With October here ••• we will witnessthe unfolding of Howthorne/s unique I ife style. There will be many opportun ities to become in-volved in a wide variety of activities. Or if youprefer ••• not become active in anything, youknow that your wishes are respected.

We are already feeling a quickening tem-po in the life of our community as many of ourfriends return home from roaming around thecountry. It is a .delight to hear them declarethat "it is so good to be home at Hawthorne II • Al-most every day an automobile - sometimes with atra i Ier attached - passes by our door.

Then there are the many new faces whichappear in close timing with the arrival of motor-ized box cars of furniture. The population of ourcommunity is going to almost double betweennow and the end of the year.

There is a quickening tempo to the pro-grams, too. Many regular activities are exper-iencing an increased attendance and the zippi-ness of eager, energetic participants. Newactivities are ready to be launched or are wellalong in the planning stage. These will be dis-cussed in detail in the Program Bulletin andscheduled on the monthly Program Calendar.

The most significant activity of Octoberwill be the Community-Wide Program PlanningConference. It will be held in the Clubhouseon October 25, beginning at 2 p.rn, (The orig-inal date announced in the September Bulletinhas been changed to October 25). It is at th istime that most of the programs for next year willbe outl ined, many specific plans will be formu-lated, and leaders for each major activity will bechosen •• chairman, co-chairman and recorder. These leaders will comprise the Program AdvisoryGroup wh ich meets with the Program Director onMonday mornings to evaluate the past week IS

Dental Chairs Can Be Funan experience of Harry Galbraith

While living in a small underdevelopedcountry I lost a filling in one of my teeth. UponEdnals advice I went to a Dr. Mendoze who turn-ed out to be a rea I cha ra cter I a Iways hav ing tworubber ba 115 in h is hands - even in church. Hisoffice was separated from the waiting room by alarge plate glass window, permitting his waitingpatients to observe him at work. If I sat uprightin the steel dental chair the head rest hit me inthe shoulders, and if I slid down far enough formy head to fit in the rest I I would sl ide out on tothe floor. The good Doctor proceeded to washhis hands with a can of Ajax cleaner - then hewashed the sink and dusted all of his equipment.

He then suggested that he look at my up-per partial - while fumbl ing with it he reachedinto his own mouth and pulled out his own partialexplaining that mine must be quite old as they nolonger made them from the same material. Duringthis time he replaced his partial and mine severaltimes - I was somewhat worried for fear he wouldget them mixed up. All of th is took about 35minutes. Finally I mentioned my lost filling. With this he was off and running, informing methat my plate certainly did nothing for my person-al ity.

~, Again I mentioned my missing filling. Hesaid to come in Sunday morning at 10.This I did. As I was escorted into theoperating room, the eight men waitingin the anteroom appeared at the win-dow to watch the operation. The sani-

tation was not up to standard as the city waterwas shut off for the day and he had run out of A-jax. My warped personality was again reviewedand from his archives I was shown many jaws thathad been used to develop more personable plates.

During the process, the fill ing fell onthe floor. I can imagine what the customers inthe anteroom must have thought when they sawtwo grown men crawl ing around on their handsand knees. Unfortunately he found the fill ingand had it in my mouth before I had a chance toexamine it so I was not sure it was the fill ing orsome form of plant life. As nothing grew out ofthe cavity I have accepted that it was the filling.

A few days later we received over onehundred oysters in a plastic bag addressed to IIMr.and Mrs. Edna Galbraith. II He must have appre-ciated our business.

COUNTING TICKETSEverything was in readiness when the happy Haw-thorners departed the clubhouse for our great Jai-Alai trip •• thanks to the two ladies who plannedeverything to the last detail. Elsie Franta and Vio-let Ross take a last minute check of tickets beforeboarding the bus.

Elsie and Violet lmagn ificient way they organ ized and executedthe Jai-Alai trip to Ocala in September.

It took two big chartered busses to shut-tle our enthusiasts. We left at 10:30 in the morn-ing, returned about 6. Nearly all of the 100 whowere with us were seeing THE fastest game in theworld for the very first time. Only a few wereexperts.

Florence Abraham is one. Florence gaveus the information that the ball is called a pelota, and at times it is hurled at 150 miles an hour fromthe cesta; thatls the sl im "basket" used to catchand cast the pelota. She told us something aboutwagering, too. But itls too involved for mentionhere, except we did hear that several Hawthorn-ers had a very profitable afternoon, •.. Myrleand Les Padden headed the Iist. (coincidence! The Paddens topped the horse racing too)

Jai-Alai gets in your blood ... watchingit, or playing it. But it isn '} likely that Hawthorn-ers will ever play. Weill just watch, thank you!

An Interview With Estelle by Marion Ralph

"To lk to Estelle Halloran about icons."This was my first Penn Notes assignment after al-most seven weeks of visiting points northward. The assignment appealed, partly because we hadacquired an icon in our travels years ago. It wasa fascinating interview, but it wasn If confinedto icons.

To begin with, Estelle insists that she isnot an authority on icons. She first became in-terested in the subject when she was a student atRhode Island School of Design. She did not fol-low through, however I until about 15 years agowhen her interest was renewed by an acqua intancewhose mother had brought three icons from Greeceunder difficult circumstances. Thereupon Estelledid some extensive research, wrote a paper abouticons, and gave talks on the subject; but herch ief interest was in making reproductions, usingthe original method of gold leafing, which shesays is fast becoming a lost art.

We all knew Estelle was an artist, but toappreciate fully her achievements in both paintingand sculpture, one should see all the awards andhonors she has won, not only in her home state of

Connecticut, but also in Florida, where she andher husband have Iived since 1969.

One of her paintings that should be ex-hibited here at Hawthorne is entitled "Sugar."Through a microscope with a polarizer attachment, she studied sugar crystals and painted what shesaw - perfect geometric designs in the form eflittle open umbrellas striped with blues, blacks, purples, greens, and highlighted with oranges andyellows.

Estelle's many accomplishments could fillan entire issue of Penn Notes. One which shouldbe mentioned is her award winning design for astained glass window which was installed in theRosen Community Church, Anna Maria, Florida,in March 1972.

Estelle has never accepted remunerationfor her talks or exhibits, but whenever a groupasked what the fee would be, she told them, "Anyold costume jewelry with brilliants that the ladieswant to bring will be appreciated." From theseshe has fashioned two lovely crystal balls. Thefirst she gave to the Anna Maria Church; the sec-ond hangs from the chandel ier in her dinette.
