WHAT’S ALL THIS BUZZ ABOUT CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE? Leadership Sioux Center focuses one session each year on the topic of diversity. Participants come into the session assuming we are just going to talk about race. However, they leave the session with a much greater understanding and realize that diversity is so much more than race. It’s your background, it’s your marital status, it’s your socio-economic status, it’s privilege, it’s culture. Year after year, the session on diversity ranks as the participants’ #1 Leadership Sioux Center session. This year we were blessed to have Rahn Franklin, Director of Multicultural Student Development, NWC, introduce the topic of Cultural Intelligence (CQ) during our session on diversity. The “aha” moments happened several times that day and I admit, once I started digging into this topic, I was hooked. I may live under a rock, but until that LSC session on diversity, I had not heard much about Cultural Intelligence (CQ) flying around my circles. But now that I’m paying more attention, I’m seeing it on social media, reading about it on blog posts and hearing it discussed on podcasts. It’s becoming the “thing to know more about” in business. So, what is CQ? Cultural intelligence is the capability to function effectively across national, ethnic, and organizational cultures. It includes a way of measuring and improving the way we interact in different cultures. Why should we care? 90% of leading executives from 68 countries identified cross-cultural leadership as the top management challenge for the next century. Having a better understanding of CQ helps us navigate diverse markets, manage a multicultural work force and attract and retain top talent. We are excited to have Rahn present at our July chamber meeting to introduce the topic of Cultural Intelligence. If you then decide that you want to engage even more in this topic, we are offering 4 one-hour sessions this fall that will be a more in-depth awareness and training on CQ. You will learn and receive tools that you can bring back to your organization to improve your businesses’ CQ level. For more information on these sessions, please see page 2. Raised in NW Iowa on a family farm and livestock operation, we were taught the value of hard work, honesty, sound character, faith, family, and doing everything as if you were working for the Lord. We recognized that God put a love in us to construct and build. We loved projects and making improvements to our family operation.

Over the years, that love has turned into many concrete projects from concrete cattle mounds, poured bunks, bunkers, and foundations. That love then grew to projects off the operation such as: driveways, basement floors, garage floors, and house walls. We are passionate about building and serving others, and pouring concrete allows us to do both. It is rewarding to be able to work with different people on a variety of projects such as: parking lots for local ministries, residential driveways, commercial businesses, and the livestock operation.

WELCOME, CARYN

We’re excited to introduce Caryn Schouten at M Design & Promotions! Caryn brings years of experience working as an administrative assistant and payroll specialist and we look forward to better serving our clients by adding her unique strengths & abilities to the team! “I live north of Sioux Center with my husband, Micah and our three children, Alexa (11), Logan (8), and Katelyn (6). When I’m not working you’ll find me spending time with my family.

I graduated from Dordt University with an Administrative degree. For the first few years after graduation I worked in various positions in billing, insurance, and accounting. When my husband and I moved back to the area in 2006, I began work-ing for Interstates as an administrative assistant. There I enjoyed assisting project managers as well as handling the application, renewal and management of their electrical licenses.

With the birth of our second child in 2010, I transitioned to being at home full-time until our youngest celebrated her first birthday. At that time I joined Trans Ova Genetics where I have worked as a payroll specialist for the last 5 years. I’m excited to work with Jason & Emily and look forward to using my problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and customer service experience to help support clients!”

SIOUXNAMI WATERPARK WELCOMES SUMMER FUN-SEEKERSIowa’s newest waterpark is now open! Siouxnami Waterpark – complete with the state’s only aqua zip line, a lazy river, three new water slides, and a life-size floating alligator – is open Sioux Center.

Siouxnami offers fun for all, with the lazy river, the climbing wall over the water, the aqua zip-line over the deep pool, low and high diving boards, and more. Thrill seekers can enjoy a 212-foot-long body slide, a 253-foot tube slide, and a 64-foot speed slide. There’s a teen corner, concession stand, lounge chairs in the sun and shade, and plenty of pool space to enjoy the water.“Our goal with Siouxnami has always been to make it great for all ages, and we think we’ve done that,” said All Seasons Center director Dave Ruter. “It’s been exciting seeing kids, adults and families come to Sioux Center and experience the fun.”

Siouxnami connects with the existing outdoor and indoor pool areas at the All Seasons Center. These offer zero-depth children's pools, a slide pool with a waterfall, additional water slides, lap lanes, a hot tub, and diving boards.

NEWS & FASCINATING FACTSAbout our Members

The Sioux Center City Council has appointed David Krahling to serve as mayor, filling the seat of the late Mayor Dennis Walstra.

As mayor, Krahling will preside over city council meetings and work with the council and city leaders to create a long-term

vision for the community.

Krahling came to Sioux Center in 1984, taking a position teaching agriculture at Sioux Center Schools. He is married to Char and has worked the past 18 years at Interstates, where he is now in a role focusing on people development. Krahling previously served on the city council from 2006-2015. His appointment as mayor begins immediately.

“This is a daunting position to step into, even more so knowing the legacy Mayor Walstra has built here,” Krahling said. “Having had the opportunity to work with him, I will draw on that as well as my own experiences as I seek to lead in way that serves the citizens well.”

Krahling shared his great respect for the ongoing work of the Sioux Center city staff and council, and said the appointment to serve the community in this role is both humbling and exciting.

“We have an incredibly robust community with a diverse set of strengths and a history of progress through cooperation,” Krahling said. “Sioux Center is a great city of which to be mayor.”

The city council unanimously approved Krahling’s appointment at the June 18 council meeting.

“Dave will bring a high level of leadership and understanding to the table,” said Mayor Pro Tem Randy Vreugdenhil. “His background and ability to see big picture will serve our community well.”

WELCOME DR. KAYLEE LANGEL

Dr. Kaylee Langel was born and raised in Le Mars, Iowa and graduated from Le Mars Community High School. At a young age Dr. Langel can remember having the desire and passion to help others which lead her to nursing. She graduated from St. Luke’s College in Sioux City, Iowa with an associate degree in nursing, also known as a Registered Nurse. Dr. Langel then attended Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa to pursue her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and minoring in psychology. She knew she wanted to serve her community at a high level of education and therefore went on to attend graduate school at the University of Iowa where she studied for her Doctorate of Nursing. It was during this time that Dr. Langel felt she was being pulled in another direction and therefore switched her major to Chiropractic. Dr. Langel moved to Kansas City where she attended Cleveland University, graduating with her Doctorate of Chiropractic.

Throughout her time at Cleveland University, Dr. Langel attended seminars and received some certifications. She is certified in Webster technique through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. Webster is a technique which allows the doctor to align the

pelvis of pregnant women, preparing it for the birthing process. She is also certified in acupuncture, which is over 2,000+ years old, dating it back to ancient China and is used to help with physical, mental, and emotional conditions. Dr. Langel also attended several Motion Palpation Institute seminars. During her last year at Cleveland University she had the opportunity to treat patients at the Kansas City Care Clinic and was apart of a preceptorship at the VA Hospital in Kansas City. Along with being nationally board certified in chiropractic and physiotherapy, Dr. Langel is also a member of the American Chiropractic Association.

Her education, training, and certifications have allowed Dr. Langel to treat every member of the family, from infants, to pregnant moms, to senior citizens. Dr. Langel is excited to be back to her home roots and providing care and treatment to her community. In her free time Dr. Langel enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, being outdoors, attending her daughter’s sporting events, golfing and being with family.
