Course Description

Language Acquisition Through Motor Planning (LAMP) is an augmentative alternative communication (AAC) approach designed to give individuals who are non-verbal or have limited verbal abilities a method of inde-pendently and spontaneously expressing themselves through the use of a voice output communication de-vice. LAMP was initially developed to give non-verbal individuals with autism a means of communication but can be adapted to benefit individuals with a variety of disabilities. The components of LAMP address the fea-tures and vocabulary available on the device as well as the method of teaching communication while taking

into account the individual’s sensory needs. Topics to be covered include:

The 5 components of LAMP: readiness to learn, joint engagement, and pair- ing a unique and consistent motor plan with auditory output and a natural response. ► The role of motor learning in language development and AAC fluency ► Device features that support implementation

► Choosing and teaching vocabulary

► Introduction to the Words for Life AAC iPad

app and vocabulary file for PRC devices

As Founders of a licensed not-for-profit nursing center, we are blessed to be able carry out

our mission in a community that truly cares about the smallest, weakest and sickest children.

Providing pediatric nursing care and therapies to medically fragile children requires an unlimited

amount of financial resources. Shortages in funding and scholarship children are common. Our

community partners are people and corporations who have heard about the PATCHES mission

and have stepped forward to help.

In 2005 after months of long hours and hard work our first pediatric nursing center opened its

doors on N. Krome Avenue in Homestead. After outgrowing the space, we relocated in May

2008 to S. Krome Avenue in Florida City. Due to a tremendous need for services we opened

second center in Ft. Pierce, Florida.

The need to provide cost effective pediatric nursing care and therapies continues to

grow. Our Florida City center has outgrown our space with no ability to expand. With the help

of the management at Orange Blossom Mall, we have a new home in Ft. Pierce where we can pro-

vide care for up to 85 children.

Community support truly matters in the lives of PATCHES and our children. Whether the sup-

port comes in the form of baby wipes, supplies, Gift Cards, or monetary donations…every single

donation matters.

Each of our communities have come together and shared in our mission of caring for the sick

and fragile children in our areas. Because of the “love of a good community” we have been able

to help those who can’t help themselves. The need to provide quality nursing care and therapies

for the children in our areas isn’t going to end….the need is growing. We know that with your

continued prayers, friendship and support we can make a difference.

PATCHES wants to thank Our Special Communities for all they’ve done to help us help those

who need us the most. We couldn’t do it with you.

“Ribbon Cutting Event” at Ft. Pierce PATCHES“Ribbon Cutting Event” at Ft. Pierce PATCHES“Ribbon Cutting Event” at Ft. Pierce PATCHES“Ribbon Cutting Event” at Ft. Pierce PATCHES The morning started with wind gusts and thunder storms through out the state of Florida but it didn’t put a damper on the Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting organized by Diana Gonzalez, Community Liaison at the Ft. Pierce PATCHES nursing center. They planned on a large crowd and that is what they got. The community came out to visit the non-profit pediatric nursing center to see for themselves what PATCHES is all about. They saw the beautiful new center located in the Orange Blossom Business Center. Visitors spoke with Joanie Ippolito-Founder, Gail Stewart-DON and many of the nurses, therapists and staff members about the nursing care and therapies that the center provides. Visitors enjoyed a wonderful continental breakfast while touring the center. We would like to thank All In Fun Party Rentals, Silver Platter Catering, Organo Gold and

Marisol Photography. We are forever grateful for your generosity.

The Keiser University Nurses Association organized a 4 day Eat 4 PATCHES at their local Chili’s Restaurant with Chili’s donating 10%. The student nurses from Keiser Uni-versity come to both PATCHES locations to do their pediat-ric clinical rotations. The students work side by side with our nurses learning how to provide nursing care to medically complex children. We are thankful to Keiser for organizing

this Eat 4 PATCHES Event.

Many of the PATCHES Team along with families and children from the nursing center had a great evening cheering the Port St. Lucie Mets on as they were all invited for an evening of
