1 With the temperature warming up we don’t have any dune trips planned until Coral Pink, but that great trip isn’t far away now. Following Coral Pink we have the annual Lake Havasu trip planned for the weekend of August 14-17th. Make your plans now to join us for some summer fun. Janece reports that the club flags are done, and will be available for $20 each. Thanks to Janece for getting these sewn up and screen printed. With fewer trip articles this month, we have more fun and games. We have a clearer version of last month’s word search, and Janece has created a crossword that is on page 3. During a weekend in late April we made the now traditional end of season trip to Dumont. We had a great turnout with Steve Porter, Kevin Fegan, Mark Rhoades and the kids, Walt Fisher (with his newly ac- quired grey sandrail), Steve Tharp, John Cole, Dean Carver, Jim and Nancy Kstle, and Melissa and me. It was just a two day weekend for us, but we arrived at sunset on Friday thanks to the short drive (and leaving work a little early). Perhaps the biggest story of the trip was the debut of Walt’s new car. We arrived to find that shortly after Gordon’s Well Walt had arranged to purchase Jeff Oliver’s beautiful grey sandrail. We were sad to hear that Jeff had the car for sale, but were glad that this special car didn’t go far. Walt was already quite famil- iar with this style of car, as he and Jeff had originally built their cars together years ago. Both cars have under- gone significant transformations over the years, with Jeff’s recently getting the 6.0 Liter V8 transplant. Walt reports that this makes it hard to pull you head off of the headrest while under acceleration. We went for a number of rides on Saturday, and the weather was very nice. We were camped near the tips of the fingers, and didn’t have any problem with soft sand getting into camp. Kevin Fegan came out for the first time in a few years with his 3.8 Liter V6 car and enjoyed being back in the dunes. With relatively little traffic in the dunes we were able to get up to high speeds quickly, and saw over 70 miles per hour out on the back side of the dunes. This got a little interesting when John Cole’s tie rod spreader came off of the steering rack, which (Continued on page 2)

caused the car to spin out and do a 180 on the side of a relatively steepdune. Fortunately it came to a stop without further event, and we wereable to get it back together and he continued on for the rest of theweekend.

We sat around some in themiddle of the day Saturday, butwent for great rides too. We dida little welding on my car, andformulated plans to update therear five link mounts beforeCoral Pink. Since mine was thefirst of the high school five linkcars, we have since made someiterative improvements, andnow we’ll go back and updatemine to make it a little stronger.

On Sunday we went for another fast ride through the dunes. Kevinhad a rear bearing go out, so we led him back to camp and continuedon. Then we had a little event where Walt crossed a ridge into awitch’s eye which is rumored to have flipped the new car over ontoit’s roof and side. By the time we got back to the scene the car wasplaced skillfully on all four wheels, and the damage was limited to abent spindle and whip tab. Walt drove back to camp, and we maderepairs before heading home and Walt and those lucky enough to get

to spend another day out therewent for an afternoon ride.

We left on Sunday after-noon and headed home. Weate at the Mad Greek in Bakerand began looking forward tothe next time we’d be drivingthrough there with the traileron the way to Coral Pink. Wecan’t wait!

As with any organization there are guidelines we operate within. Please read and abide by the following:1. NO FIREWORKS ALLOWED WITHIN CAMP BOUNDRIES2. DOGS MUST BE KEPT UNDER CONTROL AT ALL TIMES (BLM law)3. ON A RIDE, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF YOU AND THE VEHICLE BEHIND

YOU. If they stop, you stop and wait for the group to return to you. This prevents separation and in this manner wenever leave a member in the dunes. Remember, it’s easier to find you if you stay still: “a moving target is harder to hit”

4. PLEASE OBSERVE THE “RIDE RATINGS” ON THE CLUB BOARD AND SELECT THOSE RIDES YOU WISHTO PARTICIPATE IN. If you wish to lead a ride, put the time and type of ride you want to lead on the board and thenstick to that time. No passing on rides (except #6 rides). You can always change your place in line at a break or if youare waved on by the driver ahead of you.

5. REMEMBER, WE ARE A GROUP OF FRIENDS who share a common interest in riding in the desert. Always keep inmind how your actions affect the other members.
