Ridley/Trudgett Netball Gala Day

The Ridley/Trudgett Netball Gala Day was held at

Victoria Oval on Thursday 10 August. We were fortunate

enough to enter 3 teams into the gala day this year. The

5/6 division 1 team played brilliantly all day, winning

about half of their games. The 5/6 division 2 team were

runners up, coming in close with a count back. It was

wonderful to see students on this team who have never

played netball before play absolutely wonderful games.

The 3/4 team were undefeated and won their division.

Congratulations to all these students who displayed

wonderful sportsmanship throughout the day and

enjoyed playing netball. Thank you to Mrs Higgins and

Mrs Perry, who gave their time at lunch to train these

teams and for the organisation to get these teams to the

gala day.

Science 4/5/6 This term in Science, 4/5/6 Lorikeets have been learning about cyclones with Mrs McCormack. During our lesson we watched a video about cyclone Yasi and the amount of destruction it left behind. The class then had to pretend that we were weather reporters covering the story for a news team. When we finished writing our reports we drew a picture of our own interpretations of a cyclone. Some of the class drew the eye of the storm and others drew the devastation left behind. During the week of 14 to 18 August students from Warren and Gilgandra attended a Shearer and Wool Handling

training day conducted by Australian Wool Innovation at Haddon Rig, Warren.

We wish to extend a huge thank you to Haddon Rig for making their shearing shed and sheep available at such a

busy time. In addition, shearing champions Mike Pora and Ian Elkington and wool handling expert Andrew Newstead,

from AWI, were brilliant and deserve thanks and congratulations for conducting such a well organised program.

Students from Warren Central who took part were Hayden Brewer, Stephen Owens, Mitchell George and Tom Fuller.

The students were keen to learn and all worked hard from the beginning.

They worked well with the team in the shed and they should be proud of how they represented themselves throughout

the week.

By the end of the week most were able to shear a sheep by themselves and were justifiably proud of their

achievements.

This annual event is continually evolving and improving and should provide great opportunities for students in the

future.

The next step in the program is to take students to the general shearing in November to further enhance their wool

handling skills.

WARREN CENTRAL SCHOOL PAGE 13 RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE LEARNERS

As part of the National Science Week, Cuberider in association with Australian National University (ANU) hosted a free

one day event at Siding Springs Observatory in Coonabarabran on 17 August for students in years 7-10.

Warren Central School students were quick to take this opportunity to be part of an exciting and collaborative “one of its

kind” excursion, promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) with other schools from around

the region.

The students had a magnificent view on the way up to the Warrumbungles and were welcomed by the tour contacts

Amanda Wherrett and Solange Cunin, who had organised the event.

An indigenous elder, Sue Ellen Tighe welcomed us to their country and related the story of the “ Emu in the Sky” and

linking it to how Aboriginal people knew when to gather emu eggs as well as fishing and gathering food.

After morning tea, students walked to the Faulkes telescope at LCOGT, where Peter (the telescope manager) showed

the students one of the largest robotic telescopes in the world. It was the only telescope dome that opened up in a

“clam” like fashion. Some students even did some “snow cleaning” of the gigantic mirrors with carbon dioxide pressure

guns.

This was followed by a 3D movie on “Our Sun” before lunch. We then visited the AAT gallery and students had fun

reading all about telescopes and marvelling at model structures.

After lunch, students watched solar flares and sunspots through special filtered telescopes as well as being introduced

to the high tech data analysis regarding the solar cycle of the Sun.

We noticed that there was only one telescope which was not dome shaped and this was remotely controlled through an

app on the phone. It was something like in the movies as we watched the telescope shelter open up and the telescope

remotely controlled by such advances in technology.

After the afternoon tea break, we had a session with an aspiring radio astronomer, Kallie Noonan who talked about the

Solar System and shared some amazing photos of objects that existed in the Universe, such as variable stars and

supernovas.

When it was dark , the students peered through telescopes to see Saturn and Jupiter. After other schools left, Warren

students were eager to learn more on constellations of stars that surrounded us on the clear night. Ryan, a PhD

student, was more than happy to point out and name the constellations. In the midst, students saw a shooting star to

add to their excitement.

I would like to thank Mrs Rush and Steve the bus driver for helping out on the day. All the students came back with

positive feedback.

Here is what some students had to say:

Sophie Hopkins: Going to the Siding Springs Observatory was the most amazing experience I have had. It was a

great day talking and looking at all of the planets.

Stephanie Squire: The Siding Springs Observatory was a wonderful place to go and visit. We were able to see some

amazing telescopes and technology as well as listening to astronomers explain how they operate and what they do. It

was a great day and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Mitchell Eather: Seeing the planets at night was the best thing for me. Saturn and Jupiter looked awesome.

Kallie –Lee Daley: I really enjoyed my day seeing the planets in the sky.

Taylah Reid: I liked seeing the stars up and close and how the telescopes operated was just an amazing experience.

Lauren Brewer: We were able to learn and experience what it is like to be an astronomer. It

was an amazing and fun day, and I learnt heaps.

Madison Davis: I loved seeing the planets so clear and beautiful. It was such a great day.

Zoie Rookledge: My favourite part of Siding Springs Observatory was star gazing.

There is so much to learn.

Parents of Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 will soon receive an information letter home about the upcoming NAPLAN Online

Readiness Test.

This will be a trial for all NSW schools, to test their readiness for NAPLAN moving to an online format in 2018.

This test will be held in Week 8 of Term 3 (4th - 8th September).

Parents and students can access the NAPLAN online Demonstration site at

https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/naplan-online/naplan-online-public-demonstration-site

The National Assessment Program (NAP), which includes NAPLAN, is run at the direction of the Education Council and

is an important measure through which governments, education authorities and schools can determine if young

Australians are meeting important education outcomes.

Warren Central School is currently evaluating our current school plan and we would like some feedback from our

parents. We have sent an email to parents, but some parents would not have received this as we do not currently have

an email address on file. If you have not provided this email, please get in touch so we can send it to you. This will also

allow us to send other important information to you in the future.
