WARREN CENTRAL SCHOOL RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE LEARNERS All lined up and ready to go! There was not a tear in sight at the first of three orientation sessions for Kindergarten 2015 students last Friday. Kindergarten teacher Mrs Whiteley put it down to the Transition to Kindergarten Program that runs all year between the preschool, Little Possums and the school. It was a busy morning of craft, computers, singing and stories for the future Kindergarten students and at the end of the first session the unanimous verdict was they’d be back again next week for another "kindergarten practice". We look forward to seeing everyone again this Friday at 9.30am. The next dates and times for children attending the Kindergarten Orientation Program this year are: Friday 31 October 9:30am – 12:30pm Friday 7 November 9:00am – 2:50pm Children must have enrolment forms completed and handed in to the office at Warren Central School to attend these sessions. If you have not already collected an enrolment package they are available at Warren Central School Office or the Preschool. We look forward to seeing all the children enjoying themselves and participating in a number of wonderful activities. Please contact Mrs Whiteley for any further information. Mrs M. KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION 2015 Since the introduction of the PBL band system, day one this term, we have seen an increase in positive behaviours displayed throughout our school by our students. The students are rewarded under the three PBL focus areas; Respectful, Responsible Learners by means of a teal band. Students acrew these bands for displaying positive behaviours during school. HOW DOES THE BAND SYSTEM WORK? When the students gain three teal bands they trade these for a pink band. The students then gain teal bands to continue trading up gain three pink bands. Once they have three pink bands the students trade up to Purple bands and receive a merit card for their continued efforts

K-6 News - Respectful Responsible Learners Craft Groups Every Thursday all K – 6 students participate in craft groups working on many different activities. Each group has approximately 10 students and some examples of items being made are cross stitch patches, papier mache puppets, “paddle pop stick” pencil tins, decoupage boxes, scrap booking cards and decorated Christmas trees. We are very appreciative and thrilled to have Mrs Leman coordinating a sewing group and would like to thank her for her support and valuable time. Mrs Fisk and Mrs Ridley are also coordinating a group each and we are grateful for their expertise demonstrating specific crafts to their groups.

2/3 Science In Science with Mrs Perry 2/3 have been studying the topic ‘Material World’. Students were asked to design and make something from various materials. The item had to protect something, transport something or keep something dry. Some students covered all of these criteria. First, students had to draw their design in their books and label the drawing with the materials they were going to use. They were then able to begin the task of making. These photos show the proud students with their designs.

“Hat on, play on” With the approach of the warmer weather we will be again closely monitoring the wearing of hats for outdoor activities. Students without a school hat are required to sit under the shelter and are not permitted in the playground during breaks. Please take this opportunity to check your children’s hats for labels, size etc. New hats are available through the front office for $12 each. School Swimming Scheme This extremely important and worthwhile program is running again this year and permission notes and information are being given this week to students who are to be involved. The program will run from Monday 17 November through to Friday 28 November. The program caters for a range of swimming abilities and also teaches correct stroke, lifesaving strategies and swimming techniques. The students will be taught by certified Austswim instructors and this is a wonderful opportunity for those students involved. Please assist us in the organisation of the scheme by returning forms and money as soon as possible. Warren Arts Council Show On Tuesday this week we were extremely fortunate to watch an outstanding show called “Uh oh Tony” brought to us courtesy of Outback Arts and the Warren Arts Council. It was a fun filled and very enjoyable show that had the students laughing along with all the antics of Tony. We would like to thank Outback Arts and the Warren Arts Council for funding this show for us. We are very appreciative and thrilled for the opportunity to watch a live show.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Our wonderful Respectful, Responsible Learners in K – 6 are already displaying arms loaded with teal, pink and purple bands. Congratulations to those students who are continually Respectful, Responsible Learners. To receive a band, students must be in school uniform Monday - Thursday and on Friday in sports uniform. At the end of each term ALL bands, except Rainbow, must be handed in to be washed and ready to be distributed the next term. It is not financially viable to allow students to keep all the bands collected each term. In terms 1, 2 and 3 the Rainbow rewards day will be held on the Tuesday of the last week of each term and in Term 4 it will be held on the Tuesday of the second last week. Students are encouraged to trade their bands each day so we have a better turnover of bands, especially Teal bands. No more than 6 teal bands can be traded at each time ie 6 teal bands = 2 pink bands. Once a trade has been completed students must wait until the next trade time to exchange bands. A third pink, purple or yellow band cannot be traded immediately for the next level band but must be traded the following day. This allows students to wear the three bands of each colour to proudly display their achievements for a day before trading up. Principal Awards Harry Hammond and Ruth Cant were the recipients of the Principal’s Award at the Week 3 Assembly. Congratulations Harry Harry is the first to complete the 200 sight words with 100% accuracy challenge in the MultiLit Program. Class teacher Lyn Westgarth and program co-ordinator Nikki Duncan are thrilled with his progress.

Dance classes build more than fitness Dancing improves strength, flexibility and stamina but our students taking part in weekly dance classes are finding it offers unexpected benefits.

Local dance teacher Kirby McCutcheon has been invited by the school to run extra-curricular hip hop classes for a number of students from years 7 to 10 this term and says they are enthusiastically embracing the opportunity.

“I’m sure the girls expected to be improving their physical fitness but dance is also a fantastic creative outlet for them. I can see the girls growing in self confidence as they become more at ease expressing themselves through movement and contributing their own ideas for choreography,” observes Kirby.

She adds that not only is there an age difference between the girls but that only half of them have any prior dance experience.

“This means that they have different levels of pickup of the dance moves so they need to help each other; developing team work and inter-personal skills. The girls themselves are saying they are building closer friendships through the whole experience.”

The routine is due to be performed at the school’s presentation night at the end of the year and the girls are nervously looking forward to their dance debut.

“It’s been a really rewarding experience working with such lovely girls and I’m looking forward to seeing them shine on the night.”

Regional Student Representative Council Meeting Students from Cobar and Gilgandra High Schools' student representative councils (SRC), together with our own SRC, met through the week to work on solutions to some of the important issues in their respective schools. The focus of the day was 'student voice', providing students the opportunity to practise using problem-solving and leadership skills and strategies. Mrs M. Irving - Community Liaison

What’s happening in our school?

During the last week of Term 3 the PBL rewards excursion was attended by over 60 students from K-12. Dubbo Ten Pin Bowling was the chosen venue for the day’s outing. As per PBL guidelines the students drive the rewards days as they have earned their reward at the end of the term. The double decker bus ride was an added bonus on the day as many students had never been on-board such a special bus and so this added to the excitement of the outing. It is hoped that the rewards day for Term 4 will be based in Warren. Some suggestions so far from secondary students have been; a BBQ at the swimming pool with activities and games and a fun activity day at the oval. The band system remains very popular and successful. Students are collecting bands quite quickly this term which is great to see as this means that our students are continuing to demonstrate their ability to be respectful, responsible learners. During weeks 5 and 6 this term, the Year 6 students from our school and St Marys Primary School will be attending four transition days here at Warren Central School. Over these four days the students will experience all subject areas through the guidance of our specialised secondary teaching staff. This will include hour long lessons comprising of cooking, woodwork and physical education, not to mention the key learning areas of English, Mathematics and Science. These students will learn all about our PBL incentives for using appropriate behaviour in all areas of the school and when they begin next year in Term One, they too will enjoy the rewards every day of being in an environment of respectful, responsible learners. The new PBL logo featuring our mascot ‘Aquila’ the Wedge-tailed eagle has almost reached its final stages. It is an innovative design that will represent our students “soaring to great heights”. Very soon this logo will be seen all around the school and it has been suggested that this logo could be placed on pencil cases, hats etc as further rewards for students excelling at our school. This week the SRC are hosting the Regional Meeting at our school. This is a great opportunity for our school leaders to demonstrate their leadership skills while demonstrating to others how to be a respectful, responsible learner. Photos of this day will be in the next Jumbunna – stay tuned!
