Editor’s Note:
We thought you’d like to see what our hard-
working treasurer actually does!!!
Deadlines, deadlines, deadlines!! It
seems like my life is all about deadlines!! Dead-
lines for entries are something we all deal with,
especially this time of year. If we don’t make the
entry closing date there are many possibilities ….
we may not get into the show or at the very least,
it will cost us more for a post-entry.
But my life is filled with so many more
deadlines. From an accounting standpoint, I deal
with individual, corporate, partnership, estate and
non-profit deadlines not to mention monthly and
quarterly due dates! If I don’t file extensions or
meet the deadline, our ever-so-friendly IRS is
quick to impose a penalty.
VADA/Nova has quite a few tax dead-
lines to meet. In January, we have to file our
1099s for our contract labor. Think judges, EMTs,
vets, show secretaries, managers, etc. Then May
15th is our big deadline: The due date of our 990,
or our Not-for-Profit Organization Return. Even
though this is an information only return, the IRS
does not take it lightly. The volume of infor-
mation required is quite extensive and generally
takes quite some time to compile. All general
ledger information must be input into the
computer (income and expenses, correctly
categorized!!) and then my trusty accounting
program spits out an income statement and a
balance sheet. After a few accounting adjust-
ments, I then get to put that information onto the
990.
VADA/Nova has 3 licensed performance
shows, 2 Breed shows and at least six schooling
shows a year, along with membership dues to
account for. After each licensed show, I compile
a very basic income statement that tells us if we
made money or lost money! Our organization has
been so fortunate not to have been hard hit by our
tough economic times in that we have had our
shows nicely filled. I truly believe that our
beloved and fantastic volunteers are majorly
responsible for this!
If you ever have a fit of insomnia
and want to insure a good night’s sleep, I
invite you to one of our board meetings after a
licensed show & I can give you a copy of our
Profit & Loss Statement for that show!
Our schooling shows do well also;
our much-appreciated schooling show
managers fill out an income statement of sorts
that tells us how we did financially on that
particular show.
Indeed, while all this accounting and
financial mumbo-jumbo may be boring you to
tears, make no mistake: I take VADA/Nova’s
finances very seriously and feel honored to
hold the position of treasurer! Not a deadline
will get by me!!
Did I make the May 15th deadline for
VADA/Nova’s Not-for-Profit Organization
Return this year? You betcha…with an
extension!!

PRELIMINARY SUMMARY MINUTES –
VADA/Nova Board Meeting
May 14, 2012– Morven Park Lounge
The meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. Twelve of the
Board members were present, two were excused, and one
unexcused. There was one guest.
April’s minutes were accepted by the Board.
Treasurer’s Report:
Dilly reported that as of April 30,2012 there were the following
balances:
Main account: $37,759.56
Special account: $8370.88
After expenses, the April Licensed show made a profit of
$10,232.54
The Board discussed whether or not we should give another
donation to Morven Park. It was decided that we wait to see
what Morven Park does regarding their plans, since we had
given them a donation after the April show.
Licensed Shows:
Dianne Boyd presented her report on the April show. She said it
was very successful but there were some behind-the-scenes
issues that had occurred. The new half-point scoring was a bit
tricky at first for both judges and scorers, but by the end of the
first day all problems had been resolved. There is still a learning
curve for judges, scorers, and scribes with this new system.
There are not a lot of entries for the June show but there’s still
time, and the closing date is sooner than usual. Entries should
start coming in after some other upcoming licensed shows.
There will be temporary stalls available. There is a lot of
interest in Friday afternoon classes and they are almost full.
Alison is coordinating lunches, snacks, and drinks for the
Judge’s Forum to be held on Saturday June 9th.
Competitor’s Party for June licensed show:
Sheli reported on the party’s progress. There will be door prizes
and we have a liquor license for the day (for beer and wine
only). Each competitor gets 1 free drink of their choice.
Volunteers and others are also invited to attend the party.
Sponsors are still needed for this Show. Sheli suggested that
Board members contact their vets, farriers, etc. to see if they
would like to donate money to sponsor a class.
Schooling Shows:
Jessie has ordered new prizes for the 2012 Schooling show first
place winners.
For the Compass Rose show May 19, Judy reported that there
will be 2 full sized rings- 1 in the jump ring, and 1 in the top
ring. It will be a full day, with 120 rides!
Clinics and Education:
The Rider entry date for the July Clinic has been extended to
June 1st. There will be a clinician presentation on the Friday
night before the clinic. This will be open to riders and auditors
only. It will be a “Meet and Greet” at the Best Western Motel in
Leesburg, from 4-6 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided.
Membership
Barb reported that as of today, May 14,2012, there were 338
members- 12 less than this time last year.
The meeting adjourned at 8:23 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Diann Landau

Visit: www.vadanova.org
Bereiter Seiberl has been with the Spanish Riding
School for 18 years and is one of only two Bereiters who
perform the Long Rein solo in SRS performances -
his in-hand and groundwork skills are wonderful. He has
private students and horses in training in Austria who
compete successfully in the show ring.
Bereiter Seiberl is a fabulous instructor - excellent
English, effective and clear communicator, very kind and
patient, and a beautiful rider. He demands correct work but
is very encouraging throughout the lesson, and is
wonderful with riders of all levels, as well as both
amateurs and professionals. He is just as good at starting
changes and piaffe/passage and tweaking canter pirouettes
as he is helping a lower level rider develop throughness
and begin lateral work. He is familiar with and enjoys
working with many different breeds.

Manager’s Report by Renee Carter
The weather couldn't have been more perfect for the VADA/Nova schooling show held Saturday
May 19th at Compass Rose Farm in Haymarket Virginia. The show was full with two rings running all day. I'd
like to thank Judy Grass for hosting the show at her beautiful facility. She, as well as her competent staff, were
more than helpful and did a fantastic job preparing the grounds and the rings for a lovely competition.
VADA/Nova member Candy Allen, in particular, went out of her way to make sure I had everything I needed at
the farm in order to successfully run the show.
Being that this was my first experience managing a dressage show I discovered very quickly that none
of this would be possible without the help of our volunteers. Judy Grass again donated her time and energy in
serving as secretary for this very popular show. Thanks also to our scribes Diann Landau, Leslie Parnell and
Rachel DeMarcus; our scorers Barb Pickering and Robin Eisenhardt; ring steward Kim Bodoh and runner
James O'Dell. Judith Tartt was in charge of awards and ended up doubling as runner for ring 1 the second half of
the day. Alex Tonnacliff was an all around volunteer. He helped with set up in the morning, was a ring steward
for the first part of the day and ended up runner for ring 2 in the afternoon. His mother Kathy Tonnacliff stepped
in at the very last minute to serve as ring steward in the afternoon when we needed an extra person. I can't thank
you all enough for making this show happen!
A special thanks goes out to our judges Cathy Tucker-Slaterbeck and Jan Garlitz. It was truly a pleasure
working with both of you and I appreciate your knowledge of the sport as well as your professionalism. Thank
you for taking the time to help us all become better riders and trainers!
Last, but definitely not least, I'd like to thank all the competitors that participated in this show. All that
we, the managers, secretaries and volunteers do, is to support you and this sport that we all love. Congratulations
to our high scorer of the day Kathryn Bennett riding Just Georgie with their 73.333%! Thanks again to everyone
for a great show!
12
Congratulations to our second group of VADA/Nova members who qualified for the

Member of the Month This month we’d like to highlight Karoline Morris.
Karoline and her daughter, Peyton, are familiar and constant
figures at most VADA/Nova Shows. Originally from Long
Island, NY, Karoline has been in Virginia since 1986. She
moved to the area when she was job hunting and liked the area so much she stayed. She lives in Midland with her husband
Ed, daughter Peyton, 4 dogs, 5 cats and 5 horses.
As a teen in high school, she qualified for a special program that
Belmont race track had- teaching students about horse care and the
training of Thoroughbreds. This was a golden opportunity for Karoline
to get bitten by the “bug”, but after high school, college took over. It
wasn’t until Peyton started riding that Karoline got back into horses, and
after watching Peyton’s lessons she started herself. She bought her first
horse at the age of 42- figuring it was easier to learn on your own rather
than someone else’s. Karoline now knows that he was probably the
wrong horse for her, but he taught her a lot and she still has him- along
with two others of her own and two of Peyton’s dressage horses.
Karoline likes to do all volunteer jobs, but particularly enjoys
scoring and being ring steward. What she’d really like to do is drive a
golf cart! Being involved with the VADA/Nova shows has brought her
new friends and has furthered her “horsey” education. It gives her and
Peyton “quality” time together as well. She said she will continue
volunteering until she can’t do it anymore!
Karoline is honored to have been chosen as a Member of the
Month, and looks forward to helping at many more shows.
Karoline and her first horse, Montana’s Keogh

VADA Board Meeting Minutes
Wednesday April 12th 2012
Teleconference
Board Members Present: : Alison Douglas(Central), Tina Longaker(Charlottesville), Jane Palmer(ShenVADA),
Robyn Nunnally(SVDA), Beth Rippel (SVDA), Sherri Booye (Charlottesville), Alison Head (NOVA), Sandy Johnson (SVDA),
Anne Draine (NEVADA), Judith Harroun-Lord (ShenVADA), Gary Goodale (SWVADA), Shelli King (NOVA)
Others members present: Kathy Rowse (SVDA)
The meeting was called to order at 8:00 pm
Minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.
Treasurer’s Report: Combined balances in the bank accounts approx. $131,640 which includes deposits for the “L” program, but no
expenses. The awards banquet had a net loss of $3,800 but the income from attendees covers the Boar’s Head expense, which is the main
idea.
The board liked the venue of the Boar’s Head and Alison Douglas is to check on dates for next year around the same time.
Robin Dannels provided a financial report on the Purple Book, even with only $487 in ad revenue, we realized a substantial
reduction in expense producing the book as she found a more inexpensive printer. Net cost to the club was $3,203.30.
Schooling Show Challenge program- Shelli proposed that it could be held August 18th at Rosemont. Alison Douglas made a
motion that we approve Shelli’s proposal and Anne Draine seconded the motion which passed unanimously. The board has formed an
organizing committee and each chapter must choose one member to represent them. Chapters should send their member choice to Tina.
Members who volunteered on the call for chapters were:
Alison Douglas (Central) Anne Draine (Nevada) Shelli King (NOVA) Tina Longaker (Charlottesville) Beth Rippel (SVDA)
Chapters that still need to submit are: Fredericksburg, Shen Valley, Southwest
2012 VADA Stakes Challenge- there are only 4 chapter shows for qualifying as Central is not having their show, everything else
is in line
Fall Show Update- Tammy Nichols in charge of sponsorships
“L” program update- Kathy Rowse reported that she has 26 entries and she can take up to 30. Entries are refundable up to 30
days before the date. She has started working on session 2 and is looking at either Central’s or Janine’s show for 2013.
2013 Licensed Shows- discussion was held concerning the push forward of dates due to the National Show. March Madness is
going to early April, the same weekend as NOVA’s show on the 6th and 7th. Southeast is looking at April 20-21st, they’re not sure. Cen-
tral is trying to fit in without stepping on anybody. Charlottesville will be April 27th and 28th. May 18th will be both PVDA and Lexing-
ton. June 15th will be Janine’s show.
Next meeting will be held Wednesday June 20thst at 8:00 pm (teleconference)
Meeting was adjourned at 8:55 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Alison Douglas
