Porsches2Pinos 2Stargazing On Mt. Pinos Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011
Moorpark College Astronomy
Professor and SBR member
Hal Jandorf once again
will take 50 of us
to the summit of
Mt. Pinos for an
incredible evening
of star-gazing!
Meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Holiday Inn Express parking lot, where a $5-per-person activity fee will be collected. We’ll depart at 7:00 p.m. (sharp!) and travel the roads of Lake of the Woods, crossing the San Andreas Fault several times. We’ll enter Cuddy Val-ley with verdant pastures and farms. Then, our Porsches will gain altitude from 5,000 feet to almost 9,000 feet along an amazing, curvy, pine-edged road leading to a large mountain parking lot. This is called Chula Vista.
Mount Pinos is the best stargazing observation spot in Southern California, far away from light pollution and moisture. The union of trees and sky is absolutely stunning! There, at an altitude of 8800 feet, we’ll set up telescopes and enjoy a bring-your-own picnic dinner until the twilight dims.
As the stars appear, I’ll point out the constellations. We’ll find colorful double stars, star clusters, nebulae and galaxies and count how many falling stars (meteors) you see! We’ll witness the magnificent Milky Way, and comprehend the scale of our universe and how humble humanity truly is. Yet, we are an integral part of the cosmos.
I highly recommend staying at the hotel for the night. That will allow you more observation time by avoiding the drive home at night! It gets dark at 9:00 p.m., so plan on staying longer. I usually leave the observation site at midnight; it’s about a 30-minute drive to the hotel.
On our Sunday morning drive to Ojai, we’ll travel some of the best Porsche roads in California: Lockwood Valley and Highway 33. Then, enjoy a no-host lunch in Ojai. This will complete the sky and earth parts of our small cosmic adventure!
Please RSVP soon, and I’ll email you full details on what you should bring along to enhance your experience. Clear roads and clear skies! – Hal Jandorf

The name Porsche has beenassociated with pioneeringautomotive engineeringinnovationssincethebeginning
ofthelastcentury.In1900,Prof.FerdinandPorsche unveiled his Lohner Porsche,an electric car with wheel-hub motorsdriving the front wheels. Soon after, thiscarfeaturedall-wheeldriveandfour-wheelbrakes,anotherworldfirst.Ahighlightofhis early years as an automotive designerwastheLohner-PorscheSemperVivusthatwentdowninhistory111yearsagoasthefirstfunctionalhybridcar.
Porsche’s Semper Vivus (AlwaysAlive) recreation is a tribute to Prof.Porsche’s visionary invention. The fullyfunctional Semper Vivus replica, basedon original drawings and exhaustiveresearch, is a collaborative effort betweenPorsche Engineering and KarosseriebauDrescher, acoachbuildingcompanybasedin Hinterzarten in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. This faithfulreplica, whose visionary design impressestothisveryday,wasondisplayattheNewYorkAutoShowpressdayonApril20.
The Lohner-Porsche Semper Vivus History
Prof. Ferdinand Porsche was busydesigninganddevelopinghiscarsasearlyas1896.Thefirstfruitofhisendeavorswasan electric vehicle known as the Lohner-Porsche. It was driven by steered wheel-hubmotors,anditcausedasensationattheParis World Exhibition in 1900. This wassoonfollowedbyanevenmoreimpressiveexampleofProf.Porsche’sinnovativespirit.A racing car boasting four wheel-hubelectric motors became the world’s firstall-wheeldrivepassengercar,andmarkedtheautomotiveengineeringdebutoffour-wheel brakes. No less visionary was Prof.Porsche’s next idea; in 1900 he combinedhisbattery-poweredwheelhubdrivewitha petrol engine, thus creating the serialhybriddriveprinciple.
Prof. Porsche had entered unchartedterritory with the Semper Vivus, theworld’s first functional, full-hybrid car. Inthis vehicle, two generators paired withpetrol engines formed a single chargingunit, simultaneously supplying electricityto wheel-hub motors and batteries. Inautumn 1900, Prof. Porsche set to workon a first prototype with petrol-electric
hybrid drive. Presumably he based theworld’sfirstfullhybridcaronaconversionof his electric racing vehicle from theSemmering-Bergrennen race. To this endhe combined his electrical wheel-hubmotorswith twocombustionenginesandno mechanical connection whatsoeverto a drive axle. Instead, they each drovean electric generator supplying both thewheel-hub motors and accumulators withelectricity. This was the birth of serialhybriddrive.Asafullhybridconcept, theSemperVivuswasalsoabletocoverlongerdistancespurelyonbatterypoweruntilthecombustion engine had to be engaged torechargethebatteries.
To save weight and create room fora petrol engine, Prof. Porsche swappedthe original 74-cell accumulator in hiselectromobiles for a smaller battery withonly44cells.Inthemiddleofthevehicleheinstalledtwowater-cooled3.5PS(2.6kW)DeDion Bouton petrol engines -- drivingtwogeneratorstocreateelectricity--eachproducing2.5hp(1.84kW).Bothenginesoperated independently, each delivering20 amperes with a voltage of 90 volts. The electricity generated by the dynamosinitially flowed to the wheel-hub motors, with the surplus power being sent on to

the batteries. An added bonus was that itwas also possible to use the generators aselectricstartermotorsforthepetrolenginesbyreversingthedirectionofrotation.
In practice, Prof. Porsche still had tocontend with the principal problem ofhis wheel-hub cars – the vehicle’s heavyweight.AlthoughtheSemperVivushybridcar’s total weight was only 155 poundsmore than the original version, the 2700pound prototype was a challenge for thepneumatic tires’ softrubbermix. Inotherrespects as well the hybrid concept wasstillalongwayawayfrombeingreadyforseriesproduction.Withitsbodilesschassis, exposedpetrolenginesandunsprungrearaxle, theSemperVivusmayhaveimpressedvisitors to the Paris Motor Show in 1901,but potential car buyers must have feltthe bare-bones prototype was not forthem. The interaction of engine, batteriesand control system also still needed a lotof development and in addition to theambitious control technology, a constantproblem was dirt being thrown up andfouling the accumulators. Yet the hybridconcept pointed to new possibilities thatProf. Porsche resolutely set about turningintoreality.
The Lohner-Porsche MixteIn 1901 Prof. Porsche developed the
revised concept of his ‘petrol-electrichybrid car’ into a variant that was readyfor series production under the Lohner-Porsche Mixte name (borrowing theFrenchterm‘voituresmixtes’).Withafour-cylinder,front-mountedengine,thismodelmirroredtheMercedesvehicleconceptjustrecently designed by Wilhelm Maybach, but with its two wheel-hub motors stillconforming to the concept of a serialhybrid car. Prof. Porsche was now usinga powerful 5.5-liter, 25-hp (18 kW) four-cylinderenginefromtheAustrianDaimlerenginecompanyasanelectricalgenerator.Theenginewasconnectedbyadriveshafttotheelectricgeneratorlocatedundertheseat, with control handled by a primarycontrollernexttothesteeringwheel.
Tosolvehisvehicles’weightproblems,Prof. Porsche was constantly reducingbatterysizewhilealsoattemptingtodesigna dust-proof battery housing. While theLohner-Porsche Mixte was only able to
drive a few kilometers on electric poweralone because of the reduced batterycapacity, the unladen weight of the four-seat touring car including body fell toaround 2650 pounds. In normal drivingmodethepetrolengineandgeneratorranataconstantspeed,feedingthewheel-hubmotors and battery with electricity at aconstantvoltage.
Beforetheendof1901,LudwigLohnerandProf.FerdinandPorschehadpulledoffarespectableresultbysellingfiveLohner-Porsche Mixte cars. With a selling priceof approximately 14,000 Krone each, thismadethecarsveryexclusivecommodities.ThepurchaserofthisinitialserieswasEmilJellinek, the well-known general agent oftheDaimlerenginecompanyinStuttgart-Untertürkheim and the inspirationbehindthefirstMercedes(namedafterhisdaughter)onlytheyearbefore.Despitethiscontact,acooperationagreementtosupplyMercedesenginesfailedtomaterializeandonlysevenLohner-PorscheswithDaimlerengines were built. From 1903 onwards, petrol engines from Panhard & Levassorwere used because the large FrenchautomotivemanufacturerhadacquiredthelicenserightsforFrance,GreatBritainandItalyfromLudwigLohner.
At about the same time, Prof. Porscheagain significantly modified his cars’drive concepts. For weight reasons andto reduce production costs, he dispensedwith the purely electric driving capabilityandshrunkthebatterytoaminimumforinitiatingthestartermotor.Hereplacedthemissing energy storage unit with another
innovation. The generator, designed as astationary armature machine, was fittedwithanelectro-mechanicalspeedregulatorpatented as a “device for automaticallyregulatingelectricgenerators.”Prof.Porschealso ushered in a further development inwheel-hubmotortechnology.Aredesignedhub casing allowed the kingpins to berelocatedclosertothecenterofthewheel. This steering geometry, patented in May1902, significantly reduced the effect ofroad impacts and the effort needed toturn the steering wheel. To reduce theunsprungmassofthewheels,Prof.Porschealso reduced the diameter of his wheel-hubmotors,whichhecompensatedforbyusingwiderwindings.
In April 1902, having incorporatedtheseimprovements,Prof.PorschetookhisplaceonthestartinggridfortheExelbergrace.Histwo-seatMixteracingcarwasnotonlyvisuallyimpressiveduetoitsmodernproportionsbutimpressiveonthetrack,aswell. Despite these more than impressivedemonstrations, sales of the Mixteproduction variants remained far lowerthan expectations. With only 11 hybridcars sold, the return on investment wasnot on par with the enormous technicaldevelopmentcostsbetween1900and1905.The main problem was undoubtedly thehighsalesprice.Dependingondesignandequipment, a Lohner-Porsche Mixte costbetween14,400and34,028Krone,insomecasesmaking italmost twiceasexpensiveas comparable, conventionally poweredmotor vehicles. This was compounded bythehighmaintenancecostofthecomplexdrivesystemthatwasunabletokeeppacewiththeeverincreasingreliabilityofnormalpetrolcars.Pureelectricvehicles, however, were economically more successful.Approximately65Lohner-Porscheelectriccarsweresoldduringthefirstfiveyearsofseriesproductiontotheendof1905.
The Reincarnation of The Semper Vivus
In November 2007 the PorscheMuseum embarked on one of the mostinteresting and challenging projects inits history: the construction of a faithfulreplicaofthe1900Lohner-PorscheSemperVivus. Even 111 years after its invention, buildingtheworld’sfirstfunctioninghybridcarwasagreatchallengeforall.Ultimatelyitwasnot justaboutanextremeattentiontovisualdetailsbutalsoachievingthesameperformance as the original. The PorscheMuseum entrusted the workmanship toa team of experts led by coachbuilderHubertDrescher, whohadalreadyprovenhis competence in numerous difficult
restoration projects. As with a numberof racing car projects, the aluminumbody of the Porsche Type 64 museumexhibit originates from the Hinterzartencoachbuilderworkshop, aswell.
Exhaustiveresearchinvariousarchivesacross Europe was the first step. Theoutcomewasahandfulofblack-and-whitephotos and an original technical drawingservingastheproject’sfoundation.AswithProf. Porsche, the Semper Vivus replicainitially began as a blank sheet of paper. This meant that in addition to a gooddeal of imagination, the project requiredextensive research and calculations inorder to be faithfully recreate an accurateand working likeness of the electricwheel-hub motor. Since no specificationsor other helpful records had survived, experts initially created ready reckonersand design drawings on graph paper in
the time-honored fashion. This involvedthe painstaking study and laboriousmeasurement of photos and drawings. As there was no functioning wheel hubmotor in existence, technical detailssuchasperformanceandrangehad toberesurrectedandcalculatedfromscratch.
When it came to selecting materials, coachbuilderDreschertookhisinspiration, among other sources, from coaches andcarriages from the dawn of the 20thCentury. This required the assistance ofexperiencedsupplierswhowereentrustedwith the manufacturing of the specialmaterials. The fully functioning SemperVivus replica, which took approximatelythreeyearstobuild, doesnotsolelyincludereplica components. For example, it waspossible to fit some original componentsincludingcombustionengines.
Today, Prof. Ferdinand Porsche’sinnovative spirit lives on at Porsche AG’sResearch and Development Center inWeissach, Germany where the companyis applying its engineering strength todevelop various hybrid systems. The massive electric wheel hub motors were recreated after careful study of photos and drawings, as there were no examples left to dissect.

The fully functioning replica Semper Vivus took approximately three years to build.

Promise yourself:To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear,And too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
