T HE genesis of the present fount of Egyptian hieroglyphs is explained in the followextracts from the Preface to the earlier and far less complete Synopsis issuedD e ce m b er 1925 :

' The hieroglyphs contained in this synopsis were primarily designed for use in the prewriter 's Egyptian Grammar, short ly to be issued by the Clarendon Press, but i t is ho

that the new fount, the result of an amount of labour and research which few woaccurately gauge, may come to be widely used by students of Egyptian philology. services rendered by the Theinhardt fount, of which the catalogue, with a preface by RicLepsius, was published at Berlin in 1875, n a v e D e e n inest imable; but in two importantrespects, namely the size and the degree of palaeographical accuracy, the new Bannerfount claims to possess im po rtan t supe rior advan tages. Ta ke any book in wh ich Theinhardt hieroglyphs and European type are used side by side; so disproport ionatethese to one another that unsightly blank spaces necessarily occur whenever two lsucceed one another with adjacent hieroglyphs. This defect could only be obviated byemployment of hieroglyphic type on the same-sized bodies as the romans chosen for usealongside them, as is the case with our new fount. Then again, the Theinhardt fount avowedly based upo n Tw en ty-six th D yna sty originals. At the present day it is rightlythat in printing Egyptian texts a less debased series of forms ought to be available, andEighteen th D ynasty tomb s of Th eb es seemed to offer the best and richest materials . draw ings for the matrices are the work of M r. and M rs. de Garis D avies, whose nam eby-words for accuracy and skill in dra ug htsm ans hip . W ith unw earyin g perseverance they hsought for good originals amid the Theban necropolis, and it is upon these that, with excep tions, the new types have been m odelled. It is not to be denied tha t in a few clike the striking man, the frog, and the head-rest, other sources, or even the memory, h

had to be depended upon, but such instances are fortunately few, and, on the whole, forms shown in our type can be conscientiously recommended to the student as erepro duc tions of Eighte enth D yna sty originals, modified only to tha t small extent wredu ction to a small size rend ered im perative . Sho uld the new fount receive the welcwhich is expected, we shall seek to supplement it from time to time by the addition of s igns ; for the moment the 630 and more separate sorts will serve all ordinary needs.

' M y indeb tedne ss to my collaborators in this task is eno rm ous . W itho ut the hvouchsafed by M r. and M rs. de Ga ris D avies it could not have been accom plished atindeed, my own functions have been simply those of general supervision, criticism, I fear, an impo rtun ate exaction of the time and skill of oth ers. M essrs. Banne rma n hdealt with the un derta king in a spirit quite different from that of m ere comm ercial en terpand the skill and care exerted by their very able assistant Mr. W. J. Bilton have baltogether beyond praise. Obviously it lay in the hands of the craftsman wh o was actuto cut the matrices whether these should turn out a success or not, and Mr. Bilton has nbeen c onten t with any thing short of perfection, so far as his models e nabled him to achiev

The Synopsis from which the above extracts are derived exhibited only those sorts wwere to be used when printing in 12-point (pica). T h at size of typ e is, how ever, desirabl

only in books where hieroglyphs are being employed amidst European characters, asgram matical or lexicographic treatises, in com me ntaries on Egyptian texts and the like. the publication of hieroglyphic texts a larger size seems likely to prove less fatiguing to eyes, and for this reason all the sorts have been cut in 18-point (3-line nonp areil) as well. T h epresent Catalogue comprises all the matrices, both 18-point and 12-point, comprised in thefount down to the end of 1927. It is pro po sed to send ou t lists of add itional m atrices at th

beginning of every year to all printing firms and institutions that have acquired the rightuse the fount, so that they may be able to purchase type cast in these matrices from MesBann erman & Son, Ltd . , with wh om the matrices are deposi ted by D r. Alan H . Ga rditheir owner. Printe rs who have Egyptological m anu scripts to prin t are advised to examthe m early so as to find out wh at add itional sorts will be req uire d. If these rep rese nt signsufficient frequency to justify the cutting of special matrices, a list of desiderata should be sentto D r. Gardiner a t 9 Lansdowne R oad, Lon don , W . 11, together with such drawings or otherinform ation as m ay be available. Eve ry effort w ill th en be m ade to ad apt the draw ing s, oproduce new ones, so as to meet special requirements, and since the additional matrices wgo to enrich the fount as a wh ole, their cost will be borne by its ow ner. It m ust be maclear, however, that the production of new matrices, involving research into the most suitaforms, & c , dem and s considerable time , so that the longest possible period should be allowto the editor and to Messrs. Bannerman by the printer who prefers the request.

The various sizes contained in the following Catalogue are arranged so that those marke aare the normal full size to be used when printing in 18-point, and c the normal full size to beused when print ing in 12-point.

    Examples : f V 28, a in J H ; I V 28, c in IThe sorts marked c are in all cases two-thirds the size of those marked a, in accordance with

the general relation of 12-point to 18-point. T h e c-size as a rule pro vide s a satisfactory smallersize to be employed in 18-point when building up is necessary.

    Example : I V 28, c in J U i ^ i S IThe corresponding smaller size for use when printing in 12-point is always marked e;

exam ple 1 V 28, e in TlY^l- T h e size marked e, since it has to bear the same relation to cin 12-point print ing as c bears to a in 18-point printing, is consistently two-thirds the sizeof the c-sorts.

It sometimes happens, however, that a size intermediate between a and c is requiredfor 18-point printing, and a size intermediate between c and e for 12-point prin ting . Suchintermediate sizes are labelled b and d respectively, and always agree in their proportionsin the majority of cases b is three-quarters size of a, and d three-quarters size of c.

    E x a m p l e s : \J\ with \ M 17, b and jj W 25f, b looks better than jjj[ with 1 M 17 , c andjj W 25-f, c. Similarly in 12-point U with ^-forms fo r \ and I looks better than JJ withe-forms.

Only in a very few cases, e.g. & G 54 (c) and Aa 1 (c), are the b and d forms {p G 54, d ;e Aa 1, d) to be generally used in preference to the a and c form s. Th ese exceptions are dueto later revision, the norma l forms having originally been m ade too large. T h e rema

Our fount has been devised with the deliberate intention of setting a higher standard inprin ting of hierog lyphs. Fo r this reason some rema rks on the main principles to be obserwill not be out of place.

In building up groups like jj Z2 the low horizon tal signs m us t always range to top and

bo ttom respectively. Such settings as jj ZZ or jj =

or jj zz look extremely bad . T h e Egyptianpaid great attention to symmetry, and took great care to balance the spaces between the siIn o ur fount all the types are cut very close, so that spaces have always to be used. compositor must learn to vary his spaces according to the nature of the signs to be separfrom one anoth er. Con secutive tall signs need more space between the m than signs wheither of themselves or in their com bination with oth er signs show m uch light. Fo r examsuch setting as

though not bad, would be improved by more space in the full parts, thus:

Note that where a low sign stands alone, or else separates two other low signs at top bo ttom , it m ust stand exactly cen tral. So in ^ and ^= or ^7 in the above sentence.

The only common exception to the rule of ranging to top and bottom is in cases like where the lower straight surface of

Signs marked with an asterisk * are additions to the list included in my gram m ar, wh en thesadditions seemed to demand a position within, and not at the end of, the signs alreanum bere d. A few new signs, e .g. i E 3 5 , have been placed at the end of their respectivesections; in such cases the asterisk was naturally not required.

Signs marked with an obelus f are replacements of signs from earlier cut matrices whic

appeared to need im provem ent in one way or anothe r. T o render these im prove m eunmistakable to readers of my Egyptian Gramm ar a list of the rejected signs is appended atthe end of the Catalo gue . A uth or s sh ou ld, for exa m ple, not accept D 4 -=>- as a ren deof the eye, but should demand D 4f ^- with a smaller and rounder pupil .

In conclusion, le t i t be emphasized that M r. and M rs. D avies who drew the s igns, Mr. Biwho cut them, and the present writer who edits the fount, are all conscious that results vfar short of perfection have been obtained, and they would welcome any new fount whwould really carry the knowledge of Egyptian palaeography and the printing of hieroglyptexts yet farthe r forw ard. But until such a fount be organized, they wo uld be grateful any hin ts or sugg estions wh ich their colleagues m igh t be dispo sed to offer to th em . It is intention to make the present fount a progressive thing, responsive to new needs or to fresh recogn ition of palaeograph ic facts hithe rto overlooked or igno red. Read ers are requesto direct criticisms or materials for new signs to the undersigned at 9 Lansdowne RoL o n d o n , W. 11.
