    NEWSLETTER N7 April 2012

an Kincaid has been a gaffer for just over 30 years. His collaboration with Robert Richardson started on Oliver StonesThe

Doorsin 1991 and since then they have worked together on many famous films with directors such as Quentin Tarantino on

Kill Bill 1 & 2, Inglorious Basterdsor Martin Scorsese on Casino, The Aviator, Shutter Islandor Hugofor which Richardson

    eceived an Oscar this year.

an was also a gaffer with other top DPs such as Peter Suschitzky on Mars Attack, Owen Roizman on Wyatt Earpor Roberto

Schaeffer for The Kite Runner. He is currently shooting in New Orleans QuentinTarantinos new movie Django Unchained.

While we visited him on the shoot to show him the new 1600 W lights, Ian took a few minutes of his time to tell us a few things

about his experience of our products:

The K5600 lights are amongst the most versatile and reliable illumination tools in my quiver. The K5600 team continues to have

an open ear to lighting professionals and consistently produce innovative and creative solutions to problems in daylight

balanced scenes. I use K5600 products on every feature I light and eagerly anticipate every new product they design. I really

ke the Alpha 18 and the light quality when used with the clear glass. We have 2 on this film that we got from TM Equipmentental New Orleans, and some Joker Bug 400 and 800. On World War Zthat we shot in Malta last summer, I had 2 Alpha 18

as well. I usually have two of them except on Hugothat we shot mostly tungsten on stage and we used a few Jokers.

    More News from the US:

Variable is a production company which specializes in commercial work dealing primarily with real people and real stories.

We have found that K5600 offers equipment that gives us significant advantages when portraying these true to life stories.

The nature of our subjects and their environments often do not allow us the luxury of large crews and expansive lighting set-

ups. In our experience Joker Kits have proved to be ideal for our work-flow. With them we can work lightly without having to

    compromise our visuals.

Our projects require us to consistently travel near and far. The Joker Kits are perfect for this mobile style of shooting due to

heir compact size and quick setup. Above all the multiple voltage option allows use in most countries

Quality of light is just as crucial as is the ability to shape it. The variety of adapters K5600 offers for the Joker Kits allows

countless options for sculpting light. Currently we use 400W and 800W Joker-Bug kits together with the Chimera, Bug-a-Beam,

and Soft Tube. Together with the various adapters a single HMI can act as five different lights.

    News from England:

Gaffer Kevin Gardner sent us an example of the Alpha 4K with an Octa Chimera for the Music video of Amore

    News from Switzerland:

To achieve the blue ambiance of the film for that scene, we used an Alpha 4K with a blue gel to light the whole area and an Alpha 1600 for the back

white light and a Joker Bug 800 to do the street light effect.

Pascal Montjovent is a Swiss Cinematographer whose

passion is lighting. When he is not shooting a feature film

or a commercial, Pascal does lighting workshops and

seminars or writes on his blog.

Pascal just finished a feature film called Prisoner. The

movie is based on 5 different color moods. Therefore we

used gels extensively and we needed punchy light sources

and versatility was a plus. We had a chance to use the

brand new Alpha 1600 in numerous scenes. Florian

Fromentin the gaffer on the film was also very glad to

have a small lightweight unit so controllable and

    lightweight with a stunning output.

Film was shot in France and Switzerland with Transpalux

    providing the equipment.

    News from Haparanda:

    News from Montreal :

Robert Ruffo is a Montreal based writer, director, photographer and DP.

    News from Toronto:

Thierry Garepian from our US office just before the opening of the

"February Freeze show" taking place every year at William F White in

Toronto, Canada: This year it was hot with -10C only. But the warm

welcome we get, easily counter balance the cold.It was a good opportunity to introduce the new Joker Bug 1600 in

    Canada.

    VISIT us in Central Hall

    NAB 2012 just closed on

    Thursday, 19th of April. The

    show was extremely busy and

    according to many exhibitors, all

agreed, it was a great year. The

K5600 booth was very wellattended. The Joker Bug 1600

and its 2 options (Buglite and

Zoom beamer) as well as the

Alpha 1600were definitely thebooth attraction.Well be there again next

    year.

Haparanda is not a country. It is the most

northern port in Sweden. It is also probably

where the most northern rental facility in

Europe is operating. Under the North Star

Rental banner, Dagsljus of Stockholm and

Angel Films and Devil rentals of Helsinki

opened the facility where the K5600 lights

    are available for hire.

We shoot fashion-y music video, ads, etc., and often the objective we aim for could besummarized as "lush".

I could not be more excited about the new Big Eye for Joker Bugs.

We just used it (with a joker 800) in a field at night, and it looked something like an alien moon

used as an in-frame backlight. It also beautifully contoured the subject in a way that a tiny light

source (like a small HMI) never could, and spread its light beautifully and evenly across the

field. We back-lit about 2 acres with that thing

Yes, we could have used a 12K Fresnel, but that would have been massively heavy, and we

would never have been able to afford the generators to run that in a field, let alone the rental

cost, and then the fact that we would have need a bigger truck, etc. etc. At 800 ISO native, you

don't need lights that strong on MX except to fight sunlight from far away.

You can't rent Big Eyes in Montreal yet, so we bought our own, but Kudos to K5600 for

    inventing something truly stellar.
