A bumper crop of acorns means good times for mice and that means lots of food for ticks. According to RichardS. Ostfeld, a Cary Institute scientist, there was a bumper crop of acorns in 2015. Lots of ticks therefore survivedon mice and reproduced.

Since ticks have a two-year life cycle, the number of nymph-stage ticks should be huge this spring. In areas withlots of snow cover this winter, the tick population might be mitigated, but in areas with a mild winter, the tickpopulation should be big.

Naturally, where there are ticks, there is Lyme disease. That's going to be big, too. Of course not every tick bitetransmits Lyme or any other disease but more ticks carry pathogens today than in the past.

Connecticut, whose Agricultural Experiment Station collects and studies ticks, found in May that 38 percentof collected ticks tested positive for Lyme disease, according to the Wall Street Journal. That is up from 27percent in the last five years. The deer tick can actually transmit up to seven pathogens that cause diseases inhumans, one of which is Lyme disease.

Connecticut also found that 10 percent of ticks tested positive for a pathogen that causes Babesiosis, a diseasesimilar to malaria. About 5 percent tested positive for Anaplasmosis, a serious disease that causes anemia andan increase in the heart rate. In 2009, talk show host David Letterman revealed he got the disease from aninfected tick while camping with his son.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are more than 300,000 new cases of Lyme disease everyyear, about three times the number 20 years ago.

If you spot a tick quickly, chances are you will not be infected. Ticks latch on for three to five days but a tickthat bites for only a few hours probably won't transmit an infection, according to the CDC.

He was a likable, stray border terrier who had two hobbies: He liked to travel and he liked mail bags.In particular, the dog who became known as Owney liked to sleep on mail bags and it did not matterto him if the mail bags were headed across town or across country. In the late 1800s, when dogsfrequently roamed freely, Owney became the darling mascot of the postal service and even a worldtraveler.

It all started in 1888 in Albany, NY, when the dog showed up at a post office and was adopted by thepostal workers. They noticed Owney liked to sleep on mail bags and one other thing: Owney was friendlytoward postal workers who needed to move mail bags, but he was decidedly unfriendly to non-postalworkers. The talent was a useful one as Owney traveled from one post office to another, guarding mailbags in return for food and water. On one occasion, a mail bag fell off a train and Owney stayed withthe bag until a worker came back for it. He quickly gained fame across the postal service.

An 1893 book by Cushing Marshall has this description: "The terrier 'Owney' travels from one end ofthe country to the other in the postal cars, tagged through, petted, talked to, looked out for, as abrother, almost. But sometimes, no matter what the attention, he suddenly departs for the south, theeast, or the west, and is not seen again for months."

Albany postal workers worried when Owney disappeared for months. They had a special collar madewith the address of the Albany Post Office, just so he could be identified. At the various post officeshe visited, Owney got a new tag clipped to his collar until finally he jingled loudly with every step.

He is still honored at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum in Washington, DC, where 397 ofhis medals and tags are on display, along with his preserved body.

Kent has a younger brother named Jerald, who is now retired from school administration, andlives in Santa Rosa. As a kid, Kent and his brother were tasked with being the one to pull the weedsfrom his dad’s field of sharecrop onions. He said he couldn’t stand the work at the time, but lookingback, it helped make him the person he is today, and he’s grateful to have done the job.

In 1945, Kent graduated high school, and was planning to enlist in the US Navy, when theydiscovered he had a heart murmur, disqualifying him from service. He then elected to join the Armyreserve, but by that Fall the war had ended, and Kent decided to pursue becoming a school teacher. Heand his wife, Lois, the two of them both teachers, moved from Colorado to Oregon to try and make amore livable wage. That proved to be burdensome, as the school board would not approve any raisesfor teachers due to budget shortfalls, so Kent decided to look to California for greener pastures. He andhis wife were offered jobs in a small town called Davis, and happily took the positions, with a highersalary, and the ability to purchase a house!

Kent taught at both Emerson and Holmes Junior High Schools, with the option of teaching summerschool to high school-aged students for a stipend. With a strong drive and interest in involving himselfin a variety of activities, both paid and voluntary, Kent joined the political field in Davis, serving onthe planning commission, city council, and then becoming elected the Mayor of the City of Davis from1966-68. At this post, he fathered legislation establishing the first dedicated bicycle lanes in the entireUS! Davis is well known still for its commitment to environmentally-friendly transportation and positive, progressive legislation on a huge range of other topics.

Kent spent a year on sabbatical at Harvard University in 1967, and admits that the Vietnam-eraculture there made it a challenging place to be, with so many perspectives and positions on where thecountry was headed at that time.

He and Lois had three children: Kathy, an elementary school teacher close to retirement; Laurie, aStanford graduate who was an intellectual property attorney; and Charles, a food distribution managerin Colorado.

Kent describes his favorite life experiences as being outdoors- hiking, camping, learning and teachingabout the environment, and what an important and necessary role it plays in our lives. He becameinvolved with the Sierra Club, traveling with them on adventures throughout the region, and propellinghim to become its national president from 1974-76, a position first held by the great John Muir.

Kent has enjoyed exploring Yosemite, Lassen, New Zealand, Eastern Europe, Patagonia, Chile, andAustralia with Lois by his side, and has published a book titled: A Long, Long Trail- Accounting formy Years. They spent time in Poland teaching conversational English, and time with students inmonth-long wilderness trips to wondrous locations. He describes himself as a hard worker, reader, andhiker, and says with a smile that the best thing for him and his wife about living at Carlton is, “We don’thave to cook!”

Kent GillKent Gill was born on February 17, 1928, to parents Charles and Lena, in

Montrose, Colorado, in the western side of the state. His mother taught school, and his father was a day laborer, who took on many different jobs, includingsplitting spruce trees with an axe to make railroad ties for the Rio GrandeRailroad. During some of the harsher winters, crews had to drag the ties throughthe snow to be laid on the right-of-way. His father also trapped beaver, whichwas and is still illegal, but he made enough money from it to purchase a new1928 Chevrolet. He later worked for the Fish and Game Department, butpromised to cease those practices!
