El 10 de junio se realizó la premiación e inauguración de la muestra del XXI Concurso de acuarela “Paisaje peruano” Premio John Constable.

En esta oportunidad, el jurado estuvo conformado por Rafael Hastings, Ana Cecilia Gonzáles Vigil y Alberto Casari, quienes seleccionaron entre casi 200 acuarelas recibidas. En la exposición apreciaremos 34 acuarelas que impactan por el dominio de la técnica, el color y la temática que al unísono representan un concepto de identidad cada vez más contemporáneo.

¿La verdad? Ni me lo imaginaba• Eduardo Sedano

El haber obtenido una A en el FCE había sido suficiente para mí; no me preocupaba mucho por la posibilidad de obtener la beca, ya que la consideraba escasa... Eso fue hasta que recibí una llamada a mi celular

el día de la ceremonia. Me comunicaron que era uno de los candidatos para recibir la beca, pero en ese momento volví a pensar: “¡Bah!, ¿qué posibilidades hay de que gane?”. Sí, recontra pesimista. Mi sorpresa fue grande cuando me enteré de que en verdad había sido uno de los 10 ganadores, algo que, como pueden ver, no tenía ni idea que iba a suceder. Bueno, al final solo me queda agradecer a mi abuelo que me enseñó inglés desde pequeño y obviamente al BRITÁNICO por haberme dado esta oportunidad y por la enseñanza que me brindó durante dos (¿o fueron tres?) años.

Months later, I received at home the invitation to the ceremony at which BRITÁNICO students would receive their certificates. Attached to it, there was a letter in which I was informed that I met the requirements for the excellence scholarship.

Then, at the ceremony, I was crossing my fingers to be fortunate enough to win the scholarship. To my surprise, it was announced that the ten of us would be awarded the scholarship. Suddenly, an atmosphere of joy and happiness broke out in the hotel and the audience, who were clapping for a long time. (On that night, I remember I could not sleep because of the excitement).

This article would not be complete if I did not mention the teachers who helped me on this long journey of learning English. How could I ever forget my wise master Jedi Eduardo Jordan, who used to tell us jokes in the middle of the class so that we could have a good time. Another remarkable teacher is Mrs Lizbeth Nieves. You can always find her with a big smile on her face. Unfortunately, she had to abandon us (I say “us” because of my classmates and me) on the day of the final exam. But there was a good reason for this: she was granted a scholarship by the BRITÁNICO and travelled to England for some months.

Now it is time to name the teacher who pushes you to your limits: Mrs Karina Gutierrez. She was strict and whenever we handed in a piece of writing that contained easy or low vocabulary, she asked us to rewrite it. I could define her as the teacher who makes you do your best. Last but not the least, I am going to mention the lovely and unforgettable Rocio “Chio” Ayala. She was the teacher who familiarized me with the FCE exam and the one with whom I spent my last moments at the BRITÁNICO – a teacher I will always remember.

It is worth saying that all of them have a great knowledge of English. What is more, if you are lucky enough to be their student, please get the best out of them, because they will

provide you with the necessary tools to become a master Jedi, as Eduardo Jordan would say. However, always keep in mind: learning English is a never-ending process.

Finally, I think the BRITÁNICO is tired of hearing this but I cannot be the exception. A huge and enormous “THANKS” to the BRITÁNICO for this wonderful opportunity that will not only change my vision of life, but will also help me grow as a person.

A final word of advice: if you are a student who is taking the FCE, CAE or CPE in the near or more distant future, all I can say is: DO YOUR BEST, TRY YOUR HARDEST and NEVER GIVE UP.

Inducción a los sistemas multimediales dirigida a profesores del Área de Clientes Externos• Richard Coaquira, IT Trainer

Durante los meses de mayo y junio, se organizaron y desarrollaron actividades inductivas dirigidas a los profesores del Área de Clientes Externos respecto a la aplicación de sistemas multimediales en el proceso de enseñanza–aprendizaje del idioma inglés.

La inducción fue desarrollada bajo el concepto de tecnología educativa, donde los profesores aplicaron diferentes software, planificando, desarrollando y gestionando los contenidos temáticos que son materia de sus actividades lectivas.

Los sistemas multimediales contribuyen de manera importante al mejoramiento en la entrega de contenidos a los alumnos. A través de estos sistemas el profesor es quien procesa sus contenidos, los analiza y los comprende, para luego argumentarlos en cada actividad lectiva. De esta manera, se logra nuevos enfoques de enseñanza-aprendizaje y una receptividad muy positiva de los estudiantes.

El BRITÁNICO organizó desayuno empresarialCelebrando los diez años de creación de Clientes Externos, se realizó, en el Country Club Lima Hotel, un desayuno para todas las empresas que toman los servicios de esta área del BRITÁNICO.

Durante el desayuno, se hizo una presentación en inglés acerca de la cultura de los Pub Lunches. De esta manera, los asistentes pudieron conocer un poco más acerca de una de las costumbres del Reino Unido.

Sesión con Jeremy HarmerEl 26 de mayo Jeremy Harmer, reconocido autor de libros como How to Teach English y The Practice of English Language Teaching, visitó el BRITÁNICO nuevamente y brindó una sesión especial, para nuestros profesores y staff académico, titulada Difference, medals, missions and angels, en la cual se habló de la importancia de la diferenciación individual al momento de enseñar.

Profesores Fase AvanzadaEl 12 de mayo nuestros profesores de la Fase Avanzada asistieron a una sesión de trabajo y capacitación a cargo de Jonathan Turner, CUP Andean Region Academic Consultant. En esta ocasión, el tema fue First Certificate and Complete First Certificate, from coursebook to exam. El señor Turner viene visitándonos periódicamente, pues ha sido asignado por Cambridge University Press (CUP) para acompañar la introducción del nuevo texto Complete FCE usado desde el mes de enero en el BRITÁNICO.

Teaching Knowledge Test - Partially Online CourseEl sábado 13 de junio terminó con éxito nuestro curso Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT), que se ofreció en la modalidad partially on line (semipresencial: sesiones en línea y sesiones presenciales).

Durante el desarrollo del curso, los participantes, todos ellos profesores de diferentes entidades educativas, pudieron explorar diversos aspectos de la metodología en la enseñanza de inglés como lengua extranjera y actualizar sus conocimientos sobre las últimas tendencias en el mundo de la ELT. Al mismo tiempo, el curso incluyó prácticas del examen TKT como preparación para rendir el examen internacional (TKT) de la Universidad de Cambridge. Conferencia de Jeremy Harmer Gracias a la invitación de la editorial Pearson, nuestros alumnos del último ciclo del curso ELT asistieron a la conferencia que ofreció Jeremy Harmer el 27 de mayo en un prestigioso hotel de Miraflores. Antes de la conferencia, el señor Harmer departió unos minutos con nuestros alumnos, quienes estuvieron complacidos de conocerlo en persona, pues es el autor del libro que usan en el curso.

Esta vez estuvieron dirigidas a nuestros alumnos del programa de Juniors y se realizaron en los centros de Los Jardines, Pueblo Libre y San Isidro.

For the fourth consecutive year, and as integral part of our continuous professional development programme, the BRITÁNICO invited two English Language Teacher Training specialists from the renowned institution International House London in the United Kingdom. Conrad Heyns and Melissa Lamb ran a course for a large group of BRITÁNICO teachers from all our different centres. Teachers were delighted to have the experience of British culture brought directly into the classroom for them together with plenty of reflection on the theory and practice of English Language Teaching.

The magic of ELT• Tindara Nastasi, Tutor

Participating in an ELT course is truly an awesome experience: The students set off on a voyage that takes them to the inside of the English Teaching world. They want to discover the magic that worked in them so that they can help others become successful language users. And indeed, after five months of intensive work they reach their destination, from “Being Students” to “Becoming Teachers”.

ELT Letters• Judith Fuertes, Tutor

When a new ELT course starts (January and July), the 1st or 2nd day of classes I give my students a letter that has been sent to them from an unknown person. Who are these unknown people who write them a letter? What’s the content of these letters?

They are letters written to them by the ELT students that have recently finished the same course. The main purpose of these letters is to give them advice on how to deal with the course, but of course they include jokes, commentaries and anything that they want. Some of them are very serious, typed on A4 paper. Others are on colourful paper, folded in a peculiar way, in special envelopes, with pictures, stickers, etc. But all of them are sincerely written, expressing the feelings they have after finishing a course which can be the beginning of a new life for some of them.

I have been a BRITÁNICO student for two years now. I started at “Intermediate 1” and I was really happy when I got my FCE certificate. But the story doesn’t end there, in fact it was the beginning of a new path in which English takes the major role, because I decided to take the ELT Course and become an English Teacher.

Over the last 5 months I have studied hard to achieve my goal. The ELT Course has been very helpful and challenging for me as I didn’t have any experience in teaching. When we had Teaching Practice with real students, I could really make the most of my teacher’s experience and put into practice all the things that I have learnt.

ELT provided us with all the facilities we needed during the process of becoming teachers. They gave us access to the Teachers’ library, which was very useful when we had to

Most people can look back at their own schooldays and identify teachers they thought were good, so when I decided to join the ELT course I wondered who a good teacher was.

Now that I have completed the course, I realize that a good teacher is one who makes himself progressively unnecessary. Indeed, not only have I learned a lot about how to teach English during my training but I have also made really good friends. I can still remember our first day of classes when we were all strangers (I can’t believe that I ended up missing such good friends) and our first Teaching Practice when we were all nervous since it was our first teaching experience. These memorable experiences made this five-month course unforgettable.

Lastly, I would like to thank my mother for supporting me all this time and also special thanks to Miss Judith, who was my trainer during this course, from whom I learned a lot about teaching.

En mayo continuamos ofreciendo a nuestros estudiantes el programa Tiempo libre en la modalidad de artes manuales, con el deseo de promover la práctica de la artesanía, la cual viene deparando muchas satisfacciones a sus participantes. Carmen Farfán Carrasco, alumna del Básico 2 del centro de Surco, a nombre de sus compañeros, dijo: “Quiero agradecer al BRITÁNICO por poder participar en este programa y a los profesores por su disposición para ofrecer novedosos talleres, que son importantes en la formación integral de los alumnos y a la vez contribuyen con la salud mental de cada uno de nosotros”.

Hemos querido compartir con ustedes estas expresiones, ya que son también nuestros deseos poniendo al alcance de los estudiantes una variada oferta de artes manuales tanto decorativas como utilitarias, enseñando técnicas tradicionales así como las nuevas tendencias, en un espacio adecuado, con las herramientas, materiales, y accesorios. que sean precisos para que cada uno pueda expresarse en otro lenguaje.

Last month I was in charge of running a workshop in Lima, “Teaching the Spoken Language”. We discussed how to deal with the most common speaking problem our students usually have. All teachers contributed useful ideas based on their own experience and participated actively so we benefited from each other.

When students meet on the first day of classes, it’s always wise to plan activities which will help them get to know each other. These activities will make them relax and create a fun environment where learning will be encouraged. Choosing the right activity is very important. This is why, thanks to the encouragement of our Head and Deputy Head, Monterrico teachers were recently involved in a collaborative workshop in which we discussed and exchanged ideas, so as to know which activities were successful for this purpose. These “ice-breaking” activities are ideal to get our students going first thing in the lesson and encourage them to move around. Remember: “Knowing your students is the key to your success”.

Con estas premisas, visitamos los centros de San Borja y Los Jardines donde los asistentes pintaron en trupán cuadros decorados con hojas naturales y una lamparita rústica, respectivamente. También en el centro de Surco los participantes aplicaron color, esta vez en simpáticas vaquitas de cerámica que alegrarán un espacio en el hogar. En el centro de Lima ofrecimos una clase de bisutería con amplia asistencia del alumnado, y en Pueblo Libre los estudiantes intervinieron en la preparación de un pie de guanábana que endulzó los paladares.

Así transcurrió un mes más, gratificados y motivados para continuar ofreciendo novedades en este programa que es de todos nosotros.

Working as a team• Nancy Campos, Head of centre

Professionalism, motivation, commitment, responsibility, enthusiasm, among others are the significant elements I see in the people I work with every day, and I am sure you notice when interacting with our staff. I would like to thank all my staff for their continuous support and commitment and our students for trusting and choosing us to guide them in the process of learning a new language.

I have been privileged to have been involved in education at the BRITÁNICO. Being in education has allowed me to work with different kinds of students and work with teachers cooperatively in order to provide you with the best resources and tools to help you achieve the goal of learning English. I love the variety of work and opportunities the BRITÁNICO gives us. There is also a great friendly working environment.

Through these different articles we would like you to become familiar with some of the activities and objectives we are involved in daily and make you part of our team. Teachers, students, Deputy Heads and personnel from the SAC and reception area want to tell you a bit of what we do and what you have also participated in showing your enthusiasm, creativity and great ideas put into practice.

¿QUÉ PASA EN LOS CENTROS?

Some years ago, I studied at the BRITÁNICO as well. I remember my Advanced course group, my teacher and the many hours I spent studying for the FCE. I get to relive this through my students now, and I totally understand the anxiety and the fear, but also the hope and finally the pride at passing such an important exam.

Some years back we had dictionaries in book form; now my students use their e-dictionaries or i-phones to look up new words. I used to listen to cassettes and work on exercises in my workbook; learners now have CD ROMs and audio books. Years ago we did all our practice for FCE on past exams; now there are web pages and downloadable materials to be used. One thing hasn’t changed, though, and that’s the feeling of achievement for everything that’s done well: a piece of writing, once you finally understand the listening activity, the first time you are able to work out the key word transformation perfectly, and most gratifying, passing the exam, perhaps with an A... Many students have already been through this, and many more will in time. Having been there myself, my advice is that you take advantage of everything the BRITÁNICO has to offer: SAC, library, workshops, extra material, the help of your teachers and partners - there is a lot to support your learning. Above all, believe in yourself.

Working at BRITÁNICO San Isidro has been the best experience in my life. I am really committed to teaching here and learning from my colleagues day by day.

Something that I love about this branch is that teachers are proposing and participating all the time in cross-curricular activities related to important days or daily aspects as important as environmental issues (my favourite ones because I studied Biology at university). For instance, last April a contest related to “Earth Day” was organized. It gave our students the opportunity to find out how they could contribute to our planet’s maintenance.

A big group of my students enthusiastically participated in the contest and discovered “they could prepare better and healthier food at home than the kind sold at places like KFC”, as Daniela Pulache from B6 claimed. These kinds of activities motivate our students and encourage them to visit our library in order to look for information which not only helps them improve their English but increases their cultural background.

Durante mi primer año en el BRITÁNICO de San Isidro tuve la opor tun idad de leer un artículo escrito por el profesor Tim Wallington ( B r i t á n i c o

Newsletter 1997) en el cual éste era descrito como “un recinto dotado de una atmósfera única, internacional, moderna y tradicional”. Los orígenes de este centro se remontan a 1972, año en el cual el Consejo Directivo, en la necesidad de encontrar un local que sirviese de punto intermedio entre los ya existentes en Lima y Miraflores, aprueba la adquisición del terreno ubicado en la Avenida Arequipa 3495, en ese entonces propiedad de los esposos Izaga Izaga. También se consideró la posibilidad de adquirir la casa ubicada en la Avenida Arequipa 3445, pero esta idea no prosperó sino hasta el año 2000. En este lapso de 37 años, Británico San Isidro ha sido un nexo entusiasta entre la actividad cultural británica y la del Perú, y es así que ha recibido la visita de personalidades de la talla del escritor Aldous Huxley, el filósofo Bertrand Russell o el compositor Benjamin Britten. En el plano académico, es en San Isidro donde se encuentran la Biblioteca Central, el ERC (biblioteca especializada para profesores de inglés, la más variada en el Perú), así como el Teacher Training Team Centre (este último en la Av. Arequipa 3445), donde nuestros profesores toman cursos de especialización en metodología y/o suficiencia en el idioma inglés. Muchos son los profesionales que han pasado por el BRITÁNICO de San Isidro, y cada uno ha dejado un recuerdo inolvidable en los pasillos y las aulas. Acá algunos testimonios:

Se dice que con el pasar de los años los edificios adquieren vida propia, tal es el caso de las grandes universidades y los templos en todo el mundo. Me gusta pensar que mi centro, en su propia manera, se ganará un sitial similar. Ya sea por la deliciosa arquitectura de la entrada, por la atmósfera cargada de agradables memorias y ambiciosos proyectos, o por cada uno de los profesores, alumnos y todo el personal administrativo, de mantenimiento, servicios y vigilancia que hace de éste un lugar muy cálido y relajante. El BRITÁNICO de San Isidro es hoy por hoy una casona-edificio en la

cual trabajar y estudiar son actividades divertidas y productivas. ¿Qué se dará en el futuro? Si nos visitaron Aldous Huxley y Benjamin Britten, ¿por qué no habríamos de recibir a J. K. Rowling o a alguna banda del mejor rock británico? Soñar no cuesta nada y la historia de la Avenida Arequipa 3495, en retrospectiva y citando al gran Virgilio, puede resumirse en Ad altiora, et meliora, semper: siempre más alto y mejor.

Recepción y SAC de San Isidro

Si alguien me pregunta qué es lo que más recuerdo de estos meses en el BRITÁNICO de San Isidro, respondería inmediatamente los momentos compartidos con el personal del centro y los alumnos… son tantos recuerdos que es difícil poder relatarlos en pocas palabras.

Son diversas actividades las que hemos realizado… Karaokes, Valentine’s, Spring, Xmas, Abbamania y Teachers’, donde alumnos y profesores interactuaron mostrando sus destrezas en el canto, además de practicar el idioma de una manera divertida sin temor a equivocarse. También concursos como: spelling contest, tongue twisters y mini sagas, en los que los profesores muy animados vieron el esfuerzo de sus alumnos y la mejora en la práctica del idioma, ¡qué más decir de lo gratificante de esta experiencia! Y charlas para los alumnos de Avanzado: Changes in FCE y Tips for FCE, en las que se dieron pautas de los cambios en el examen.

Los profesores también participaron activamente en una tarde criolla, una noche de Halloween y una noche de talentos, donde se lucieron en el canto, el baile y la actuación.

Es muy grato para nosotros saber de la acogida que tienen todas nuestras actividades, agradecemos a todos los participantes y los invitamos a las próximas… Lo que se viene ¡será mucho mejor!

CAE…. A challenge!• Mariela Linares, Ex CAE Student

Throughout my English learning process at the BRITÁNICO I never thought that I would reach the CAE level. I had already finished Advanced and I had no intention of entering a BRITÁNICO classroom again, not because I didn’t want to, but because I didn’t have much time. However, I decided that I wanted to take the CAE exam, so the wisest idea was to register in the CAE course. I remember the first day I came in, I saw new faces and with a bit of shyness, I sat at the back. The weeks passed and those new faces started to become familiar to me. Our teacher, Patricia Olivares, always beginning the class with a smile, made us work hard, despite creating a relaxing environment where we felt confident to improve our English skills and make our weak points strong. I have no regrets about sharing those five months with each of my classmates and we have the challenging part, the exam, but we have learnt to believe in ourselves.

Las instalaciones de nuestro centro de San Isidro, son muy acogedoras y cálidas, además el trato humano de cada uno de los integrantes del Staff administrativo, se caracteriza por la unión y fraternidad, lo cual nos impulsa a realizar cada vez mejor nuestras labores.

Las actividades diarias a las cuales nos enfrentamos, son siempre nuevas experiencias, el trato con todo tipo de clientes, el aprendizaje de variada información y realización de diversas actividades, nos motivan y hacen de nuestro centro laboral, una parte más de nuestras vidas.

No está demás mencionar la variedad de beneficios que nuestra red de centros ofrece a todos su alumnado, personal

docente y administrativo; es por esto que el SAC es una parte muy importante de cada centro, en el cual no sólo te encuentras con un personal muy bien capacitado, sino también una ayuda constante fortalecida por abundante material fundamental para el aprendizaje del idioma inglés.
