    DS Construction overcoming business challenges.

    By B.S. Narula, Director (Operations)

High construction costs and various checkpoints are among the Challenges facing bydevelopers and contractors in Libya. The government here, which holds 40 per cent of

Africas total known oil reserves, is trying to attract foreign investment with taxincentives as it diversifies its economy, while competitive builders are chasing

opportunities in Libya to counteract a slowdown in India, and GCC.

But gaining a foothold in here is challenging for construction companies, despite highlocal demand for new homes. Abu Dhabis Al Maabar is one of the first UAE developers toenter Libya and plans to partner the first construction contract on its US$750 million(Dh2.75 billion) Al Waha project. The development includes a commercial and hospitalitytower with serviced apartments, as well as leisure and retail facilities. While localdemand for good housing is high, investors are deterred by high prices to deliver. I amcalculating the cost of construction here almost double to what are spending in UAE.This was because of high construction costs attributable to the countrys reliance onimported building materials .

Construction costs are a nightmare, which is making it more difficult for Contractorscomplete projects within budgets. While there are numerous projects underconsideration as the Libyan government develops its infrastructure and the property andtourism sectors, contracts are yet to be awarded. Developments have also been put onhold or have stopped mid-way over the past year because of budgets and execution

plans. The contractors and consultants are available, many come from the UAE and otherplaces, but its a matter ofworking out something which businessmen expect to earn in areasonable time and patience to get earning that is the main challenge. We have beenconsistent in attracting right persons to right job since 2001, I would give full marks toour team in HR in India, Libya for their 24/7 service, to bring recruited personnel toLibya. This enables us to execute and complete the awarded projects consistently since2001, while our competitors struggle with severe shortages of right person deployment

and skills to Manage diverse business culture. I Strongly believe that experience cant bebeaten.

The cost of operating as a contractor in Libya is now being seen as far higher than in theGCC. If you want to accelerate your project, the skills to get for execution might not bea phone call away or for that matter the hiring the ri ght person isnt that easy.Contractors including Al Shafar General Contracting and Drake and Scull have alreadywon contracts here, while Arabtec Construction and Al Habtoor Engineering are seekingopportunities there as they expand overseas.

Authorities here have drafted a law that would give tax incentives to foreign companies, such as exempting them from duties on materials imports. Meanwhile, DS Construction is

one of favored companies in the Infrastructure development as we have proven base withseries of successful construction projects executed here. Building complex projectsexecution are currently in demand here. As Libya moved towards being a market-driveneconomy, there would be manageable challenges.

I Congratulate Mr. GVS Rao and his team for their efforts to bring this June 2010Prerna DS Construction Employees Newsletter.

    Warm Regards.

Read Between the LinesDo HR managers know how to read between the lines?A lot of prospective employees know how to talk their way through an interview. But do HRmanagers know how to read between the lines?

Why did you leave your last job? What they tell you: I felt my talents and abilities were underutilized. What they really mean: I am compressed to what ROLE I was in to actually no JOB

What are your weaknesses? What they tell you: Im a workaholic. I just dont know when to put down my work. What they really mean: I cant concentrate for more than five minutes, hate all forms of authorityand tend to fall asleep at my desk.

    Tips To

    Earn The

    Respect of

    Your Team

    1. Show RespectTo gain respect, you first must show it. People often mirror the behaviors thatthey see and experience around them - so you must 'walk the talk'. Treat yourstaff like adults, not inferiors. Be ready to listen to their questions and concernsabout their job. Invite your team's input in making decisions which affect them, and then act on it. Let them know you value their contribution.

    2. Demonstrate LeadershipStrong leadership, that's firm but fair, is required to inspire your employees totrust and follow you. Executive Coach Mark Coulson said, "Leaders who are worthyof respect have the judgment to know the right thing to do; the integrity to do it;the character to stand up to those who don't; and the courage to stop those whowon't"[4]. A word of caution: don't confuse strong leadership with fear. Adictatorial management style is a sure fire way to push your employees out the

    3. Impart VisionMark Willes, Former Chair and CEO of the US Times Mirror Company said, "Peoplewill work for money, but they will die for something they believe in deeply. Theywill give their all for a cause to which they are committed. If a leader is to lead,he or she must kindle the passion of the organization, give energy rather than takeit away, and help people feel purpose."

Employees respect leaders who give them more information than they need, rather than less.[5] Jim Collins, in his bestselling book 'Built to Last - SuccessfulHabits of Visionary Companies' suggests one way that highly successful companiesimpart vision is through the establishment and communication of a BHAG (a 'BigHairy Audacious Goal'). General Electric's BHAG, for example, was to "Become No.1 or No. 2 in every market we serve and revolutionize this company to have thespeed and agility of a small enterprise." Collins says: "A BHAG engages people - itreaches out and grabs them in the gut. It is tangible, energizing, highly focused.People "get it" right away; it takes little or no explanation". By giving employees achallenge to strive for, and focusing all efforts on the achievement of this goal, employees can gain greater respect for Management and become more engaged in

    the organizations daily activities.

    4. Be ProfessionalModel the kind of professional behavior you expect from your staff. It's often thesmall things that leave the biggest impression. Be on time every day and don'tmake a habit of leaving early. Don't belittle employees. Don't lie to them or swearat them. Be fair and impartial at all times. Don't blur personal and professionalboundaries - keep a healthy amount of distance between you and them so that youcan remain objective and not be accused of bias or favoritism. Try and avoidmaking too many personal calls at work and don't ask subordinates to do anythingthat is not work-related.[6]Although often taken for granted, these behaviors form

the basic 'rules of the game' that must be adhered to by any Manager serious aboutbeing perceived as a professional operator.

    5. Invest in Your PeopleAn ongoing Gallup study reported recently that only 26% of the working populationis fully engaged (loyal and productive), 55% are not engaged (just putting in time),and 19% are actively disengaged (unhappy and spreading theirdiscontent).[7] These results help reinforce the obvious importance of investing inyour people if you expect them to stay. Studies have conclusively shown that on-the-job training is a powerful motivator of staff. You can earn the trust andrespect of your team by developing the individual interests and talents of each

team member. Sitting down with each employee on a regular basis to talk abouttheir career development can only improve your relationship. Build trust bygradually giving them extra responsibilities or extra latitude in decision-making.

    6. Demand AccountabilityNothing saps team morale faster than a leader who allows poor performers to getaway with it without consequence. Managers who address performance issues

    Tips To

    Earn The

    Respect of

    Your Team

head on are seen as strong leaders and command greater respect.

    7. Be DirectAccording to a study conducted by the HR consulting firm Towers-Perrin, 94% ofemployees say there is a need for greater openness and candor in organizationalcommunication from leaders.[8] The same report also found that employee'spreferred mode of communication was face-to-face meetings with their manager.Use voicemail and email sparingly when sharing anything that could be perceivedas change, ambiguous or hurtful. As often as possible, communicate directly and

in person with team members around sensitive issues.

    8. Be HumanRemember that your employees have a life outside work and be prepared to beflexible when staff members go through personal hardship. The respectedmanager shows compassion, listens and makes allowances where possible. Studiesshow that workers produce more when they feel their bosses empathize with themas individuals.[9]

    9. Give RecognitionDon't take credit for something your employee has done or pass off their work or

ideas as your own. Team members will respect you if they know they can trust youto recognize and reward them for doing their job well. Conversely, they will loserespect for you if they feel you are merely using them as a stepping stone in yourown career.

    10. Get Into The Trenches Once In A WhileA common complaint from employees, especially at performance review time, isthat their manager does not know what they do. Work side by side with your staffand your perspective about their job may change, as will their perspective of you.Pitch in when you can. A little willingness to get your hands dirty will reinforceyour understanding of your employee's daily challenges and help them see you in a

    more positive light.

    Conclusion

In essence, the key to earning the respect of your staff is to treat them the way youwould like to be treated. Once you have their respect, you will benefit from their loyalty. They in turn will know you care about them and will be likely to be committed to thebusiness and to produce high quality work. It's worth remembering that if you commandrespect, people will beat a path to your door; demand obedience, and sooner or laterthey'll head for the exits.

    Orientation To Libya

In this series we will orienting you about LIBYA and its economic Power.

In this month we are discussing on LIBYA Set up.

    SET UP

Libya is currently enjoying the benefits of a growing economy, refreshed political andeconomic ties, and a new direction that stems from the governments gradual moves tostep out of its role as a distributor of wealth in favour of more limited responsibilities as aregulator and social policymaker.

Domestically, Libya has long enjoyed stability and a high level of political participation, though not through traditional representative democratic processes. Rather, thecountrys political institutions take the form of consultative bodies at the local, regionaland national levels.

The government has acted to successfully avoid the troubles of its neighbours, many of

which have been battling extremism and social unrest for decades, by encouraging opendiscourse about social issues and allowing religious freedoms. 2008 saw significantcommitments of foreign direct investment (FDI) by Italy and Russia and the resumption ofpolitical and economic ties with the US.

Libya is now among its fastest-growing markets for importing mostly energy sectorequipment, cars, agricultural goods and aircraft.

Clock is Ticking How do you react to deadlines? How would you feel if someone said "Hurryup, the clock is ticking and we've got to get this completed!"? How well do youcope with stress? Isn't it amazing to notice how radically your experience ofpassing time changes depending on the circumstances, with little correlationto the steady flow of time as shown on a clock.

Have you ever sat in a waiting room with a clock on the wall that went "tick

tock, tick tock" over and over and over again, until such time that you eitherwanted to run out of the room, or throw the clock out the window? This kindof experience is especially excruciating when you are waiting for somethingthat you really are not looking forward to, like a treatment from your dentist. In particular, when you are feeling stressed out you experience timedistortion. In some instances like when waiting for your dentist, one minute ofclock time seems to take forever. At other times when you are workingtowards a deadline, time appears to slip away without your knowing where itwent, and you are left wondering why you are accomplishing so little.

Waiting for a flight that is twenty minutes late, when that flight is bringing

your loved one back to you, is very different than getting to the Air Terminalearly with your loved one and waiting twenty minutes for the same flight totake your loved one away from you. The flight is the same, the terminus is thesame, your loved one is the same, and the time on the clock is the same, butsomehow, your emotional experience of "twenty minutes" is quite different.

It is important for each of us to understand how the fixed passage of time asmeasured by a clock, has little to do with our emotional experience of time.Rather than being under the illusion that time rules our life, we will do well torecognize that it is our emotional experience and our mindset that determineshow we relate to the ticking of the clock. Restrict your breathing and tense

your muscles and time invariably will appear to speed up. You relate to timeaccording to your expectations of what will transpire. Expect that you will besuccessful and the clock on the wall appears to offer you a bit more time.Expect the worst and you will have difficulty keeping up.

What can you do to have a healthier perspective in regard to time? The firstthing you can do is breathe slowly and deeply. When you slow down your bodyclock, the clock on the wall appears to slow down along with you. The nextthing you can do is check in with your body. If you create a feeling ofexpansion in your body, by aligning your posture and releasing your muscles, time will appear to expand somewhat as well. Furthermore, you can notice

your surroundings and extend your awareness out into the space around you. When you extend your awareness to take in the wide range of sights andsounds taking place in your local environment you will also extend yourconcept of time. Lastly, realize that with any luck, you will have tomorrow toaccomplish what you were not able to accomplish today. Every new day, brings new opportunities for appreciating your life and the people you careabout.

Lateral Thinking Puzzles, unlike most puzzles, are inexact. In a sense, they are a hybridbetween puzzles and storytelling. In each puzzle, some clues to a scenario are given, but the clues don't tell the full story. Your job is to fill in the details and complete thestory. Obviously, there is usually more than one answer to any given puzzle, but, ingeneral, only one solution is truly satisfying.

You can try solving these puzzles on your own -- that's certainly a legitimate way to goabout this -- but usually you can have more fun if you involve other people. The waythis works is, you look at the answer (maybe you want to try the puzzle on your ownfirst!), then read just the clues to your friends. Your friends must determine theanswer by asking questions about it, which you may answer only with yes, no, ordoesn't matter. You can adjust the difficulty of the puzzle by varying the initial clues, throwing in red herrings, and so forth.

The scenarios given on this page are realistic, if unlikely. The clues can all be taken atface value, although that's not to say their implications can't be misleading.

    The water crisis of DSC-Swani.

It has been a little over a month, and now we all seem to used to the random roar ofthe soldier who has silently but discretely joined the fraternity. Capt. Khanna, hadjoined as administration officer in DSC and had been rolling since then.

On the 4th of July, there was this buzz that the water supply pump of our camp, brokedown. I could read the faces of people calmly accepting that it is going to be a

    frustrating evening.

I went to my room after having my dinner, and saw these drops of water dripping fromthe tap of the basin, which is a normal phenomenon, as the taps have served their age.Without realising that there is a crisis of water in the camp, i turned on the tap andeverything seemed normal, i took a shower and was about to crash on my bed, itsuddenly occur to me that there could be a shortage of water in the morning and owingto the above i filled my bucket to the brim and went to bed. i was watching this IsraelPalestinian crisis debate on the press TV, and never realised at what time i dosed off.

Since then it has been 5th evening when i am writing this from my room, and i can seemy bucket, filled to the brim, which was never used since yesterday. This filled bucket

inspires me to write this commendation for the administrative team of DSC, who servedthe crisis, as if it were never there.I salute the right planning, right attitude, and the hard work that goes into achievingsuccess, however small or however big the scale is.

"One percent inspiration, 99 percent perspiration"Edison's definition of genius hasoften been quoted to define success as well. Even before Edison, the rigors of successwere described by painter Michelangelo thus: "If people knew how hard I had to work togain my mastery, it wouldn't seem wonderful at all."

Achieving success is almost like finding God the destination is the same, but the roadsare as varied as the seekers. All you need to do is choose your path

"Success is basically about how you can turn adverse situations in your favor."

So, focus your energies in a concentrated manner on your goal and then start perspiringfor it. The choice of the goal and the effort taken in reaching it are complementary: ifyou want to achieve something for the love of it, and not because it is the done thing,no amount of hard work would tire you. As De Bono puts it: "Successful people do oftenenjoy their work that it does not seem like work." According to a recent survey, successearned through hard work was the foremost factor responsible for a contented life.

"Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm."Behind every human effort lies a hope for success. So keen is his desire for success that

he fails to see any value in failures. But one must remember that failures are the pillarsof success. They provide us an opportunity to realize our shortcomings so that we canconstantly strive to improve ourselves.I congratulate the administration team on this effort of crisis management, and hopethey will keep up the show.
