THE NEW OAK TREE

Just a couple of years ago Don Murray,

“Dancing Don”, bought the Old Mill property on Trim

Road and set up his beautiful hardwood furniture

store. From the age of 12, when he made his first cof-

fee table, Don has always been keen on furniture.

And when anyone takes a walk through this amazing

store, filled with such high quality hand crafted piec-

es, one can’t help to feel and see the beauty of the

pieces on display.

If you are lucky enough to get Don as your

salesman, he will convince you to redecorate and to

make every piece of furniture fit cosily into your

home.

Don came to Navan because John Morgan, a

local fellow, convinced Don that a Navan store had

great potential. After getting in touch with Ted Gul-

liver, the former owner of this property, they talked

and “voilà”! The restaurant is gone and now we have

a wonderful furniture Store. Don travels all across

Canada promoting his chain of stores. One is located

in Cochrane, Alberta, while the other is in Pembroke,

Ontario. Navan remains his flag ship store.

With proceeds from store sales Don supports

various clubs and causes. The Navan Lions Club and

Curling Club as well as the Navan Women’s Institute

and some local youth sports groups have benefitted

from his generosity.

Don is a happy camper. He loves his job, en-

joys the challenges, and relishes travelling and deal-

ing with the public. He has an understanding partner

and keeps busy making prize winning wine in his

spare time. “Always have a reason to get up in the

morning “, is his secret to a long happy life. I also think

his sip of cognac every so often helps!!

RECORD SNOWFALL IN NAVAN!!

Now that I've got your

attention....Navan has-

n't had an outdoor

skating rink for the past

few years. Our goal is

to see Navan youth

and families benefit

from an outdoor skat-

ing rink for the 2012-

2013 winter season and

for years to come. Why

talk about it now when

the cold wheather

seems so far away?

The idea of a winter

wonderland has been

brought to our attention

and the sooner we get

started on the idea, the

more chances we have of having part of that plan

come to life by next winter for our community to en-

joy. We are therefore looking to form a committee of

volunteers that would be interested in participating in

this project. Should you be interested in being a part

of this ''cool'' committee, please contact me at 613-

835-2984 or at [email protected].

“Margaret's replacement ... very big shoes to fill!!

Hi! My name is Debbie Newton and I am going to be

the new Administration Support for the Navan Fair

Board. I grew up on a dairy farm outside of Vankleek

Hill. My family is still involved with the local fair. I

lived in Navan for seven years, moved to Orleans then

three years ago we moved to Bourget. I have just re-

tired after 36 years as a goverment employee at the

Department of National Defence. I have been an ac-

tive member of the Navan Curling Club since 1993,

where I was the secretary during the 1994-96 sea-

sons. In the past years we have volunteered ei-

ther serving or selling tickets at the Beer Garden dur-

ing the fair. I will do my best to fill Margaret’s shoes

and hope to meet you all during the fair.

and facebook Michael O Meara

Willard McWilliams came across this in his travels and

thought it would be great to share with you all.

“NINE FAMOUS IRISHMEN” In the young Irish disorders, in Ireland in 1848 the

following nine men were captured, tried and convicted of

treason against Her Majesty, the Queen, and were sen-

tenced to death. John Mitchell, Morris Lyene, Pat Donahue,

Thomas McGee, Charles Duffy, Tomas Meagher, Richard

O’Gorman, Terrence McManus and Michael Ireland.

Before passing sentence, the judge asked if there was any-

thing that anyone wished to say. Meagher, speaking for all,

said:

“My lord, this is our first offense, but not our last. If

you will be easy with us this once, we promise, on our work

as gentlemen, to try to do better next time. And next time-

sure we won’t be fools to get caught.”

Thereupon the indignant judge sentenced them all to be

hanged by the neck until dead and drawn and quartered.

Passionate protest from the entire world forced Queen Vic-

toria to commute the sentence to transportation for life to far

away wild Australia. In 1874, word reached the astounded

Queen Victoria on the success of some of the men who had

been transported 25 years before.

This is what was uncovered:

- Sir Charles Duffy had been elected Prime Minister of

Australia.

- Thomas Francis Meagher, Governor of Montana

- Terrence McManus, Brigadier-General, United States

Army

- Patrick Donahue, Brigadier-General, United States Ar-

my

- Richard O’Gorman, Governor General of Newfound-

land

- Morris Lyene and Michael Ireland were Attorney Gen-

eral of Australia

- Thomas D’Arcy McGee, Member of Parliament, Mon-

treal Minister of Agriculture and President Council, Do-

minion of Canada

- John Mitchell, prominent New York Politician. This man

was the father of John Purroy Mitchell, Mayor of New

York City at the outbreak of World War I.

BILLOTING – We have received offers of 9 home for

billeting which is wonderful but if anyone is interested

in opening your homes to some of these visitors (1 or

2) a few more would be great.

We will be keeping them pretty busy so just the com-

forts of a room locally would be wonderful. Anyone

interested please send and email to marga-

[email protected] with your name, address and

number.

The Therapeutic Clown Program at CHEO A member of the Child Life Specialists’

team, Mollypenny works as a Therapeutic Clown

to assist children, youth and their families cope

with the stress of illness, injury and having to stay

in the hospital. This program has been in existence since

September 2001, and although it was originally

funded by Therapeutic Clowns of Canada, it is

now funded by anonymous donors. Laughter and play are important aspects

of physical, social and emotional development

and recovery. Children who face health altering

challenges respond to opportunities that create

an environment of playfulness and moments that

alter the sterile view of the hospital. Room to room, visits provide healing

laughter, a caring attitude, respect, encourage-

ment, comedy, a little magic and red nose trans-

plants! It is not necessarily about the traditional

tricks of the trade such as fancy magic tools, but

rather the energies that we all possess inside us

like listening, intuition, sensitivity, emotional crea-

tivity, and more. In her previous career, Mollypenny was a

nurse who worked in the operating room (OR).

She now works as a Therapeutic Clown, every

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. For more information, please visit: http://

Navan2Navan Twinning Project The Navan Twinning Project is an initiative

to form an ongoing connection between Navan,

Ireland, (who we were named after) and Navan,

Ontario. A delegation went to Navan, Ireland in

2011 and was graciously received by council,

the Shamrock Committee and residents of

Navan, County Meath. In August this year over 40 musicians and

friends are traveling to Navan to walk in the foot-

steps of Michael O’Meara, who named our vil-

lage back in 1861. They will also be performing

on Sunday under the Domes and mingling with

our residents.

Some of the funds from the Strawberry So-

cial will be used to help support the many activi-

ties the committee have planned for them along

with a memento to remember their visit.

WE NEED YOUR HELP In 2009, Louise and I, Charles-Henri, have set-

tled with our family in a property located on what use

to be Mr. and Mrs. Savage’s farm land. Since our arri-

val, we have been looking in various places to find

pictures of the property before it was purchased by

Talos Construction LTD. They have built several homes

and had the main street – Henn Street – was named

on behalf of Mr. Walter Henn.

Today, we are turning to the Navanites to help

us find pictures of what the property used to be with

the farm house and its buildings. We would like to

borrow the pictures temporarily in order to be able to

scan them for our project.

Please call Charles or Louise at 613-429-0166.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

THE 231 AND PRESTO

I am pleased to share good news with the resi-

dents of Navan with regard to Transit. Effective July 1,

riders taking the 231 will no longer pay more to take

the bus than their suburban neighbours. Beginning in

July, rural pass holders will pay the express rate which

will be $119 per month instead of $145. This change

will save riders $312 per year. A single ride will cost

$4.00 if using the new Presto card or $4.65 paying

cash. 3 tickets will be needed instead of 4. Currently

riders pay $5.25 for a cash fare.

200,000 Presto cards will be available free be-

tween June 10th and October 31st. Residents can or-

der the card online at Prestocard.ca or pick one up at

the City of Ottawa Client Service Centre at 255 Cen-

trum or the Cumberland branch of the Ottawa Public

Library.

Presto cards will be transferable and can be

shared amongst family members. A photo card will

no longer be required and it will be easier to load the

card. Those using the current Ecopass will see pricing

change effective July 1 to match other monthly pass-

es - the current discount will no longer be available.

Ecopass users who switch to Presto will find the same

convenience they enjoyed with Ecopass, such as au-

to-renewal and remote payment. Plus, with PRESTO

there is no need for a photo, you can share your card

with another person, and you can choose to switch

from monthly payments to pay-per ride any time you

wish, saving money in months when you don’t ride

every day.
