Thanks must go to everyone who drove - some drivig fortwo hours just to get to the City; Brooke who handled thetrafc on the ramps for the fist tie and did it with ease;

Leigh who helped tu the vehicles around at the Shrie so

we could meet our tasks on tie.

Finaly , special thanks to Eddie and John for transportngand organising the catering for our sausage sizzle.

I suspect Anc Day 2000 wi be bigger than this year solet's put another exta effort in for the vets. next year. Thanks for your help.

Pershing Tank

Page 6

Packs 90-mm. Punch

~ .

A 16'/i.pound projectile from this 90-mm. gun òn the Pershing wil pierce 14 inches of armor at 300 yards,Firepower also includes two .30 caliber mochine guns and one .50 AA gun. (Offcial U. S. Army photo.)

A MERICA'S new General Pershing, orl- M-26, is the Joe Louis of tanks. It isneither the biggest nor the heaviest tankof World War II, but has what is needed tooutfight any other tank. The function of atank is to provide firepower, mobilty, andcrew protection for offensive action, and itsvalue must be judged on this basis.

The Germans' 60-tonTigersand 75-ton Royal Tigers had 88-mm. guns (P.S.M., June '45, p.68) . But the 45-ton Pershingcarries a 90-mm. gun, with suchhigh muzzle velocity and armor-penetrating power that this tankhas been nicknamed the "TigerTamer."

The Pershing is driven by aneight-cylinder, 500-horsepower en-gine. has a top speed of 25 miles

an hour, and can negotiate gradesup to 60 percent, Its movingtracks are two feet wide. Torsion-bar suspension makes this mon-ster ride smoother than itspredecessors. The fluid drive issimilar to that used in automo-biles, and the tank is steered withlevers. Dual controls make it pos-sible for the assistant driver to

take over its operation promptly if thedriver is put out of action.

Its crew of five is protected by frontarmor and a gunshield four inches thick, and by inch-thick armor in back. The M-26is 19% feet long, 11 feet 2 inches wide, andonly slightly over nine feet high.

Four-inch.thick armor, sloped for maximum protection for itsweight. covers the front of the new M-26. (Signal Corps photo.)

TRIP REPORT. . . . . .

BUSH TRI, MT DISAPPOINTMENTSUNDAY 16 MAY

Leaving Pakenham at 06:30 hrs with theDodge in crew cab configuration and withexta poly tars to protect the anticipated

passengers from the predicted rain, I set offfor Cockatoo.

Leaving Cockatoo at 07:30 hrs with grand-sons Jody, Tim, Ishwar and Luke (newlypromoted to number one driver), weheaded for the meeting point beyondWhittlesea, aranged for 10:00 hrs.

After a stop in Whittlesea for food for thepassengers (including Luke's girlfriend), wewere again on our way and after a briefwait we were joined by trip leaderBrian Brown who guided us to the convoy.

Travellng well-formed bush roads andtracks we stopped for moming tea andlater, lunch, after which the serious stuffstared.

Travelling wet bush tracks was quite achallenge, with some sections resembling asVirimming pool Virith two feet of mud in thebottom. At one stage our vehicle slidsideways, and jammed against a tree, necessitating use of the winch to extcateourselves.

". ~.':t,.... ,." ...."

Page 8

After some hours of four wheel driving weassembled to say our good-byes atapproximately 15:00 hrs.

As always it was great to spend a day inthe bush, paricularly as the weather hadimproved and the rain had stopped.

My own day was spent comfortably

curled up in the passenger seat, thoroughly enjoying myself socialisingwith fellow VMVCers and my passengers.

Whilst I have travelled many miles as apassenger with Luke driving, this was myfirst experience in the bush, and I amquite proud of Luke's efforts.

We left the assembly area at approx15:20 hrs, arving home at 18:00 hrs, after a fantastic day; covering in totalover 200 miles.

Many thanks to Brian for organising thistrip.
