each week, he and his team of Nova scienceNow correspondents find creative and entertaining ways to bring PBs viewers magazine-style reports on the biggest breakthroughs and most compelling personalities in science today.

this month, Nova scienceNow begins its fourth WGBH-produced season with stories from the frontiers of science and technology that aren’t covered elsewhere—including segments on hidden planets, synthetic diamonds, and the controversial computer “pitch-correction” software that turns sour notes into sweet ones (see page 18).

“in an era when scientific innovations often resonate on a global scale and rapidly change the way we live,” says Paula s. Apsell, director of the WGBH science Unit and senior executive producer of Nova and Nova scienceNow, “neil is there to inform and inspire viewers about these discoveries and explore the connections between science and their daily lives.”

Our broadcasts and websites are only the beginning of the science con-versation. Out in the community, science Café gatherings (600 in 30 states last year!) take Nova scienceNow on the road to local pubs and coffeehouses where enthusiasts connect with celebrated scientists (sciencecafes.org).

From creating Nova in 1974…to helping science come alive for kids with series like Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman, Curious George, and Design Squad…to bringing science to lifelong learners with our Forum network (forum-network.org; see below), pro-moting science literacy is one of WGBH’s core missions.

WCAI’s Summer of Science“these organizations are powerhouses in

the scientific world, and are involved in cutting-edge research on topics from climate change to sustainable energy,” says series reporter and editor Heather Handley Goldstone, who herself holds a Phd in biology from the massachusetts institute of technology-Woods Hole Oceanographic institution Joint Program in Oceanography and Applied Ocean engineering. “With Science at Work, we’re telling the stories of the scientists who live right here in our community.”

“science often comes to us as a finished product, from somewhere ‘out there’,” adds execu-tive producer steve Young. “We have a terrific opportunity to show the process of science, and to put a human face on it.”

this summer, Science at Work brings listeners the inside scoop on the business of being a scien-tist in today’s world. it’s not all discovering carnivo-rous sea squirts and studying coral reefs. the first few episodes explore the connections between science and society, including an insider’s view of presenting scientific testimony to Congress, and a look at a new version of Google earth that brings ocean science to your desktop. then the focus turns to the inner workings of science—tenure, the line between science and advocacy, and the challenge scientist couples face in finding jobs together.

Science at Work’s second season begins monday, 6/15 and runs daily through Friday, 6/26 during Morning Edition and All Things Considered. Science Minutes, 60-second snapshots that showcase the work of local scientists, complement the Science at Work stories, and will air through-out the day. WCAi also launches a second season of its investiga-tive series, Fresh Water, Salt Water this month. the series, which

won a 2009 edward r. murrow Award for Best news series, takes a close look at an essential part of the Cape experience: water. it kicks off with the heated topic of bycatch (the accidental catching or entanglement of species other than the target species), which pits new england fishermen against each other—groundfishermen claim that trawlers are destroying the groundfish fisheries, and trawlers fight against being banned from groundfish waters. Fresh Water, Salt Water also explores the continuing trouble with critically endangered right whales becoming entangled in fishing lines, rising sea levels and declining fish populations due to climate change on Cape Cod, and the growing problem of pharmaceuticals in the water supply, among other topics. these episodes also will be archived online.

was drawn to 16th-century lute music. When i found a recording of the lute, and heard the colors that the instrument brought to the music, i said to my parents, “i have to find one. i have to learn how to play the lute.”

Q How did you find your first lute?

A my guitar teacher in Columbus, Ohio owned a lute that he was unable to play. so i bought

his lute and his library of lute music, and realized immediately that the reason he couldn’t play it was that the strings were too high off the finger-board. i got a local guitar builder to lower the strings, and played the lute pieces i had been play-ing on the guitar at my next lesson. my guitar teacher stared at me disbelievingly.

Q How do today’s lutes compare to period instruments?

A there are many excellent lute makers today, but i think the really superb instruments of

the 16th and 17th centuries have not been equaled. that’s true of other instruments like vio-lins and cellos, too. the world’s greatest violinists all want to play on 17th-century violins because that’s when the best instruments were built. Playing an original lute is an extraordinary experi-ence—the differences lie in levels of complexity, colors and textures, and a kind of glow to the sound that is really hard to explain.

Q What do you like best about playing early music?

A You have to be a researcher, a musicologist, an archaeologist, an organologist, a historian,

a linguist and a practicing musician to find out how best to play the music—it’s never boring. the music of this period is so rich, so moving and so compelling that i can’t think of anything i would rather do.

Q Is there a difference in performing early music and performing classical music?

A in the normal classical world, if you are a recitalist, you have a recital program or maybe

two that you offer during the year. When you perform, that’s what you play. in the early music

world, nearly every concert we play has to be a different program because one concert presenter wants lute music from the court of Louis the Xiii and the next one from early 16th-century venice. if you’re going to play in the Hungarian Lute Festival that means finding Hungarian lute music.

Q What do you see as the role of public radio in the world of classical music?

A i’ve always thought one of the reasons that sports are so popular is that everyone knows

the rules and strategies—every time there’s a pitch in the World series, the millions of people watching are thinking along with the pitcher and batter. When most people go to classical music concerts, they have no knowledge about how the music was written, how the harmonies interact, what kinds of things to listen for—and it’s very difficult to appreciate something if you don’t really understand it. Public radio plays the kind of music that helps listeners learn. it really plays a vital role. Recordings from Boston Early Music Festivals past and present will be featured every hour on our classical programs on 89.7 during the 2009 Festival Week, June 8–14 (see page 24 or visit wgbh.org/classical).

Inside Early Music with Paul O’Detteto our fair city they come in June, bearing lutes and harps, recorders and harpsichords, to celebrate music from the middle Ages, renaissance and Baroque periods at the Boston early music Festival (BemF). For nine days, the world’s greatest early music performers present a non-stop program of historical performances, concerts and educational events, including an operatic centerpiece, monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea.

Paul O’Dette, BemF artistic director since 1993, is an acclaimed American lutenist, conductor, and music researcher specializing in early music, and a professor of lute and director of early music at the eastman school of music in rochester, new York. O’dette has helped define the technical and stylistic standards for modern performers of the genre. AudioFile’s Jen Goebel recently talked with O’dette about early music, public radio and the life of a lutenist.

Q How did you get involved with the Boston Early Music Festival?

A i started performing at BemF in 1983, and performed in every festival until 1993, when i

was asked by the Board of directors to become artistic director. it’s been a very interesting journey for me, because as a lutenist, i play mostly solo concerts or with small ensembles. As artistic direc-tor, i’m responsible for larger projects, like operas with multiple instrumentalists and singers. i love doing the festival because it allows me to explore beautiful but neglected repertoire and to intro-duce wonderful, unknown artists.

Q Why Boston?

A Boston was a logical place to start an early music festival because it has a rich tradition

of instrument building—great recorder, flute, harpsichord and forte-piano builders—as well as a large number of performers and a very strong audience base.

Q How did you become a lutenist?

A my mother was an opera singer and my father was an amateur choral singer and composer,

and so i sat in opera rehearsals for hours as a young boy. i started playing classical guitar, and
