I can follow Jesus anywhere, “ and then - ZOOOOOOM - you crash into the twists and turns of life, jerking left then right, up then down, and fifty, sixty years go by and - WHAM! - you're dead. I have used the roller coaster as my model for many years now, and I often say to people, “If I were to have a heart attack right at this moment, I hope I would have just enough air in my lungs and just enough strength in me to utter one last sentence as I fell to the floor: “What a ride!” Well, I certainly hope that I have many more years of life ahead of me - and a few more of full-time ministry - but as I look back over the past 35 years I can honestly say: “What a ride!” Update on Mt. Hermon Meeting On Tuesday, June 6th Synod Minister Linda Pederson met with representatives from both St. John’s and Mt. Hermon for a second dialogue about how we might more effectively work together as we move into God’s future! It was once again an insightful meeting as we identified some ideas of how we might support each other (e.g. intentionally praying for each other the second Sunday of each month), how we might share gifts with one another (e.g. sharing musical talent), how we might serve together (joining in the Segner Benefit coming up this month), and a number of other possibilities still in the dream phase. We will be meeting again on July 20th here at St. John’s at 7pm to continue the conversation. Kris Nelson, Peggy Bodell, Denny Abernathy and I participated in the first meeting. Peggy Bodell, Shirley Figge and I participated in the second. Hopefully others will be intrigued and interested in participating in July (if you are interested, please give me a call or send me and email). It’s good to get to know our “neighbors” to the south - and remember that we are partners in a common mission! Coffee and Conversation Due to vacation time, continuing education, and other conflicts - I will NOT be “hanging out” at McDonald’s on Thursday during July and August - but, I hope to do it again come fall. Synod Assembly We had a good Synod Assembly. My wife Diane and I served as voting members from St. John’s. It was fun to have the song I wrote for the Synod sung throughout the assembly! It was also fun to have other voices leading it! Here are some highlights: July 2017 Good News! The Good News! is also available at www.stjohns-annandale.org. Our Summer Worship Theme: “Singing from the Heart” This summer we are focusing each Sunday on one of the Psalms. The book of Psalms was the ancient “hymnal” of Israel - and within the Book of Psalms there are songs/ prayers that reflect almost every human emotion - from joy to sorrow, from fear to anger, from praise to lament. We hope that you will join us as we listen to the psalmist “sing from the heart” - and allow the psalmist’s words to connect with us and lead us in “singing from the heart” as well. 35th Ordination Anniversary The eleventh of this month will mark the 35th Anniversary of my Ordination. It’s hard to believe that 35 years have gone by since that day my dad and others laid their hands on my head and ordained me a minister of Word and Sacrament in the Lutheran Church. It has been an incredible ride - and I have been blessed in countless ways along the way! I have, and continue to learn much - about God, about God’s incredible grace and love, and about God’s dream for us and God’s world! I have had the opportunity to serve six wonderful congregations in five different communities, each with wonderful leaders and staff, each with unique gifts, but each with a common mission - to share the love of God in Christ with the world! I have had the blessing of being welcomed in to people’s lives during the highest joys and deepest sorrows. I have seen the best of the church, and yes, sometimes I’ve seen the worst of the church - but in all times, I’ve been reminded again and again that it is God’s Church - and that God does God’s best work through broken people like you and me; who sometimes get it wrong, but oftentimes, by grace alone, get it right! And through 33 of those 35 years I have been blessed to have Diane by my side - and I am so grateful for her support along the way (not to mention our kids)! This month also marks the beginning of my 11th year here at St. John’s - by far the longest tenure I have enjoyed in any of the congregations I have served. That also is hard to believe. I am so grateful for the partnership in ministry that we share together as we experience, live and share the love of Jesus Christ. In a book by the late Michael Yaconelli, entitled Dangerous Wonder, he writes the following about the Christian life - and I would say the same is true of ordained ministry - he writes; “I believe roller coasters are a more accurate model for the Christian Life. [Jesus chooses you}, and suddenly you are strapped in and you think, “I’m going to die!” Then you begin the long climb of growth…[Sunday school, confirmation, Bible camp, etc.] continued on pg. 2

President Robin Steinke of Luther Seminary reminded us that “leaders don’t come from our seminaries, they come from our congregations.

Visitors from our Companion Synod in South Africa drew our attention to the fact that 7 million people in the SW Diocese of the Lutheran Church in southern Africa are infected with HIV/AIDS. But the work that we are doing, in supporting and HIV/AIDS ministry coordinator IS making a difference.

Bishop Jon reminded us that our congregations exist - NOT just to exist, but to make disciple's of Jesus! Bishop Jon also reminded us of the vocation of ALL the baptized - and that each and every day is a “baptismal

mission trip.” We are about God’s mission wherever life takes us. While we live in a VUCA world (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) - we live towards the Gospel!

Trusting that God is doing God’s restorative work - both in our lives and in our world! The questions were posed to us: “Do black and brown lives matter more in South Africa than they do in SW

Minnesota? And do we imagine becoming more ethnic, racially and economically diverse as a church?

Lifted up were both our church wide renunciation of the Doctrine of Discovery. We were encouraged to watch: dofdmenno.org/movie or listen to “The Little War on the Prairie - and MPR podcast. Also, our ELCA’s current “Women and Justice” study - which can be found on the ELCA website - www.elca.org.

Our Bible study leaders, focusing on Paul’s letter to the Romans, reminded us that 1) We can’t do it! 2) God does it! and 3) So what are we going to do? We are called to share the good news!

But at the center of the assembly (and our lives) is the Lord’s promise: “I am with you always!”

Update on Diane’s Dad As many of you already know, my wife’s dad underwent heart surgery on May 8th down in Rochester - but they were not able to complete the procedure. Due to the artery twisting, they were unable to complete the “tavr.” He has been healing well, will be down in Rochester on June 28th for another check-up, and then hopefully they will redo the surgery sometime this coming month. We would covet and appreciate your prayers for Jim as he undergoes another surgery! In Christ, Pastor Dave

Invest in the Kingdom: Gathered in Christ… Scattered to Serve

Invest in the Kingdom: Gathered in Christ...Scattered to Serve. As of June 23, 2017, we have received pledges in our new 3 year capital campaign to make 29 mortgage payments. We are still short. Our 3 year goal has to be 36 payments of $9,587. SO if you are doing the math, we are $67,109.00 short of our goal. The other important factor to remember is that we do not always receive all that is pledged...members move, there may be changes in personal finances, or an unexpected situation arrives that prevents a member from completing their commitment. So we need all of our

members to prayerfully consider if you can help in some way to complete this

2018 ELCA Youth Gathering

So far, TEN youth have pre-registered for next summer’s ELCA Yourth Gathering to be held in Houston, Texas. Every three years, 30,000 high school youth and their adult leaders from across the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America gather for a week of faith formation known as the ELCA Youth Gathering. Through days spent in interactive learning, worship, Bible study, service and fellowship, young people grow in faith and are challenged and inspired to live their faith in their daily lives. The theme of the 2018

gathering is “This Changes Everything” based on Ephesians 2:8, “By grace you have been saved…”

ALL youth who will be a part of the graduating classes of 2018-2022, are eligible to attend - and there is still time to pre-register and join in what will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. To pre-register, we are asking you to pay 1/2 of the registration fee ($75) now - and the second half ($75) will be due the beginning of September. If you have any questions, or if for some reason you cannot pay the half of the registration fee, please contact Pastor Dave.

Does technology intrigue you?? Do you love to volunteer?? Are you available a couple Sunday morning’s a month?? ...Then come join our team!!

From Pastor Tom’s Desk...

Dear Friends,

As we gather for worship this summer, we will focus on the book of Psalms. Surely you will ask the same questions that I have asked: “How is it possible that the concerns I have today could be expressed so clearly so long ago?”

The flow of their thoughts is unencumbered as they lay bare hurts, injustices, and problems in life. As we read their Psalms, we often say, “That’s exactly how I feel!” or “I wonder if the psalmist went through some of the things I am going through today”

There is no human thought or emotion that is not expressed in the Psalms. Having experienced some of our hurts and some of our joys, the Psalms teach us how to pray and praise! As our prayers become more real and bold, we find that our hearts are invaded by the Lord Himself.

There is one thing that I want you to remember each Sunday as you come to worship. This stuff that you will ponder today, these words, they are the very same words that Jesus pondered. He quoted some of those words from the cross.

Another thing, legions of saints have gone through life on their pilgrimage to heaven buoyed by the words from the Psalms. They will give you courage and strength and give wing to your words of praise. I do look forward to our worship together.

July 11th - 11:30 Pot-luck

Most of all, we need you to come, buy some tacos, and invite your friends! They really ARE very good!!!! Thank you for your generous support!!

Fundraising for Mission Trips:

St. John’s Lutheran Church believes in the importance of Mission Trips for our youth. The following

list of fundraising guidelines have been established:

*All fundraising activities for Mission Trips need to be pre-approved by church council.

*All fundraisers must signify specifically what the funds will be used for.

*Youth participating in St. John’s Mission Trips are expected to participate, in some way, in all

related fundraising activities.

*All proceeds raised must be used for the authorized trip; any excess funds will be set aside for

future authorized mission trips.

*The establishment of “Separate Accounts” is not allowed.

Young Adult Mission Trip Scholarship Fund

The St. John’s Council authorizes that all unused funds that remain in the Designated Fund: Youth

Individual Accounts Balance 3.2.2445, after the 2017 Mission Trip, be placed in a new account

entitled: Young Adult Mission Trip Scholarship Fund. This fund would provide up to $500 in

scholarship money to any St. John’s Young Adult (18-25 years of age) who participates in a

Christian Mission Trip (Study abroad would not meet the criteria).

The Young Adult would make application.

Scholarship money would be awarded and given directly to the sponsoring organization or

school in the name of the young adult.

As part of the application, the young adult, after returning home from the Mission Trip,

would agree to share their experiences with the congregation either in person or using video. Young adults would be eligible for one scholarship per year

Staffing Update If you read the Council minutes you will see that the Council has decided to pursue the calling a second full-time pastor. You may wonder what led to that decision. Well a number of things came into play: Pastor Tom’s decision to be done no later than the end of the year; a lack of CYF Director applicants (we only received one); and the realization that it could be quite difficult for us to find another pastor in the area who would be willing to do what Pastor Tom has been doing the past four years on a part-time basis. (You will remember that Pastor Tom was initially called to serve as interim after Pastor Ali’s resignation. t was our intention, at that time, to call a second pastor. But Pastor Tom was a great fit, he captured our hearts, and since he was willing to stay – so we kept him; and then called Jenny to serve as our CYF Director.) But what really moved us to make this decision at this particular time was that we were informed by our synod staff that there is a young man who hopefully will be assigned to our synod (we will know for sure the first week in July) – who is currently finishing his internship/seminary education and will be available for call in August. According to the synod, it is their understanding that this young man wants to remain in the St. Cloud area because of his wife’s teaching job. He has a background in youth ministry (serving seven years as a Youth Director), and is a gifted guitarist and musician, and comes with high recommendations from someone we know and trust: Pastor Tom (who happened to serve an interim in the congregation where he was serving as Youth Director). While we don’t know if he is even interested in the position here at St.John’s – there is a good possibility that he is and he certainly would come with the gifts and abilities that we need. So, considering all of these pieces, the Church Council came to the unanimous conclusion that it would be best for our ministry here at St. John’s to again pursue the calling a second pastor – someone who would bring leadership to our CYF ministries, but would also provide the full range of pastoral ministries, as well. So, at present, the Council is updating our Ministry Profile – a document that provides important information about our congregation to possible candidates. If, in this case, the young man is assigned to our synod, and if he is interested in being considered here at St. John’s, the Council will then move quickly to form a Call Committee of six people to interview him. If you would be interested in being considered for such a call committee, please contact Pastor Dave. If, after interviewing the candidate, the Call Committee believes that he would be a good fit, and the Council concurs, the candidate’s name and information would be presented to the congregation at a special congregational meeting – and a vote would be taken on whether or not to extend a letter of call. The congregation would be noti-fied of such a meeting at least two weeks in advance as outlined in our Constitution. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Dave or a member of the Church Council. – Prepared by Pastor Dave ATTENTION!!!
