A past student at St Peter and St School, Naomi went on to study A Levels in History, Philosophy and English Literature, securing a place at the University of Leicester. During this time, Naomi was unsure of her future career path but always had a strong interest in Politics and hoped that one day she could contribute to making society a fairer place for all. During her work experience year she became a Trade Union

Representative and featured prominently with the Usdaw Union. At this point Naomi decided that she wanted to spend her career helping and campaigning for workers and their rights. She continued higher education and gained a position as an Area Organiser at Unison East Midlands in the Police and Justice Sector. After Naomi completed her Trade Union and Legal training, she focused

on standing for election as a Labour candidate for the Minster Ward, where she was duly elected. She currently sits on the Planning Committee, the Ethics and Engagement Committee and the Community Leadership Scrutiny Committee. Naomi has tremendous support from her family, which includes six brothers and one sister and she has many supportive friends.

Disco inferno It was the summer of 1976, hottest summer ever recorded apparently. Did you hear they even started rationing the water? Jack (Joe Tweddle, Y10) had just got to his shift at the Disco Inferno nightclub after another failed audition, so Duke, the boss (Peter Latimer, Y13) decided that Jack should make up the hours he’s missed by cleaning tables after the bar closes. Little did Jack know he would be visited by the sultry right hand of the Devil, Lady Marmalade (Zuzanna Walaszczyk, Y10), who persuades Jack to sell his soul in return for fame and fortune. Jack gets everything he ever wanted – he knocks the egotistical frontman Heathcliffe (Jackson Gough Y9) out of the limelight and gets himself a record deal, interviews with Time, lunch with glamour girls, he could take all the money he ever earned and add four zeros! But, this deal came at a cost. As the fame begins to go to his head, he loses his high school sweetheart Jane, (Eve Madeley Y7) as well as his friends Maggie (Sophie Latimer Y7), and Terry (Isabel Eldridge, Alphie Ryan Y7) and finds himself alone and miserable. The one person he could confide in and his closest friend, Tom (Jack O’Boyle) attempts to turn Jack to the way he once was, but greed and jealousy gets the best of him, resulting in devastating consequences for everyone.

This year, the drama club has been busy preparing for the whole school production of ‘Disco Inferno’, the devilish 70’s musical! Students from across the school have taken part in the show – from selling raffle tickets, to singing in assemblies, to painting the set as well as rehearsing every week to create two fantastic performances on the 1st and 2nd of July, full of funk, that were definitely ‘nights to remember’! The soundtrack of the evening was provided by our very own school band ‘Flared Nostril’ (Mr Clark, Mr Challenger, Mr Harvey, Saif Mustafa Y13, Mrs Shinn, Miss Bell, Orinayooluwa Ojo Y12) who ‘played that funky music’ so we could do the twist, the boogaloo, even the mashed potato to a sold out audience of our friends and family. With hit songs like ‘Crocodile Rock, I Will Survive, Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting, as well as a guest performance by ABBA, it definitely was a night for a boogie, full of laughs, tears and pride for everyone involved! The overall experience from directing this show has been unbelievable from start to finish. In any school show, there will always be trials and challenges that we must overcome, and each and every student involved has managed that. The exceptional acting abilities of students and the drive and determination shown by our senior members have been second to none and each student has been a pleasure to work with. We have watched students develop in their performing abilities, but also in their self-confidence and how well they support and encourage one another has been the best I have ever seen. Myself and Mr Clark would like to thank all students involved, including our backstage crew (Chloe Lambert Y10, Jordan Brooks Y12) as well as the staff who have given up their time to help us put on this successful production. We hope you managed to get your ticket and could ‘celebrate good times!’, but don’t worry – we won’t ‘leave you now’, the Drama Club will be back in full swing from September, ready for our next challenge!

Wimbledon 2016 During Conscience Week students and staff set off to Wimbledon to experience some ‘chalk dust’ - as John Mcenroe would say!

On ‘Manic Monday’ they saw Angelique Kerber (Australian Open Champion 2016: World Number 4) followed by David Goffin (World Number 12) v Milos Raonic (World Number 6).

Everyone really enjoyed being on ‘Henman Hill’ and there was only one ten minute rain delay!

Academy Trips

Battlefields 2016 We went prior to the 100th anniversary of the Somme which made the whole trip more powerful as we visited many of the sites of the battle of the Somme. As part of the visit we went through many trenches, which helped us get a better idea of what it was like in the times of war. Walking through the trenches made us picture ourselves in the same position of the soldiers in 1916. We gained more respect and an understanding of the soldiers and the awful conditions they endured during World War 1. We visited many British war cemeteries throughout our trip; however the German cemetery at Langemark had the biggest impact on us. Unlike all the others, Langemark was about the comradeship in war rather than remembering the lives lost. The Germans specifically planted oak trees over the cemetery so the light was blocked out. There were no flowers and all the grave markers were a dark grey, full of names of all those who lost their lives to the devastating war. As soon as you walk in, the atmosphere is different. There was no colour and it was a truly moving experience that will stay with us forever. It made us think that although they were on the other side, their lives still had value and they still died for their country’s future. Chloe Lambert and Keelan O’Reilly

University of Lincoln A number of our Year 10 students recently had the opportunity to

visit Lincoln University. They met with university students who talked

to them about their time there and also how their transition to

university went. The students got involved in various activities

including a tour of the campus where they saw all the facilities

including the student accommodation. They also took part in a

performance poetry session with ‘Dreadlock Alien’ during which they

wrote poems about their own ambitions. This visit was thoroughly

enjoyed by all who attended and gave our students an excellent

insight into university life.

Conscience Week 2016

Our annual Conscience Week was another great success where students in Years 7, 8 and 9 took place in many varied activities. For Year 9 students this included a Recycled Fashion Show where they designed, made and displayed clothes made from recycled materials. Also they spent a day following the ‘It’s That Easy’ programme which included topics on Alcohol Awareness, E safety, Road Safety, Arson/Hoax Calls and Crime/ASB as part of the Stay Safe Partnership programme. Year 8 students had the opportunity to visit the Civil War Centre in Newark or the Showroom in Lincoln; this was then followed by a STEM activity where the students had to work in teams designing, building and flying an aircraft on a zip line to deliver eggs into a target without breaking them. Well done to FOXTROT group who scored the most accurate plane. They were also visited by the Lincoln Owl Trust and were given the opportunity to handle a variety of owls. Students were informed that the primary aim of caring for injured animals is to return them to the wild. Many Year 7 students took part in the London Theatre trip and for those who remained in school were given the opportunity to take part in the Lincoln Cultural Visit to the Castle, Cathedral and the Collection. There were also many other activities that took place in school for all 3 year groups to enhance the students learning and encourage them to work together in teams and develop skills in communication and cooperation. During this time we had many visitors to the school who worked with our students to make this annual event a success and all of the visitors were extremely complimentary about how all the students in our academy were polite, well behaved and cooperative in all of the activities.

As part of Conscience Week, a group of year 7s and 8s went to London with the English department. In the evenings, we went to two theatre productions: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda. In the daytime, we went to The Making of Harry Potter, Shrek Adventure World and the London Eye. We stayed in a luxury hotel in London, with breakfast in the hotel and loads of different types of food to pick from. We set off early on Monday morning on the coach. The highlight of the coach journey was when we had a problem with the air conditioning, as it was dripping onto the driver, a television and some of the students. We were happy to get to London, and quickly checked into the hotel. We had around an hour to unpack and get used to our rooms until we had to go down to the reception, before we got back on the coach to go to a restaurant, the Hard Rock Café. We all gathered on tables - and most of us had a cheeseburger. After the café, we went to a theatre to watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The staging was fantastic and really brought the characters to life. In the morning, we got changed and went downstairs for breakfast.

After breakfast, we had some downtime in our rooms before we got on the coach and headed to Central London. We got to go on the London Eye, where everyone took thousands of pictures of the view.

We could see Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. When we got off the London Eye we went straight to Shrek Adventure World and it was really cool! There were people dressed as the characters from Shrek and there were plenty of tasks to do there. After, we all got a picture with Shrek and left with our groups after the massive struggle to get to an elevator! When we met up with everyone, we were allowed to go around without teachers in groups of 3. We all met up again and went back on the coach to another café, the Rainforest Café. There were special effects: thunder noises and lights to replicate lightning and a fake gorilla that kept making gorilla noises! When we finished eating, we went back onto the coach and went to another theatre to watch Matilda. Out of both performances, I would say that I liked Matilda the best because it was more entertaining and was like the film, which I love! After Matilda, we got on to the coach again and back to the hotel. The next day was interesting as well. After breakfast, we went by

coach to the Making of Harry Potter. In there was all the props from the actual film! After looking around and getting pictures, we got on the coach again to go home. It was a long ride again, but well worth it.

Overall, it was an amazing trip and my favourite part was going on the London Eye to see all the great views.

Sports Day 2016

www.sspp.lincs.sch.uk

Congratulations to Francis House who won the cup this year!

Sporting Successes We are delighted to share with you that we have several students with us who play their chosen sport at County level: Katherine Mulligan - Netball George Wood - Badminton Albert Wood - Badminton Dylan Ramm - Cricket Congratulations to them all for reaching such a high standard.

Academy Trust Primary Sports Day For the fourth year in a row our family of Catholic Primary Schools gathered at St Peter and St Paul for a day of competitive sport. 150 children arrived at 10am for a short sport-focused liturgy from Mr Brogan and his Chaplaincy Team, and were then divided into 5 teams named after famous tennis players (a nod towards our recent Wimbledon visit!). The teams then competed ferociously against one another in cricket, rounders, mat-ball and football to accumulate as many points as possible. As in previous years Mr Henderson had created a giant digital scoreboard where pupils could track the progress of their team. As the day came to a climax the screen was blacked out to hide the final result, but when it was revealed, Team Raonic had triumphed much to the delight of its delirious members! A huge thank you to all involved, especially our team of SSPP Sports Leaders who helped the day run so smoothly.

After the rain delay of 29th June we had a lovely day for sports day with a really excellent spirit from all three houses with particular mention to Mr Clark’s drums to keep the noise levels nice and high. The event was enhanced with the stalls run by the Year 8 and Mr Challenger’s BBQ and the competition standard was high with 3 school records broken: Alex Atkinson 800m Joshua Chandler 80m Paige Crampton 80m Results At the end there were wins for : Y7 – francis Y8 – Francis Y9 – Bernadette Y10 – Francis Overall victory for Francis!

Air Ambulance Money raised far is a whopping..... £1622.58

Young Carers

In April we had 3 visits from Clive Yates from the Lincolnshire Carers and Carers Trust. Clive presented assemblies to Francis, Hugh and Bernadette Houses to bring awareness to staff and pupils about the day to day lives of how a Young Carer may live and what they may go through. The message that came across was that circumstances change so you may not be caring for anyone at the moment but due to an accident, mental illness, injury etc. you could be caring for someone in your family. If this does happen please do not feel that you have to cope on your own as here at SSPP we will make every effort to help you with your school work, homework and someone to talk to. Mrs Rodak, based in the Newman Centre is the Key Worker for Young Carers and available should you need any help or advice.

The Student Council has been fund raising throughout the year with our May non-uniform day (an additional one) raising over £500 for ‘Sophie’s Journey’, a charity cause that the students have chosen to support. This is alongside our main charity this year the Air Ambulance. Many thanks to all parents for continuing to support us. We look forward to the new academic year when a new set of representative students join us and new roles and responsibilities established within the council. This will be moving from a string of successes this year again not least achieving Gold Award for Student Council work.

Over the past year the Academy has reached out into the three parishes. It was decided that each of the three houses; Bernadette, Francis and Hugh would lead a Sunday Mass in one of the Parishes. First up was Bernadette who led mass in St Hugh’s Church on the Feast of Christ the King (Youth Sunday). On Sunday 1st May Hugh house led the 11am Mass in St Peter & St Paul’s Church supported by both Pupils and staff, it was good to be able to promote the Academy. On Monday 2nd of May at 7pm pupils and staff attended the 50th anniversary of St Peter and St Paul Catholic Church. It was a wonderful occasion to be in the presence of most of the past parish and assistant priests. Our final Mass of the year was led by Francis house in Our Lady of Lincoln Church on Saturday 25th June at 6.30pm. It was a wonderful experience to be able to celebrate Mass with the different Catholic communities around Lincoln. It is hoped the involvement with the three parishes can be built upon over the coming years.

Important Academy Information

Every Day Matters Important Information to Pupil Attendance

Change to persistent absentee threshold In an endeavour to improve overall pupil attendance, the Government has implemented a change in the persistent absentee threshold from 85% to 90%. This means that any pupil with an attendance of 90% or less will be classed as a ‘persistent absentee’. This is irrespective of the reasons given for the absences and it does not matter whether the absences have been authorised by the Academy or not. The fact that they have missed 10% of their education is what is important. We do not routinely authorise absences when a student’s attendance is below 90%. We as an Academy, will take swift action. These actions may include meetings in school, home visits by our Educational Welfare Officer or the issuing of Fixed Penalty Warning Notices or legal proceedings against the parents or carers of pupils who are persistently absent.

Medical evidence If your child is unwell and is absent from school for three consecutive days or more, we request that you provide medical evidence in support of the absence. Should your child’s school attendance become a concern, you will be asked to provide medical notes/evidence for all absences. Absences for which we do not receive medical evidence will not be authorised.

Medical appointments In order to minimise absences from school due to medical appointments from September 2016, we ask that all medical appointments are made outside of school hours unless vital or due to an emergency. I would like to thank you in anticipation of your co-operation in helping your child maintain a high level of school attendance in order to meet the exceptionally stringent parameters set by the Government.

Following the decision of the High Court in the Isle of Wight case, regarding fixed penalty notices (FPNs), the Government has stated that they are intending to review the judgment and are likely to amend the legislation to address this apparent loophole. However, in the interim, the Local Authority have issued the following interim guidance:

- A family holiday still has to meet the challenge of being an exceptional circumstance, if it does not, it should be unauthorised

And finally,

Welcome to the second newsletter from the Governing Body.

It is hard to believe that we have reached the end of a another academic year, but here we are having said goodbye to our current year 11 and 13 who are now anxiously awaiting their results! We would like to wish them every success with the next step of their journey and offer a warm welcome to the students that will be returning to continue their education with us.

Once again our students continue to be active within the academy life, contributing to student council meetings where all the important decisions are made. The students have been busy fundraising, which this year is in excess of £4,500 and not forgetting the wonderful performance ‘Disco Inferno’ enjoyed by all who experienced this feast of musical theatre.

My role within the Governing Body is that of Foundation Governor. This is a new role for me having been a Parent Governor for the past three years, it consists of sitting on the Curriculum and Standards Committee, this covers standards and other matters relating to the Academy curriculum and policies whilst ensuring that SSPP promotes the highest standard of education for your child to reach their potential. I also sit on the Spirituality Committee which looks at and evaluates all aspects of Catholic life within the academy to see how it can be improved and to ensure that all denominations are welcomed. I am Link Governor to the RE, ADT, Performing Arts, P.E. and Vocational Education departments and meet with the respective subject leaders regularly to support and gain an improved understanding of what the school does well and what, from the staff members’ perspective, needs further work or resources. The information I gain from these meetings is then fed back to the Full Governing Body meetings every term. It is a fulfilling role and I enjoy the mutual trust and understanding that has been gained from my time as a Governor within the academy.

I also attend the 'Parent Forum’ meetings as a governor and as a parent which are held once a term along with Mr Keogh and Mr Wilkinson. This is an excellent opportunity for parents to come along and have an informal discussion with the academy leaders about where the academy is going, to catch up on news and to find out what changes may be ahead, for instance at some of our recent discussions we talked about: the efficiency of school buses, the new parent pay scheme and also how school trips are run. It provides a great platform to be involved in school life and make positive contributions to the changes that are being made within the academy, whilst this is yet another commitment for parents in an already hectic family schedule if you would like to come along you we would love to see you.

As a governing body we have seen a few changes over the last year with governors terms coming to a natural end and others leaving for personal reasons. We will be welcoming some new governors in September and look forward to their contribution, inspiration and support that they will be offering to the academy. A full list of all the governors can be found on the academy website. We have survived a challenging year and we have seen many positive changes in the academy framework but these are exciting times and we are set to face another challenging year ahead, setting suitable aims and objectives, also agreeing that policies, targets and priorities are being achieved.

At SSPP we are fortunate to have a leadership team, teaching and support staff that create a safe and wonderful learning environment promoting individuality and growth for each student to reach their full potential. We would also like to thank

Fr John Kyne for participating in all aspects of the ecumenical year who manages to not only sit on the governing body but also say Holy Mass and attend feast day celebrations. A very special thank you must go out to Deacon Peter Brogan who is stepping down as our chaplain, he has been instrumental with the spiritual life of the academy and is respected by students and staff alike. He will be missed in this role although Deacon Peter will still be around to offer support and spiritual guidance to all that may need it! On behalf of the Governing Body we would like to thank all the staff for their continued commitment to the academy, all the students for their commitment to study and how they represent the academy in such a fabulous way, all the parents who offer support helping to make the academy a success, last but not least we would like to thank our chair Mr Mike Holmes whose commitment and leadership have guided us through this challenging year. We wish you all a happy and restful summer break.
