
2016 beginning at 5:00pm.
Our Student Council is busy with many activities and projects on their calendar.
On September 21, they joined our K-Kid’s club members for a fun Leadership Camp. The Waiakea High School Key Club led our students through some team building activities. Our students discussed and learned about the
difference in a ‘leader’ and a ‘boss’. It is our hope that we are developing future leaders who will lead their fellow classmates, community and country.
Our next big activity is “Character Dress Up Day” at the end of this month. Students will be receiving information after the fall break.

On Saturday morning, September 22 a group of American Savings Bank volunteers came to brighten our campus. Their “Seeds of Service” project was the repainting of our well-worn hopscotches near the kindergarten playground and walkway. They tapped into their inner child to make these hopscotches fun! We hope that our kindergarteners and others will

enjoy the “old fashion” joy of hopscotching during their recess time. Many adults may remember a time when this was the best thing to do during our recesses.
Thanks again to Lianne Sato and her wonderful crew from Prince Kuhio Plaza and the downtown branches for their enthusiasm and hard work.
Aloha, American Savings Bank!
As a parent it is your responsibility to say “no” if it’s necessary. But sometimes it feels like you’re rejecting your child, not ust his request. Here are some ideas to make it easier:
1. Children count on you to say “no”. It gives them a sense of relief to know their boundaries.
2. Don’t give your answer immediately. Give yourself time to think about the request.
Five Ways Parents Can Say ‘No’ Without Feeling Guilty
3. Ask questions to make an informed decision. Ask your child why he wants to do this. Is there another option?
4. Get another opinion. This may be a decision you don’t want to make on your own. Talk with other parents first.
5. Make your decision, and then make it work! There may not be an absolute “right” or “wrong” answer. Just do your best.
If you are an individual with a disability, please contact the following personnel to make arrangements for reasonable modifications and accessibility to school events at least 10 days in advance to the event you wish to attend. Reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate your request. For Waiakea Elementary School events, please contact Ken Watanabe, Principal 981-7215 ext. 225 or Todd Yanagi, V.P : 981-7215 Ext. 226 or via relay
