7.30pm in the School Library

All parents and caregivers are most welcome to attend these meetings, which provide the wider school community with a forum for discussion as we work together with staff to sustain and further develop the best possible learning environment for our students.

The discussions are complemented by presentations from staff, focusing on various aspects of education and, in particular, what is on offer at Pennant Hills High School.

If any parents or caregivers would like to receive the agenda and minutes of the meetings, please email [email protected] to arrange.

not able to attend this year due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Suffice to say our leaders were very well supported on the day.

Thank you to our staff who, once again, rose to the occasion to ensure that this important event in our calendar was celebrated with precision and the formality it deserved. Thank you to Mrs Payne for overseeing the event and a special thank you to Mrs Erickson, CAPA Teacher who attended in her own time to photograph the induction for our families. The link to photos will be emailed to all SLC students and their families in due course. A video link will also accompany the email which we hope will be enjoyed by all.

Year 11 Drama Production Last week saw the culmination of hard work done by our Year 11 Drama students brought to fruition as they directed, produced and performed Summer of the Aliens for students and staff.

Students worked tirelessly in the lead up to the show, including attending workshops run throughout the school holidays. It was an extremely engaging performance that challenged the audiences with some difficult and complex topics. The cast showed maturity beyond their years which gave us an opportunity to consider the depth of what we were being presented.

Congratulations to the entire cast and crew on a polished production. Thank you to Mr Travis Williams, Drama Teacher who coordinated the exceptional theatrical experience.

Years 7 - 9 Parent Teacher Interviews All families were emailed information regarding the new process for interviews, which were previously held face to face, and are now available by request via email to the school.

Please ensure the following information is included in your email to enable the request to be redirected efficiently: name and grade of the student; name/s of the teacher/s; contact details such as telephone numbers; and information regarding availability.

We thank you for your continued support and understanding.

Year 12 Trial HSC Examinations The examinations are scheduled to commence next Monday 3 August and run for two weeks ending Friday 14 August 2020.

We wish all Year 12 students well as they enter this key phase of their preparation for the 2020 Higher School Certificate. By all reports, they are well prepared and study routines are on schedule.

I encourage parents and caregivers to ensure plenty of blueberries are on hand and good sleep habits are maintained, as they progress through their tests.

Ross Warren Principal

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome back! I am delighted to welcome our students, staff, parents and caregivers back to teaching and learning at Pennant Hills High School. Term 3

is traditionally very busy with the subject selection process, HSC Trials and farewelling our Year 12 cohort on the calendar, to name a few.

As we see daily, there is a new sense of urgency around the importance of maintaining vigilance in our personal hygiene habits in response to COVID-19. We will continue to manage our schedule around the current restrictions, ensuring that strict adherence to the rules is maintained at all times for the safety of our community.

The great news is that we edge closer to business as usual this term, as we return to some familiar routines. The Music Ensembles program and sport have resumed, and our canteen has welcomed back its volunteers. The advice regarding non-essential visitors to school remains the same - that they are to be kept to a minimum for emergencies only. All visitors to our offices, even if only briefly, are required to sign in the External Visitor to School Site register for safety reasons. I thank our school community for your continued assistance and understanding.

Year 10 Subject Selection The process of selecting subjects for Year 11, 2021 is now currently in full swing. Last Wednesday, Year 10 had an information session with Mr Symons, Careers Adviser, our faculty Head Teachers and myself to explain the importance of choosing both courses that are needed for their future together with ones which they will enjoy doing.

Additionally as I intimated last term, we have now published the Course Selection Hub on our website. In the hub, students, parents and caregivers will find information provided by NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) regarding the requirements for the Higher School Certificate (HSC) together with last week’s PowerPoint presentations from Mr Symons and myself. Each faculty is also represented with a tile which links to the courses offered. There is an overview of each subject with considerable detail, to enable families to make an informed decision.

Mr Symons has begun the personalised interview process with students, discussing NESA requirements and potential post school pathways. A reminder that subjects selections are to be completed online by next Monday 3 August 2020.

My advice for students continues to be: read all the information available carefully, speak to your teachers and Head Teachers as they are your most valuable resource, and choose subjects that genuinely interest you and that you think you will be good at.

Thank you to Mr Symons, our Head Teachers, Administrative and I.T. staff, who, ably led by Mrs Payne, Deputy Principal, ensured that the online adaptation of our usual face to face process was executed efficiently and seamlessly.

2020-2021 SLC Induction The Student Leadership Council (SLC) Induction ceremony held last Friday was an enormous success. Our leaders were joined by students from Years 7 and 11 who fulfilled two roles on the day - to congratulate their peers and to offer support and encouragement in place of our parents, caregivers, families and friends who were

WELCOME BACK TO CAPA FOR TERM 3

Visual Arts Exhibition Update It is unfortunate that we are not able to present the Visual Arts Exhibition this year as we continue to practise social distancing and our Higher School Certificate (HSC) body of works are delayed in terms of the final completion date due to the ramifications of COVID-19. All of our Visual Arts and Photographic and Digital Media (PDM) students are busy working in class and we are all enjoying face-to-face teaching and learning. The artworks that students are currently producing will be on display at the 2021 Visual Arts Exhibition. This gives us all something very exciting to look forward to!

HSC CAPA Update The HSC Drama students will be performing their Individual Projects on Wednesday 19 August from 5.00pm-6.00pm and the HSC Music students will be performing their musical items on Friday 28 August in Period 4. At this stage, our audiences for these exciting events will consist of staff and students.

Our HSC Visual Arts students will be submitting their completed body of works for HSC Marking on 14 September. Currently, the Visual Arts staff are working on a way to exhibit the Year 12 2020 body of works in a virtual manner. All of our Year 12 CAPA students have been working hard to fulfil their commitments to their studies and we wish them well for their upcoming Trial Exams and their HSC Exams.

Year 11 Drama Production Congratulations to Mr Williams, Drama Teacher and the Year 11 Drama class on their excellent production of Louis Nowra’s ‘Summer of the Aliens’. The class worked tirelessly over many weeks, including the school holidays, to perform the play to a restricted audience last week. They also performed a matinee session to two Year 11 Advanced English classes and the Year 10 Drama class which was very well received.

The production was essentially driven by the students in terms of acting, directing, advertising, set design and construction, as well as light and sound. It was a magnificent effort that will certainly prove to be a beneficial experience as these students move towards their HSC Drama studies.

Congratulations to Mr Williams who has mentored his class magnificently. It was very apparent that they all work cohesively, with passion and commitment. We thank him for his dedication and professionalism. Thank you to the staff and students who attended the performances. Although disappointing that families were not allowed to be included, the cast and crew were well supported.

Year 11 Visual Arts

Our Visual Arts students worked very effectively in Term 2 learning online and then face to face, exploring and developing their sculptural skills to produce their delightful Perils of the Sea sculptures. Students started with some private research on pollution of the oceans of the world and then collected plastics as the media for their artworks. As a prerequisite, each student needed to include a plastic drink bottle in their sculpture of a sea creature.

Some of the sea creatures included jellyfish, stingrays, fish, turtles and fish of the deep. The sea creatures were mutated and made of plastics along with a little wire, paint and beads. Essentially, the sea creatures have become the plastics that pose an enormous threat to their existence. As a final consideration to the art-making process, the students then documented their sculptural forms as an A4 photograph, placing an emphasis on shadows, lighting effects on the form, and close-up/micro views.

The Perils of the Sea sculptures are currently displayed in the Visual Arts block along with a selection of other artworks recently completed by other year groups. We will also be showing these engaging sculptures at the 2021 Visual Arts Exhibition.

Year 7 Ceramics Some of our Year 7 classes have recently finished their pinchpot-derived ceramic pieces that included echidnas and pufferfish as the subject matter. The classes started making the form of their ceramic pieces in March. When learning went online, the Visual Arts staff carefully wrapped all the clay work and wet them down with the hope that students could work with the clay again once they returned school. This proved to be a successful strategy and we finished the echidnas/pufferfish, firing them twice: once as a bisque fire, after the students had finished making their forms, and then as a glaze firing, after they had under-glazed/glazed their ceramics. Year 7 enjoyed the somewhat extended process and learnt new ceramic skills along the way. It was a very enjoyable experience for all.

Pennant Hills High School Canteen is very happy to advise that we are now accepting lunch orders online. All you need to do is download the app Qkr! by MasterCard, set up a profile and start ordering.

Lunch orders can be placed daily no later than 9.15am or for your convenience you can order up to 2 weeks in advance. You pay online via the Qkr! by MasterCard app and your child can then collect their lunch from the dedicated lunch order window.
