Dad kept an anvil in his workshop. I don’t really know why he had an anvil or how long it had been in his possession, but the anvil obviously predated my existence. Even though it was old, the anvil itself held no clues as to its life history. In its massive and completely uninteresting brown blackishness, it revealed nothing as to its previous uses before it came to live on the workbench. Some scars of use could be seen, but those minor indentations did not disclose the real nature of the hammer or tool that had been used upon it. The anvil had many purposes and had proven itself to be so useful that it became a necessary part of Dad’s possessions. We often wondered if it came from some blacksmith’s shop and whether or not horseshoes had been made and repaired upon it. If it had been used to help cowboy heroes of the old west, it now fulfilled much more humble tasks. My brothers and I used it for everything and anything. Upon it we hammered old nails into our wonderful creations made from scraps of wood. We bent countless pieces of metal over its curved top using hammers that made the anvil ring with a sound that wilted our ears and made the dogs howl in disgust. We loved to straighten old rusted nails using the flat top near the end of the anvil because those nails became our own possessions and could be used however we pleased. No matter what the project, the anvil was always there and somehow became a necessary part of accomplishing the task at hand. Of course, inevitably, the anvil had to be put to its ultimate use by boys who are growing and finding out about themselves and how they measured up to the world. Regularly in the process of working on something, the anvil would have to be lifted. It was lifted with no other real purpose in mind except that we wanted to lift it. It was lifted to see, if by chance, this time would be easi-er than the last time. We would lift it over and over again and dare any of our companions to lift it as many times as we could. The fact that we never dropped it on our toes or fingers still amazes me to this day. Dad was very particular about the use of his tools, but he never seemed to mind the use of the anvil in any of our projects. I think that he saw the anvil as being completely indestructible, but we always thought that by using the anvil we were being intro-duced to the world of real tools that could accomplish amazing tasks. Today the anvil, tomorrow the truck! The anvil still sits on Dad’s workbench in the garage at the house. It probably has not been used in a while, but I know if I went to it with a hammer and an old bent nail, it would ring with the hammer’s blows and the nail would be easily straightened. God’s presence is always a part of our lives. Like the anvil, the Lord’s strength continues unceasingly. And like the anvil, we can rely on God’s amazing love to straighten out all of the crooked parts of our lives. Thank you, Lord, for being the anvil of our days.

God Bless, Dan

What is Salkehatchie? Salkehatchie Summer Service is a pioneering servant ministry in South Carolina involving students, college age youth, adult community leaders and persons of different cultures. We work together in upgrading housing, motivating community cooperative

efforts by helping persons to help themselves, and providing all participants with opportunities for personal growth and service.

Who? Salkehatchie Summer Service participants are primarily from the South Carolina United Methodist Conference. Participants must be at least 14

years old by the beginning of the camp they attend. Adult leaders are also needed to offer guidance and support.

What? This program of the South Carolina Conference Board of Global Ministries consists of a number of work camps for United Methodist Youth in South

Carolina. During the week participants physically improve homes of needy families and reach out to these families and one another in friendship.

Where? There are over fifty camps. Camps are established where need, opportunity, personnel and facilities meet.

When? Each camp runs from Saturday to Saturday. Camps are offered from June through the end of July.

How Much? $250 per person. If you are a church member, Bethesda will cover half of your cost. Each participant must complete the online registration

and pay their registration fee. To receive a reimbursement for half of the fee, submit your request to Bethesda office.

June’s arrival signals the start to summer. With schools letting out and summer activities and jobs starting up, it is a time to relax

from school and recharge for next year. This summer brings the return of our open youth room events on Wednesdays. Just like

last year, the youth room will be open during the summer on Wednesdays from 9am - 9pm for youth and their friends to come

and hangout at. Lunch and dinner are provided for any youth who are here. And the youth are free to come and go as their

schedule through out the day allows. Last year these were a big hit and I look forward to another great summer of open youth

rooms. Also in June is this years Vacation Bible School. Last year we had a great turnout with youth volunteering and this year I

hope that remains true. Youth serving at VBS are integral to the program and its success in years past. It is also great for the

youth to get to work with and know the children better. Other than that, this summer we will have some High School and Middle

School specific events and another girls and guys night out. Those dates and events will be announced in the weekly emails.

Summer is a great time to reflect and relax and I hope all our youth get a chance to do those things while having fun.

Homebound Visitation Team Needs Visitors The Homebound Visitation Team has been busy - and growing - since we began seeing our homebound members. We started visiting 13 homebound members in March and are currently visiting 17 people twice a month. Our homebound members really appreciate their visits and this connection with the church.

As the number of people visited increases, the need for Visitation Team members also increases. Visitation Team members typically visit one to two homebound church members each month. The day and time of visits are flexible to meet the needs of both the visitor and the person being visited. The time commitment is fairly minimal but makes a huge difference in the lives of our homebound members.

This ministry has been a blessing for those we visit and, also, for our visitors! If you are interested in becoming a Homebound Visitation Team member, please contact Lee Carroll, 864-617-0980 or [email protected].

Stewardship Report Through May 26, 2019

Creation Care

Did you know that the Social Creed and Social Principles of the United Methodist Church address our responsibility to care for God’s creation? Our Social Creed states “We affirm the natural world as God’s handiwork and dedicate ourselves to its preservation, enhancement, and faithful use by humankind.”

The first of our Social Principles addresses “The Natural World: All creation is the Lord’s, and we are responsible for the ways in which we use and abuse it. Water, air, soil, minerals, energy resources, plants, animal life, and space are to be valued and conserved because they are God’s creation and not solely because they are useful to human beings. God has granted us stewardship of creation. We should meet these stewardship duties through acts of loving care and respect. Economic, political, social, and technological developments have increased our human numbers, and lengthened and enriched our lives. However, these developments have led to regional defoliation, dramatic extinction of species, massive human suffering, overpopulation, and misuse and overconsumption of natural and nonrenewable resources, particularly by industrialized societies. This continued course of action jeopardizes the natural heritage that God has entrusted to all generations. Therefore, let us recognize the responsibility of the church and its members to place a high priority on changes in economic, political, social, and technological lifestyles to support a more ecologically equitable and sustainable world leading to a higher quality of life for all of God’s creation.

The Preamble to the Social principles acknowledges “We affirm our unity in Jesus Christ while acknowledging differences in applying our faith in different cultural contexts as we live out the gospel.”

Check out the entire statement at www.umc.org/what-we-believe/the-natural-world. UMC Book of Discipline 2016.
