Come sail awayOkanagan Lake is perfect for all sorts of fun on the water, from a day on the beach to swimming, sailing and waterskiing.

Summerland has plenty of fine beaches for those who want to enjoy some time at the water.

Sun-Oka Beach Provincial Park, at the south end of the community, is one of the most popular beaches in the Oka-nagan Valley.

The park is spa-cious and has plenty of picnic tables, ample parking and shaded areas. A separate area is set aside for boat-ers.

Powell Beach, in the northeast cor-ner of Trout Creek, is a municipal beach which also has a ten-nis court and a recrea-tion area.

The beach faces north and when the wind is from the south, it provides a sheltered area to enjoy the sun.

Kin Park, on Lake-shore Drive, has a playground area for children.

Gordon Beggs Rotary Beach, also on Lakeshore Drive, has change rooms and the restored Kiwan-is Pier. The beach is close to the Summer-land Yacht Club and the Trout Hatchery.

Peach Orchard Beach, on Lake-shore Drive at Peach Orchard Road, has a playground area for children, a volleyball area, a shelter and a water park. For boat-ers, there is a public boat launch.

For dog owners, there is a nearby dog beach area.

Crescent Beach, at the north end of Lake-shore Drive, faces east towards Naramata. There is no parking at this site.

Train provides heritage experienceA ride on the Kettle

Valley Steam Railway is also a trip into the past.

The Kettle Valley Railway was original-ly designed to bypass Summerland.

In 1910, James Ritchie, the reeve of the municipality, requested the rail-

way not to bypass the community. This request was turned down.

Ritchie then sur-veyed the area, using a carpenter’s level, and designed a route that would pass near the present research station.

This plan kept the

grade to no more than two per cent and shortened the route by nearly a kilometre.

A steel bridge over the Trout Creek Can-yon was built in 1913 and the first train crossed it on Oct. 25, 1913.

The first train

passed through Sum-merland May 31, 1915 at 3:59 p.m.. It consisted of a steam engine and its bag-gage car, a first class coach and a sleeper.

The last passenger train to pass through Summerland came through the commun-ity Jan. 16, 1964.

Although train service had come to an end, the tracks remained in place.

In 1989, the Ket-tle Valley Railway Heritage Society was formed. The soci-ety acquired the 16 kilometres of track between Trout Creek and Faulder.

While CP refused to sell or lease to the railway society, in 1994, the province announced it would seek to purchase the line.

The province announced the acqui-sition of the railway right-of-way on June 3, 1995. The railway

has been in operation since Sept. 17, 1995.

Today, it operates two trains a day, Thursday to Monday, during the summer season.

The locomotive is a restored engine from 1912 and the passen-ger cars date from the 1950s.

Riding the railsThe railway era is kept alive with the Kettle Valley Steam Railway. In addition to the regular train rides, the Garnett Valley Gang also holds train robberies on some of the rides.

Wonderful winesIf you would like

to sample some excel-lent wines, Summer-

land has plenty to offer.

The wine industry

is growing with more than a dozen winer-ies offering award-

winning reds, whites and fruit wines for every taste.

The area is a good place for growing early and mid sea-son grape varieties. Today, much of the agricultural land in the community is in use as vineyards.

Wine tours and wine tasting events are an important part of a visit to Summer-land.

In addition, many of the wineries will have special events and live music in conjunction with the Okanagan Wine Fes-tival.

Many of the winer-ies also feature works by local artists and artisans and enter-tainment by some of the top performers in the area.

For a list of Sum-merland’s wineries, stop in at the Sum-merland Visitor Cen-tre on Highway 97.

For information on the Okanagan Wine Festival events, please visit thewinefestivals.com.

ArtworkThe Summerland Community Arts Council has the Summer Arts Program in place during the summer months. Numerous classes and workshops for children are offered. In addition, the Summerland Art Gallery on Main Street has works from area artists on display.

Judging winesTerry David Mulligan examines wines at a competition at the Summerland Fall Fair. More than a dozen Summerland wineries are producing award-winning wines of all sorts.
