Hi! I’m Joanna. My kids call me TJ. Since I was a child,

I have dreamed of having my own kindergarten.

I love children. I love playing with them…

learning with them…and growing with them.

Year 2007.

Republic of South Korea, Seoul City.

Just when I thought my dream would remain as it was, the biggest break of my life fell in and I threw myself into it.

I flew to South Korea and took my chance as a foreign teacher. I taught the English language to Korean children. I worked in a posh English Yuchiwon.

And there, I gave my dream a second chance and configured it. I told myself, I could have my own English Academy when I get back home.

As a child, I learned the wonders of dreaming, of making a wish upon a star, of winning. As I grew up, I was slowly losing all that it takes to be a winner. I suddenly turned into a weakling, someone who easily gets affected by the partiality and unkindness of the world. I knew I had my faculties, but I really did not believe that I have them. I lost my family’s trust. I lost myself in the process.

God is good. All the time, He’s been good. And He gave me another rope to hold on to. That was when my husband and I flew to South Korea.

South Korea had been a very good teacher to me. It had taught me a lot of things, a lot of virtues. I have learned to keep my feet on the ground while taking big steps. I have built my own edifice and tried to make it solid. I have learned to live on my dreams and make them come true… that it is never too late if I really want to make a big difference in my hometown.

Seoul had been good to me. I enjoyed every minute in that amazing city.

KAIROS ENGLISH

June 2012. Home Sweet Home.

It was midnight when my husband and I landed at

Terminal 1. A surge of hot air greeted me and it finally came to my senses that I was indeed at the land of my birth. I was happy. No, I was more than happy for at long last, I can

give my son a big hug and a big kiss. How I missed him so

much!

Beyond that, excitement filled my heart as I told myself that

“now” has finally come to prove myself worthy of God’s grace.

And Kairos English was born.

For Level 1, my first students were my two nephews, and my husband’s youngest cousin. For Level 2, I had my son, my niece, and the grandson of our neighbor. For Level 3 (higher elementary), I had my cousin and his two friends. The class runs for two hours. Tough start, 80% charity, whew! But I am happy! Never in my life had I felt “useful”. Motherhood serves me right but teaching children makes my life more worthwhile and sensible.

I can say that my students and I are having a grand time together. Aside from the regular English class, I also give them simple art lessons for diversion. We have mask-making, clay art, and some painting activities. Other times, I treat my older students to nearby resorts or restos and talk over current events or something to enhance critical thinking and fluency. Snacks, school materials, worksheets, and ride are also provided.

Why KAIROS?A lot of people are wondering what KAIROS

means. When I was in Seoul and found nothing to do after work, I held my Bible and opened it unintentionally in Mark 1:15. It said, “Kairos has come. “ I got curious about the word Kairos and thought it referred to someone. Then, I found out that Kairos is a Greek word for substantial time, the supreme moment, the appointed time in the purpose of God. When I started Kairos English, I felt that my time has come to share my talents, to nourish children with my loving touch, and to provide foundation for growing kids.

And I am thankful that the parents of my kids continue to trust and believe in my capability to guide and take care of their children on weekends.
