The owner of the Parkview Motel has recently taken over management of the Dargaville Campervan Park and Cabins.

“The owner, Ray Paxton, was looking to pass the park on, and we agreed to a management deal,” said James.

“With 50 beds at the motel and 52 in the park I now have a foot in both camps, so to speak.

Over the last couple of years there has been a growing trend of people staying in campervan and camp accommodation, rather than motels. So I am now in a position that where Dad might be happy with the campground — but Mum would prefer a motel room, I can provide both options.”

He said the park and cabins are great, an awesome idea well thought out and maintained and his mission now is to implement a marketing campaign, which will include, instant online bookings, along with a smart phone and tablet friendly 0800 booking number.

Visitors are the target

The Maungaturoto Residents Association is setting out to help the Maungaturoto Community Centennial Hall with a Quiz Night fundraiser there on Saturday April 28 at 7pm.

Entry will be $10 per person with six per team.

“There will be a cash bar, raf es

and prizes for the winners,” said organiser, Nyree Alcock.

“The hall needs help with paying for the rates and all proceeds will go to saving the Centennial Hall,” she added.

To enter a team, contact Nyree on 09 431 8462.

“It comes too at a time when there is a move in the industry to undertake a new initiative to attract tourist traf c to the Kauri Coast.

There are a number of developments in the pipeline that we feel sure will culminate in a large increase in visitors numbers to the area.”

Maungaturtoto’s community services will get a nancial injection after the running of the second Carters Maungaturoto Golf Ambrose event at the Paparoa Golf Club last Saturday

The light-hearted annual tournament attracted 14 teams of four players, with the stipulation each team had to include one women, and appropriate — preferably fanciful — headgear was also in order.

“The weather gave us a little concern,” said organiser, Josh Monk, “but we struggled through after the 11am shotgun start and players made it through the refreshments and the sauage sizzle on course.”

At the end of the day, there were prizes galore from Carters suppliers’ merchants, with other support from the Maungaturoto Hotel.

Gol ng for giving

A re in the early hours of Monday morning destroyed the former Paparoa Bowling Club rooms adjacent to the showgrounds on the main road through the town.

The building was being used as a community education centre. It’s thought

the re was deliberately lit, and the police have been informed.

The Fire Risk Management of cer for the Whangarei and Kaipara area, Craig Bain, is seen here sifting through debri to try and determine the cause of the blaze.

“It’s just devastating, said one of a number of locals looking on from behind Fire Service tape.

“The kids around here were getting a great deal out of the centre. I can’t see how it could be replaced, just looking at the damage.”

The proceeds from the $40 per team entry will be shared between the local St John Ambulance depot, the town re party, and the Linking Hands medical shuttle service.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days

— truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

All seemed to be going to plan for skipper Captain John Pearson leaving Kaipara Harbour late on a March afternoon in 1899. With his wife and children on board, his 200 tons three-masted barquentine Cuthona was outward bound to deliver 158,000 feet of kauri timber to Sydney.

Anchored off Pouto Point they waited for the signal to sail. At three o’clock permission came and at four they were under way. The breeze was steady from the northeast, the pilot station was passed at ve and the lighthouse at 6pm.

But their speed dropped to four knots

a little later and at seven o’clock things started to go seriously wrong. The fresh wind died away to leave them stuck between North Spit and Tory Shoal. Crew broke out the lead line to check the depth of water that showed fourteen fathoms but quickly dropped to twelve and then eleven. At the inquiry Pearson told how he then gave the order to let go the anchor.

“Before the order could be carried out, a breeze sprang up off the land so I countermanded the order. I was then heading towards North Spit but the wind was favourable so we set sails again to continue the voyage. No sooner were

Story of a shipwreck by Brian Eastwood

the sails set than the wind dropped to light. We were too close to let go the anchor so I tried to sail off. She held her own for some time but gradually we were carried sideways. She then struck and swung around onto the bank about a quarter of a mile from the end of the Spit.” Pearson told how Cuthona leaned over to seaward with seas breaking over her.

Her hull on the port side was smashed, the forecastle and rigging gone and one mast had rammed through the bottom of the hull. The crew of eight and the skipper with his family still in their night clothes, got off in a lifeboat. Then came the long walk to Pouto lighthouse where they arrived at two o’clock in the morning.

Harbour tugs Sterling and Pilot

attempted next day to drag her off, but it was hopeless.

Cuthona was built in Scotland in 1878 of oak and copper fastened. She had been trading on the usual routes, bringing coal from Newcastle to New Zealand and back loading with kauri from Kaipara.

It seemed that there was an element of luck as well as ability needed for sailing in and out of Kaipara Heads. Earlier on that same evening when Cuthona struck North Spit another ship, Isabella Anderson, had easily sailed out, prompting the pilot station to give the ‘sail now’ signal to Cuthona.

The Kaipara graveyard had claimed yet another victim but Captain Pearson and his crew were considered blameless and their certi cates returned to them.

For those with a lot of laundry to get through in a week the cost of water, electricity and laundry detergent can soon mount up. That’s why it was intriguing to discover a new method of washing laundry which uses no harsh chemicals and even gets rid of the need for a rinse cycle.

Available at McKay’s 100% in Dargaville and 100% Fergus Appliances in Maungaturoto, this set of two large soft ball-sized plastic balls made the bold claim of being able to wash a full 8.5 kgs of dirty laundry without liquid or powder — so we put them to the test.

The results were stunning. Over six large loads of washing the eco wash balls performed exactly as advertised, leaving clothes and linen with no odour, no gritty powder residue and, most importantly, absolutely clean. All this from a cold wash with no rinse cycle — the beauty of

the concept is that there is no residue to rinse away.

Perfect for those with allergies to detergents (no harsh chemicals at all to get trapped in the fabric), this innovation is also great for those with septic tank systems — there’s no harmful post-wash ‘grey water’ to contaminate the tank.

With the capacity to run over 1000 washes on a single set, the eco wash balls alsocome with a stain remover and two tumble dryer balls which reduce dryer time and savepower.

And as the system comes with a money-back guarantee, it’s well worth your time to give them a test-spin. Skeptics will be more than impressed as this product delivers exactly what it promises — an environmentally friendly, non-toxic wash that saves money, water and time.

in-a-lifetime chance to catch Mark Williams of Dragon with Tama Lundon and Dil Karaka, founding members of reggae pioneers Herbs. They’re bringing a stripped-down, more intimate and raw acoustic experience this time around, and they’re also bringing support in the form of Maungaturoto band Localize.

Mark Williams should need no introduction — his classic songs (like the anthemic ‘Show No Mercy’) are radio favourites and part of the soundtrack to Kiwi life. The Dargaville local is returning to his roots for a concert at the Town Hall on April 28, and he’s bringing some friends along as well.

Herbs are known as the ‘godfathers of Kiwi reggae’, and over the years they’ve become a real part of our history — inspiring a whole crop of modern bands and musicians as well as becoming political heroes for their stance on nuclear testing in the Paci c. Their laid-back sound and soulful lyrics are intertwined with our sense of Kiwi identity, and the unplugged set planned by Herbs as they support Mark Williams

Stay with us and enjoy a great night out without the long drive home...

It’s even rarer for two such icons of Kiwi culture to hit the road together — let alone head up to the Kaipara for a show in Dargaville. But that’s just what’s on its way this April — a once-

is sure to be one to remember — especially as Tama and Dil might just get together with Mark on a track or two for the rst time ever.

As if putting three classic Kiwi artists on one stage wasn’t enough, there’s more — up-and-coming local group Localize will rock the town hall along with these two headline acts, making this a

very different but totally engaging show from Dragon and Herbs’ gig at Turiwiri Produce last year.

So, a triple-shot of great local music is on its way — an event which will be talked about in the Kaipara for years to come. Don’t miss this one, no matter what you do — it’s history in the making, and a great night out for only $25.

Soldier at the SommeOff to see the world and take part in

what most thought would just be a great adventure, Corporal Ernest Heatley, son of G. Heatley of Te Kopuru, boarded a troopship in Wellington that was to take him to the Middle East. Some of his unit, the 6th reinforcements, embarked on SS Tofua and some boarded S.S. Willochra.

They sailed on 14th August 1915, arriving exactly one month later at Port

Duty Nobly Done by Brian Eastwood

A 1st World War German 7.5mm field gun over looks the river in TeKopuru. It has been restored by former soldier Jim Te Tuhi.

Hanging on the wall in St Peters Anglican Church in Te Kopuru is a memorial plaque remembering two soldiers who served in World War One and an airman who served in the Second World War. They were three lads who left Kaipara, never to come home again. Each has some of their wider family still living in Northern Wairoa

then by train up to Armentieres.A little more than one year after

leaving Te Kopuru, Ernest took part in the infamous rst battle of the Somme. It was 6.20 in the morning of 15th September when the Auckland and Otago Regiments led the attack on the German trenches.

For the rst time in history they were to be supported by a new invention, the military tank. In the event the tanks

were out of action, halted by mud and mechanical problems. On the second day the tanks did prove their worth when one nally caught up with the New Zealand troops.

Ernest had survived the horror of that rst day of battle but in the attack next day on the village of Fler he was listed as killed in action. It was 16th September 1916.

More than six hundred New Zealanders had been killed and fourteen hundred wounded for an advance of less than one kilometre.

The young man from Te Kopuru lies in Heath Cemetery at Harbonnieres, south of the main road between Amiens and St Quentin, France.

In at the StartThe Auckland Mounted Ri es was

absorbed into the regular army from a Territorial Force Unit when Britain declared war on Germany in August 1914. It was the start World War One. Although from Te Kopuru the son of E.M. Rope, Charles Manfred Rope had joined the Auckland Mounted Ri es

Suez, expecting to end their travels on Gallipoli. After some quick extra training in Egypt they were shipped over to the beaches of Anzac. But unexpectedly Gallipoli Peninsula was evacuated twelve weeks later on December 20th and Ernest’s unit was sent back to Egypt.

As an infantryman he was now in the Auckland Infantry Regiment that was needed on the Western Front. So in April 1916 they were off again, this time to the south coast of France arriving at Marseilles and

at Pukeatua, a town in the Waikato.

The Mounted Ri es were ready to go and became part of the rst body of troops to head overseas to Europe. They never got to France but were redirected to the Middle East and remained there until the war ended in 1918.

The newly formed unit embarked at Queen’s Wharf Auckland on September 22nd. Most men together with their horses went aboard SS Waimana with others sailing on Star of India. Both ships were sent back to Wellington because of German raiders in the Pacifi c but fi nally left on October 10th 1914.

It must have been exciting for a lad from Te Kopuru in 1914 to call at Hobart, Perth, Colombo, Aden, Alexandria and then just before Christmas, set up camp near Cairo.

For the next four months the Mounted Ri es trained to defend the Suez but in May 1915 they left their horses in Egypt and were shipped off to Gallipoli to ght as infantry.

Rope managed to go through unharmed until he was wounded on August 8th in the now famous New Zealand attack on Chunuk Bair.

Most members of New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the Middle East went off to Europe in April 1916 but the Mounted Ri es stayed in the Middle East to become part of an Anzac Mounted Division defending British interests against Turkish forces.

All still went well for Rope until January 1917 when he went into action against

Turkish defenders at the battle of Rafa in the Sinai Desert. The Mounted Ri es took the enemy position after a late afternoon bayonet charge.

But Te Kopuru boy, Charles Manfred Rope, died of his wounds there on January 9th.. He is buried in the Kantara War Memorial

Cemetery on the eastern side of the Suez Canal, 50 kilometres south of Port Said.

Against the OddsSpeed and excitement always

attracted Thomas George Bassett, a young man from a well-known Te Kopuru family.

Dargaville resident Wendy Rae still remembers the stories about her Uncle Tom. “He had a motor bike and went everywhere at top speed. There was a family story of how he managed to pass the Te Kopuru bus on the Kaihu Bridge by shooting up the pedestrian path.”

It was probably no surprise to his father John Bassett and mother Lena when he left his Union Bank job to join the Royal New Zealand Airforce for training at Wigram air eld and to go on to join the Royal Airforce in June 1938.

World War Two was declared in September 1939. Flying Offi cer Tom Bassett ew with 15 Squadron, one of the rst sent to France as part of the First Air Striking Force. Little happened until May 1940 when the squadron returned to England to be equipped with Bristol Blenheim bombers, a plane

that stacked the odds on the side of the German fi ghters. Operating from Wynton their task was to attack German columns that were over running Europe.

When German troops invaded Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg on 14th April 1940, Tom Bassett’s 15 Squadron ew their rst war mission. The target was Waalhaven airport near Amsterdam where paratroopers had landed. It was a success and all the planes returned although some had been hit.

On the May 12th they took off on a raid to destroy a bridge across Albert Canal near Maastricht, a city in Holland. Of the twelve planes that fl ew off from England, only six planes returned and they were all badly damaged.

Pilot Tom’s plane was shot down on just his second raid and crashed near the Albert Canal, a little south of the city.

Wendy Rae says: “After the war Tom’s sister Phyllis and her husband Dan

Savident visited Maastricht. They were well looked after by locals who said that they had seen the plane come down and took them to where it had crashed by the canal. They thought that the Germans had actually been waiting for them. Phyllis went back again in 1990.”

Thomas Bassett is buried in the Maastricht General Cemetery with other Airforce men and some local people. He shares a joint grave with a member of his crew, Leading Aircraftman William Cavanagh. Both boys were twenty- two years old.

With this in mind we asked two local hunters (both, coincidentally called Jason) for some top tips to make the season special.

Jason from McCoy and Thomas Hunting and Fishing reminds you to check your gear before the pre-dawn start on the 5th. A new shooter can be kitted out for less than $1,000, says Jason — less expense than many may expect, but even those with existing kit (guns, decoys, camo, calls etc) should give their gear the once over before it’s go time.

Friday the 4th is your last chance to do up that mai mai! Don’t forget your own creature comforts and plenty of camou age and decoys.

Set your alarm for Saturday the 5th — don’t oversleep! Most die-hard duck shooters will have been up all night anyhow, according to Jason.

Be licenced, sober and safe! Shooting without a licence carries big penalties, and remember to keep the beer in the cooler until after all the guns are packed away. Safety is paramount — check your targets and lines of re to avoid needless tragedy.

Don’t forget the dog! Pack food water and treats for your canine offside — they’re doing all the work retrieving your ducks.

Jason from Dargaville Kayaks says give kayak hunting a try! A good, stable Ocean Kayak’s vessel makes the perfect oating platform for shooting — it’s camo’ed up, silent and low to the waterline. You can lay up in the reeds and wait for the perfect shot, and you can even pick up your own ducks to give the dog a break.

It’s been a strong breeding season in the north, and whether you’re heading out to a mai mai, a stand of reeds or getting into the growing sport of kayak hunting there’s a whole lot of fun to be had this duck season. You can catch up with your mates and fellow hunters at Hunting and Fishing’s duck night on the 2nd, with $3,000 worth of prizes up for grabs too.

Then it’s time to wait for the sound of wings in the grey of dawn, the excitement building — and the satisfaction of a good day’s shooting that only a duck hunter can truly understand.

A new twist on duck shooting — a kayak hunter lines up his shot

Duck season of cially opens on May 5, but keen hunters are already into the swing of things, getting kitted out for the big day

“The prospects are good but as usual, success will depend on other factors including a hunter’s skills and the weather,” says Fish & Game Offi cer Nathan Burkepile.

“There’s been so much rain around that birds may be quite widely scattered with a number found in ooded paddocks, with fewer birds ying into ponds.

“Instead of sitting in a maimai, hunters need to be prepared to shift their position to say, beside a paddock under camou age netting. It’s a matter of relocating your hunting opportunities.”

Pheasant and quail populations remain healthy with the Northland Region providing some of the best upland game bird hunting in the country.

But Mr Burkepile points out that success on the day can’t be measured by the number of birds which are bagged. He says the opening is as much about “having fun with your mates and kids and enjoying the excitement

of the day, and taking part in a Kiwi tradition.”

He’s appealing to hunters who harvest any birds with bands to contact Fish & Game. “Please phone us with details of the bird, its band number and where it was taken.”

Hunters are reminded that rangers will be out in force over the weekend and will be checking licences, and if they’re found with lead shot — now banned within 200 metres of open water — it will be seized and prosecution will follow.

“Hunting without a licence is simply not worth the risk given substantial nes and the loss of your rearm,” he adds.

Plenty Birds — if hunters have the skillsNorthland Region Fish & Game says there are plenty of game birds around for the start of the hunting season this weekend — if the weather plays its part when the season opens on Saturday May 5

The Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes Kiwi Lodge at Matakohe has been around since the end of the Second World War, meeting in clubrooms on the site of the old Matakohe Hall, destroyed by re not long before.

Local farmer, Allan Swindlehurst, was one of those honoured with life membership, and said the lodge has long had a rm focus on charity works and giving.

“We recently gave a sum to the Relay for Life event, raising money for cancer research and over the years we have supported a wide range of community activities.”

The lodge in fact is part of an international movement believed to have been founded at a time during the 16th century when societies were frowned upon to the extent that membership could literally mean ‘losing your head’.

‘It is said that Queen Elizabeth I, being satis ed that we were not a threat to either the monarchy or society in general, presented us with a banner, which enabled us to meet without fear or favour, and to this day whenever a lodge meets, politics and religion may not be discussed,’ says a notice on the RAAOB website.

The life-members named at the weekend joined their fellows and family members in a traditional beverages and barbecue evening.

Lodgemen for lifeSixty-odd years of giving were celebrated at a Kaipara service and social club last weekend, as ve men became life members.

WOF SERVICING

9 Liverpool StreetDARGAVILLE

We appreciate your classics!

Classics, hotrods, V8s are our specialty. Rebuilds, panel, paint and parts for US and

European V8s.

The venue is Roy’s V8 Shop, a brand new automotive centre for Dargaville, and Roy and his team of mechanics, painters, technicians and all-round enthusiasts have one thing in common – a passion for beautiful old steel, sculpted into cars your dad (or granddad!) used to dream about driving. Keeping them looking great, sounding spectacular and running like the proverbial clockwork is what these guys do best.

While the glamourous show cars and wicked hotrods you’d expect at a place like this are a big reason Roy got into the business, day to day he and his team are usually to be found taking care of more prosaic tasks. Servicing older cars and issuing WOFs for them takes a special set of skills and a whole lot of specialist knowledge – knowledge which some younger mechanics, used to Japanese cars, may lack.

V8s aren’t just a big part of Roy’s signage, either – they’re at the heart of all the best classic hotrods, muscle cars and cruisers. Between them the team at Roy’s have built up, repaired and stripped down thousands of these iconic engines, from Hemis to Chevrolets to

Fords and even the power plants of big European marques like Jaguar. If you’re a connoisseur of the rumbling tone and awesome power of a big V8 you’ll nd the perfect crew to take care of your pride and joy at Roy’s - they share your obsession!

You want examples? Check out the photo – that’s a slick black 1934 Oldsmobile Cutlass hotrod there, parked opposite a midnight blue 1975 Ford Landau. The ice white Jaguar 3.45 MK2 in the middle is still 1965 original – that’s it’s rst and only coat of paint (top tip – that one’s for sale!). Inside there’s a classic Holden ute undergoing its transformation to show car status, and there’s more in the works.

If you’re contemplating buying a classic or hotrod, stop by and talk to Roy rst. He’s got years of experience and advice is free – it could save you time and money. If you’re looking to get that project car out of the garage and onto the road he’s the guy to see. And if you need a warrant, repair, paint, panel work or service for your treasured classic (or your daily driver), you won’t nd a team more knowledgeable about real steel!

Real steel comes to DargavilleIt’s a garage full of big boy’s toys – classics from the USA and Europe immaculately restored or waiting their turn to be kitted out with chrome, tons of torque and lashings of horsepower

Kaipara KaiKaipara KaiKaipara Kai& Fun Festival

We are very grateful to our sponsors for their support at the 2012 Festival

Thanks are in order after record festival turnoutThis year’s Kaipara Kai and Fun Festival truly had something for everyone – the crowds

who turned out to sample the best of our local fare were spoiled for choice when it came to food, wine, fun and entertainment.

But an event of this magnitude doesn’t happen overnight, and the organisers behind the successful festival would like to offer their thanks to the many unsung heroes, generous organisations and local businesses who made it all possible. The organisers – and the people of Dargaville – would like to make their appreciation known.

From support for visiting celebrity chef Allyson Gofton to the stunning reworks display which capped the festivities, all the way down to simple things like the loan of picnic tables and trestles or donations of time and enthusiasm, it was the volunteers and benefactors who made the Festival happen. It’s the same for many community events – and it’s quite often the same dedicated people you’ll nd behind the scenes time and time again.
