President’s Message

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – July 2017

I am writing this month’s message one day after the despicable shooting in Alexandria, Virginia. It was directed toward a group of Republican lawmakers and staff who were practicing for a charity baseball game against a team of Democratic lawmakers and staff. As I write, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) is undergoing a third surgery as a result of his gunshot wound. I join with all people of good-will in praying for a complete healing for Rep. Scalise and all who were injured in the attack.

Since the shooting, Democratic and Republican leaders have talked about the need to ratchet down the political rhetoric and reintroduce civility to debate and discourse. Some have observed that this could mark a turning point in our country, the rise of a desire to bridge the gap of division that has so profoundly affected our country over the past few decades. We know that polarization has stymied the function of our government and has led to anxiety, anger, and isolation among our population. Many of us have lost friends and become alienated from relatives due to our differing political views. But even as our legislative leaders started talking about restoring cooperation and consideration in the governmental process, angry works and accusations were flying on social media. For example, on Facebook I read posts by conservatives accusing liberals of rejoicing over the attack and liberals saying Republicans have only themselves to blame for the shooting.

Why is it that “the better nature of our angels” is so often overwhelmed by anger, accusation, and mistrust? Why does the phrase, “we all want what is best for our country” all too often ring hollow? It seems we are all too in love with our own view of the world to allow for the possibility that the views of others might have some validity.

Rabbi Laura Geller of Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills recently wrote:

Judaism teaches that you need to both stand by your principles and compromise at the same time. But before you even get there, you need to listen to the other point of view. The Talmud tells us that while the First Temple was destroyed because of idolatry, sexual immorality, and violence, the Second Temple was destroyed because of incivility, baseless hatred, and the inability to listen to each other. Compromise is a high value; the reason we affix a mezuzah at an angle is because of compromise. Rashi taught that the mezuzah should be placed vertically; his grandson Rabbeinu Tam thought it should be horizontal. That’s why our mezuzzot are tilted at an angle. A subliminal message from this compromise is that shalom bayit, peace in the home, requires that everyone in a home be willing to compromise.

I have chaired enough Temple board meetings to know that when people hold tightly to opposite opinions, it can result in argument, anger, and an increase in volume, but rarely in progress. At least in such a small forum, people can admit that both sides have the best interest of the Temple at heart and debate generally results in handshakes by the end of the meeting. It is much more difficult for countrymen to put down their shields and allow that those whose beliefs differ from theirs still have the good of the nation at heart.

Perhaps, in light of the violent attack on our political institutions, the Independence Day holiday will provide an opportunity to demonstrate that, even as our founders argued, debated, and compromised to form our country, today we too can argue, debate, and compromise. We can once again learn to reach out a hand of friendship as compatriots and acknowledge that we all have the desire for “a more perfect union.” -- IRA L. GOLDSTEIN, President

This uniqueness of being part of this community and not outside of it, brings two items in the Jewish Experience in Russia to mind. The first one is from only 7 years after the First Amendment became Law. HaRav Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the author of HaTanya and founder of the Lubavitch Hasidic dynasty, was imprisoned in the notorious – Trubetskoy Bastion, of the Peter-Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg, Russia for 52 days on charges that his teachings threatened the imperial authority of the Czar.

The second is found in a Siddur from 1903 printed in Zhitomir, Russia that has in its frontispiece a large paragraph in Russian which states, “There is nothing here against the Czar.”

Some of us might disagree with Chabad Hasidism and how it views women, no one would argue that

what it has done here in America for those in need and that Hasidism sees a good Jew not by how much

they know but by how open is their heart to our people and our neighbors, for example: HaRav Shneur

Zalman is quoted in his most famous work, The Tanya ( The Lesson) as saying, “[For] those who are far

from G-d’s Torah and His service . . . one must draw them close with strong cords of love—perhaps one

might succeed in bringing them closer to Torah and the service of G-d. And even if one fails, one has

still merited the rewards of the fulfillment of the mitzvah, ‘Love your fellow.”

What could Rav Zalman have said that would be so against the Czar as to spend 2 months in an evil prison? Further, what could a Siddur prayer book have said against the Czar, either? Evidentially, the crimes the Siddur and Rav Zalman committed was that they were part of the ‘other’ religion.

In America, after 1791, there was no ‘other’ religion according to the Constitution and, for that matter, no other speech, or press release. The only limitation for speech and press was the truth. The US Constitution does not appreciate “bearing false witness against your neighbor.”

It also seeks peace for its citizens and their guests. That is why, the same First Amendment speaks of “Peaceful” Assembly as being a right of the first order. We may speak freely, write freely and worship freely. If we believe in those pillars of Democracy and those in power also believe in them, we will always be able to assemble peacefully.

Alas, as I write this column, violence has once again taken the life of an American. However, this time it is home grown. An American citizen, has taken the law into his own hands and killed people. I don’t know where he worshipped or what newspapers he read or details of his political views. But I do know because he and others have abandoned one of the four pillars of that most perfect of “American Commandments” the First Amendment, it has become like a chair with only 3 legs, and has toppled, because men and women would not support this most weighty of convictions. Freedom grows more completely and fully when it is demonstrated peacefully.

Rabbi Mark Sobel’s column, continued

(Continued from Page 4)

We as a people have so benefitted from the First Amendment where our houses of worship have been watched over. (There are almost 4,000 Jewish houses of Worship in the United States), The Presses that sing of Judaism are still ringing out. (There are Jewish Newspapers from Los Angeles to Brooklyn, from Minneapolis to Ft. Lauderdale and at the height of Yiddishkeit there were 5 Yiddish dailies in New York alone.) Jews still go out to talk and hear themselves speak. (The number of Jewish organizations are uncountable. The Young Jewish Republicans, The Young Jewish Democrats and the Bund are just a few examples).

If we are to preserve these three aspects of our freedom we must celebrate on December 15th the 228

th

anniversary of Independence for all not just us. BUT, we must do it peacefully. We must assemble at our Houses of Worship, speak our minds and/or write our feelings and march in song together.

All this must be done without violence. It is important that we, who have been so enabled and, in turn, given so much to America must show the country that violence in not the answer but, as our opening prayer on that Friday night, as on all Friday nights, says, Havainu Shalom Aleichem ( We Bring You Peace).

Let the Rededication to America, our People and Peace begin with us!

B’ahava,

Rabbi Mark

EDUCATION MATTERS - RSPA President, DAVID GOLDSTEIN

I hope everyone is enjoying a relaxing and fun filled summer so far. Our Religious School is currently on Summer Vacation, but plans are already underway for the 2017/18 academic year with classes set to begin in September. Registration information will be sent to all returning students via email later this summer; if you know of anyone who is interested in joining as a new student, please let me or the Temple office know and we will make sure that they receive all of the information they need to register. Planning has also begun for our 2017/18 Adult Education Series, which will begin during the month of November. Thanks to David Zollman and Eileen Martin for their participation in selecting the topic for this year’s series which will center on the subject of what it means to be a Jew. If you have any thoughts about areas of this subject that you would like to see explored we would value your input-- please contact Rabbi Mark through the Temple Office. Finally, as of July 1st, there has been a bit of a change in my own status here at the Temple. After having been honored to serve as Temple Vice President this past year and as a member of the Board of Directors for the past several consecutive terms, I have decided to leave the Board due to professional and personal obligations. However, I will continue on as Chair of the Religious School Parents Association and have been asked by the Board to continue to help oversee other Educational programs at the Temple, including our Religious School, Adult Education and Preschool. I look forward to continuing to serve our Temple in this new capacity. Enjoy your summer! Happy Fourth of July!!!

TEMPLE BETH EMET SISTERHOOD

Greetings, Sisterhood members and any of you who are thinking of joining.

As the new President, I look forward to talking with you, hearing your ideas and having you join in the activities of the Sisterhood. Many thanks to Cathy Zitnick, who has done a wonderful job leading us the past two years.

My husband and I have been members of the Temple for the past 3-1/2 years. Thanks to Naomi Aronoff, whom I met shortly after we moved here from Boston, MA, who introduced us to Temple Beth Emet. What a welcoming place the Temple is! We have enjoyed the Rabbi's class. I have had the privilege of starting a Jewish book group and have learned from the books we've read and the insights of the members.

To me, Sisterhood is an integral part of the Temple, supporting the Temple's activities and undertaking projects that will benefit the Temple. The sense of community and friendship that Sisterhood provides is one of it's great gifts.

The installation of the Temple Board and the Sisterhood Board take place on Friday night, July 14th. Our first Sisterhood meeting will be Sunday, August 6 at 10:00 AM. Meetings will continue to be the first Sunday of the month. I hope that you can join us then.

Regards,

Fran Bourne Johnson President, Temple Beth Emet Sisterhood

Do You Have a Son and/or Daughter In College?

Temple Beth Emet has started a program to connect with our students

attending a College. We would like to help them to continue their Jewish way

of life and offer them additional support. This way, they will always have an

open line of communication with our Rabbi, should they have questions or

need direction; and we will remind them of their link to Israel and to keep

connected to the Jewish Community. After college, we hope to have them

join our Temple, as an adult.

Please send an e-mail and give me the following information:

The name of the Student;

Class Level;

Address;

Name of the University, and;

If the Student is a member of any organization or club on

campus.

The Temple will send a care-package for each holiday, as a gift to the

Student with a calendar of events at the Temple for each month. The

Student will be invited to all events sponsored by the Temple. We would like

to encourage the Student to return to the Temple as often as they wish; as

the Temple would like to offer itself as a second home and place of Jewish

learning. I look forward hearing from you!

Alexy's HIDDEN IDENTITIES TRILOGY, followed in 2003 by THE MARRANO LEGACY, and in 2005 by

IN SEARCH OF FORGIVENESS, recounting her own search for her lost Jewish heritage.

The Book Club will meet on the 4thTuesday of every month. The group will discuss what the next

book will be at the meeting, as well as the format of the discussion group.

You may contact Fran at [email protected] or call her at (617) 306-3835.

Fran Bourne-Johnson is enthusiastically inviting you to attend. She will warmly welcome the readers and

a lively discussion is expected. The book she is recommending is both exciting and interesting. What a

great way to socialize AND improve your mind! Let’s get together and share a great reading experience.
