Brett Holland holds a Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium, Graduate Diploma Education at QUT and Master of Philosophy (Music) from the University of Queensland. Brett’s conducting vocation started with conducting large choral and orchestral works as a young graduate when he was music director for the Queensland University Musical Society; and, as a Masters Candidate he continued that path despite a focus on singing studying conducting with John Dingle and Dr John Nickson. Brett has conducted Carmina Burana, Haydn’s Nelson Mass, Vivaldi Gloria, Cherubini Requiem, Rutter’s When Icicles Hang, Zadok the Priest among many other grand choral pieces. He has sung professionally with Opera Queensland, Opera Australia and as the Bass Soloist for many works, concerts and numerous ensembles over the last 20 years. Twenty years ago Brett sang the Island Songs written by Stephen Leek while a member of the Australian Voices Choir conducted by the composer. Some of Brett’s recent engagements for Opera Queensland were the roles of Caiaphas (St Matthew Passion), King Ivan (Candide) and Il Commissario (Madame Butterfly). Other recent engagements include solo Baritone for Belshazzar’s Feast, solo Bass for Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Christ, solo Bass for Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Adjudicator for the Townsville Eisteddfod (2013), Adjudicator Queensland Catholic Schools Music Festival, Choral workshop clinician for the Bramble Bay Cluster Workshop, Paul Moreton Workshop and OperaQ/Queensland Orchestra Teacher Professional Development Day. Brett is in great demand as a vocal teacher, adjudicator, conductor, guest choral clinician and is the Director of Choral and Vocal Studies at the Brisbane Boys’ College.

Raised in a musical household in Brisbane, the chances that Alison’s future would not include music were approximately zero. After spending her school days exploring every instrument family except brass and enjoying performance experiences in central and western Queensland, the USA and Canada. Alison commenced cello studies at the University of Queensland under Gwyn Roberts, was a consistent member of the Queensland Youth Orchestra including a tour of Japan and South Korea in 1997, began organising and playing in pit orchestras for amateur theatre productions, and was a sought-after session musician. After completing her music degree Alison began teaching instrumental music in private schools on Brisbane’s southside, alongside her private studio.

Composition interests began during secondary school years, with many arrangements and original compositions completed in this time. While teaching in smaller private schools she found a desperate need for String Orchestra music suitable for ensembles with no piano, no double bass, and...well, not much of anything really. Thus, the compositional interests resurfaced and Alison began writing, both music suitable for mixed level ensembles as well as for similar level ensembles. When not at home tending to her three children, Alison currently teaches strings in her private studio and at Brisbane Grammar School.

    Vicki Sargent

This concert is dedicated to a long term staff member at St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace.

Vicki Sargent was born to this world on September 17, 1962 and entered eternal life on October 28, 2007 following a fifteen year battle with breast cancer. After attending Lourdes Hill and three years at teachers’ college, Vicki entered her first and final place of employment at St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace in 1983. Vicki had passion for the Arts and for Education. This passion and competence established her as a leading Visual Arts teacher. In 2001, she was appointed the first female member of the College Leadership Team - an achievement of which she was immensely proud.

In the role of Director of Culture, Vicki had the responsibility of overseeing all co-curricular activities outside the classroom that was not sport related.

Vicki left her charismatic mark on the hearts and minds of many young men in her care because she was able to do the simple but arduous task of seeing the world and responding to it with incredible energy and insight.

Her influence has shaped the future of so many old boys and the memories held dear will never be erased. Her vision in cultural pursuits for boys elevated not only the Gregory Terrace community to many artistic and cultural pinnacles, but also the extended GPS and CIC schools.

We, therefore, dedicate this annual concert to Vicki who led “An Extraordinary Life”.
