This is a time to reflect on the many accomplishments rendered by our school community and to give thanks for another successful year. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the “All Hands On Deck” approach adopted by our students, staff, OLW CSPC, and parent community, as we are a school that prides itself in being stronger due to the collective effort of everyone. There are simply too many instances where unconditional assistance has been the norm in terms of assistance during fundraisers, field trips, parent workshops, the nutrition program, special events for the school, liturgical celebrations, theme days, sporting, extracurricular and academic events to name just a few. Thank you to Father Coyle and Annunciation Parish for an extra special year in which our school community feels an even stronger, healthier connection to our affiliated Parish and all of the great work that takes place within and beyond! An ethos of friendship, or as we call lamitié has been evident from start to finish this year in all that we have accomplished, and we look forward to what the next phase of TCDSBs pastoral plan, “The Year of the School” brings in 2017-2018. Congratulations to our Grade 8 students who are moving on to the next important chapter of their educational and formative journeys, and we wish them every success in their chosen secondary school placements. Last but not least, we wish our beloved head custodian, Mr. J. Catholic Education Week April 30th-May 5th,

2017 Parish and School Connection https://vimeo.com/212048177

As part of the larger Catholic education week with this year’s theme being: Walking Forward Together, the St. Vincent de Paul Society visited with students in Grades 5 and 6. Mr. Cooke and Ms. Goveas spoke about their ministry, specifically the Mary Grove Camp for students who are less fortunate. This camp operates under the auspices of Mary Grove, Girls and Boys camp Ozanam. Students learned about how they can help St. Vincent de Paul through donations placed in the small box at the back of their parishes. They also learned that the St. Vincent de Paul Society is composed of 99% volunteers, with no restrictions, working in pairs to help all people, non-denominational, 80 plus strong and growing!

OLW’S TESSELLATION

STORY:TOGETHER WITH ONE VOICE PROJECT

Annotated by Grade 8 students: Joshua A. and Daniel D.

The Fleur de Lys is the Francophone symbol, and it was included in our design because we are proud to have a French Immersion Ethos. The Canadian Flag was included because we are so lucky to live in a country like this, where we enjoy freedom. The school logo (L’amitié or friendship), the school name and the year 1959 were also included as they represent us as a community and how long we’ve been around. The two intersecting swords and the crown represent our Canadian Army and how we are so lucky to live in a country of peace because of the many people fighting for us. The cross was included because we are very religious and proud to be Catholic.

Stewardship in Action: The

Living Garden

Students in Mme. Thokoly’s Grade 3 class and their science teacher, Monsieur Etienne, took to the northern reaches of the school grounds, in particular the unused and potentially very productive space close to the JK/SK greenspace and storage area. Using two above ground garden planters, a variety of soils, water and a little tender loving care, Our Lady of Wisdom’s herb garden is born. It is our hope that through the garden, students will continue to realize their full potential as stewards of the Earth by caring for plant life, as they watch thyme, parsley, and basil grow.

Passages Canada Speaker: Ms. Simmone Park/Asian Heritage

Thank you to Ms. Simmone Park for sharing her courageous story of growing up as a Canadian of South Korean heritage and inspiring and equipping our students to face racism and discrimination head on. “Simmone is a consultant, strategist, coach, speaker and optimist for humanity. She studied International Business in Canada and Germany, with a focus on cross-cultural communication and negotiation and is currently completing courses with Philanthropy University, powered by Berkeley-Haas. She has lived, worked, and/or studied in 10 countries to date. A lover of giving back, Simmone has helped to source supplies and physically build homes, schools, and sustainable communities in Trinidad & Tobago, Guatemala, El Salvador, Kenya, and Panama.” Students in Grades 4-6 listened and learned from Simmone’s message to stop reciprocating hate with hate and to get to know each other and learn about and celebrate each other’s cultural identity. She chronicled her own experience with racism at 11 years of age in the area of Scarborough known as the “Guild.” Students interacted with Simmone and are better prepared to fight the good fight understanding that they can all be agents of change and that good can come from bad.

Crowning of Mary Celebration-May 10th- 9:30 a.m.

Rosary: (Noun)

A series of prayers, usually consisting of 15 decades of aves, each decade being preceded by a paternoster and followed by a Gloria Patri, one of the mysteries or events in the life of Christ or the Virgin Mary being recalled at each decade.

In two separate sessions for the primary and then junior/intermediate grades, students took part in this recognition of Mary as Queen of Heaven through prayer, active Rosary participation and petition. Thank you once again to Mrs. Morin and Mrs. Mendoza and their colleagues from the Rosary Apostolate to be an important influence on students’ Catholic faith formation!

Annual Compost Giveaway 2017

Lynda Bowerman, Sr. Constituency Assistant to Councillor Norm Kelly has organized through the school, the annual Compost giveaway day on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 9 a.m. All community members and families of OLW students are welcome to receive this generation donation of compost.

Beading Buds Rosary Workshop for our Grade 2 Students Receiving the Sacrament of First Communion

It was a special day in the neighbourhood for the students in Monsieur Henri’s Grade 1/2 and Mme. Suzan’s Grade 2 classes. The students gladly took on the challenge of crafting their very own functional keepsake: a rosary bracelet to commemorate the sacrament of Holy First Communion. Thanks to Esther Czyrski from Beading Buds Inc., students found much joy as they invested their time in creating a bracelet with which they can regularly engage in prayerful communication with the Trinity and Mother Mary. It remains our hope that students continue to wear and cherish the glass pearl and crystal rosary bracelets and wood and glass bead rosary bracelets for many years to come.

Curriculum Corner

What happens when the world of mathematical probability and proportional reasoning and baseball collide? Collaborative problem

solving, excitement and the thirst to justify a math solution happen. That’s what! Students in the Grade 7 class of Mlle. Caroline and the Grade 6 class of Mrs. Robertson, continue to hone their ability to think aloud and justify themselves mathematically, as they tackle multi layered math problems that are grounded in familiar lived

experiences. We applaud their tenacity and their teachers’ encouragement of academic risk taking!

Camp Olympia Student Leadership Camp

The mission: to maximize leadership potential, get involved, meet peers from other schools and have fun! Our Grade 7 students zip lined their way to this student leadership development opportunity from May 3-5, 2017 known as Camp Olympia. Multiple student testimony confirms the value added reality of this outing, as students took part in interactive team building and secondary skills workshops, building trust, learning to take intellectual risk and challenge themselves, for example, in activities such as the “Cube” requiring the manipulation of pegs and guidance from one end of a course to the other. Confidence building and spiritual awareness were also communicated as being important results of this experience.

Canada 150th Themed “Wisdom’s Got Talent” Performance/SK Graduation Event

Students from Grades 3 to 8 are in the midst of preparing for an all-out arts infused spectacle, known as “Wisdom’s Got Talent.” This year’s auditions and participant hopefuls are composed of an impressive assortment of original rap/spoken word, dance, song, drama, and music (vocal and instrumental), all linked to a common purpose, celebrating our great nation of Canada. Thank you to the many judges of teaching staff (Mlle. O, Mlle. Belanger, Mlle. Camellia) and our enthusiastic and methodical grade 8 student leaders who are assisting in the auditions, looking at criteria which include: projection, articulation, relation to the Canada theme, poise, discipline specific skillsets, just to name a few. We are very much looking forward to celebrating the diverse talents of our school community during a school level performance on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 1 p.m. for parents/guardians of participating students and SK families. Creature Quest’s Duck hatchling program at OLW…

The 3 duck hatchling kits have arrived from Creature Quest. Teachers and students continue to be amazed at chronicling the different stages of the life inside the eggs, candling, observing, waiting and hoping…

The French Year 1 and Year 2 classes are involved in a variety of inquiry based visual arts, science, French oral language and numeracy activities as they journey with the developing embryos, learn about bird life cycles and tend to the incubator that serves as home, waiting for the hatchlings to pip.

Makey Makey Arrives at Our Lady of Wisdom CES

On May 17th, 2017, M. Bruno and Grade 7 students took part in the Makey Makey workshop. An interest in learning coding was the initial springboard for the school’s application to this project. The Makey Makey will introduced into curriculum or as a co-curricular activity.

Makey Makey is an electronic invention kit that allows people of all ages to use everyday objects and combine them with the internet. Makey Makey allows one to take a conductive material and turn that material into a keyboard control. Some of the controls that Makey Makey allows us to use are the spacebar, left click of the mouse, and the arrow keys.

Why is it so popular? Because the hardware is affordable, it’s easy to learn and it teaches students important logic and coding skills.

Can You Math Challenge?

During the week of May 1st, 2017, Students in the Grade 4 classes of Mme. Yango, Mlle. Falsetti and the Grade 6 class of Mrs.

SUN-SENSE: The summer heat will soon be upon us. Please ensure your children are dressed appropriately for the warmer weather and in a manner appropriate for a Catholic School environment. We kindly ask that students dress in accordance to the Our Lady of Wisdom CES Dress Code. Students are encouraged to wear a hat outside at recess. Students must apply their own sunscreen and are encouraged to do so at home before leaving for school in the morning. Teachers are not allowed to apply sunscreen for students. It is also important that your children come to school with plenty of water/liquids to hydrate themselves throughout the day. Bottles may be filled up at our water bottle filling station on the ground level. Sunscreen, sun visors, hats, sunglasses, and light weight clothing are also recommended for those hot sunny days. We will monitor the air quality and smog conditions daily and adjust length of outdoor play and activity accordingly. Students must not resort to using water bottles for water games or throwing water at each other, since this poses a safety risk.

Paul Davis and Online Safety

Technologist, Mr. Paul Davis, of TED X St. Mary’s fame and renowned for his work with agencies like the Department of national Defense, the Ontario Provincial Police and Canada Border services, visited with students from grades 4-6 and 7-8. The purpose of his visit was to educate, increase social responsibility and change actual behaviour directly related to students’ use of social network applications and online activity. Students had the opportunity to engage in a lot of introspection about their online activity, as Paul quickly assessed their level of online engagement, at times, candidly asking students who have smartphone devices why they have them and whether they and their parents are actually aware of the parameters, rules and age limits regarding social network applications. Paul also explained to students in great detail how digital trails are left and how they can be used, citing the number of digital trails a simple email can leave. Paul asked many questions which exposed significant gaps in students’ understanding of how hidden links can activate RATs (Remote Access Trojans), how Internet Service Providers keep detailed logs of students’ web activity, an overview of cyberbullying and its various manifestations, as well as, confirming what constitutes safe gaming, such as, using private servers and using white lists with people who they know. Paul left the students with the simple task of communicating what they learned about the rules of tech and what changes they will implement in their own online behaviours. We look forward to having Mr. Davis share his wisdom with our parent community during this year's Pro Grant workshop for 2017!

Our Lady of Wisdom CSPC Meeting in June 2017

Please join us for our final Catholic School Parent Council meeting which will be taking place on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. in the library on the second floor.

Students from JK/SK to Grade 8 will have the opportunity to engage in safe and fun outdoor activities which promote active participation and healthy living. A complimentary hot dog lunch will be provided, along with drink. Thank you to Mrs. Shirley and her helpers, as well as, the teachers involved in making this event an enjoyable one for the kids.

Class Promotion for 2017-2018

The process for the formation of classes for September 2017 will soon begin. Creating the best possible and most functional class groupings is our goal at OLW and a task that requires considerable thought, consideration, consultation and careful planning. Our aim is to establish balanced classrooms. These classes will consist of students who will work well together, thereby enriching each other’s learning experiences. In forming classes, including combined grades, we will be considering the following:

o Learning styles o Gender balance (male/female ratios) o Balanced academic abilities within each class o Social, emotional, and physical needs of the students o Student experience in combined classes o Behavioural needs o Special education needs o General dynamics within the class

School Cashless Online Payment Coming to all TCDSB Schools

The Board of Trustees have approved the implementation of new system for cashless online payment of school-related activities, goods and services across the TCDSB. Once the program is fully implemented by February 2018, all parents, staff and students will have the option to make secure payments online by credit card and receive a receipt.

The new online payment system provides the following benefits:

• A convenient fee payment option that saves time

• Reduces paper

• Student safety - no more need to send cash or cheques to school

• A quick and easy to register. (It takes less than 5 minutes)

The Board is currently “Beta testing” the new cashless online payment application in selected TCDSB schools. More details and information regarding when the payment system will be introduced in our school will be provided to parents as soon as it is available.

Year of the Parish

Capping off the Year of the Parish, and Catholic Education Week, the Toronto Catholic District School celebrated Parish Family Day on Friday, May 5th. This culminating celebration featured a Mass of celebration, and a showcase of student artwork, written work (poetry and stories), original music and video tributes that spoke to the special bonds that have developed between our school communities and their parishes, pastors, sisters and others in their parish community.

To see all the wonderful submissions from our schools, see https://www.tcdsb.org/Board/NurturingOurCatholicCommunity/YearoftheParish/PFDShowcaseSubmissions/Pages/default.aspx

The event truly brought to life our pastoral plan--Together With One Voice--Family, Parish and School. Throughout the year, we have seen the collaboration among our schools and our parishes, and witnessed many examples of partnership, celebration, outreach and involvement.

2017 Canada Day Celebrations

• With the celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, this Canada Day is truly extra special. As we have done in the past, schools are encouraged to celebrate Canada Day a few days early by joining in our red and white spirit day on June 29th, and gathering as a school community to sing the national anthem together at 9:30 a.m.

• TCDSB is in the process of creating a commemorative CD featuring 10 renditions of our national anthem as performed by TCDSB students. To view the more than 50 submissions from schools across the board, see: https://www.tcdsb.org/affiliates/Canada150/VideoContent/Pages/Music-Video-Submissions.aspx Students who have an artistic flair are invited to consider submitting a CD cover design by no later than June 16, 2017. Get all the details online here: https://www.tcdsb.org/affiliates/Canada150/VideoContent/Pages/CD-Cover-Design.aspx

Secondary School Admissions Policy Changes

Thank you to everyone who participate in the consultation regarding the proposed changes to the high school admissions policy. The online survey has now closed. A report will go before the Board in June 2017.

Interested in Parent Involvement?

Want to Help Others Become More Engaged in Catholic Education?

The Toronto Catholic Parent Involvement Committee is a provincially mandated and funded committee, which supports student achievement through increased parent involvement. Members of CPIC work locally within their own wards, and also provide information and advice on parent engagement to the school board. The committee strategizes and plans initiatives and events that promote and facilitate parent engagement, and helps parents to support their children’s learning at home and/or at school. Toronto CPIC members are volunteer parents/guardians, who bring forward information and ideas from their own wards, and relay important decisions and important information from the central table back to the parents in their area.

If this sounds of interest, consider running for election in the fall of 2017.

Don’t have the time to serve on a committee? Consider nominating someone for the committee, and remember to come out and vote for your CPIC representative. Visit www.tcdsb.org soon for detailed election information.
