At 15 years of age, Megan Johnson was diagnosed with scoliosis, a symptom of Friedreich’s Ataxia. By age 20, the condition, which causes progressive damage to the nervous system, required her to use a wheelchair for mobility. Working to gain independence while remaining optimistic, she enrolled in Palm Beach State College after graduating from high school in 2008. The progression of her condition allowed her to attend classes for just one year. Undeterred, she turned to Gulfstream Goodwill Industries’ Supported Employment Program for assistance and was able to gain employment as a cashier at our Gulfstream Superstore in West Palm Beach. Now a cashier, Megan is unfailingly positive, outgoing and helpful to the store’s customers. Coupled with her strong work ethic, she draws rave reviews from colleagues and customers alike. Because of her positive attitude, unselfish service and strong self-reliance, Megan is Goodwill Industries International’s 2017 recipient of the Edward J. Helms Award for Graduate Staff. “Megan epitomizes the spirit of this award on a daily basis,” said President and CEO Marvin Tanck. “Megan exemplifies the values of unselfish service, faith, and a strong work ethic, and fosters self-reliance in her words, actions and deeds.” The Edgar J. Helms Award for Graduate Staff honors a current Goodwill employee who is a past recipient of Goodwill services and who best exemplifies Goodwill’s mission of service to others. Megan says she takes great pride in being able to have a job with Goodwill, which provides balance as well as socialization and a steady paycheck. “It’s just hard to put into words how great it feels to be able to be independent … and pay your own bills,” she said in describing her job. Megan received her award at Goodwill Industries International’s Delegate Assembly in Louisville, KY, during a recognition lunch June 26. The Edgar J. Nautical-themed Pop-Up Boutique Shopsets sail in support of Lighthouse event

The deck of Jupiter’s The Beach House Island Bistro and Tiki Bar was transformed into a Pop-Up Boutique with almost anything “under the sea” for purchase Thursday, June 15. The Pop-Up Boutique nearly stole the show with its impressive display of nautical-themed items during the Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches’ Captains’ Party -- an event related to the organization’s annual Lighthouse Ladies KDW Fishing Tournament fundraising event.South District Manager Bettye Perrine worked her magic with the generous donations provided by all retail stores, and with assistance from Embassy Manager Diana Whipple, Palm Beach Gardens Boutique and Vintage Shoppe Manager Francisco Rios, and Boutique Room staff. The walls, rafters, railings and deck floor were filled to the gills with pirate’s booty … a true treasure chest of all things nautical. Jewelry, clothing, shoes, home décor, paintings, lamps and even a chandelier encrusted with exotic shells were all beautifully displayed for the savvy customer angling for a great catch.Cheers to all on board for this great team effort!

(Left to right) Francisco, Bettye, Pam Collins and Diana are surrounded by images of the creative boutique display they worked hard to set up.

What is a tickler file?A tickler file, or 43 Folders System, is a collection of date-labeled file folders organized in a way that allows time-sensitive documents to be filed according to the future date on which each document needs action. The organizer would act on the documents in the folder according to the time priority. Tickler files can be tangible or electronic. They are a great way to stay organized.

Creating tables in Word

Tables are a great way for you to organize your information. Tables are arrangements of information in columns and rows. You can input information in tables and include this in your documents. For example, in Microsoft Word, here is how you can insert a table.

1. From the Insert tab, click the Table button in the Tables group.2. You will notice that if you hover your mouse over the mini grid area, you can choose how many rows and columns you want in your table. As you do this, the live preview of your table will appear in the document before you actually make your final choice.3. Once you’ve determine your table size, select it by clicking the area you have highlighted on the grid and the table will be displayed in your document.4. You can also choose to select Insert Table from the Table drop-down menu. When you do this, the Insert Table dialogue box will appear (as pictured to the right). In this box, you can make your selections for the number of columns and rows, and fitting options. Click okay when you’re done.5. In addition, you have the option to Draw a Table into your document, Convert Text to Table (only works with selected text), insert an Excel Spreadsheet or use Quick Tables (Word’s preformatted tables).

When you insert a table into a document, you will get a contextual tab on the Ribbon, titled Table Tools, which gives you further formatting options for your table. Look at this tab as a toolkit to help you effectively work with your table.

Safety coaching

Safest locationof the monthCongratulations to the Stuart Store and Donation Center for being incident free!

Report Theft:It’s the right thing to do.There is up to a $200 reward for any employee who provides information leading to the successful conclusion of identifying internal or external theft.

Our agency has increased camera and human visual surveillance. Participants and accessories of theft will be arrested and prosecuted through local authorities.

Theft directly impacts our mission!

Wouldn’t you like to make a difference? Ethics is your responsibility. Fuel our mission by minimizing theft!

If you observe employees doing the wrong thing, report anonymously by calling toll-free (800) 398-1496.

Supervisors and managers often avoid giving feedback, especially about safety performance, because they see it as unnecessary, time-intensive or negative. Assuming employees are working as safely as they can under the circumstances, they do not encourage improvement in employees’ safety behaviors.

This lack of coaching misses a huge opportunity. Experts agree one of the best ways to retain talented employees is to give your best employees recognition. This includes coaching all your employees to perform better in all aspects of their jobs, including safety. Also, contrary to traditional management styles that emphasize discipline, positive reinforcement needs to be a major part of the safety coaching process.

Most employees say they do not get enough performance-related feedback. Coaching raises safety performance, productivity and morale.

Behavior-based safetyAppropriate coaching is critical to behavior-based safety (BBS). Behavior-based safety is a systematic way to promote safety in the workplace. It clearly defines a set of safe behaviors and work practices that reduce employees’ risk for injuries and then reinforces them consistently. The result is that these behaviors occur more frequently than at-risk behaviors.

The goals of a behavior-based safety program:•Reducing at-risk behaviors to a near-zero level•Creating a process that clearly defines a set of safe behaviors and work practices that reduce employees’ risk for injuries•Providing a way to consistently identify and reinforce safe work practices•Recognizing favorable behaviors•Correcting unfavorable behaviors when needed via coaching•Problem-solving to improve work practices•Improved communication between management and employees by allowing employee participation in the safety coaching process, and mutually identifying and sharing improvements to be made
