Yellowstone Historian Lee Whittlesey to Speak at Livingston Depot on the History of the National Park Service

Acclaimed historian and author Lee Whittlesey will speak at the Livingston Depot Wednesday, July 13 at 7 p.m. on the history of the National Parks Service, which celebrates the centennial this year of its foun-dation in 1916. The event, sponsored by the Park County Historical Society, the Yellowstone Gateway Muse-um, and the Livingston Depot Center, is a part of the Livingston celebration of the National Park Service cen-tennial and is free to the public. Whittlesey, the official Yellowstone Park historian for over a decade, has spent more than forty years re-searching and writing about the history of the Yellowstone region and is an international authority on Yellow-stone’s vast historical literature. In his career in Yellowstone prior to his historical capacity, he has also been a park archivist, ranger, tour guide, tour bus driver, and communications specialist. In addition, Whittlesey has authored numerous books and journal articles on Yellowstone including the popular “Death in Yellowstone “and his latest work on Cinnabar entitled, “Gateway to Yellowstone: The Raucous Town of Cinnabar.” As an authority on Yellowstone, Whittlesey has also appeared on ABC News, NBC News, the Discovery Channel, the Travel Channel, the History Channel, People Magazine, and the 2009 Ken Burns film,” The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.” All are invited to enjoy a rare opportunity to hear what promises to be an interesting and insightful historic lecture.

Presenters Sought for Special Centennial Photo Festival Yellowstone National Park calls on photographers to share their spectacular National Park Service (NPS) photos at the Yellowstone Centennial Photo Festival that will be held July 7, 2016 at the West Yellow-stone Visitor Information Center at 7 p.m. Whether amateur or professional, all photographers must register by Wednesday, July 6 at 5 p.m. with South District Naturalist Rich Jehle. Deputy Superintendent Steve Iobst Receives High Honor

Steven F. Iobst, deputy superintendent at Yellowstone National Park, received the Department of the Interior's (DOI) Meritorious Service Award during a recent event at Old Faithful. As the second highest honor bestowed by the Secretary of the Interior, the Meritorious Service Award is given to employees who make exceptional and continuing contribu-tions to DOI or one of its bureaus. National Park Service Director Jonathon B. Jarvis noted that Iobst, “Made significant and ongoing contributions to both facility and park management issues…and led efforts to improve the visitor experi-ence while protecting the resources of the park.” Iobst was appointed deputy superintendent of Yellowstone National Park on August 14, 2011. He directs day-to-day operations of the 2.2 million acre park, supervising the largest park operations program in the National Park Service. Operations include emergency medical, law enforcement, search and rescue, science and research, business management, resource education, youth programs, wildland and structural fire programs, as well as contracting, property control, and human resources. During his tenure at Yellowstone, Iobst has lead partnerships with leadership in the Federal Land Highways Program and with local and state governments in order to develop park road improvements, including the Beartooth Highway. In conjunction with the Yellowstone Park Foundation and their corporate donors, Iobst improved operations and sustainability for park facilities. These efforts resulted in the installation of a micro-hydro plant, reduced carbon energy sources at the historic Lamar Buffalo Ranch, installation of energy efficient windows in government facilities throughout the park, and improvements in the energy efficiency of the park vehicle fleet.

Gardiner Gateway, Phases I and II Project Update July 5, 2016

Construction activities are underway on the Gardiner Gateway, Phase I and II projects. The Phase I project straddles Yellowstone National Park and Park County, Montana in Gardiner, Montana. The Phase II project is in within Gardiner on Main Street, East Park Street and 1st street. Curb and gutter forms are to be constructed on East Park Street on the north side. Irrigation and electrical work will take place at East Park Street and Confluence Park. Construction of seat walls and fence removal around Confluence Park will also begin. Concrete for Curb and Gutter will be poured on the north side of East Park Street. Excavation may take place on 1st street for the curb and gutter forms to be placed. A section of East Main will be closed to traffic for electrical work. Pedestrians will be able to walk through East Main on designated walkways. A smaller roller may be used on East Park Street for compaction. But we are not anticipating the use of any vibratory equipment on site this week, although this is subject to change. Landscapers will be around the project site placing topsoil which may create localized one way traffic. Arch Park will still be closed to the public until the sod reaches maturity. Flaggers will be on site to assist and coordinate traffic and pedestrians. Access for Rafting Companies on East Park Street will continue through construction.

Public update meetings are held weekly on Mondays at 5:30 PM

at the Gardiner Community Center.
