The Background

• Reading for pleasure , is on the decline, due to the advent of Electronic Media (TV) , Gaming and Play stations

• Parents focus on school books adding to the misery of children

• Research has proven that reading skills are imperative to the psychological development of a child.

• And yes ! Books are expensive

Page 4: JUSTMONKEYING : “ The Library for Children”

• According to the U.S. Department of Education more than 60% of K-12 school children are reading below the level needed to proficiently to process the written materials used in their grade levels ( No such study has been conducted in India)

• Kids are reading below the level necessary for the brain-work of reading to be transparent to the mind-work of learning from what they are reading.

• Reading is the skill that matters most, to success in school and children who fall behind in reading are in great academic danger. However, it is not just the lack of reading skills that most endangers these children

Page 5: JUSTMONKEYING : “ The Library for Children”

• Most children who struggle with reading experience , they struggle as a reflection of something wrong with themselves - something to be ashamed of.

• Unintentionally but pervasively, parents, schools, and society as a whole contribute to perpetuating this insidious myth.

• Children don't think that their reading troubles might be due to a normal difference in their genes and brains analogous to being tall or short - they don't think that maybe their parents, siblings, and other care-givers didn't engage them in enough conversation before they started school  -

• No, they blame themselves - they feel ashamed of themselves - ashamed of their minds. Statements like: "I'm dumb", "I'm stupid", "I'm not smart", "I'm not good in school" are all strategies to protect themselves from the shame they feel.

• Most parents irrespective of their backgrounds currently send their children to English Medium Schools

• Children who do not develop reading skills fall back scholastically.

• This problem becomes cyclical as the pressure mounts both peer and parents and the child falls back further

• Reading is no longer a fun activity

Social Entreprenuership

Social entrepreneurship is the recognition of a social problem and the uses of entrepreneurial principles to organize, create and manage a social venture to achieve a desired social change.

While a business entrepreneur typically measures performance in profit and return, a social entrepreneur also measures positive returns to society.

The main aim of social entrepreneurship is to further broaden social, cultural, and environmental goals. Social entrepreneurs are commonly associated with the voluntary and not-for-profit sectors but this need not preclude making a profit
