Saint Vincent de Paul

A specific spirituality underpins our Vincen an voca-on: Vincen an spirituality, so named for our patron

St. Vincent de Paul. For Vincen ans, the key aspect of St. Vincent’s spirituality are: To love God, our Father, with the sweat of our brow and the strength of our arms; To see Christ in the poor and the poor in Christ; To share the compassionate and libera ng love

of Christ the Evangeliser and Servant of the Poor; To heed the inspira on of the Holy Spirit.

This spirituality gives life, color, and meaning to who we are and what we do. Vincen an spirituality is the founda on of our voca on, endowing it with credibil-ity, veracity, and integrity. God’s grace strengthens, supports, and energizes the prac ce of this specific spirituality.

Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organiza on, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradi on of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. Would you like to learn more or are you in need of assistance? If so, please call 630-718-2127.

Mark’s Gospel Corner

1Brown, The Birth of the Messiah, pp 367-377 and Fitzmyer, The Gospel According to Luke, I-IX, pp 372-390.

Today the Church celebrates the birth of John the Baptist. In addition to Jesus, only Mary and John the Baptist’s births are recalled and celebrated in the Liturgical Calendar. Luke’s artistry in describing side-by-side the annunciation, birth, circumcision, and naming of John the Baptist and Jesus make these chapters one of the most awe-inspiring and beautiful in all of Scripture. John’s conception and birth are described like that of Isaac’s birth to Abraham and Sarah, and Samuel’s birth to Hannah. (1 Samuel) - both were thought barren, stricken by God. Like Sampson in the Old Testament (Judges 13-16), John is filled with and led forth by the Holy Spirit (as was Jesus in Luke 4:1). In both over arching structure and small details, Luke emphasizes the fulfillment of all that God promised using Old Testament parallels and wording. Doing so places Jesus’ coming within the history of Israel, God’s chosen people, and sets the stage for the conception and birth of Jesus in fulfillment of God’s long awaited promise to ransom His people. It is in Jesus’ birth that Luke’s narrative reaches its crescendo. Luke devotes only two short verses to the birth of John the Baptist, emphasizing the circumcision and naming of John over his actual birth.1 Elizabeth’s reaction to John’s birth and those of her neighbors mirrors that of Sarah’s upon the birth of Isaac: “God has given me cause to laugh, and all who hear it will rejoice together with me” – a play on the name Isaac, “he laughs” (Gen 21:6). The angel’s prophecy to Zechariah that all would rejoice at John’s birth has been fulfilled. Moreover, the angel’s foretelling that the child would be called John is now, in an unexpected way, fulfilled. Luke presupposes that Elizabeth was unaware of this prediction and that the inspiration came to her suddenly and miraculously. Luke also portrays that Zechariah, who was both deaf and dumb, had not heard Elizabeth announce that “He will be called John.” Only then was Zechariah’s mouth opened and his tongue loosened because now all that had been foretold has been fulfilled as the angel told him: “And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens” (Lk 1:18). John’s miraculous naming adds to the wonder and astonishment, leading to the exclamation: “‘What then is this child going to be?’ for the hand of the Lord was with him” (Lk 1:66). In Zechariah’s canticle, which follows today’s Gospel, he answers that question. In contrast to John, Luke emphasizes Jesus’ birth over His circumcision. It is here that the angels will proclaim the glory of God and shepherds will find Him in a manger. Still, Gabriel’s announcement to Mary is confirmed and com-pleted at Jesus’ circumcision when Mary, like Elizabeth, names the child (as the angel had instructed her to call him), and what was hidden from the crowds is revealed by Simeon (and also Anna): “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation which you prepared in sight of all the peo-ples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel” (Lk 2: 29-32). Just as Zechariah and Eliza-beth’s neighbors wondered who John the Baptist would be, now Mary and Joseph are amazed. Like Mary, the Mother of Jesus, John the Baptist is remembered because he ushers in the birth of Jesus and is faithful to the vocation given to him by God. Despite turmoil, privation, and ultimately death because of his testimony, John remains faithful, pointing not to himself but to Jesus, the Lamb of God. Pray to John the Baptist and to Mary, that they might point us to Jesus and that in imitation of them, we will remain faithful. Zechariah and Elizabeth, Joseph and Mary, Simeon and Anna’s trust that God will fulfill all that He has promised, are models for us to trust that God will fulfill His promise of life everlasting to us, if we seek to do His will.

Pray With Us

St. Francis Chapel of Eucharistic Adoration Flame of Faith Candles

Six candles burn perpetually around the Blessed Sacrament in our St. Francis Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. The burning candles serve as a constant prayer before the Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament. Envelopes for you to have your intention remembered with one of these candles and prayed for ONE WEEK (Sunday to Sunday) are available in the Adoration Chapel. The intentions will be published in the bulletin.

Monday 9am Thursday 8am Monday 10am Friday 10am Monday 1pm Friday 12pm Wednesday 3am Saturday 10pm Wednesday 6pm

Please consider visiting with our Lord at these times. Call Barb at 630-885-1726 or [email protected].

COME AND ADORE HIM IN THE MOST HOLY SACRAMENT...

Visit our Saint Francis Adoration Chapel - Open 24/7

Sit quietly and just “be” in the presence of God. Think of a visit to the Blessed Sacrament as coming to see your best friend. Instead of talking to the Lord, try listening to what He wants to tell you.
