Confession

Make no mistake aboutit; the Bible Belt iscoming loose and the itspants are falling down, making the gospel lookweak and ineffective.E v e r y m a j o rd e n o m i n a t i o n i sdeclining in membershipand the effect we arehaving on the culture isminimal at best. Youcan’t throw a rock andnot hit a church of somekind in the south. Yetpeople are not coming

and engaging in worship and spiritual growth. Insteadof focusing on the reality that we (average, faithful,Sunday church attendees) are the bulk of the problemwe do real productive things like blogging and writingarticles in various publications in an attempt toprotect the list of things that make one a SouthernBaptist and bashing the organizations that don’t “doit” just like we would. We have conversations aboutwardrobe choices and who gets “rock star” status. Some seriously give those who like John Piper aheadache when I know guys (Andy Blankenship) whofollow Adrian Rogers on Twitter, and he’s been gonefor years.

What if we took an approach like Nehemiah? Inchapter 1:6-7, I read about a guy who says that heand his father’s house are just as much a part of theproblem as anyone else. He is a guy that weeps overa situation that happened 141 years prior and he stillfeels like he is to blame. So what if all of God’speople took responsibility and we started confessingour short comings and laziness and then we actuallydid something productive? I believe the Bible Beltwould look drastically different don’t you? I guess Iwill start.

Hello my name is Andy Blankenship and I amextremely messed up! I am just now starting todiscover the depths of my pharisaical ways. I am

often too harsh and do not show the grace that I havebeen shown. I often act as though I have it all togetherwhen in reality I have way more questions than I doanswers. I am critical at times of those who don’tbelieve exactly as I do, and in turn, I try to spend as alittle time as possible with them. I struggle to showmercy as opposed to taking the rocks out of mypockets and throwing them. I constantly need thegrace of Jesus Christ to wash over me and give theability to love the unlovable, which is a something Iam incapable of doing otherwise. I confess that Ibelieve this article will make little difference in thelives of those who read it, if any, but I put it out therein hopes that it will.

Help the GAs provide clean drinking water

The most basic of physicalneeds—water. Yet so manyaround the world do not haveaccess to clean, safe drinkingwater. You can help.

Since 1997 WMU® has beenmeeting one of the most basichuman needs of missionariesthrough Pure Water, PureLove. The goal of thisministry is to provide

missionaries and the people they serve with cleandrinking water, free from disease-causingmicroorganisms, by providing filters and waterpurification equipment at no cost to them. WMUexpanded this ministry in 2006 by also granting fundsfor drilling wells in villages and communities wheremissionaries serve without a clean water supply andproviding assistance with disaster relief.

The Girls in Action distributed water bottles on May29 and asked they be returned filled with money forthis project by July 24. You may also make yourdonation simply by writing “Pure Water, Pure Love”on your check. Visit www.wmu.com for more info.
