The Maungaturoto Christmas Parade is set to take place on Saturday 3 December, starting at 6.00pm at the congregational Church and winding its way through town. The evening will culminate in events at the Maungaturoto Country Club.

“Entries for fl oats are starting to trickle in but we need heaps more,” said organiser, Terri Donaldson.

“There will be lots of things to do, with heaps of family friendly games, activities and give-aways. If you would like to have a stall there is no cost for this.”

Ruawai Christmas Float Parade will take place on Saturday December 17 — festivities start at 10.00am outside the Four Square.

“Floats will leave the community Church at 11.00am and make their way through Ruawai and return to park outside the Four Square,” said Ruawai Promotions Group organiser, Trevor Harris.

“There will be prizes for the best fl oats and a monster Christmas hamper to be drawn, quick fi re raffl es, and a sausage sizzle amongst other things happening on the day.”

Dargaville Christmas Parade is on December 3 and starts at 12pm at the BP.

After announcing his decision in May, Ruawai farmer Greg Gent stepped down this month after 10 years service on Fonterra’s Board of Directors, and will take up a new role on the board of the BNZ, where he will serve as the Regional Chairman, Northland.

Changingboards

“The BNZ has moved towards having a more regional focus and being very much a part of their communities,” says Mr Gent.

Sam Johnson, BNZ General Manager for Northland, approached Mr Gent about the position.

“I’ve had a long relationship with Sam and I had a look at the role and thought, ‘Yes’. I’ve done governance for a long time and have fi nished at Fonterra; I’ve decided that I want to do a bit more locally.”

Mr Gent says with the bank going in the direction it is, it suited his new focus and he is looking at other local ventures also. Several months ago, Mr Gent was appointed to the Northland District Health Board.

“Last week, I ran a governance seminar in Whangarei, which is probably the fi rst tangible thing I have been involved in and instigated — and I was quite wrapped with the way it went.

“I’m a Northlander, born and bred, and I’m looking forward to working with Sam and growing the BNZ’s presence and market share in Northland.

A White Ribbon Day march stopped passersby and one-way traffi c, spreading the message to stop violence. The day is practiced internationally and is signifi ed by people wearing a white ribbon to show that they do not condone violence towards women and children.

The march, involving people on foot, ‘dressed up’ cars and motorbikes, started at the band rotunda and made it’s way down to The Warehouse. It paused near Kapia Street, to enable Mayor Tiller and Detective Sergeant Jonathan Tier, to address the crowd.

Mayor Tiller observed the way that modern life has altered the way we communicate and urged people to talk more — rather than rely on email and text messages. Jonathan revealed some shocking statistics about violent crime and urged people affected by violence to reach out and ask for help.

A convoy of bikes and classic hot rod cars continued on to Dairy Flat and joined the White Ribbon Run back to Bream Bay.

“Thanks heaps to the people who showed up,” said organiser, Tina Stewart. “The White Ribbon Run is stopping in Dargaville next year, after visiting smaller towns. It will be a neat day for the whole community — I’m so excited about it.”

The White Ribbon Run will include about two hundred motorbikes plus hot rod cars, which will roll into Dargaville during the community event. Tina is currently working with businesses, the council and police to organise a community day, complete with free food and entertainment.

Pouto has always been a focal point of Kaipara Harbour. For Maori it is the ancestral home of Te Uri o Hau, a hapu that is part of the Ngati Whatua people. When early Europeans realised the value of its position overlooking the entrance and much of the harbour, they soon established a pilot station and built a lighthouse.

In her memoirs a long time Kaipara resident, Enid (Jonny) Jones wrote about her childhood days in Pouto. ‘Cut off as we were by twenty miles of broken country and swamps, living in Pouto in those days was like living on an island. Rarely someone rode through from Tangaihi (Tangaehe) or drove a car along the beach. But the road was on its way and fi nally got all the way in 1940’.

Although still a little isolated, it is no longer like an island and has a good road that takes you right down to Pouto Point. But as more residents and visiting holiday makers arrived there came worries about the environment.

On behalf of the Pouto Off-road Vehicles Working Group the Department

of Conservation published a brochure in 2005 and named it ‘Pouto — Hidden Treasures’. The group represented Pouto ratepayers, Waikaretu Marae, Kaipara District Council, Forest and Bird, Dargaville 4WD Club, Historic Places Trust and local tourist operators.

The publication pointed out that the peninsula contains one of the biggest natural sand dune systems left in New Zealand with some dunes rising to 214 metres above the sea. Over the 600 hectares there are ‘active mobile dunes, consolidated dunes, sand fl ats, lakes, wetlands, scrub and forest’.

Between the lowest and highest parts there lies more than twenty fresh water lakes and swamps, all of importance as the home of signifi cant but threatened fi sh and plant life.

Plants named as being in trouble are Swamp Fern, Pingao and Tuatara plant. Birds under the shadow of extinction are New Zealand Dab Chick, Dotterel, Australasian Bittern and Brown Teal. Dwarf Inanga, a fresh water fi sh is also said to

be in danger. The brochure reminds beach goers that marine mammals such as seals, sea lions and dolphins are protected species.

It also notes that ‘Pouto is a place of extremes and contrasts. It appears indestructible with the wild Tasman Sea pounding its beaches. It appears in harmony with the stillness and silence of the wetlands and bush. It appears to be constantly resurrecting itself with its seemingly endless mobile sand dunes’.

But the Department of Conservation warns that Pouto’s unique ecosystem is vulnerable, with a real threat coming from recreational vehicles causing damage to vegetation.

‘Dunes act as a massive energy absorber and barrier from the wild elements. Vegetation traps windblown sand to maintain the dune barrier. Damaged vegetation causes erosion, increases sand movement causing irrevocable damage to the lakes, wetlands and the entire ecosystem’. We have been warned.

Active mobile dunes, consolidated dunes, sand flats, lakes and wetlands at Pouto are spectacular but also very fragile

Kai Iwi Lakes Water Ski Club is gearing up for their second Splash Day of the new season. The Saturday, December 3, event is for younger children who would like to learn to water ski or those who are just starting out in the sport and is followed by an inter-club competition on Sunday.

It is an exciting time for the ski club, with their members scooping up a number of awards at the recent Kaipara District Sports Awards. The club is also holding their annual tournament from March 23 to 25 next year, followed by their hosting of the national competition from April 1 to 8 next year.

“The club had great success at the Kaipara Sports Awards,” says co-ordinator, Sarah Wainwright. “Cousins, Toni Atkinson and Aaron Baldwin, both received awards — Toni was Sportswoman of the Year and Aaron received a Youth Sportsperson Achievement Award and earlier on in the year, they both represented New Zealand.

It’s good to know that no matter how advanced technology becomes, there will always be one company in Dargaville who understand how to keep it running smoothly.

Computer Worx have made the move to a big new building on Victoria Street to keep pace with their rapidly expanding business, and as information technology becomes more and more vital to both home and business life their skills are in greater demand than ever before.

Computer Worx can design and build a computer to suit all needs — from basic internet browsing machines to high-powered gaming systems at the cutting edge of graphics. If that means it’s time to say goodbye to your old PC, they can even transfer your important personal data over for you. You won’t lose a single document or family photo. They even offer an on-site installation service for local customers. If your computer isn’t working quite right, or a key part needs replacement or an upgrade, Computer Worx will solve your problem quickly and ef ciently.

The local innovators also operate their own independent Internet Service Provider (I.S.P),

New address for IT expertsproviding ultra-fast broadband at affordable rates. Between these valuable services, it’s easy to see why they are the rst choice for many prominent b u s i n e s s e s around the north.

Here’s what John Warren, Manager of Tutukaka Marina a Computer Worx customer has to say about their service — “Since changing to Computer Worx for our internet provision and IT support we have been delighted with the prompt and friendly service they have provided. Most issues have been able to be resolved over the phone and on the few occasions when this hasn’t been possible a technician has arrived on site within a short period of time and quickly identi ed the problem. I would recommend Computer Worx to any Northland small to medium business owner who is looking for top quality, affordable internet services and support.”

the prizegiving — there’s always hot competition to make the team and they’ll all be pushing themselves to do their best. There are a number of age divisions from sub-junior — the youngest skier will probably be 7 — to senior men’s 4 with over 65’s and there will be our best skiers in the open divisions as well.

“The Kai Iwi Lakes Water Ski Club was established in 1968 and some of our up and coming skiers are third generation members. Our members vary from casual skiers who just enjoy getting out on the water to NZ reps going to world champs.”

Warning – Long Hot Summer LoomingDoes your garden die over summer? Are you too busy with holiday chores, Christmas planning, children home from school, or summer holiday destinations to visit?

Wouldn’t you rather relax in lush green surroundings? Have a great supply of healthy summer vegetables on hand? See the kids playing on a soft green lawn?

With the right approach to watering, and some great advice from Palmers, this can be your garden this summer, and every summer from now on. Watering systems can be easy, automated, and not at all expensive.

We are expecting a long hot summer. The sun is hotter, the days longer, and the wind patterns we have experienced lately tend to dry out plants three times faster than sunshine alone.

Without automation, a proper watering technique is important.

Water in the early morning or evening to avoid burning plants and to minimise evaporation. If you have pots and containers, water into the pot, rather than over the plant. Water trees by watering the ground around the tree. This encourages deep rooting. Give trees a really good soak every couple of days rather than a light sprinkle daily. Lawns require about an inch of water a week.

If you are planting over the summer months, consider using Crystal Rain or Saturaid as an additive to your potting media. These products act in slightly different ways, but both assist in keeping root systems hydrated. Most good quality potting mixes tend to have one or the other of these products included in the mix.

At Palmers we stock a full range of Pope watering products, from hoses and hose reels, to sprinklers, guns, and wands. Pope hoses have factory-attached fittings – some in brass for a lifetime of use. These products come with very lengthy warranties.

For hands-free watering soaker hoses and weeper hoses are very efficient, and quite inexpensive. Excellent for the vege garden.

Irrigation pipe and fittings, and the advice on how to get started, and all available in store. We can show you how to plan, install, and automate a full irrigation system that will give you trouble-free watering throughout the year. Automation saves time, saves water, and keeps your place looking great.

Students at the Arts Studio in Ruawai were in for a motivational treat when neo-impressionist artist, Lance O’Gorman, stopped in to teach a challenging, day-long workshop. Hokianga artist, Bex Truloff, also attended the introduction to impressionist painting.

Twelve students, the maximum number, attended the ‘inspiring’ induction to the art form.

“We had two hour breaks,” says art student, Yvonne Wilson. “And we needed them!

“The art students all wanted to do something in impressionism but none of us were very confi dent about it so (artist and teacher), Frances Casey, invited Lance. As a teacher, he is very motivating and very polished and professional.

“He really encouraged us to use our

That’s my impressionimagination and be totally free, because with impressionism it’s all about what you think it is about and let the viewer work it out. Everyone really got something out of it — everyone went away buzzing about everything they’d learned.

“Lance said he’d been through Ruawai many, many times but had never stopped and didn’t realised the Arts Studio was there. However, he thought it was great and really, really enjoyed himself.”

The Arts Studio in Ruawai has grown to about twenty students and is located at the former Scout Hall, alongside Ruawai Primary School. The studio runs two classes per week, school holiday workshops and is looking forward to a possible art sale at North Kaipara A & P Show at Paparoa Showgrounds early next year.

A Mangawhai woman is paying tribute to Northland’s Electricity Rescue Helicopter service after suffering potentially fatal head injuries while cycling in Mangawhai Forest, near Te Arai. She is now encouraging others who have benefi tted from the service to donate to the 2011 Appeal.

Sixty-one-year-old Ruth Porter was cycling with her husband Bryan when she was thrown over her handle bars late last month.

Ruth was unconscious for 15 minutes and suffered a broken cheek bone, three brain bleeds, heavy bruising to her hip and left arm, plus a broken bone in her right thumb.

Bryan immediately phoned emergency services and tried to rouse his wife back to consciousness.

The Mangawhai First Response Unit and Maungaturoto Ambulance Service attended to Ruth in the forest and transported her to the local domain from where she was airlifted to Whangarei Hospital.

Ruth wore a neck brace for two weeks and is still battling nerve damage around her left eye. Despite this, she is thankful to those involved in her rescue.

“I sincerely want to say thank you to all of the emergency services, but particularly to the Rescue Helicopter Service,” says Ruth.

“There are ten and a half hours of my life I have no memory of from the time of the accident but I’m told they were just wonderful to my

husband and made my trip far more comfortable than it would have been going by road. I had a lot of injuries which could have been a lot worse — but hey I’m lucky.

“It is great to be with my children and grandchildren again so I can only encourage people to support a great service.”

Donations to the Northland’s Electricity Rescue Helicopter appeal can be made using the offi cial donation form and freepost envelope delivered to household letterboxes throughout the Kaipara region.

People can also donate by visiting any Northland ASB Bank or a one-off online payment to ERH Appeal — ASB Bank account number12-3106-0046000-00.

Those who donate $5 or more can be in to win one of 30 rides in the Electricity Rescue Helicopter. Northpower and Top Energy will match donations dollar for dollar to a maximum of $150,000.

The own-your-own development of six units being developed by the at the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust is a step closer to reality after a major concrete pour of the foundations

“The fl oor pad for the fi rst block has been laid and Brogan builders will be busy over coming weeks completing the building,” said trust chair, Don McKay.

“Huband contractors have laid the drainage services and will be completing the roading and landscaping over the next couple of months. Two units have been sold. There is also a vacant rental unit, at $105 per week, in a secure environment with support from manager Tracy and the caring rest home staff as required. The stunning rural views are a bonus.”

Pahi. A transmission site in Whakapirau will provide coverage on the eastern side of Pahi in areas where it hasn’t been available before — specifi cally Pahi Rd, Cliff St, Picadilly St, Bonham St, Fisher St and Fenwick’s Point Rd. If everything goes as planned, the service will be available by Christmas.

“Despite the recent rhetoric, many rural dwellers have been enjoying the same or faster speeds than those available in the cities for several years now. Time and time again I hear that there has been no coverage in rural areas and it’s simply untrue. We have been working with

rural communities since we began, as have other providers around the country.”

Mr Simon says his company’s service is faster and cheaper than that proposed by the large competitor.

“Our customers enjoy the benefi ts of stable, symmetric 5 Mbps internet access with optional phone services, compared to the Vodafone offering which has peak speeds of 5 Mbps — and that is only on download, while their upload speed is considerably slower.

“Our installation and setup fee is cheaper, as are our monthly package plans, and our maximum data cap is 100Gb compared to their 10Gb.”

As well as this, Mr Simon says the enterprise-grade technology Uber Group uses means that in almost all cases, the company is aware of a customer fault before the customer notices it, and often has it resolved without the customer ever being aware of it.

“As a result, customers rarely need to call us, which saves them time and means we can put our time and resources into constantly improving our service.”

While Mr Simon acknowledges the effort and investment being put into making sure that all New Zealanders have access to fast broadband, he says that he and other regional wireless providers are frustrated

Uber is querying claims by Vodafone that the beginnings of its rollout under the Government’s $285 million Rural Broadband Initiative is providing ‘thousands of families with the fi rst opportunity to get good quality broadband’.

“Uber Group has been providing wireless broadband in rural communities since 2003, and covers Northland from Te Kao to Warkworth and Snells Beach from over 100 transmission sites,” said managing director, Hayden Simon.

“This is a continuing process. We are about to extend our wireless broadband service in

that their larger competitors are claiming to offer something that has never been available before.

“More importantly, taxpayers may be paying for broadband infrastructure to be duplicated in areas where there is existing coverage — often better than what is being proposed — that has the capacity to handle all the traffi c likely to be generated.

“Small companies like ours — and there are a number of them throughout New Zealand — have taken the risks, raised the money and set up the infrastructure to bring wireless broadband services to where they are most needed, and now we have what in our view is government-funded competition which is not in either ours or the taxpayers’ best interests.”

“At the very least we want to let people know that there are alternatives and that in many cases they are faster, more cost-effective, and more reliable.”

Northland wireless broadband provider, Uber Group, is about toextend its coverage in Kaipara while taking issue with a claim by national

communications player, Vodafone, that the giant company is aiming to ‘break the digital divide’

Marine gas services

Don’t forget – we also service and fit gas for caravans, RVs, baches and homes!

Nigel Tonkin has been keeping Kaipara boaties on the water and out of trouble for the last 13 years — a career in marine services which began on dry land repairing motorcycles.

The similarities between the powerful 4-stroke motors used by two-wheelers and modern outboards weren’t lost on Nigel, who also noted that ‘boats didn’t come into the workshop covered in mud’.

It was the beginning of a great partnership, as the trophy winning motorcyclist (who still keeps an off road bike in the shed for trail rides) developed his skills in tandem with advances in marine engine technology. The walls of his Dargaville workshop attest to a natural aptitude with nautical power gear — a long list of awards and certifi cations from prominent outboard manufacturer Yamaha, list a record of ever-increasing expertise.

Along the way Nigel has also developed a reputation for excellence in marine electrical work — and as boats become more and more high tech this facet of his business has grown in demand. While boaties of yesteryear were content with a pull-start two horsepower unit, oars and a rod and reel, the modern vessel bristles with electronics, from fi sh fi nders to sat

As the power and complexity of boats has increased Nigel Tonkin has stayed ahead of the curve, and with summer approaching he’s offi cially launching his own independent business — Kaipara Marine Services. From outboards to electrics and even trailers he’s got the tools and the experience to see you right for a summer of fi shing and fun on the water.

A welcome break from the wind attracted a bunch of keen fi shers onto the Kaipara Harbour for the Point Curtis Cruising Club’s fi shing contest last Sunday.

The club is based on the hotel at Kaiwaka, where fi sher, Andrew Kenny picked up second and third prizes for his kahawai catch.

“I was just pipped at the post for fi rst,” he lamented. “But I did win the big raffl e of the evening”.

Pictured are Andrew (left) with Gary ‘Gravy’ Greaves, deciding on which fi sh will be entered in the contest.

LIFESTYLERKaiparaWith the King of the Kaipara fi shing contest kicking off this weekend,

keen anglers from around New Zealand are descending on the district with a veritable arsenal of custom lures, secret tricks and fi shing lore in hopes of landing the prize winning fi sh.

It’s a well known fact that you can’t catch a fi sh unless you catch its attention, and this old adage remains true in this age of scientifi cally designed artifi cial baits and lures, with one company leading the way in the development of gear that can’t help but hook you the big one.

It’s a fair bet that a large number of King of the Kaipara contenders will be reaching for Shimano when they go for their tackle boxes this Saturday… the legendary name in fi shing has been hard at work, consulting with top anglers and lure designers to refi ne and sharpen their jigs, lures and baits for another season of fi shing fun. Years of experience adding up to decades of fi shing know-how have been combined with the latest materials and hydrodynamic science to create a selection of lures which fi sh will fi nd fascinating… and deadly!

Shimano lead out with their unique Waxwing lures — new for 2012 and utterly without peer in the fi shing world. The trademark ‘wings’ add stability, while developing a side-to-side action with a lifelike ‘kick’. With movement and colour mimicking a tasty bait fi sh, it’s not long before the Waxwing’s twin upturned hooks get into play! For bigger game, check out Shimano’s range of OCEA pencil baits — designed to tackle the biggest saltwater fi sh, hook them and hold them with immense tensile load strength. Most striking of all are Shimano’s Lucanus jigs — big-eyed, colourful jigs designed for mid-water to bottom-dwelling species. It only takes a nibble for fi sh to hook themselves, and with replaceable hooks and skirts each well-crafted jig will go the distance.

Combined with the revolutionary technology of Shimano’s rods and reels — long recognised as market leaders — this unique range of lures is just the ticket for the King of the Kaipara and beyond. You can bet that Shimano will continue to lead the way with innovation and development in years to come, keeping anglers at the cutting edge of technology. Until then, why not accept their invitation to try new techniques, new tackle, and new fi shing thrills this summer? You’ll fi nd that with their range of rods, reels, lures and top-fl ight equipment, Shimano offer a whole new angle on the sport we’re hooked on!

Innovation makes these lures irresistible

When competition is fi erce innovation is spurred on in leaps and bounds, and the demand from customers for a stylish, attractive, comfortable and economical small car has seen this market segment overfl ow with options. Gone are the days of the ‘bare bones’ entry level small car, little more than a motor and four wheels. No, with 2012 just around the corner, it’s time to take a look at the new Kia Rio, a car which offers an amazing experience and a host of features for a very tidy price.

Kia have been surprising the motoring world for the last few years with vehicles like the Optima which punch well above their weight. Stylistically, the Korean auto maker has the formidable talent of award-winning designer Peter Schreyer to draw on, and their engineering department are up to the challenge of making the substance fi t the style.

In the case of the 2012 Rio, Kia offer up a slick and purposeful little package — a snub-nosed four-door compact with a low roofl ine and fl ared wheel arches, with a scalloped swoop-down line through the doors reminiscent of the penmanship of the great Harley Earl. This is no 1950s cruiser, though — the aggressive styling of the grille and those swept-back headlamps hint at the Rio’s intention before you turn the key.

And while it’s no screaming racecar (with a 1.4 litre engine mated to a four-speed automatic the Rio is smooth and economical rather than fi ery). I have never felt a small vehicle so planted on the tarmac. Comparisons with the sublimely balanced MX5 are totally applicable as

Balancing act with extra style

you feel the clever suspension setup push each wheel down into the corners, computers and old-fashioned engineering working in harmony. This isn’t downforce generated by hulking wings and diffusers, either — it’s simply one of the most engaging and reassuring feats of suspension setup ever seen. With an ANCAP 5-star rating backing it up, this certainly makes the Rio a safe little car. And with four doors, a cavernous boot and mod-cons like Bluetooth,

ipod connector and aircon standard, ‘little’ never looked so big.

When it really comes down to it, the sense of balance and poise which the Rio exhibits is not something easily put into words.

You really must try this engaging supermini for yourself on a nice convoluted piece of country road, and feel the response through the steering wheel and the pedals.

Honda motorcycles have been strong contenders year in and year out in the World Superbike and AMA Superbike competitions, devoting millions of dollars and countless hours to research and development to improve their stable of high-performance machines.

With a racing pedigree stretching back to the golden era of the sport, Honda have always been quick to bring racing advances to the motorcycling public, tuning and fettling their street bikes with the know-how earned in oil and sweat on the world’s top tracks.

This year has proved no exception, with bold new design cues and blistering power the order of the day across Honda’s fl agship CBR range — an acronym renowned among riders for power and precision handling. From the legendary CB R 750 of yesteryear which put the best of British to shame, through to the high-tech Fireblade, the CBR badge is the motorcycling equivalent of Lamborghini’s raging bull — a mark of prestige which promises limitless thrills.

World superbike legend Aaron Slight sums up this year’s CBR 1000RR best — ‘Not only does it look the trick, the Fireblade is so nimble, light and powerful it gets you begging for a racetrack...’

And he’s not alone in piling accolades on this muscular-looking, slick superbike. From its cast-aluminium core to its compact, centralised engine with larger bore and stroke, all the way down to a set of 4-piston calliper brakes, this is a machine which invites the rider to push the boundaries, while still providing thrills for every level of experience. Seasoned motorcyclists will

be rewarded with scalpel-sharp handling which enables a smooth line through the bends, and a torquey whack of power from the big 999cc mill on the straights.

For those who want a head-turner with slightly less muscle but oozing aggressive style, Honda also offer a re-upped CBR 600RR — cut from the same cloth as its MotoGP inspiration and with the most powerful 600cc engine in its class. Once again, a new design direction has gifted the CBR 600 with stunning looks to match its turn of speed.

Both of these awesome machines are available now for a summer of riding pleasure — see Mike and the team at Planet Honda Whangarei for a test ride and witness the power and precision for yourself!

and actively participated in his fi rst council meeting.

Dargaville Community Cinema Charitable Trust Additional Funding Request

Kaipara District Council has deferred its decision about whether to provide further additional support for the cinema build fi t-out project in the old library space until after council’s December meeting.

The cinema trust requires $57,212 within the current fi nancial year, which is over and above the $200,000 approved by council during the 2011/12 annual plan.

Councillors questioned whether the trust has produced a viable business plan, whether the project is fi nancially viable and whether the quotes are accurate. Council is also waiting for the results of the fi nancial forecast to ascertain whether they have the funds available.

The trust have fundraised for the cinema’s projection system and associated costs but not the buildingfi t-out.

Paparoa Library Lease Renewal Despite the recent sale of of the former council building,

Brooke House, in Paparoa, the Paparoa community library is welcome to stay. The lease for the building is due to expire this month but the new owners have assured council that they wish to continue an ongoing relationship.

They would like input into how to proceed so that the needs of the Council and the library are satisfi ed.

The landowner will initiate an agreement and prepare lease documentation after which they will enter into

discussion with council. The landowner would like to increase lease payments by $260 per annum but this will be confi rmed at discussions post settlement.

Taskforce for jobs – Dale Williams, Mayor of Otorohanga

Mayor Neil Tiller has met with community agencies that work with unemployed school leavers between the ages of 15 and 18 in an effort to establish a relationship and collaboration between all parties.

It is hoped that together with local business, training initiatives can be developed. Mayor of Otorahanga, Dale Williams, heads the Mayors Taskforce for Jobs and has attended three public meetings in the Kaipara in recent months to explain how he has turned youth unemployment — and the town — around.

CadetsFour new cadets have joined council and will be working

in customer services, the Kaiwaka council offi ce, community spaces and economic development. The cadetship scheme aims to encourage young people throughout Northland to gain employment skills and local government experience.

Rally New ZealandExpression of Interest for Rallies in the Kaiapra District,

March and June 2012.Kaipara District Council agrees in principle to hosting

the rally, which effectively means Rally NZ can use the Kaipara’s roads.

The March rally is Rally of NZ and the June rally is a world rally. When the application is made for road closures associated with the rally, council will advise that a bond of $20,000 is required to cover any damage and that a payment of $1,000 deposit toward the Temporary Road Closure Fee be made.

Discussion revolved around the need for Kaipara communities to make the most out of these two events and traffi c management.
